Service was solid, no complaints there. I ordered pasta, which in hindsight probably wasn't the right call for this type of place. My girlfriend had the pasta rosa and I went with the short rib pasta. The shrimp wasn't really "bang bang shrimp" like advertised, but it was decent enough. The French onion soup was actually a highlight -- the crunchy bread in it was a nice touch and gave it good texture. Where it fell short for me was the pasta. That might be partly on me for ordering it at a spot that isn't really an Italian restaurant, but still -- the sauce just wasn't good. The short rib itself was fine, but the sauce tasted like it came straight out of a can, which killed the dish. Overall, it feels like they're trying to position themselves as a higher-end restaurant based on pricing and location, but to pull that off, the food -- especially the ingredients and execution -- needs to be at a higher level. read more

8 of us tried out this cute new place in Farmington Hills. Our waitress was very friendly, but I feel like she was very overwhelmed. We ordered most of the appetizers... would recommend all of them, except the shrimp. The waffles were good, but didn't have any type of cornbread taste. Salad and soups were great... French onion soup was amazing. Everyone enjoyed the main dinners, except the steak frites was dry. We had to ask for zip sauce, because it just needed something. Even with some of the food being a miss, I would have given this place 5 stars, but I had to take off a star because we received our salads/soups and dinners at exactly the same time. It was such a let down... you don't know if you should continue with your app so it doesn't get cold, but then your main meal is cold. You should never bring both out at the same time. To top it all off, there was plenty of room and no one else coming in. Also, they need a few more dessert options. We had to go down the street for dessert, as the two didn't sound appealing. Spruce + Ash is doing it right. You think it's just a strip mall restaurant? Think again. Elevated, cozy ambiance. Loved the wrap around bookcase of the vestibule. This is a place you want to linger. Service is fantastic. Our waitress was the only one on the floor (!!) yet was personable, hilarious, and just a wonderful human being. Food & drink are better than you'd expect. Shrimp: idk what's in the chili sauce, but it's the best version of that I've ever tasted. Would order again. They do need a GF option for the crostini, it's unfair to pay the same price and not get the same amount of food. Spritz was perfectly balanced, I was tempted to order a second. Instead, they had a mocktail with fresh herbs and ginger that was actually worth consuming, it was not lacking in flavor at all. Love their commitment to limiting seed oils. I met an old friend here for brunch and we had the most lovely time! The space is cute and cozy. It's not huge but there are a good amount of tables and a bunch of bar seating as well. My friend and I hadn't seen each other in almost a decade and we were gabbing away and catching up that we kept forgetting to look at our menus but our awesome waitress was more than friendly and accommodating to our lack of focus! Everything on the brunch menu sounded great and we had a hard time deciding but ultimately we both landed on the short rib hash, which was excellent. My only complaint was I would have liked a little more short rib since it was so good but It was more than enough food. Oh, BTW--it was a Sunday afternoon and it was busy but not packed so I didn't feel bad about keeping a table going for a bit longer. The food here is amazing. Service seems to be sort of going downhill. We were told they were out of short rib, then as soon as we cashed out (which took forever btw) I heard someone tell a woman at the bar that "she got the last one". Pretty crappy. The staff were literally texting and socializing as we waited in a mostly empty restaurant to get our bill and boxes. I don't really mind people checking their phones I guess but having LOUD inappropriate conversations does not lend itself well to a restaurant charging these sort of prices. Only been open about six months now, but when it comes to appetizing and flavorful meals they hit the ground running! Order a table or sidle up to the bar and chat up the friendly bar staff. The fish and chips is a winner. Huge haddock filets are delicately battered and fried up moist and flaky. Add an extra filet for an up charge. And the fries!--they're shoestring skinny and fried in beef tallow. You can't stop eating them. It's the kind of place that makes you want to try a little of everything on their menu. Aside from sharing it with my favorite person, the highlights were the incredible service, cozy ambiance, and amazing food. Started with a refreshing Berry Smash (N/A) and we shared the Deconstructed Potato Skins that were filling, flavorful, and so unique. While we originally planned on the braised short ribs and lamb chops, we ended up ordering the Fish & Chips and Chicken Tenders. I know, you might wonder: Why order those at an upscale restaurant? Because they were that good! We finished the evening with a decadent slice of Carrot Cake...a special nod to our wedding, where carrot cake was also our choice. From the moment we walked in to the moment we left, the entire team was welcoming and attentive. The owner was a delight to chat with, clearly passionate about what they do, and it shows in every detail. The only thing we could say that moves the pros and cons needle would be the level of noise. If they are busy the