TTM is a pedagogically-observant Montessori school, which will come as a relief to those parents…read morewho believe in the method and seek something more for their kids (and their expense) than a glorified day care. The classes are appropriately sized and more than adequately staffed with Montessori-trained guides & aides, and feature a full complement of beautiful wood, metal, and fabric Montessori-specific works arranged to allow curious minds instant access to meaningful, self-directed learning. The administrative staff is exceptional, led by a 20+ year veteran of both Pacific Crest Montessori & Northwest Montessori School. While transparently placing the student experience first (as they should), this administration takes great pains to accommodate the needs of parents by being respectful of the scant spare time available to most parents, and by reaching out to parents with lots of pertinent information & updates. The building itself is a high-security cruciform arrangement where toddler, primary, and elementary classes are housed in their own wings. It appears to be a former hospice or nursing home, the practical upshot of which is wide hallways and doors, bright sunny rooms, and lots of 'safety' hardware in common areas. The outside play areas are securely fenced (with locking, key-coded gates) and include play structures, gardening, and opportunities to get messy in real dirt in the time-honored tradition. The location is a quarter mile off WA-509 in Burien at 160th Street, just down the street from Highline Medical Center. We make the drive from Capitol Hill every day in 20 minutes. The location is also served by several bus lines from downtown Seattle (#131 & #121 pass 1/8 mi. to the east @ 160th & 1st; #123 1/8 mi. to the west @ 160th & 4th).

The staff are incredible and the families, along with the children are amazing. Each day I go to school, I am amazed by the love and ability of the teaching staff, class assistants and the support staff. Each one cares deeply for the children and it shows in all they do. I am also incredibly proud of our administration and board of directors. They have weathered many storms through the years well and led us through difficulties with wisdom, always putting the children and their care first.

Terrible experience and my daughter still has trauma. The 'bilingual' environment really just meant…read morethat many of the staff doesn't speak English, which makes it hard to communicate basic info about my child's day. There was also constantly different teachers at drop off/pickup. After a month of trying to make it work, it was clear my daughter was struggling badly. She cried so hard that she actually vomited twice, and I only found out because I noticed she was wearing her backup clothes--no one even bothered to tell me!!! (It's not typical for her to cry that bad) I was horrified that a daycare could fail so miserably at providing even the most basic level of care and comfort. The final straw was when we arrived one day to pick her up and found her crying alone on one side of the room while the teacher was busy wiping down tables on the other side, ignoring her entirely. We stayed to comfort her, waiting for any acknowledgment from the teacher, but she continued cleaning as though we weren't even there. After that day we withdrew our daughter and Carla Cabiya Ruiz still had the nerve to charge us for another month AND keep our deposit. While I understand 2 week periods are standard, a reputable daycare should show flexibility when it's obvious a child is suffering in their care. It was clear to us that they care more about squeezing every last dollar out of parents than about the well-being of children. If you value your child's happiness and safety, look elsewhere.

The best part about this school is THE PEOPLE and LEARNING SPANISH. All the teachers are super warm…read moreand caring. I loved hearing all the Spanish my son brought home with him, he still counts in Spanish for fun and says "no me gusta" when I tickle him. However, we took my son out of this school because we felt like there wasn't enough vigilance and coaching in regards to hitting. My son began to get upset when it was time to go to school in the morning, and to tell people about a boy at school that would hit him. Twice when I went to pick him up I had an incident report I had to sign about my son being hurt at school, and more than twice, while I was at the school, I saw this boy hit my son and other kids. He was not separated from the other children and continued to walk around and hit multiple students. I can't tell if the teachers are hesitant to discipline the boy because they don't want any liability if the parents become upset at their discipline, or if it is a cultural difference, as I have noticed some Latino cultures give more freedom to boys. What I can say is that my son was so scared to be left alone with this boy at school that he would cry desperately any time he knew he were headed to school. When I saw the boy hit my son right in front of me while I was there, I knew that this was not a safe place for my child and the teachers were not looking out for my son's welfare up to my standards. When I told the school owner that my son was very upset when I tried to leave him at school and it was taking me 15-20 minutes to be able to leave in the mornings, she said that they could try different techniques to help me leave, but I don't think she ever talked formally to the teachers to address the issue or help with the transition because nothing changed and no one came to help us. When I told her that I planned to remove my son from the school because he was too upset to return, she said fine and never asked me why or if she could do anything to help. I asked her for the $400 deposit we left when we registered and she said that was non-refundable. This doesn't make sense to me since we paid for all of our time at the school, the two weeks would have been extra time my son did not attend, but she would not budge on refunding our $400. I think this is very poor business and poor customer service. It seemed, at the time, that she did not care that my son was upset, that we had to transition schools, or that she was keeping my $400 against my will. It was not the way I would have liked to leave that school, but we cleared out his locker because I didn't want him to have to go there ever again.

