It really is as good of a primary health practice as you can get without having your own private doctor. Both of our daughters have been patients here from birth. They have a primary care physician assigned - Dr. Sexter - but they have at some point or another been seen by all of their physicians. Every one of them are great: kind, compassionate, attentive, and responsive. You will feel heard and they will address your concerns. Their knowledge and expertise is extraordinary. The office - staff and doctors - are also super responsive. If you have a pressing question, someone will get back to you that day. If it's an after hours emergency, there is always a doctor on call and they will respond within 30 minutes. The doctors hold daily office hours but it can be tricky to get a hold of them if they're experiencing a volume of calls. An extra perk I like is that they keep appointments available daily for those common but unplanned for illnesses, and they have a separate waiting room for sick vs not sick. It just runs so well you wonder why more doctors' offices don't do the same. Now of course, the one downside is they are out of network. It's not cheap. I think it's worth it if you can, but financially it can hurt if your kids have a lot of illnesses or shots in a limited period of time. They do at least submit the insurance forms for you, and that helps some. I wholeheartedly recommend this practice and all the doctors in it, and have a deep appreciation for how Dr. Sexter and Nurse Jennifer have taken care of our girls. read more

So impressed once again with Dr Long after the birth of my second son. This review is so long overdue ! She has been my 2 year olds doctor for the past 2 years and we are continually impressed. The office is fantastic , clean , inviting , separate infant space. The front desk staff always try to accommodate you same day and we've never had an issue getting an appointment. Dr Long is caring , warm , and so knowledgeable. She works with us to troubleshoot issues when/if they come up and is readily available. Amazing pedigreed doctors. In house lab open 365 days a year. Poor rating is due to the staff & practice as a whole. This is a practice for rich white people. If you do not belong to this club then you will be treated with disrespect. I am not wealthy, But I have been coming to this practice for over 10 years and feel treated as a second class citizen by the front desk staff. Maybe they are rude to everyone? Billing office is worse - they take NO INSURANCE so this can be difficult if you don't have deep pockets. They have a huffy attitude as well. I have had an appointment taken from me & told to come back another day because I was 13 minutes late to our appointment- even though I called to say I was running late & the front desk said, "ok we will see you when you get here" only to be told when I arrived that the Dr took her next appointment & I will need to come back another day..... Ain't that something? Again, the doctors here are very good. It's why I have been bringing my child here for over 10 years- it's the snobby, elitist attitude that I don't care for. My kids have been seen by Dr. Warfield and Dr. Sexter for over 15 years. The office is awesome! When you first walk through the doors, you are greeted with a smile from the front desk receptionists. The Doctors are very professional, and they are able to communicate effectively to adolescents and teenagers. They have always provided great care and addressed any medical issues that my children have had in the past. These two docs leave no stone unturned. The nurses are also very nice and knowledgeable. Whenever I call with questions, they give me excellent answers, and if they are unsure of the answer, they contact the doctor and I always receive a call back from them soonest. This is a great practice and I hope that my children take their children there for care in the future. read more

