As I mentioned in my original review it was truly a shocking moment to me that I refused to believe had happened considering how long I have been a patient of NWNP. Northwest Nurse Practitioner Associates to me represented everything that a family practice should embody and that is now missing in the health care system : empathy, compassion, knowledge, detailed-oriented, patience, confidence, trust, passion. I found all of the above qualities visiting Erin every years for the past 7 years and that last encounter (over the phone) with the manager was the complete opposite of what I was accustomed to hence my disbelief. I have the utmost respect for her and what she has built over the years and my decision to update my review is solely based on those 7 years. I do not believe that one incident should erase the consistent positive interactions and great care I have received from NWNP over the years. I want to believe that there was a miscommunication between me and the manager and it was not his intend to make me feel unheard. I was a patient of Erin's practice for several years sold on the idea of nurse practitioners spending more time listening and open to alternative treatments. And that was true during that time. But something changed significantly as she transitioned to a sort of direct primary care practice and functional medicine practice. The practice seemed more impersonal. For example she tried to direct me away from monitoring my liver scores when I started taking statins. Although she had previously had the position that medications always have risks in promoting alternative medicine considerations and I had told her of my brother's death from non alcoholic cirrhosis due unmonitored prescription of cholesterol medication she tried to talk me out of the monitoring. At one point I had told her I didn't want to die from cirrhosis her reply was that there were worse ways to die. read more

Although it was several years ago, I still can't get over how rude the office staff was to me. I was 15 minutes late and still recovering from knee surgery and it was obvious I was on a cane and yet I was treated like I had just broken the law. I said I was willing to wait but that was not an option. Needless to say I never went back to that place again. I ask for the nurse practitioner to contact me but I never received a call or any further communication from this office. read more

Erin came into my life when I was at a really low point and could not get an appointment to see my own physician. Not only is she extremely talented when it comes to medicine/health she is also lovely, personable, straight-forward, and sincere. I finally signed up to make her my "primary" even though, technically, she is not a doctor. WHATEVER. If you really need a specialist she will send you to one. I don't have insurance so getting any treatment is scary. I always need to know the cost up front. NWNP does this so you really feel they aren't pulling any punches. Cannot say this for insurance companies. Erin remembers that my money is tight so she only tests me for the necessities. Because of this I trust her. If she tells me to do something I do it b/c I know she isn't just trying to make a buck. She also has guided me to places where I can obtain reduced costs on tests she doesn't perform. As for the tests she runs, you pay, basically, what it costs her for the tests. A pap is something like $50! Maybe? Can't really remember but it was something that made even me think, "Oh, hey, I can swing that!" I think I got all my testing and a really thorough exam for under $300. My dog's last exam was $600. Too bad she doesn't take pooches cause I'd bring him! She is wonderful. No reservations. If you see my other posts you can tell I do enjoy the occasional complaint. I have none here. read more

I really like the concept of Northwest Nurse Practitioners. I miss my primary care practice of NPs in California and was happy to find a similar model here in DC. I initially visited for urgent care and they were very thorough and helpful. They require you to get a physical and use them as a primary provider if you want to visit more than once. Since my insurance (CareFirst BCBS PPO) only covers a small portion of the cost, these visits were expensive when I needed to see them regularly. However, I would recommend them for urgent, non-gynecological health care. While I have had several frustrating interactions with Greg, the receptionist, it is generally fairly easy to get a same-day appointment. I also found Erin, the N.P. to be professional and caring. My major complaint about the health care provided is around their treatment of my weight. I repeatedly asked Erin and the other N.P. not to discuss weight loss with me, and they ignored my request at every exam even though it was irrelevant to any health conditions I was discussing. This, coupled with the power trippy receptionist has made me consider leaving their practice. read more

