I've shopped here for about two years now, both with and without a Groupon or other voucher offers. The selection is amazing. The quality of meats are top notch and they will give you any type of cut you request (they do ask for a little notice if you want something not typical, which is totally fair). You can bring them a sausage recipe and for a minimum order will make sausages for you. The crabcakes - are the BEST I have ever had. All meat and delicious. They are a little pricey on the seafood - however it's a butcher shop, not a fish market. The prices are reasonable - especially compared to shopping at a higher end grocery store. I moved and it's no longer on the way home for me - but I do stop in whenever I can as the food has never spoiled on us, has always been good quality, the staff is friendly enough, knowledgeable and willing to wrap anything in any way requested. If you are going to shop on the last day of a Groupon (I've only done this once and although we were in and out in under 40 minutes... never again) there will be a very long line. They will run out of things. Don't be a jerk and give them low marks for your laziness. read more

The last time was the worst, tons of attitude given if you don't know what you want right away or happen to change your mind. After reading these reviews, I had to wonder if two different butcher shops were being reviewed...or if some disgruntled party is planting negative reviews. I have been buying meat from Springfield Butcher for years and have never, ever found the meat to be anything but fresh and delicious. I'm sure I would have noticed had I seen anyone handling my order without gloves since I'm very particular about cleanliness and the food I eat. The employees may not be "warm and fuzzy", but they have always been very helpful and efficient....even when I have used a Groupon. Their pricing is appropriate for better quality meat. I just found this place, and it's amazing. Great food, priced about right. I bought the NY Strips and the kielbasa. Steaks cooked up perfectly and tasted great. This is much better than a Harris Teeter steak, so don't compare it. Kielbasa had a nice garlic flavor and a great price. I like the fact that they have bison too (although I went during a Groupon rush so they were out). I don't think I'd make this my primary meat place, but if I'm picking up a nice steak for a special occasion, I'm not going anywhere else. read more

Fantastic service, and great meats. All of the meats are grass fed and fresh. I've been going here for several years, and never had a bad experience. If you buy a larger cut of meat they'll even cut it up or trim it for you at no extra charge. They also sharpen knives for a very reasonable fee. read more

This place is the best! I'm a frequent shopper and am very surprised to see that people complain about the customer service. I've never experienced anything but fantastic customer service from helpful employees (even before I became a regular). Meats are delicious and the crab-stuffed shrimp has become a regular fixture in my meal rotation. The Groupon makes it a great deal but I would shop here whether or not I had one. If I could give this place no stars, I would. All of the negative reviews on here are true, do not go to this place. Where do I start? I went here yesterday to use my Groupon. First, they had a message on a easel for Groupon customers saying something about "We want to thank the majority of our customers for following the terms of the Groupon rules. I used a Groupon at this place about a year ago and had a decent experience, so when I saw the deal again I bought several of them. As usual, I took a number and looked at the selection of meat. I was shocked by the prices because the last time I was able to get 4 pork chops, 2 ribeye steaks, 3lbs of hamburger meat and 4 sausages all for around $32. I thought this was a steal. This time around the prices have gone up to the prices of the Whole Foods and The Organic Butcher but none of the meat is organic or cage free. $18 for ribeye steak, $5 for ground beef, $5 for sausages. This is place is lacking in terms of poultry products and is heavy in pork and beef. Upon ordering, I learned that customer service is just plain lacking almost missing. I requested half of a turkey breast they refused to cut this for me. Then I saw they had turkey cutlets in the window but I wanted them without bacon, they refused my request again. Finally, I decide to get a rib-eye steak at $18lb and two chicken breasts. Third, I watched them touch my meat with bare hands and wrap it in styrofoam and plastic, who still uses this. Once my meat was package, I told them I had a groupon, I was instructed that my total was around $3, I pulled out my credit card and was told in order to use it I needed to spend another $12 because they have a $15 minimum. I told them the Groupon said nothing about this, I looked a some more meat and told them I mostly eat chicken and turkey, if you split the turkey breast open I will buy it to meet the minimum. For the second time, my request was denied. I said well swipe my card for $3, I was then told that we are losing money by letting you spend $3 instead of the full $15. I said again, my groupon said $13 for $26 worth of meat, it doesn't mention spending an additional $15 to use a credit card. They continued to argue with me, finally I told them I was not going to the bank to get $3, no other store would request this they would just eat the cost. I tried to explain customer services, while the owners just stood there and did nothing. They went on to explain, this is not fair to our regular customers, who have to spend $15 to use a credit card. I said what does this have to do with me, I need to you to put $3 on my card- do you understand this? Finally, I told them to keep the meat, I will be calling Groupon to let them know that your not honoring the terms and conditions of my deal and your trying to impose additional costs, I will get my money back. They did not say a word, and I walked out without my meat. I will never go to this business again, and I really hope that Groupon will stop doing business with them. The owner and the employees have no concern for customer services, it's no wonder they always have Groupon deals. read more

