Our experience with this daycare was extremely concerning and unfortunately very short-lived…read more Within the first week (my child only attended four days), there were multiple safety incidents involving classroom doors that children were able to open. On the second day, I received a call that my child had opened the classroom door and exited into the hallway. Staff told me they were changing a diaper and didn't notice right away. Thankfully he was found quickly and had only made it to the first lobby door. When I picked him up shortly after, a staff member told me he had attempted to open the door several times within about 15 minutes. I asked what I could do to help prevent this from happening again and was told there was nothing needed from me and that staff would just remain on "high alert." I was also told that the center had discussed changing the door handles before but had not done so. A few days later, I received another call that my child had exited the classroom again while the class was cleaning up and only one teacher was present because the other teacher was on break. Earlier that same day there was also an incident where the children were outside playing and my child was able to walk to another classroom door and open it before being redirected. During the phone call about the second incident, the director stated that while they could redirect behaviors like not wanting to sit during circle time or meals, my child opening doors was "too much" for them to handle. She suggested we find another childcare provider and recommended a home daycare where there would be more one-on-one attention. This was confusing because the class only had about six students. What was frustrating is that all of the behaviors they raised concerns about were things we **fully disclosed during the tour before enrolling**. We explained that our child had never been in daycare before, does not talk yet, does not always follow verbal commands, and had recently discovered how to open doors. At the time we were reassured these were common toddler behaviors and that staff would redirect and work with him. There were also inconsistencies in the information we received. During pickup after the second incident, one teacher told me the situation happened while he was in her care, while earlier the director had told us a different teacher was responsible at the time. We were also told about an additional door incident that day but never received an incident report for it. I completely understand that teachers are responsible for supervising multiple children and cannot focus all of their attention on one child. However, when staff acknowledge that doors are not childproof and a child is able to open them multiple times within only a few days of attendance, that raises serious concerns about safety and preventative measures. Ultimately, we were advised by the director to find another childcare provider. We will be doing that and hope to find a program that is more willing to work with toddlers who are adjusting to their first daycare experience.

She has such a wonderful understanding of how little kids brains work and offers so many learning opportunities. The kids get plenty of time outdoors and got to go on many excursions to destinations like the Frye Art Museum and the South Transfer Station to see where our waste goes. We love that the kids get to cook together. The community we've cultivated while sending our kid here has been a blessing. I believe all of our children have benefited so much from the magical experience. Our son is more responsible, helpful to others and confident in his abilities as a result of spending time in this wonderful childhood ecosystem.

It's sort of like when you find an amazing restaurant that hasn't been discovered yet - you want to keep it on the down low so that other folk won't start crowding it and messing up the atmosphere. That's how it is with La Maternelle. Even though all the parents love it, there are very few reviews online - word just spreads through social circles. I may be actually breaking some kind of code by leaving this review. Awesome caring teachers; there's a wide spectrum of play, reading/math, and emotional health/regulation. A great place for a kid to learn how to be well-balanced. If you're wanting your kid to learn Chaucer and Calculus, you may have better luck at a school further north. If you want your children to learn how to treat other kids empathetically and be exposed to a wide variety of activities, whether visiting a nearby fire station or hiking at Seward Park twice a month, then this is the place for you. Oh yeah, they also teach the kids in French. And the lunch they serve is - yep, French food. Yum! We were always jealous of our kid because of that. So many pros...can't actually think of any cons even though I'm usually quite good at finding drawbacks.

From day one, Zoe was incredibly patient and supportive. She let us ease our first son in gradually with just a couple days a week, which helped him feel comfortable. Eventually, we transitioned to full-time, and now both our boys look forward to going every single day. What really sets this preschool apart is the creativity, warmth, and genuine care Zoe and Reed bring to everything. Each month has a fun new theme like post office, hospital, or construction site, and the kids get to learn through hands-on play. They've had visits from the local fire department with their fire truck and ambulance, music lessons with a music teacher, yoga classes, and even a visit from the Tumble Bus, which is a converted mobile gym. On warm days, they do water play in the backyard, which our boys absolutely love. The outdoor space is incredible. There's a huge backyard with chickens and other small, friendly farm animals, plus lots of room to play and explore. Even on rainy days, the kids still go outside to get fresh air and have fun. As parents, we've always felt confident that our kids are safe, happy, and learning. Zoe and her team send regular updates, photos, and videos through the Brightwheel app, which gives us so much peace of mind throughout the day. Now that we're moving and looking at other preschools, we realize just how special this one is. Nothing else has matched the level of engagement, creativity, and personalized attention that Zoe, Reed, Itzel, and Natalie bring to each child. We've also loved seeing the preschool grow from just a few families to a larger, vibrant community that still feels close-knit and personal. Happy Little Explorers isn't part of a big chain. It's a warm, home-grown preschool run by people who truly care, and it shows. We can't recommend it enough.

We arrived, signed in and she was off playing with only a bit of hesitation and I felt totally safe leaving my daughter with the friendly staff. We picked her up and she said she had 'the best time ever' and wanted to go back again every day. We'll be back! Update: 3/20/2010 We had my daughter's birthday party here- 12 preschoolers and as many parents joined us for an hour and a half for their 'Yellow Light' party package and it was FANTASTIC. The staff were so competent that I didn't have to lift a finger, we arrived 15 min before the party as requested and in just 10 minutes, they wisked the table full of the goodies, had the pinata hung up, the cake displayed and the whole place was perfect. The kids wandered in and each of them were greeted warmly and everyone was able to join the fun in progress. The staff were super with each and every kid, and based on the smiles and giggles, this was the best party ever. The staff had structured activities interlaced with free play and an easy transition to cake time, pinata and then goodbye. Before I could blink, they were loading my car with the cake and gifts and we were on our way home. Best party experience I can even imagine. SO EASY!