Hands down THE BEST. I've been searching for healthcare like this for 12 years. Glad I finally found it. Just so you know, I don't write reviews. This is my first review I ever wrote because it is so worthy of reviewing. Where do I begin? The front desk was very kind, considerate, and helpful. They never put me on hold for too long (I called a few times before making an appointment) and usually answered all of my questions without putting me on hold. I was able to get an appointment much sooner than I anticipated: two days after I called. When I walked in, they greeted me with a smile and kindly explained the paperwork I needed to fill out. The waiting room is small and friendly (it wasn't outdated, depressing, oddly smelling or hospital-feeling). Also- I wasn't waiting long. After I was finished with the paperwork, Erin came out to greet me. She went through all of my history and encouraged/welcomed any questions I had. She answered every question I came up with and I never, even for a second, felt rushed. She also was comfortable sharing the costs of all of the labs and vaccinations up front (if I wanted them) so that no financial questions caused me anxiety during the exam. During the exam, she explained what she was going to do before she did it, and was fine talking to you about whatever you were in natural conversation about if you were still in a chatty mood. If you wanted to be quiet, that was okay too. She was not at all awkward or made me feel awkward (such as whistling or talking about the weather or other strange incidences that I've experienced with other doctors). Erin is competent, kind, and professional. She never left the door open while I was partially undressed, never rushed me, and did uncomfortable tests in an efficient and painless manner. She calls to tell you your lab results and does not believe in the 'no news is good news' policy. I'd recommend her to anyone. Now I'll never leave DC- cause I've finally found my primary doc. Erin's the best and I finally feel like I'm in hands that I can trust because she actually cares for me. If I only found her sooner... When you go to Peru, you need many vaccinations. You need yellow fever, Malaria pills, typhoid, hepatitis, tetanus, and maybe also flu. The prices for the yellow fever alone runs about $150. Needless to say, your vaccinations may end up costing the same as your plane ticket. After calling around to many, many, yellow fever certified clinics, I decided to go to NW Nurse Practitioners. Because they work directly with the customer, and not through insurance companies, the yellow fever vaccine was a whole $30 cheaper. I got all my shots for $275, which was a significant amount less than what I had anticipated. Not only that, but unlike other clinics, I did it all in one visit. Other clinics had me scheduled to come in Tuesday for the consultation, then back on Wednesday for the vaccine. This seemed highly inconvenient. (Although, to be fair, that was because of the yellow fever vaccine shortage. I'm not sure they would do the same thing if there were no shortage.) The receptionist at NW Nurse practitioners was/is extremely friendly, helpful, and soft-spoken. In fact, this was one of my deciding factors! She was so nice! The waiting time was minimal, and she brought the four of us yellow fever patients water and snacks while we waited for our consultations with the nurse. The nurse who administered the vaccines was extremely helpful, thorough, and friendly. Even if she assumed I knew it, she told me, and she gave me lots of information about the places in Peru I'd be travelling, including maps and disease information. You can also buy complete medical travel kits at the clinic, which is very convenient. It's easier than getting each item individually! I recommend NW Nurse Practicioners for anyone who needs travel vaccinations or information about travel medicine. read more

Erin Bagshaw is extremely competent and takes time with each patient. She's great with both urgent care and regular requests. The practice doesn't accept insurance, but their rates are low enough that when I submit the claim, most of it is paid. In the past six months, I've seen Erin for a physical, a rash, and a sore throat. For each of these, she was very thorough, answered questions, and exhibited the empathy you would expect from a close friend. I unequivocally recommend Erin. read more

I have been fortunate with Doctors over the years, however when I went to get my vaccinations at the Northwest Nurse Practioners Associates I realized what I was missing - Medical care from a professional: * with years of experience in both domestic and international based medicine. * who spends time to dig deep into what your health concerns are, and listens to you. * who explains test results and their indications. *who treats you with respect and consideration * who does not rush you or make you feel like a number * who looks you in the eye, and knows who you are. * who can give you an appointment quickly, not make you wait weeks or months. * who gives you practical advise to improve your health care customized to your needs and your reality. I can go on and on, bottom line - this is a great place. The staff is great as well and is always kind and helpful. I also have to endorse their travel bag - it is smart, well made, can be put in your carry on, waterproof, and frankly a god send when you get sick overseas. Outstanding. I've been with NWNP since 2008, and it continues to be the best medical experience I've had. Erin treats me as a real human. I get her for the entire hour, on time; she never double-books. She listens well and explains everything. She always calls personally with my an results. Even though she doesn't accept insurance, Blue Cross reimburses me 75%. Her prices are so low that it ends up being more affordable than staying in-network for me. Erin emphasizes preventative measures over medication, which works well for me. The bottom line on this is that I have a healthier lifestyle, and have remained healthier, as a result of going to NWNP. It's a much easier, less stressful, and more effective relationship than I've had with any other medical professional. Erin's going to be my primary physician forever if possible! read more