Miss Q offers monthly tuition or drop off options. Miss Q is patient, caring and knowledgeable in child development. Any concerns that we have about our child or goals we would like to achieve she works with us and is always communicating through text and in person during pick up. For example two years ago our son was in pull-ups and Miss Q was on the same page with us about potty training, and now our son is fully potty trained. Currently we are working on preparing him for kindergarten. This summer my husband and I felt that he may not be ready come fall 2020 but within months of setting goals with Miss Q we have seen significant growth in our child. She keeps the kids busy with learning activities and open play. She really knows how to balance the kids schedules. Our little one loves coming to school and is exited to learn. Everyday we pick him up he always comes home with at-least three artworks/activities. She keeps her school clean and organized and I never feel uneasy when dropping my child off. My husband and I are so thankful we found a school that can accommodate our work schedule and provide our child with social interactions with kids his age as well as incorporating preschool activities. We appreciate you Miss Q!

School quality was not our first thought when we chose our home, we just wanted a safer neighborhood. We loved Bible Park, I had lived in the area previously, we knew it was a perfect fit for us. It was the perfect place for us until we were placed with a 3rd and 6th grader in September of 2013. And it wasn't the place that was the problem, it was the schools. tWe immediately toured our local elementary school and middle school. When we toured the elementary school, there was a real fear that our son would be quickly grouped with other kids in the area who have lacked regular schooling, maybe had no parental involvement at home, and who were among the 25% of kids that changed schools every year. And if our youngest was assumed to be part of this group of kids, would the teachers invest the time and energy into him that we knew he would need? We then found an opening at a different magnet school in the area. We were excited about the possibility of our 3rd grader and 6th grader going to the same school while they endured such dramatic changes in their lives. And this school was amazing for our third grader. They specialized in English as a second language students who had large gaps in their education. And our third grader was taken under the wing of some good hearted teacher and he made some huge advances. But our 6th grader floundered. See our oldest is highly intelligent. But he had 11 years of using his intelligence just having to do just enough to exceed the average of his peers. And his peers were mostly struggling with poverty. His peers had not had expectations to succeed in school. And when he started at this school it became quickly evident that his peers had not changed much from his previous 6 years of education. What you may not understand about the dynamic of being a foster to adopt parent is that our kids absolutely do not trust that our expectations and rules for them are ever associated with our love, care, or best wishes for them. They are just another thing that is different and wrong about the life they are now forced to live. So if their friends don't have rules, if their friends don't have to get high grades, if their friends don't have to do their homework, it reinforces their already held belief that their new parents are unfair, and don't get what they are going through. And our version of love is a language that they have no interest in learning. When we tried to be proactive regarding the education of our 6th grader, requesting regular status updates, we were assured that it would happen. But routinely we were surprised with disappointing grades, and the progress in our oldest's education seemed stalled throughout 7th grade as well. We could not trust him to be supervised if he hung out with friends. When requesting effort from our oldest, we were legitimately confronted with the fact that most of his peers were not expected to put effort into their education at school or at home. Our youngest had made good progress in this school in 3rd and 4th grade but we were scared he would face the same middle school future at this school. We knew it would be hard for a seventh grader to switch schools but we were determined to salvage his last year before high school. We did not expect that we would get into Highline. It was a long shot, and we were thrilled when we got in. The differences in this school were much more than we even expected. It starts with the front desk. Every other school we had encountered, the front dest was like the DMV. But the front desk at Highline was eager to facilitate any needs. The 5th grade team with Ms. Chandlier has taken our 5th grader under their wing as I see them doing with a number of kids. His academic progress is astounding. He was doing sight words and muddling his way through the occasional Dr. Seus book midway through 3rd grade, not registering on any reading ability scales. This year Ms. Chandlier and him set the high goal of reading Harry Potter books by the end of the year. This is a goal that has already been reached. And for all of our youngest's success I am just as grateful for what Highline has given our 8th grader. After 8 years of just getting by, after 8 years of just staying off the radar, our oldest has made tremendous progress in doing more than just using his high intelligence to be lazy. He has become an active partner in his education. He has made choices to try to be a successful student thanks to the partnership we have with his teachers. And his chances of high school success are much more than I could have hoped for when he entered Highline Academy. I am so jealous of all of these kids who have had this amazing experience for 9 years. All of this success does not just happen. It is a result of a team and community that that are all working towards the same goal.