Dr. Warfield has been our kids doctor for about 10 years. We love going to see him! The office is bright, clean & organized. They even have separate waiting rooms for the "healthy" and "sick". Dr. Warfield's bedside manner with our boys is what really sets him apart. He always asks about the usual health questions but he also dives into diet, activity, video games, career aspirations and more. He listens & responds thoughtfully. Really unique experience. I am patient of pediatrician Caroline Van Vleck as well as a teenager who is both in therapy and has a nutritionist. Yesterday, I went for my annual doctor's appointment. When doctor Van Vleck came in to my room at the doctor's office, we immediately started chatting as normal about events in my life that happened in the past year and this summer. We quickly got to the subject of me having been in therapy for over a year, and Van Vleck was insistent on wanting to know what my diagnosis was, or in other words "why" I needed therapy for so long, suggesting that in order to be in therapy a person needs to have a huge, jaw dropping problem. Van Vleck gave me a list of things she guessed might have been my reasons for attending therapy, which were all things she seemed to deem appropriate conditions to be in therapy for, for example, anxiety, depression, stress etc., almost like those were the viable options and that therapy wasn't something everyone in any state could potentially benefit from. In our entire, brief conversation, I kept feeling that Van Vleck was constantly trying to search for and ask what exactly is wrong with me that has me having to be in therapy for roughly a year and a half; she wasn't approaching me with the idea that people can turn to therapy for completely different, nuanced reasons, all of which are valid, and it overwhelmingly felt as if she was trying to categorize my reasons for entering and staying in therapy for convenience instead of actually trying to understand my own individual need for therapy. Van Vleck seemed to be incredibly observant of the fact that I had been in therapy for some time as a sign I still am not totally "recovered" or "fixed." I don't go to therapy to feel fixed because I'm not broken. I go to therapy because it helps me feel like I have a reserved place to put and work through all of the stresses and anxieties or general day to day difficulties somewhere. I am able to have a safe space to be vulnerable and honest about my emotions and confront them when I feel ready. Next we talked about my nutrition, and how I got the guidance of a nutritionist for the past six months during the brink of quarantine. I discussed my own intentions and reasons for getting a nutritionist as a way for me to focus on my health and learn how to understand and fuel my body. One of the first questions asked by Van Vleck was, "how much weight have you lost?" which, as a person who has had historic troubles with food, was triggering. I then was told that my nutritionist should be more restrictive of my diet, and that I should consider having her calorie count my meals. It seemed to me that Van Vleck was strongly tying together health and weight loss as almost equivalent, which totally disregards the idea that it's very possible to lose weight by engaging in harmful behaviors. In fact, my conversation with her on nutrition, triggered me more and was more harmful to me than helpful because it was so centered around weight loss and less focused on actual healthy habits. These were a few of the many events that occurred during my doctors appointment yesterday. I know that I'm extremely fortunate to be getting aid in so many facets of my life (nutritionist, therapist), and that I'm privileged enough to be able to afford such treatments, which in reality should not be so economically not inclusive. I of course don't expect all or most people to know about the benefits of therapy and how therapy can be helpful for all people or the types of language that could potentially be triggering to people who have struggles with food. But I do expect a person who has a job that involves interacting with and getting to know people, kids, and teenagers and their yearly experiences, to approach patients in sensitive ways, to be aware, and to constantly make a deep effort to understand and treat people with care, concern, and consideration, none of which were traits I felt were present during our meet. read more

We switched to Spring Valley Pediatrics after our old pediatrician in NW DC didn't have the necessary vaccinations for our kids, couldn't fit us in timely and made us wait forever. Good riddance to them. Spring Valley Pediatrics is amazing. We get seen quickly, we have seen many of the doctors and they are all wonderful and caring and take time to talk with you. They call us back quickly on holidays when there is an issue. So glad we switched. Most importantly, our kids love their doctors. I could not recommend them highly enough! read more

My daughters (and I) adore Dr. Long! She is so warm, positive, and reassuring - and as an adult observer, I can tell she is also whip-smart. I'm thrilled my girls have her as a role model! As far as the overall practice, Spring Valley is top of the line. They are incredibly accessible and responsive (they're literally open every day of the year). I find the morning call-in hour particularly helpful for when I just have a basic question and I'm not sure whether it warrants a full-on doctor's visit. read more

Dr. Long is wonderful and smart. She treated my son for an ear infection and calmed him quickly. She was helpful with explaining the medication and need for follow up. She is never annoyed with multiple questions from a new mother and the staff is so friendly. Calla, Erika and Jennifer RN are wonderful. This pediatrician practice doesn't take insurance, so you pay out-of- pocket charges for the convenience of not having to wait for appointments, a few hundred dollars per visit. They are good about showing up at the hospital if your wife is giving birth. Although the pediatricians are good, the staff is hit and miss (more miss) so that is the worst part of going to this office. We have seen multiple pediatricians there and like them, but this is not a great practice, mainly because of the staff issues. If you have a good pediatrician, I would say don't bother with this practice. As for specifics, if you go here, try to deal with the Asian receptionist, she is nice and professional; in contrast, the Hispanic receptionist is rude and maybe has been there too long because it seems like she does not want to be there any longer. As for the doctors, we used to see Dr. Peter Warfield. He is a nice young doctor and seems good. We stopped seeing him because his nurse is not good--is not diligent and is unpleasant. Because of her alone, we have switched doctors in the practice and are searching for another practice. read more

