I live about 45 minutes away, but tried Springfield Butcher when they offered a Groupon. The meat quality is so much better than what you can buy at the grocery store for the same price. They will wrap it in smaller packages so you can freeze it too. It would be difficult to buy meat from the grocery again after buying it here. read more

Good meat, and I appreciate the groupons, but the staff attitudes leave something to be desired. I don't know if they've had a lot of people try to cheat them on groupons or something, maybe? But they have such tunnel vision about making even the smallest exception to the rules that it sets up an adversarial relationship with the customers and makes visiting their shop a harrowing experience. Come on, guys. We're both on the same side, here. Maybe you get some cheats in, but most of your customers are truly reasonable people just trying to do their best. Third time here! This time, I got a 14 lb Prime Rib Roast for Thanksgiving dinner. The service (day before Thanksgiving Day and was packed) was awesome, friendly and efficient. Just got back from here. Bought venison kabobs, lamb cutlets, and cajun sausages. So this is a review of the service and what we ate. Both the kabobs and cutlet were fresh. The service seem hurried, but very courteous. Yes, there is a sign outside for groupon users to be respectful. We went in with a groupon too, but they were still courteous. I paid $13 for the groupon worth $26. Our total for a pound and half of lamb cutlets, a pound of cajun sausages and 2 large venison kabobs (easily weighing more than a pound) was $35. So I paid $23 for $35 worth of stuff. We're definitely going here again. It's a little pricey, but the meat is definitely fresh! Once you eat it, the frozen meat from a regular grocery store simply doesn't cut it :) The only downside was there is a $15 minimum on using a credit card, so make sure you take cash if you plan on buying meat/seafood that costs less than $15. read more

There were lots of customers, but I was served immediately. I was interested in a specialty cut of pork that was not displayed in the extensive showcase. The butcher custom cut a roast from a whole loin of ribs. The patron next to me mentioned that she was the daughter of the man who owned the business 25 years ago, and she still shops there and highly recommended them. I love this place! The meat is so much better than the grocery store, especially the steaks, and they have grass fed beef. When I asked about the grass fed beef, they told me all of their meat is actually hormone free, a big deal for me since I have small children. They are also insanely helpful at telling you what type of cut will be best for a recipe and will even write out cooking instructions on the package for you! And the Groupon and other specials make it actually cheaper than the grocery store!! read more

I read the reviews with high hopes of liking this place; and unfortunately, my experience was pretty poor. I walked in and, as suggested reading the reviews, did not get ticket right away so I could browse. I then got a ticket and the kid who waited on me acted as if he was annoyed he had to work. I wanted two filet mignons and he again seemed annoyed, he had to cut some up. He showed them to me, and here I am at fault, but did not love them, but took them anyway. They were lousy. Chewy, fatty...just not what I would expect. I also bought a London broil, which looks nice and so no comment on that and reason I gave this place two stars vs. one. I think Wegmmans hands down has better filets than the ones I was sold yesterday. Will not return, Groupon or not. read more

FRESH CUT MEAT SHOULD NOT SPOIL IN 24 HOURS!!!!!! I should have known when the guy behind the counter put my items on top of raw chicken parts that were sitting on the counter, I was in for a bad experience. When you buy meat at your Grocery Store, it at least has a pull date so you know when you have to use it or freeze it. My most recent purchases at the Springfield Butcher were all on the verge of going bad. I had purchased 4 each of their sweet & hot italian sausages, some ground beef, and a flank steak. I asked when I should use or freeze it and the guy behind the counter said a couple days. We used the italian sausage that night and it tasted as if it was starting to spoil. The next morning I got the flank steak out to marinate it, and the blood in the bottom of the package was gray/green and the meat had definitely spoiled, you could tell by the smell! Luckily I put the ground beef in the freezer immediately, but I have been afraid to use it! I called the Springfield Butcher and told them about the spoiled flank stake and they acted like it was my fault and I was told there are no refunds! I will definitely not return and will rip up my two remaining Group-ons. BTW, everything the other posters have said about rude staff is true and they do use their bare hands to handle the meat, credit cards, cash, etc. and they definitely do not wash their hands between customers. If you want the freshest, best meat you can get, this is the place. Customer service is great! I use the groupons all the time and have never had a problem. I've tried the grass fed rib eye and it was the best cut I've ever tasted; so tender and yummy. Almost like butter in my mouth. The country cut bacon is thick cut and if your a real bacon lover it's a must have. The crab cakes are spectacular. Lastly, I recently bought the chicken cordon bleu and the stuffed chicken breast. I am sure it will be a home run too. Buying meats from a butcher was a new experience for me. Meat was great, but I watched them scoop up ground beef with their hands, wrap it, then touch the cash register and take someone's money and then turn around and do the same thing for the next customer. My wife and I have purchased from Springfield Butcher numerous times using groupons. They are pricey and the counter staff don't wear foodservice gloves when handling the meat so the groupon has always been a must. But after tonight even the groupon will not be an incentive. Their customer service is nil, especially at the management level. After my wife made our purchase she tried to make a second purchase for our daughter who has her own groupon account and her own condo. She had tried to use it the day before (it expires today) but couldn't make it by the time they closed so she asked us to do it for her. When the staff member refused to let us make a second purchase unless we spent $100 we asked to see the manager. We only have one rule -- one coupon per customer, the manager said, and it's clearly printed on the groupon. He was adamant and wouldn't listen to us. Even though our daughter doesn't live with us, had purchased the groupon through her own account, and it was the last day it could be used he could not be swayed -- you are all family, he said, one coupon only, and you had eight weeks to use it! A reviewer down the page refers to a similar incident but in that case the dual purchase was allowed (one rule always -- yeah, right!). I told him that if I had realized there would be a problem I would have made the purchase with the groupon. And his answer: we frown on that! I should have mentioned that the very first time we used a groupon both my wife and I made purchases. It was quite obvious we were together! I guess it depends on the day you are there and who is working! Personally, I won't give it another thought -- except when I tell friends of our experience. If you can't listen to reason you won't get our money again. We're happy to go elsewhere. read more

