This place is for yuppies who want to be seen outside of the cool bakery downtown. The slightly better quality baked goods are not worth the inconvenience that the staff will put you through. We love to come here after our Farmer's Market excursions. It is usually busy at that time (grab a table first if you can), but it is worth it. The croissant egg sandwiches are heavenly (available natch in Boulder with daily Veggie and Meat options), and the quiche is good too. The pastries and coffee are yummy, too! This place gets 4 stars because Boulder needs more bakeries/pastry shops. The fact that Spruce Confections is one of few, they get an extra star. In reality, I think this place is okay. I got their chocolate cake with raspberry cream which was really good. The cream is especially good. The cake was ok. I wish it was more moist and more flavorful. Although I love the cream I prefer the cake at Tee & Cakes. I have to go back and try the scones and other stuff that everyone seems to dig here. I have enjoyed Spruce Confection for several months since moving from the Bay Area but my last few visits have been disappointing, especially today. We were not treated kindly by the more recent cashier, a tall chap, he was quite rude & marginally helpful. A great deal of noise in the kitchen area which demanded we move outside. Chicken in the Cesar salad was tough lettuce brown/old in appearance & taste! Last few visits banana bread has been stale. I regret reporting this but it has happened too often. It appears management needs to monitor their employees & prepared product carefully - it would be a shame for this reliable, 'go to', cafe fail! read more

Small neighborhood bakery on the west end of Pearl. Ordering can be tricky if there is a long line and go early to avoid things selling out quickly. The pre-made sandwiches are really dry, heads up, and never have enough sandwich meat or veggies in proportion to the bread. I do enjoy the yummy cookies and pastries and like to purchase one to eat as I walk up Pearl to do shopping. Outdoor seating is lovely on a warm day. read more

For me, Spruce is worth the (1,600 mile) trip! I first visited this litle gem several years ago at the recommendation of friends who go to Boulder frequently. They had gushed over--and shared day-old "imports" from--it for years so I finally decided to go while on business in Denver. I am so glad I did because I was able to experience the wonderfulness first-hand. They have the most divine selection of FRESH pastries, sandwiches, and salads. The "Old B" cookie is AMAZING and the other options are just as yummy. The staff is super friendly and welcoming, including the owner who I met on my first visit when he came in with fresh ingredients as I was placing my order. There is quaint outdoor seating and the shop is nestled on a lovely shopping district. There is a nice community vibe at Spruce, undoubtedly attributable to the responsive, warm staff and owner. I have referred everyone I know traveling within 100 miles of Boulder to Spruce. None have been disappointed. If there was a way for me to make the 1,600 trip daily to get an Old B cookie, I would. read more

Beautiful outdoor seating and one of the best hangout spots in Boulder when the weather is good. Even when it is a bit cold the outdoor tables are used which says a lot of good things about Boulderites. Food is tasty - great soups, croissants, sandwiches. Stopped here in the morning rush with my girlfriend as we got into town. I love the interior of this place. It has a homey quaint feel to it. They have one of the widest and most delicious selections of bakery items I have ever seen offered in a coffee shop. And I don't throw that around lightly because I am a barista for a living! My girlfriend got a raspberry scone and i got a cheese danish. Both were righteous! I'm a big fan of cold press coffee so I ordered a cold press with some vanilla. The barista ordering my drink told me that they have a creamy cold press that is steeped with vanilla, I believe it was called the Spruce Cold Press?, whatever it was called, they could've called it Iced Heaven Coffee because that's what it tasted like! I think because they steep it with vanilla it tasted even better then my stores cold press! My girlfriend got a chai tea latte (if you know her, this is no surprise, if chai obsessed was a thing it would accurately describe her). We enjoyed our drinks and pastries on the patio out front in between the neighboring store. It was a beautiful day to enjoy our lovely drinks and pastries together. read more