If you have an infant they will not track how many bottles were given or the amount of milk the baby drank. In most facilities, this is easily tracked on a whiteboard or in a user-friendly app (Brightwheel) so this is below the norm. Our baby literally stopped sleeping through the night on days that he would attend this daycare. He came home ravenous and needed meal supplementation in the middle of the night. They tried to blame growth spurts but it went on for weeks and only happened on days he attended their daycare.... it has resolved in the week since we left this facility. You'll also never receive photos of your child during daycare. I really value this since preschool age kids often look at you with a blank stare if you ask them what they did during school that day. Again, most daycares use Brightwheel to send you photos of activities they are doing throughout the day. In my child's previous daycare he was sent home each week with their artwork/educational materials based on what they were learning. I received 3 pieces of paper the entire month there. I'm not convinced there's many creative activities going on and since there's VERY limited communication provided to parents I can only speak to what I see coming home. Masks are not worn and there are older kids coming from the large surrounding schools in the afternoon. Your kids deserve better than what the two women running this facility provide.

I was reminded that all teachers are front-line workers, keeping our children safe and happy, engaged and cared for while parents and grown-ups everywhere navigate these unprecedented times. This is what blew my mind today; it was soooo amazing to see these little angels building castles and digging in the garden and squealing with delight when they find a worm, a spider's web, a dandelion; there are 3 (THREE!) 3' long slides and no less than 3 (THREE!) castles! Or boats! Or a ship!; whatever their little imaginations can think of! And of course many forms of kiddy transportation with 2 (or 3) wheels to drive around this fun, age-appropriate play area all firmly nestled in a sea of forgiving cedar chips!! Both inside and out are toys galore; it is a-dor-able to watch these children learn as they play; social interaction; sharing, helping, painting, reading, building on manners and respect for their playmates and teachers! Each child receives individual gentle care appropriate to her age and older kids have basic school work and of course EVERYONE does crafts!!! There will never be enough glitter!! This entire operation is passionately overseen by Miss Jennifer whose enthusiasm for early learning is as obvious and impressive as the more than 30 years she has dedicated to preparing your child for kindergarten. Miss Jennifer also employs 4 dedicated teachers who LOVE children and genuinely love their job; the joy reflected between helper and child is obvious; parents picking up their little Miracles are always greeted by happy (and hopefully tired!) charges who are excited to tell Mommy/Daddy about their day! Happy happy happy children!! Can I get a job there?? No really, are you hiring?!"