I visit the Springfield Butcher shop several times. However, the last time I was there (July 2, 2013) I notice the staff do not wear gloves and they pick up your meat with bear hands and handle currency with the same hands. currency is one of the filthiest things to be handling. You should not handle currency, chicken, beef, and pork all with your bear hands and don't wash in between transactions. read more

I have been here before and their beef is always good. I went to buy some ground chuck tonight and this girl was mopping the floor when I came in. She asked me if she can help me and I told her I want 3lbs. of the ground chuck. She did not have any gloves on and she started using her hands to put the ground beef on the container and she keep on touching the beef with her hands and by this time I felt like I didn't want the beef anymore. There were people in there and I didn't want to embarrass her by asking if her hands are clean but they should really use gloves if they are touching the meat. I've shopped Springfield Butcher 3 times thus far after buying the last 2 Groupon promotions. Iv;e never had any problems, and found the staff to be quite helpful and accommodating. I'm an extremely picky eater, when it comes to chicken, i only eat breast meat, and when bought from the supermarket, I meticulously remove all fat/ membranes/ other weird pieces that surround the meat and cube them. That is now in the past! I ordered whole chicken breasts and they quickly cut them up to my specifications and offered suggestions regarding keeping the tenderloins which could be utilized for another meal. This saves me a great deal of time now. Additionally, I love going here for the ground beef, it's great AND I don't know if this is psychosomatic or what, but my kids tell me that my beef dishes taste better with their meats vice the store meat, funny thing is, they might be right. I will continue going here Groupon or not, which says a lot considering it's a 30 min drive, but well worth it. read more

I've shopped at the Springfield Butcher for several years and their quality is typically very good. A repeating problem is they do not wash their hands/put on plastic gloves when picking out your selection from the display. I've witnessed them taking cash and giving change back. They then go directly to the ground meat and use their bare hands to get your order. I ask every time I go there for them to put gloves on but it should be standard practice. read more

I have always had a wonderful experience at the Springfield Butchers and am surprised by some of the other comments. Having grown up in New york where butchers were plentiful.......I am grateful there are butchers around. I do not know where the meat at the other stores come from, nor to I feel a personal connection like we do to our "family butcher" Mike. He and his staff go out of their way to assist us and also serve the community.....not just in selling meat but by supporting many local fundraising efforts and community functions.....hoe often do the "big box stores" help out their local town? It is tough for any business to survive in this economic climate and I will continue to support the Springfield Butcher and other local "mom and pop businesses. This Butcher store I believe was started many years ago by Mikes father, and I think it is great that his son is carrying on the tradition!! read more

I used the groupons a few times. The last two visits kind of freaked me out. They handle the meat w/o gloves. The butcher was cutting meat, wiped his hands on his dirty apron, then got my meat selections. I have never seen them wash their hands before and after handling raw meat. read more