I have been going to this shopping plaza for Trader Joe's for years and only discovered Springfield Butcher from a Living Social deal and I'm so glad that I did. This is any carnivore (or pescavore)'s heaven. The meats were amazing. I also got chicken kabobs, chicken cordon bleu, and delicious shrimp. The sides and frozen items also looked good but I didn't try them. The only suggestion I have is to offer wild salmon instead of farmed. read more

Despite the place being packed - the butchers asked how my day was, recommended purchases, and even gave me ideas for cooking. Groupon users beware! An unexpected trip to care for an ailing relative meant that my Groupon expired last week. I figured that the Groupon promise that the voucher was like cash or a gift card, paid in full for the face value, would buy their merchandise. Wrong. I slogged through pre-Thanksgiving traffic, only to discover they couldn't be bothered to honor expired Groupons until the Saturday after Thanksgiving, even though it's just as quick to scan them as a credit card. If you have a Groupon, expired or not, I suggest you call them just before you leave to verify they're taking them that day, and get the name of the person you talked to. Otherwise, you may find yourself with a worthless piece of paper in your hand. read more

So someone referred me to this place because of the crab cakes, which, granted, are not bad. However, I've been to this location twice and have had bad experiences both times. The first time, I bought a leg of lamb from a rude employee & when I got it home, it was ALL bones and no meat. I got $40 worth of bones. Didn't make anyone but my dog happy. The other time, I came in on a Monday with a living social deal, because I had heard of a promotion on crab cakes, known as "crabby Mondays." Well, apparently this is not a weekly thing, & does not appear to be offered to everyone. (They appear to have some particular customers that they treat well. BEWARE: They also give you a hard time about using a discount deal, which makes you wonder why they even sell them, other the the fact that the word must be getting out about their horrible customer service!). Anyway, the employee told me that the butcher does the "crabby Monday" special "whenever he feels like it." This begged the question "well is today a crabby Monday?" The butcher looked at me & screamed "NOOOOOOOO!!!" in the loudest, rudest voice I'd ever heard! Um, it's not crabby Monday?? You coulda fooled me! Needless to say, I never went back. Dropping a ton of money in this place will just anger you, when you meet the owner. Save your money and buy quality products from someone who deserves the business. read more

Whoever wrote the post about lack of selection is absolutely crazy. They have venison, goat, bison, and many other delicacies. As for the seafood selection, it is offered as a convenience and this is a butcher shop, not a seafood/butcher shop. They also offer whole cows/half cows and various freezer packs, and prepared dishes. I don't know what the reviewer wants from a small shop. The quality of their meat is exceptional, and Mike, the owner, couldn't be nicer or more helpful. I visited Springfiled Butcher on Oct. 14, 2017 around 1.5 hours before closing. There was NO Wait! I was impressed with the selection. The shop is clean and tidy! My neighbor recommended this shop and allowed me to use her Groupon! All I can say is wow!! The prepares meatballs were Devine and the crab cake was delicious. This will definitely be my go to for high quality meats and seafood. In comparison to Wegmans which has high prices on prime-I'd rather go here and get the personal attention, cuts and sizes I need and freshness. It is a little pricy, but you get what you pay for!! Use the Groupon or just simply treat yourself. Having grown up in Philly and always getting fresh meats, Italian sausages etc... this made me feel like I was shopping in South Philly's Italian Market. read more

So happy to find our butcher shop! We are new to the Alexandria/Springfield area. When we found Trader Joe's and Whole. Foods we found this butcher. Yay!!! The first time or two we looked to see what was available and stopped in just to talk to them. We have eaten incredibly good steak, and other cuts of pork and beef, and recently purchased all of the meats we would use for our Thanksgiving week festivities involving 6 days of cooking three meals a day for 7-9 people. Whew! So off we went buying chuck roasts, meatball mix, fowl, and who knows what all. We put it in the fridge and it lasted well all week. My meatballs were FABULOUS using their mix of three meats (veal, ground pork, and lean ground beef). The roasts were succulent and delicious! Remember that when you get home, this meat will not stay bright red. It is not injected with color or preservatives. It will gradually turn a little brown on the surface. That is fine! It will last in the fridge for several days. We want to try some sausage and seafood next. This is a good butcher shop, they know what they are doing! Go! read more