I have been a regular here for almost 7 years. I love having this in my neighborhood so I can walk my dog down to get coffee and baked goods. Their outside patio boasts a lot of seating for a bakery/coffee shop, which is so nice. I also have to say that their soups are pretty legit (as are their croissants)! I have tried almost all of their soups, and the amazing thing is that each day they have usually 3-4 of them and they rotate soups daily so you never know what you're going to get, but they are all delicious. I love the Berbere Lentil, the Mekong Duck, and the Chicken cabbage one (it goes by different names). YUM!! In the winter, I usually go there almost every day for soup. Healthy, huh? I even crave their soups all throughout the summer, and am that crazy person there when it's 95 degrees out, getting a bowl of soup for lunch. A definite must try! We're starting to become aficionados for great pasties in down home parts of the planet. Stopped in for a lovely cap and morning pastry a few weeks ago on a cold rainy morning and it hit the spot. Pastries were fluffy and tasty - would have preferred they served them a bit warm but they were delicious and buttery without a lot of heavy feeling. The place is kind of inviting but could be homier inside. Lots of dirty dishes at the end of the counter where people self serve to clean up but it was too near a table to be inviting. Not too many places to sit and they make it clear they don't want you to park yourself there for a morning or a couple of hours with a laptop and some coffee. We enjoyed it; we have had better. I love Spruce Confections. The pastries are made daily, in house - you can watch the bakers work as you wait for you treats. Their savory foods (soups, salads, quiche) are just as good. I can't go to a chain cafe or bakery knowing that Spruce is in town. After reading reviews here and on Urban Spoon, I stopped by Spruce Confections to pick up a birthday cake. The bakery looked nice, and the cake tasted great. It wasn't a huge selection, but I didn't call ahead or try and special order anything, and was completely satisfied with the cake we chose. The service here was absolutely TERRIBLE. Went to get coffee with my boyfriend yesterday afternoon and the man working was extremely rude. I had to tell him 3 times to not give me whipped cream. I ordered the Florentine and he asked if it was Coffee and milk... like um why are you asking me? FYI a Florentine is half coffee/half hot chocolate. If you are going to be the only person working at the front of the house, have a good attitude and know your drinks!! Will never go back here again. read more

My sister has an anaphylactic allergy to walnuts, pecans, cashews, and other tree nuts. But not to peanuts and almonds. I purchased baked goods after double and triple checking with the counter server that there were in fact no walnuts or pecans, etc. She assured me that there weren't any nuts (only peanuts and almonds). Besides the fact that there are no ingredients listed on these items, there are also no allergen warnings whatsoever in the restaurant - nothing about contamination, nothing. My sister had an immediate and severe reaction which means there were actual walnuts/pecans in these baked goods. Luckily she quickly took four benadryl otherwise we'd be at the hospital. This is extremely irresponsible and dangerous. If they can take the time to mark items as containing gluten, they can/should/MUST do the same with nuts and other allergens. This is 2018. This is Boulder. When I called to let them know of their error, they were at most indifferent. Allergies are not to be taken lightly. This place has officially lost my business. read more

Spruce Confections is the best little "corner of the world" in Boulder! The food is great--the Old B cookies are addictive, as are the scones. The atmosphere is so healthy. Friendly staff, wonderful sunny outdoor seating. It is a great place to bring the family, and the dogs love to sit outside too. You can get a doggie biscuit for them. This place was terrible. Not only was it $9 for three small pastries, all three women at the counter were more interested in reviving an inside joke with their friend (who happened to be at the back of the line) then acknowledging the money in my hand. Terrible service. Once we got out the door we found the outside tables littered with dried bird shit. Nasty! I understand that it's a shared area with a couple other stores, and that you can't clean them up multiple times a day, but this was old and it was apparent that no one cares about the customer experience or takes any pride in the business. To top it off, my son needed to use the restroom, but apparently the key was misplaced and they didn't have any extras. The woman at the counter told me the neighboring stores had keys as well. I guess she failed to notice that none of them were open at 9am on Saturday morning. She must have stopped by the dispensary on her way to work. Would not go back again. Maybe the people of Boulder don't know any better, but THIS IS NOT A GOOD PASTRY SHOP!! read more