My experience at NNPA has been absolutely stellar in every aspect. The quality of care provided is of the highest degree - and I would know having worked in the field of medicine and visited numerous practices around the world. The administrative staff is polite and organized, and Erin is focused, courteous, and thorough with each patient. She took a lot of time with me as a new patient to make sure we covered all the bases. I have total faith in her as a medical provider. There is a common misconception that NPs are not as qualified as DRs. The truth is that they receive the same training and have all the same rights as DRs. And, you will never meet a Dr that will call each patient individually with their lab results. Not to mention care at NNPA is affordable (a complete physical is only $125). if i had found NWNPA on yelp i'd probably be very suspicious. all 5-star reviews? yeah, uh-huh, ok. "some've gotta be fakes," i'd think. having been to NWNPA? well, here i am wrting a 5-star review, and i can certainly understand why everyone else has too: -great customer service both on the phone and in person (both receptionists are very helpful and as nice as can be) -wonderful, sensitive, patient, calming bedside manner -knowledgeable, professional and thorough nurse -no double booking. NONE. your appointment is THE appointment of the hour. -thorough explanations of everything before, during and after exams -reasonable rates* & clear, concise paperwork -genuine concern and care, beyond just mechanical medical stuff...interest in/focused on the whole body/person, not just specific condition or issue -clean and comfortable space -easy to get/book appointments on short notice -convenient location (right across the street from the zoo, red line woodley park-zoo stop on the metro) *while it may be off-putting for some (myself included), they do not take/process insurance for payment. you have to pay all fees (other than labs - they will submit your insurance to the lab for you if you need any tests) up front and submit to your insurace on your own. i almost didn't go b/c of this, but ironically, my first visit to NWNPA was b/c of an urgent care need and get this - i couldn't get same-week appointments with ANY of the providers that do take my insurance. out of pain, desperation and frustration i started googling all kinds of things to try and find some medical assistance w/o having to go to the emergency room and, voilà!!, there was erin and NWNPA. talk about your silver lining. my experience with NWNPA was so good that i'm considering making erin my PCP (um, PCN?), even with the payment process inconvenience. it'll depend on how the new health insurance plan at work all shakes out in a few months, but either way, i'm happy to know there's a place i can go for basic and/or urgent care and get GREAT service. NWNPA does general/primary care as well as travel medicine and well-woman (general GYN) care. a one-stop-shop for healthcare as good as or [in my experience] better than a lot of basic docs? no-brainer. i'd be more than comfortable going to NWNPA for routine care. the only difference i saw b/w NWNPA and doc visits i've had is that NWNPA was better. and like docs, if i need a specialist, they'll refer me to one. so, again, no brainer. i highly, highly recommend erin & NWNPA. read more

I agree that this travel clinic was particularly good. I was going to Uganda, and had already read up and had many vaccinations before when going to Ghana. The receptionist was incredibly friendly and full of information. The office is located very oddly in an apartment building, and it's sort of freaky going in there. That being said, the NP was incredibly informative and gave me all the information I needed to know. The receptionist explained exactly how I could submit the bill to the insurance. The vaccinations were not significantly less than elsewhere - about 10-20 dollars less, and the fee (50 dollars) for seeing the NP was higher than others I went to before (30). I did like the service, the doctor and the receptionist, however, and would highly recommend anybody come here. read more

I went here for an urgent care visit and it was fantastic and I loved Erin. I took off a star because they don't take Medicaid--I didn't have insurance when it went the first time, and I was really hoping that when I got Medicaid I would be able to go back, but they only take Medicare. This sucks, because I would LOVE to make Erin my primary--but it is not worth the risk that I would end up having to pay a lot more than I can afford. read more

