I've debated whether or not to post a review for Bright Horizons since it's tough enough for us working parents to leave our children during the day. Therefore, hearing about negative experiences about daycare is not exactly ideal to put our minds at ease. However, after thinking about it for a couple of months, I felt I needed to share our experience. I want everything to be roses for our child, but I was severely let down by BH in West Seattle. I pulled our child out after one day.
Our 16-month old daughter started daycare on the same day as 4 (maybe 5) new students. That was the first red flag that I did not find out about until after the fact. When I dropped off our child, I walked into a room of several crying toddlers. There were two teachers, but only one was trying to console the traumatized kids. My child settled in nicely, so I left the room since she appeared to have adjusted well. It was the first day, so I returned back to pick her up a few hours later...
Lunch had apparently just ended and it looked like a food bomb went off-- the place was a disaster. The teachers were starting to get the kids ready to take a nap. Unfortunately, when I walked in, I witnessed one of the teachers abrasively throwing down a mat and starting to yell at the kids telling them that they know better. Actually, they don't really know better-- they're babies still trying to figure out the world. Anyhow, the minute the teacher started yelling, I saw my daughter on the floor go from her usual smiling face to breaking out in tears. It broke my heart. Perhaps I've over shielded her, but she is not accustomed to seeing harsh body language and yelling. The non-yelling teacher told me that it's normal for children to cry their first week.
I picked her up and immediately left the room. I told the front desk that I did not like what I had witnessed and wasn't sure if we would be back. When I went to put her in her car seat, she just continued to cuddle me and would not let go... again, it further broke my heart that she was apparently effected by the event.
Perhaps it was just circumstantial that particular day, but I still could not manage to bring my child back the next day. We spoke to the Director afterwards, and she did tell us that the teacher admitted that they had screwed up. I'm not a child expert, but the more I thought about it, I believe the Director should have been more proactive and realized that the teachers would be overwhelmed with several new kids starting on the same day. Ideally, she should've figured out a way to get them some help. Again, I did not like what I had witnessed and the issue felt further compounded with a lack of proper management. I had lost trust that it would get any better.
Ultimately, we did receive a partial refund of our enrollment fees. Overall, it was just not a good fit for us. Our neighbor's son continues to go to BH and they like it. I recommend that you really take the time to watch the teachers in action prior to enrolling. Deep down we wanted BH to work, so we may not have done enough due diligence prior to enrolling. Overall, the facility is nicely designed as if it were a school and they appeared to have a good meal program. Beyond that, it fell short of our hopeful expectations. read more
