We wanted to like this place. Nice ambience and great waitstaff. Reasonable prices. Weird menu. Prides itself in frying all things in beef tallow. I don't eat beef, so I had my eye on the chicken and fish dishes, but they were all fried in the beef tallow. No offer to pan fry something for me instead. (Beef tallow is 50% saturated fat, which can raise "bad" LDL cholesterol and increase the risk of heart disease). My dining partner had steak and eggs, which came with dry cubed potatoes (but no toast). Just two eggs on a plate with a piece of steak and some cubed tallow-fried potatoes- no sauce of any kind, not a garnish on the plate. It was a very dry meal, the yolks providing the only moisture. I had shrimp and grits. It seems like they tried to sauté some onions in the pan before adding the shrimp, but the onions were neither fully carmalized nor raw, they were just that weird in between bitter flavor that causes burps. The sauce had a lot of grease in it, which floated on top of the grits, the texture was just mushy goop. Again no garnish or side offering. Everything was absolutely mediocre and disappointing. (There were items on the menu I would have enjoyed more, but they all involved beef tallow. I understand that they only have one fryer, which might be something they want to rethink in the future, or they could offer a quick pan fry for the fish or chicken). read more

I was curious about trying this place after craving some lamb chops. I ordered the French onion, soup and lamb chops, which were both very good.. there was no tables available so I sat at the bar. Service was good. Food came out quickly. I typically pay with cash, but this restaurant does not accept cash. Which was the surprise to me, but thankfully, I had my card on me. We started off with a party of 8 when making reservation. We then had 2 others to add, so called to increase. We all knew they may not be able to seat us a 1 long table, but to our amazement Sebastian took care of our needs. Food was amazing and drinks to die for. We went to spruce + ash for their soft opening this evening and we will definitely be back. The restaurant is small but the seating wasn't packed in and was very comfortable. We had a few cocktails before our meal and enjoyed the limoncello spritz and especially the El Sol. The El Sol tastes just like sunshine in a glass, I don't know how else to describe it. It is amazing! We got truffle fries with their homemade ranch which was delicious. The truffle flavor wasn't cloying or overdone. For entrees, we did the short rib and the fried chicken. The fried chicken was perfectly cooked and crisp and came with very delicious coleslaw and a small side of Mac and cheese. My only wish was for more Mac and cheese! The braised short rib was the real showstopper. It was a sizeable portion and the meat was tender, with properly rendered fat running through it. It melted in my mouth; the flavor was wonderful. The heirloom carrots were nicely cooked and the mash was flavorful and delicate. The gravy was a spot on addition to the dish. Honestly, we can't wait to go back and try the brunch. A great spot for a date night, or some appetizers and drinks at the bar. A good addition to the downtown area that fills a void. read more

First time visit. Interior is cozy, well spaced layout. Outdoor seating was packed on Friday night. Wine list is brief. Cannot take unfinished bottle home with you, FYI. Food was better than average-fried chicken was very tasty, moist and crisp. Fries are shoestring my fave. Caesar salad was good, croutons were VG, heavy on the anchovies, dressing could use more garlic. But good sized. Had the queso dip, it was just okay. Servers are new so expect some hiccups. Probably 40% of plates out of the kitchen were burgers-that is next on my list to try. Deserves a spot in the Friday night rotation. Laid back and casual. Spruce & Ash, Raising the Bar for Downtown Farmington Downtown Farmington has traditionally had few "exciting" dining options. Spruce & Ash has changed that! Typically for an enjoyable meal with friends while staying local, Plymouth or Downtown Northville was it. No more. First impression comes with the atmosphere, simple, but inviting and comfortable. And there is plenty of outdoor seating. Second, the menu is not overwhelming, but enough to cover a wide-array of dining preferences. Third, the food! Everything tasted amazing. There was 4 of us, so we were able to try many of the offerings. Deconstructed Potato Skins, the Cornbread Waffles with jalapeno peppers within the batter, the Fish and Chips, Lambchops, Carrot Cake and Peach Cobbler were all outstanding. As a side note, I would consider many of these dishes "comfort foods", but after dinner, I felt great. I get the impression most of the food is made from scratch down to the tarter sauce that comes with the Fish and Chips. Overall, I'm excited to have Spruce & Ash Downtown Farmington. read more

I don't normally bother to give a poor review to a start-up restaurant. However, not this time. The food was nutty expensive! The service was very unprofessional. No sides of any kind, no bread or rolls with dinner, or even offered at additional cost. My $ 35 dinner had 1 1/2 cups of watery mashed potatoes and beef stock gravy over 4 oz of Brisket and two 3" carrots. Seating for perhaps about 20 people, no insulation in the sheet metal ceiling, producing freezing temperatures so cold that we wore our jackets and hats, and they don't even serve coffee after morning. The cost for three cocktails and two one-bowl dinners totaled at $135.00 before any tip. Stay away unless you really like unprofessional service, terrible atmosphere, a very limited menu, and prices that suggest you dined at an upscale restaurant. Run to a real restaurant in Farmington. Never going back! I predict this place will not be open long. read more

My husband and I just ate here for happy hour (until 5:30 pm) and dinner. The Oceanside cocktail and Manhattan were tasty and hit the spot. Everything was delicious! The poutine had delectable gravy with cheese and slender shoestring crispy fries. The jalapeño cornbread waffle had the perfect degree of spicy and sweet. What a great addition to downtown Farmington!! The menu is small, but the food is fantastic. They've made sure to perfect what they make. The drinks were good, and some are a little creative. Everyone we engaged with was nice, but our server Nyla, she was exceptional!
