The cabin-like décor is anything but campy at Messhall. The thematic notes throughout the…read morerestaurant are embedded in the details, from the plates to the decor on the wall, the bathroom doors, and some of the menu items too. It's the perfect place to get your buzz on before you get yourself to The Greek. Or simply grab some bites and connect with friends in a casual setting. Personally, I choose to sit at the bar, but there are communal tables and more intimate booths, as well as patio seating with the massively tall, old, and iconic everygreen trees along Los Feliz Blvd. to further set the tone. I've been coming here for years just for the oysters. I'm a glutton for those shucked delicacies and Messhall does it up right for a great price during happy hour. On Tuesdays, they're $1 each and Wednesday Happy Hour prices are $2/oyster. They're always fresh and served with mignotte sauce (shallots + red wine vinaigrette). I like to pair my oysters with a martini so I often opt for the Gin Gimlet ($10) because crazy people love their gin. Or if you can take advantage of their Mini 'Tini ($6), then do so. Again, I go for a Gin Mini 'Tini because well, crazy people love gin. However, Vodka is another option for these adorable mini drinks for lightweights like moi. For the carnivorous souls, the Backyard Burger looks filling enough and there's a Hangar Steak with Frites (aka fries) that looks amazing and you can get that for $20 during Wednesday nights, which isn't bad these days for a solid piece of moo. The "Blackened Shrimp Slider" on the HH Menu isn't bad for $3. So if you're jonesing for a cabin-like vibe with a modern twist, Messhall is a good stomping ground for locals, and bar service is always on point. *** FUN FACT: Speaking of those evergreen trees just out front. They're often confused for pine trees, but they're actually "Cedar Deodora Trees" that were planted in the 1920s. They're like a century old now, which further adds to the charm of this area. Now if only they could share their opinions of Messhall. I bet they'd have a few campfire stories of their own to tell. ***

The sides are pretty small for their price. The Crudo only had a few pieces of fish. The biscuits were good, buttery. Happy hour ends at 6 PM, so you could come earlier to get some drinks and then start the oysters at 6 PM. The mai tai was not very accurate, didn't really taste like a true mai tai. Overall, I would come back for the $1 oyster deal, but I wouldn't order anything else next time, only the oysters

Indoor and outdoor seating available. What they do make is delicious. Pasta, burgers, Mexican, chicken, salads, a salad bar. All affordable. But you may want to plan your lunch hour earlier rather than later (like 11:30). If you have your heart set for a specific menu item, you may be disappointed if you don't get there early. Some stuff runs out. If it's gone, they're not making any more. I've been disappointed to have to make a second choice in a moment's notice on two different occasions in four visits. I only have a 30-minute lunch and have little time for a cook to make something. I'm usually ordering something packed up and ready to go. This would otherwise be 4 stars, but it's 3 because they don't always have what I want.

Sometimes along the way, I find a home, like Public Works. First I had to observe and report, then I had to observe and report, now I have to observe and report. All that observing and reporting makes me hungry and this cafeteria does not disappoint. I've installed custom stainless steel stuff in this kitchen that I cut out and shaped myself! I've checked behind the fridges and coolers, this place is clean. Cafeterias, Cantinas, Chow Halls, all hold a special place in my heart (they feed me). My bosses are hiring again, why they don't promote first? I'll never entirely understand (I work so hard). I hear these candidates asserting themselves, freezing up, oscillating and bending at the waist. I want to tell them there's an obstacle course for laborer applicants, but they aren't laborer applicants because no one starts from the bottom anymore - it's romantic and old fashioned, it's quaint and rustic, it's over. For me it's the classic novel found on a shelf in the middle of the night, devoured like a piece of meat. Ground chuck, ground floor, it's the parking lot below the ground floor actually, it's the shovel and the gravel, the shot put and the post hole digger, anyways I could go on forever about what it is and what it isn't, but this cafeteria though, what they've got is a griddle where the eggs spread thin before hardening, and then the other ingredients can be wrapped inside a cozy egg blanket, and then it all gets rolled up into a tasty tortilla. There's salsa and a salad bar, there are sandwiches and snacks, coffee and juice, don't be afraid, it's only lunch.

If you're looking for an old-school LA bar with history dripping from the walls, Cole's French Dip…read moreabsolutely delivers. My mom and I came here because Michael Connelly mentions Cole's in his Bosch book series--and we're huge fans--so this stop felt a little like a literary pilgrimage. We came on a Saturday afternoon and immediately felt welcomed. The bouncer was super friendly and took the time to explain how everything works: order at the bar, grab a number, and sit wherever you like. Easy and laid-back. Of course, we came for the French dip--the very sandwich Connelly writes about--and it did not disappoint. Cole's claims to be the home of the original French dip, and honestly, I believe it. We both ordered the USDA Prime beef, which came with a pickle and a side of au jus. The bread was perfectly crunchy, the meat incredibly tender, and once you dipped the sandwich into the au jus... pure harmony. Absolute star of the show. I also had a margarita, which was solid, but let's be real--the French dip is the reason you come here. Even though it's a bar, people under 21 are allowed until 7pm, and there's a pool table if you want to hang out and soak in the vibe. The whole place feels like a time capsule in the best way possible. What a great old-school LA institution. We'll definitely be back.

Went here just to be able to say I've gone prior to them closing, honestly, it was a $32 mistake…read more The service was terrible, we sat at the bar and the bartender seemed very annoyed with the fact she had to do her job. I hate to say we felt like a genuine inconvenience for simply wanting to order. We got the 1/2 combo with beef, Swiss and a side of pickled eggs. You'd assume for 20 bucks you'd be getting a relatively large portion, nope, quite literally less than 5inchs of sandwich. It was alright, the au jus was lukewarm, bread was good, not too much meat but the cheese was literally not melted whatsoever. The pickled eggs had no pickled taste, they must've just been put in that day or the night prior. We were out of there quick as a drunk guy had been harassing us the entire time. I won't be missing this place, I regret going to begin with but curiosity and a need to feel like I got to try a piece of history got the best of me. Don't come unless you absolutely can't help it, this place is severely underwhelming at best.