So I just stopped in to grab a couple of Ribeye's to throw on the grill this afternoon. I walked in and they were calling out numbers. I was treated like I was a total idiot by the guy behind the counter because I didn't know where to get my number. I spent 42 bucks at their place of business and got treated like that? LOVE the quality of the prodcuts that I get when I go to Springfield Butcher. I have been about 5 times and it is the only place I go when I want lamb meat. I have also been happy with the steaks, fish, and ground beef that I have purchased. It is more expensive than the grocery store, but I really like the freshness of what I receive. And hey, if you are using a Groupon, it more than works itself out. As far as the staff - I have always had friendly experiences. No complaints. read more

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but I really hate it when businesses try to pull the wool over your eyes. I've getting into cooking ribeyes and beef recently and I've been all over nova buying choice and prime meats. Costco, supermarkets, etc. I thought I'd try a butcher shop this time. Immediately when I came in, I made my way to the steaks. I saw a sign saying "prime" ribeye and I was immediately skeptical. The marbling on that steak looked more like select. However, I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt and pay for the price of a prime ribeye anyway. I came home and tossed it onto my cast iron (after seasoning it, of course) and began he cooking process. I love my cast iron and it has cooked me many delicious steaks in the past; however, not even my cast iron can take a shit quality piece of beef and turn it into something good. My skepticism was as high as ever, so I made sure to prepare this steak with the utmost care, even making sure to cut against the grain as carefully as possible. Unfortunately, the steak was tough and probably the worst ribeye I have eaten in years. I cooked it to a very even medium rare but I might as well have cooked it well done. For comparison, I also had a ribeye (labeled as choice) that I bought from a Giant. I cooked it afterwards with a lot less attention and it was miles better. Basically melted in my mouth and guess what... the marbling on it had been noticeably better. This is my experience. Take it for what it is. I'm not trying to be mean, but that ribeye was definitely not a prime, despite the fact that I paid a prime price for it. read more

I've been going to Springfield Butcher for years. Even prior to them running Groupons and Living Social Deals. The best service and quality in the area. They offer unique items like wild boar sausages, venison sausages and grass fed beef. Even with the groupon, we often spend way over the amount! The reason I put 4 stars instead of 5 is I would like them to offer more organic and free range options than they have. Their bacon is wonderful but I was disappointed it's not nitrate free. Their chickens aren't organic. We pay more for the grass fed beef but it's worth it! read more

Good stuff here - the prices are somewhat high, but for the quality of meat, it's worth it, and besides, they have Groupons and LivingSocial deals on a regular basis. Went today at the beginning of a snowstorm, when they were PACKED - they were dealing with things like champs, though, efficient, well-organized and surprisingly quick. Generally have gotten cheerful, friendly, and very helpful service here. They have a lot of interesting game meats (often in the form of sausages, ground meat, and other useful easy-to-prepare forms) - venison, wild boar, rabbit, game hen, etc. - plus things like beef hearts, calf liver, and soup bones. I'm a vegetarian myself, so can't offer personal testimony, but my meat-loving husband and son have given thumbs up to everything I've gotten for them here, especially the sausages. The grass-fed beef is also quite good, and they offer some pre-stuffed, pre-assembled meats like Chicken Cordon Bleu, stuffed pork chops, stuffed chickens, and kabobs (you pay for the convenience, naturally). DON'T overlook the free-range local eggs when they have them - they're wonderful, with gorgeous bright-gold yolks. (Some of them have pale green shells, for that extra touch of Seussian authenticity for those of you who like to make "green eggs and ham" with your kids...) The rubs and spice mixes are overpriced but decent - you'd do better at Penzeys. And the seafood doesn't look all that enticing - stick to the turf. But what they do well, they do it REALLY well. I love their Groupons and Specialicious deals, but honestly, I would still buy meat here even if they didn't have the deals. The deals just make it easier for me to stock up for my family of five. I live in Centreville and whenever I know I'm going to be going near Springfield, I pack my cooler and ice packs in my car so that I can swing by the butcher while I'm down there. Their meat is just plain superior to Giant/Shoppers/Safeway, and a better deal than Wegmans/Whole Foods. I have always gotten great service, regardless of whether I have a Groupon or not. The reviewer who complained that they have a credit card minimum and "no other business does this" is wrong - many independent retailers have a minimum for credit card purchases, it's posted in the store (and was in August, when the reviewer posted), and it's understandable. The bank charges a minimum charge for a credit card swipe, so credit cards mean that they lose money. I always bring my checkbook with me because I appreciate that it's harder for a small, locally owned business. The employees have always been helpful and polite - even carrying my purchases out to my car for me. They don't have a huge amount of poultry, but I'm not sure what people expect. They have whole chickens and split chicken breasts (which they will de-bone and/or skin for you upon request) and some pre-prepared items such as chicken cordon bleu. read more