As a physician and owner of a medical practice, I can say without reservation that I highly recommend Spring Valley Pediatrics. I am definitely hypercritical of the care delivered by other providers, particularly when it comes to my daughter, as well as with the administrative support within an office. I can honestly say that I've no complaints when it comes to SVP. My daughter sees Dr. Long and my wife and I trust her completely. She has been nothing but superb in the care of our child, ushering us through some scary times, and we feel blessed to have her as our pediatrician! read more

Our experience here was perhaps unusual (we are not prior clients of the practice); nonetheless it was excellent. We arrived unannounced on their doorstep immediately after an accident across the street, walking in with a crying toddler with a heavily bleeding head. The staff moved into action instantaneously, finding us a nurse and doctor who carefully and thoroughly examined him, and gave sound counsel for next steps. Drs. Warfield and Sexter gave us attentive care and I wouldn't hesitate to bring my children here if we didn't already have a primary pediatrician. Both of my children (son and daughter) go to this practice and see Dr. Van Vleck primarily. I cannot describe how fantastic this practice is. Dr. Van Vleck is thorough, professional and personable. She runs down any problems until she is clear on the cause. Her breadth of knowledge and desire to get to an answer is incredible. She was able to transition her relationship with my kids as they grew to adulthood. They trust her and look to her as their expert. This is truly special - for a doctor to be able to not only care for them as infants and young children, but to then also be their trusted physician as they change through puberty to adulthood. They both know that it will be a tall order to find a primary physician who is half as good as her. Additionally, when needed, they also saw other physicians in the practice -- each one is as fabulous. Their staff is incredibly helpful. The nurses are so responsive and reliable -- so helpful. They have a lab in-house and do all testing locally. They have weekend sick hours. We have been clients for 22 years and we are thankful for these physicians! read more

This is an absolutely wonderful practice and all of the doctors are really good. My first daughter was a preemie (born 2 months early) and it was very comforting to have her in the hands of Dr. McDowell. My youngest daughter is now there as well and we've received nothing but the very best care for the past 7 years. The only reason I put four stars instead of five is because of the fact that the office does not accept insurance so the out-of-pocket expenses can add up. That said, I know that it is exactly because they do not take insurance that they are able to provide such excellent and focused care. read more

I grew up in the area and am back visiting my family for the Thanksgiving holiday. One of my children has been battling a nasty cold or some variety and has been having worsening symptoms since we got here. After looking around for pediatric urgent care, something we have at our disposal in the area that we live, I realized that it was not a model that seems to exist in this area so started looking for pediatricians that would see us on Thanksgiving day :-/. After looking on line, I came across Spring Valley Pediatrics, called them, and had an appointment within 2 hrs. The receptionist whom I spoke to was very nice and very up front that they don't take insurance so it would be out of pocket (which an urgent care visit or ER visit would be most likely anyway). When I went to hang up the phone, the number actually registered in my phone book as my own pediatrician's office that I had gone to as a child! I hung up and told my mom that I had inadvertently called our old pediatricians office and I was taking my own daughter there. We had the good fortune of seeing Dr. Sexter (who had the bad fortune of being there on Thanksgiving Day!) She was incredibly kind and great with my daughter who can be quite spirited sometimes. Not only did she see us, but she wrote her a prescription for what seems to be croup and had the ladies at the desk call the prescription to the pharmacy across the street so that we would have it before they closed for Thanksgiving! Although my own pediatricians are no longer in practice, this pediatrics practice is fantastic - always has been as far as I am concerned as a former patient there for 20 years, and now having my own daughter there some 20 years later.