conversation noise increases and make it difficult to chat at your table. You are engaged in the table to the back even if you are seated near the front. There is outdoor seating available. If you're hesitant about the pricing, don't be it's worth every penny (Note: They do not accept cash for payment, only credit cards; however, cash can be left as a tip.). Went here tonight for the first time. Decided to sit outside on the patio since it was such a nice night. Also much quieter than sitting inside. Really liked the drink menu, but the bar selection for other things like amaretto was a bit limited. The short rib was excellent. The fries cooked in beef fat were also top notch. My only complaints were that the server seemed very inexperienced and the steak I ordered was very well done even though I ordered it medium rare. Loved the waffle cornbread. For our entrees we had the beef short ribs, Nashville hot chicken sandwich and pasta. All were hot and delicious. Service was okay, waters needed to be filled more often. We came for our anniversary dinner and had the first available reservation. They were pretty busy on a summer Friday night. We arrived and were seated promptly. We chose inside as the patio was in full sun (there are umbrellas but not all seats will be shaded). Our server was prompt and knowledgable. She helped recommend some drinks for us and informed us it was happy hour! All cocktails $10, and discounted appetizers. That was a nice surprise! The limoncello spritz was refreshing and light, the El Sol was a little spicy and delish! We started with the deconstructed potato skins and they were delicious. Seriously good, no notes. The potatoes were a fingerling style that were gently smashed and topped with cheese, green onion, bacon & chipotle cream sauce. That sauce was out of this world. Then we got our dinner. I had the short rib and it was perfect. Genuine feel good comfort food. The beef fell apart at the slightest touch, the mashed potatoes were perfectly seasoned, and that gravy! The gravy was well balanced and brought it all together. No notes. The Nashville hot sandwich was very good, but mis named. It is a very good fried chicken sandwich. There really wasn't anything Nashville Hot about it. The waitress told us it isn't too spicy, but we struggled to find any heat at all. It was salted well, but no heat. The breading was good, and the cole slaw on the sandwich brought an acidic balance to it. All in all good sandwich, but if you're looking for a spicy Nashville hot sandwich this isn't it. Tried Spruce & Ash for the first time tonight with my wife, and it was an absolute home run. We kicked things off with the deconstructed potato skins (creative and delicious) and their French onion soup which was world class. For mains, I went with the lamb chops...perfectly cooked, tender, and flavorful...but the real surprise was the potatoes they came with... honestly some of the most unique smashed, Greek-ish potatoes I've ever had. My wife had the pasta rosa with shrimp...shrimp cooked to perfection, pasta was very tasty...everything was first rate. I really miss some dishes when they change the menu, but it gives me an opportunity to try something new things. This place has the best Monte Cristo I have ever had. The tallow fries are superbly amazing with flavors that bring back memories of childhood fries. Their breakfast options are also super amazing. I like the French toast, the pancakes, steak and eggs. I have never had a bad dish here all super delicious. Weekends are the hardest time to get a reservation so plan your reservations early. The prices are quite good for what you end up getting in such a delicious high-quality food. Some of our top favorites are the , steak and fries, spare ribs, the fish and chips chicken tenders, burger, and salad which they make a wonderful dressing. The dessert sounds wonderful but we've always get way too full from our meals to accomplish a dessert. Staff is friendly, service is A+ , the chef is nice and talented. The Nashville chicken sandwich was good, but was billed as "not too spicy", but in fact, it was very spicy. I don't mind spice, but please don't tell me that it's on the milder side, when it isn't. We wanted to like this place. Nice ambience and great waitstaff. Reasonable prices. Weird menu. Prides itself in frying all things in beef tallow. I don't eat beef, so I had my eye on the chicken and fish dishes, but they were all fried in the beef tallow. No offer to pan fry something for me instead. (Beef tallow is 50% saturated fat, which can raise "bad" LDL cholesterol and increase the risk of heart disease). My dining partner had steak and eggs, which came with dry cubed potatoes (but no toast). Just two eggs on a plate with a piece of steak and some cubed tallow-fried potatoes- no sauce of any kind, not a garnish on the plate. It was a very dry meal, the yolks providing the only moisture. I had shrimp and grits. It seems like they tried to sauté some onions in the pan before adding the shrimp, but the onions were neither fully carmalized nor raw, they were just that weird in between bitter flavor that causes burps. The sauce had a lot of grease in it, which floated on top of the grits, the texture was just mushy goop. Again no garnish or side offering. Everything was absolutely mediocre and disappointing. (There were items on the menu I would have enjoyed more, but they all involved beef tallow. I understand that they only have one fryer, which might be something they want to rethink in the future, or they could offer a quick pan fry for the fish or chicken). read more