As a midwest farm girl who is used to having family raised meat-I am fussy about the products I feed my family. This butcher shop? Is worth the drive. The prices? you get what you pay for. I used my groupons-how I discovered them; and the price/value with the groupon is hands down a great deal. We love the crab cakes, I take them home, season them, add bread crumbs and they are better then any 5 star restaurant. The steak, venison and port are all fresh, tender and high quality. We will continue to use them as the only meat source for our family. Customer Service? Quick and efficient, never have had a problem. Even on crazy last day groupons-I highly recommend them. We drive from Reston to get meat here-it is that good and worth it. No frills-reminds me of the local meat processors at home..Kind of a comfort to find this in the beltway. read more

Reading through the other reviews I did notice a trend towards employees not washing their hands in between touching meet and working the register. Sometimes I think people are a little too worried about this. I would think that this place would have been closed down due to a lack of business if multiple people were getting sick from this issue. The place smelled very clean compared to other butcher shops I have been in. All of the meet looked very good, and were nice cuts. It would be nice if they used butcher paper to wrap meet, but it is more sanitary how they wrap it. Cracks me up that people are worried about germs, but want it wrapped in butcher paper in the next sentence. read more

This review is based on our last two experiences with Springfield Butcher. Our first experience was satisfactory, but our last two experiences involved use of a Groupon. I see a pattern... The first time we used a Groupon, my husband asked if they had tri-tip since there was none in the cases, and the young woman, without answering, said "how much?" in a rude, sarcastic manner. She didn't say how much it costed per pound, so my husband asked for however much made $26 (the amount of our Groupon). My husband is super friendly and can usually melt a block of ice, but not this one. We gave them another chance on June 25th since the Groupon deals are hard to turn down. The same rude girl was there, who shouted at the group of customers who'd recently come in (most with Groupons in hand), "Please get a number!" As if the tiny stand on the corner of the counter with plastic numbers hanging on it was so obvious, how could we have missed it. Rude Girl called our number and she didn't crack a smile in greeting - she just seems really angry to be there. This time, we felt pressured to know exactly what we wanted, since last time she barked at my husband. I was brave enough to ask about the difference between two different cuts of steak we were deciding between, and her answer was to suggest that I look at them to see the difference. I didn't dare press her further. This time, we finished our transaction without being condescended or barked at. She did handle our pork chops and steak with bare hands, but I don't know for sure whether she washed her hands between taking our plastic number and handling the meat, and in between handling beef and pork... though I highly doubt it. We also witnessed the altercation described by another reviewer between her and a male employee. Overall pros: They're close to my house. Good deals with Groupon. They have hard-to-find cuts of meat. Overall cons: Their grass-fed beef section is very smal. Their use of styrofoam and plastic wrap (instead of paper) makes me cringe. Their staff is rude. They're lax with hand-washing. They have obvious contempt for Groupon users, which is baffling since it's obviously bringing people in. Bottom line: I'll pay more at Whole Foods or Farmer's Markets for free-range beef and pork, and service with a smile. read more

I had read through a lot of reviews on this site about the Butcher before buying my first groupon and decided I would try it once to see what I thought. First impressions: I have been in many butcher shops and this was one of the cleanest and best smelling that I have been into. Based on reviews about busy time periods, I went during the day, during the week and was immediately greeted in a friendly manner. I started asking questions about the different cuts of meat and the staff's recommendations and the staff were very helpful. I chose two boneless rib-eye steaks and a couple of sausages. Prices were a bit high for the steak, comparable to farmers' market, Whole Foods, or Harris Teeter; the rest of the prices were middle of the road. BUT, I have had steaks from the aforementioned places plus a couple of other butchers in the area and these were literally the best steaks I have been able to purchase. Even though I used a groupon, I would pay full price for these steaks knowing the quality. They had great flavor, I could see the butcher cutting some that were then put into the case (so I am not sure why there were comments about "old" meat). All I did with the steaks was salt/pepper/olive oil and pan sear them. The sausages were also quite flavorful. I have now been back 5 more times for more steak and other cuts of meat. The butchers have always been friendly and helpful. When I asked about getting some lamb cubed (at a later date) for some stew, I was told that they would be glad to cube it for me if called ahead of time or if I came in, asked for it and then gave them a little bit of time with it (they were not busy at the time). The meat continues to be lovely. I have now tried pork chops, hamburger, hot dogs, an eye round steak (made very nice fresh deli roast beef) and every single type of boneless steak except the filet (I like more fat in my meat). I have never been disappointed by their service or the quality of their products. Oddly they were having a special on the BBQ pork and I tried their Texas version and really liked it. I will continue to go here with or without a groupon and will try to turn other meat eating friends on to them as well. read more