I have been a customer of Springfield Butcher for over 30 years, when they were located across Backlick Rd by Radio Shack. Were they "trendy" then? Are they a gourmet butcher shop with enough room to display all kinds of hard to find choices? No. Do they have a huge seafood selection? No. Do they bend over and give every customer the most friendly, helpful service imaginable? No? But I always get good quality meat that is generally better that the grocery stores. They are willing to accommodate special requests. They have very good Wild Boar sausages, dry aged Prime cuts of beef, and they are a family run local business. As far as people getting upset about gloves not always being worn, and possible sanitary issues, give me a king sized break. One of the biggest problems in this country today is the obsession with killing germs on every surface and completely isolating yourself from "cooties". Man can build up a strong immune system when it is not pampered. The people who live like this would have nervous breakdowns if they went to many foreign countries and saw how food is handled. Why do you think Westerners get so sick when they travel? Why are there so many new super bacteria? That said, I have never been bothered by how the food is handled and have never developed any kind of food related illness from anything purchased there. I bought the recent Groupon and have to agree with Eugene B's review. The employees are very nice and helpful. When the employee helping me started printing up a sticker for my purchase, a grouchy man who I can only assume is the owner appeared out of nowhere and barked at the employee: "HEY! Did you price that correctly?" And the startled employee said "Yes, 19.99, right?" And the owner said "I thought I saw you type in 17.99. Make sure you do it right!" And disappeared, but not without glaring at me. I swear, it was like I was shoplifting. I was so freaked out by Eugene B's review that I made sure to keep my Groupon out of sight until it was time to pay. So, not only is the owner surly toward Groupon holders, but toward regular innocent folk! By the way, I bought less than 2 lbs of salmon and it was $36 (of course I got $13 off because of the Groupon, but still, it was the most expensive salmon of my life). Eek! read more

Seriously don't do it, buy your meat products anywhere else but here! Worst customer service I have ever experienced. I placed an order for several hundred dollars of meat on one day, our debit card was withdrawn on the next for an agreed pick-up date the day after the money was withdrawn. I arrived a little early on the agreed pick-up date and we were told that the order was not ready. They could have called to make us aware that they did not have the order ready, but they did not. The salesman's remark was..."what do you want me to do" well I would have expected more like "please give me say 30 minutes and we will prepare the order." I don't care how busy you were you had all day to complete this order and have it ready for pick-up/delivery. After some thought since the contract was not fulfilled we decided to cancel the order. We were met again with an attitude and told they could not reimburse the debit card. I checked with our bank and they indicated that is not correct the amount can be debited back to a debit or credit card. The person also made another stupid remark "if you had paid in cash we could have reimbursed you". I ask, who carries several hundred in their wallet for anything these days? Then they offered to give us an in store credit. That is the last place I want credit, simply the worst experience. So, we went in to pick up the order a day later and the place was busy (granted), but they had no organization for dealing with the customers. They have numbers but few people have a number and one of the workers literally asks the customers what to do, and if anyone had a number. In the end they are constantly unprofessional, poorly managed and definitely don't care about you the customer. I'm sure they saw me enter the store, but did not try to take care of us immediately. Also, they asked if we had a cooler or if we wanted the order in bags. They quickly put the order in bags, but there was no weight of the meats made on each package thus we had no idea if we received the agreed total weight as agreed upon. No apologies, nothing! Just attitude. Save your money, aggravation and take your hard earned money and business someplace else. I guarantee you will be much happier. There are mixed reviews about this business and I strongly urge you to take your business someplace that deserves you and provides the service you deserve. I'm glad i'm not the only one that thought the sign they posted, which read "We'd like to thank our Groupon customers for respecting our small business" was extremely offensive. I was really curious to find out what the heck they meant by that! The man in front of me asked the girl helping him and she said that the Groupon customers are coming in and ONLY spending the $26 (the amount on the certificate) and they feel that is taking advantage of the Groupon deal. I couldn't believe it. Then she said "we know who they are" and i thought back a couple of weeks when i went there and used my first Groupon to buy a flank steak. It came out to $27 and some change and i thought "wow, that came out perfect" . Little did i know they thought i was taking advantage of the deal. so there i was again, planning to spend as close to $26 as i could. Jokingly i asked how much a Groupon customer should spend so as to not take advantage? I thought she would see how rediculous they were being but instead she said "about $40". Feeling kind of intimidated, i ordered some extra stuff that i really didn't want and paid my $40 and left. So now i'm going to buy another Groupon - -but this time i'm going to hold my head high and spend ONLY the amount of the deal if that's what i choose to do! read more

So, I have been there before to use a groupon and for the most part I had no problems. I guess things get different if you have an expired groupon. I know it still holds it's "paid value" until you want to use it. I went there after the expiration and was told I could use the "paid value" or I could spend $52 and get $26 off using this expired groupon, fine but I could not use it that day. I went there today and made a point of asking the man behind the counter if I was correct in what I had been told about spending $52 and using the expired groupon to get $26 off he said yes that's right. So I proceed to pick out what I wanted and then when I came to the check out I was told that " no groupons, etc. can be used until Saturday because it is a "holiday week" . I then said ok can I just use it for face value and was told I could not??? I reminded the man that I had expired groupons that had only a face value and was told I still could not use them?? Needless to say I was met with a blank stare so I said fine and walked out. I guess I'll just have to eat the $26 I spent for the groupon because I don't think "The Springfield Butcher" wants me to get my money back. If that's the way they want to run a business so be it.
