Five stars. No notes. Somebody alert the Mouse.
We have stayed at Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort THREE times.
Three.
And somehow, through what I can only describe as a catastrophic failure of our family's culinary intelligence apparatus, we had never eaten at Sebastian's Bistro.
WHAT IN THE NAME OF WALT DISNEY'S CRYOGENICALLY PRESERVED MUSTACHE WERE WE THINKING?!
Because, dear reader, this place is fantastic.
Let me set the scene.
After a long day of traveling, four exhausted humans wandered into Sebastian's Bistro at approximately 8:40 PM.
Now, there was a time when 8:40 PM was practically lunchtime for me. Back in the ancient civilization known as 2007, when my wife and I first met, we would routinely order pizza at 1:00 AM like two feral raccoons who had discovered love, carbohydrates, and the intoxicating freedom of adulthood.
Apparently, somewhere between then and now, I became a man who looks at an 8:40 dinner reservation and thinks, "Good heavens. Will we survive?"
Time is a cruel and deeply unserious wizard.
ANYWAY.
THE FOOD. THE GLORIOUS FOOD.
First, I am lactose intolerant.
Not in the cute, trendy, "Oh, dairy makes me a little uncomfortable" way.
No. My digestive system regards lactose as an invading army and responds with the kind of overwhelming military force normally reserved for the final act of a Michael Bay film.
Eating at restaurants can therefore be an adventure in gastrointestinal Russian roulette.
But Sebastian's Bistro?
THESE MAGNIFICENT BEAUTIFUL HUMANS.
They were extraordinarily accommodating, genuinely pleasant, and wonderfully attentive to my dietary needs. Not only did they make me feel welcome, but I was able to enjoy the entire meal.
THE ENTIRE MEAL.
Do you understand how rare that is?!
I felt like a medieval peasant who had just discovered that the king was allowing him to eat at the royal banquet instead of standing outside chewing on a turnip.
And my wife, who cannot eat gluten, had an equally wonderful experience.
Two people with dietary restrictions. One restaurant. Everyone eating happily.
Somewhere, a choir of Caribbean angels began singing.
Our daughters, ages 11 and 13, loved it too. And anyone who has traveled with children understands that getting four people with different tastes, dietary needs, and levels of travel-induced existential exhaustion to enthusiastically agree on dinner is roughly equivalent to negotiating a lasting peace treaty between rival intergalactic civilizations.
THE FAMILY-STYLE DINING IS BRILLIANT.
There is something wonderful about sitting around a table, sharing a meal, passing food, laughing, and simply being together.
No frantic menu negotiations. No elaborate culinary diplomacy. Just a genuinely delicious meal enjoyed with people you love.
It reminded me of something I adore about Disney's Onward.
Which, incidentally, is one of my favorite Disney movies.
GO WATCH IT.
Seriously.
I'll wait.
That movie understands something profoundly important about family, adventure, love, and the strange magic hiding inside ordinary moments.
And somehow, after an exhausting travel day, Sebastian's Bistro managed to capture a little of that same magic.
We arrived tired, hungry, and operating on the last surviving neurons of our collective travel brains.
We left happy, full, laughing, and genuinely excited to be at Disney.
That's not just good food.
That's hospitality doing what hospitality is supposed to do.
And sometimes the real Disney magic isn't a castle, a fireworks show, or a suspiciously cheerful mouse wearing pants but no shirt.
Sometimes it's a wonderful restaurant where the staff treats your family with kindness, everyone can safely enjoy a delicious meal, and you remember that the best part of an adventure is sharing it with the people you love.
Sebastian's Bistro, you magnificent Caribbean culinary sorcerers, you have earned our loyalty.
FIVE STARS.
Don't sleep on this restaurant.
Although, if you're over 40 and eating at 8:40 PM, apparently sleeping immediately afterward is a very real possibility.
Party hard. Eat well. Stay weird. And for the love of all things magical, GO TO SEBASTIAN'S BISTRO.