Update: Be mindful if you have Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO insurance. I've decided the caps were a bit too extreme. Good. That's out of the way. I don't want to punish this office or Dr. Bagshaw's perfect scores for the bureaucratic nightmare of being reimbursed for this appointment. Dr. Bagshaw provided excellent care, and the Front Office was courteous and helpful. The office itself is a suite in what is probably an old apartment building (maybe a residence hall?), which threw me off a bit when I walked in. The elevator was a little frightening, so I recommend finding the stairs if you can. The bad side: Filing the claim form. This office only participates with Medicare and will give you a claim form for every other insurance. I can't speak for other providers, but I absolutely do NOT recommend going here if you have Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO insurance. They've incorrectly filed my claim form twice now (waiting for it to work the third time), and it's looking increasingly like I will have to shoulder the $130 for an office visit with no help from them. As a very poor early 20-something, $130 is a fortune for an appointment that would typically cost me $15. If you choose to go anyway, try to get it confirmed with BCBS beyond a shadow of a doubt that they will reimburse before you hand over your credit card. Other than that, great office. I highly recommend it if you have Medicare. Update: Unfortunately, it is what it is, and BCBS PPO will not help with the cost of my visit. The office, for their part, has been wonderfully helpful throughout this process, particularly Rosalyn (sp?), and I wish I could stay with them. read more

I am constantly amazed by this practice. I have been seeing Erin for 3 years; she has been my primary care provider in every way-- for physicals, your standard virus/flus, health scares, travel meds and health concerns. After my last visit, I decided to actually sign up for yelp in order to recommend her to others. In a city that is always in a hurry she stands out as someone who is calm, non-judgmental and thoughtful. She is extremely thorough and takes questions/concerns very seriously. She has a wonderful bedside manner and is incredibly bright-- and engaged. Erin is a Nurse Practicioner but in DC that means that she can write prescriptions (she also has visiting hours at Sibley). Erin also is on call for established patients and returns calls quickly and with care. One of the things I most admire is that her prices are very affordable for those with little or no insurance. If you do not have insurance, I really can not imagine that you can find anyone else for her price with her capabilties. It's just not possible. Although she doesn't accept insurance, you may file on your own (and usually I do not pay more than a co-pay). read more

As others have noted, Erin Bagshaw is the most competent, compassionate, and genuine health professional I have ever come across. No problem is too big or too small - she is always thorough and considerate which is why I believe her approach is so effective. Even though I have health insurance, I choose to see Erin and incur the extra cost because I don't think I'll find the same quality of service anywhere else. I've had an outstanding experience over the past 5 years with Northwest Nurse Practicioners - NP Erin Bagshaw is as professional and thorough as they come, incredibly sharp with a skill for detail. Beyond her medical competency, she's compassionate. She always holds herself and her practice to the highest standards. I've recommended her to all of my friends in DC, and several now have her as their primary care provider, like I do. When I've needed referrals to specialists she's always sent me to other high quality providers. Her office staff is wonderful, very caring and accommodating. The best things about my experience have been: - Long, thorough time the NP spends with me answering all of my questions - Kind, friendly staff who always welcome me - Easy-to-schedule appointments The only downsides are: Submitting the bills to insurance to get reimbursed, and I wish it was downtown so I could walk there. The absolute best. I go to Erin for all of my primary care needs. My insurance doesn't cover any of my visits to her, but she is such a good NP that I pay out of pocket and would never dream of going anywhere else. Some of the things that I love about this practice: 1.She focuses on overall health and well-being, all aspects of your life. 2. She take the time to explain conditions, current best practices, and prescriptions. 3. She doesn't double book!!! If you have the 9:30 appointment, there is NO ONE else scheduled at 9:30. Ever. There's never anyone else in the waiting room bz there aren't a bunch of patients given the same appointment time. You own the time she schedules your for, and she doesn't try to rush you out. 4. She doesn't condescend or lecture. 5. Her bedside manner is exceptional, yet very professional as well. 6. The office is clean and calming. 7. Her receptionist is a delight. I have been seeing Erin for over 6 years now. Ever since I came to USA. My close friend recommended her and even though I have been with and without the insurance over the time - I would still go to her no matter the cost. Erin has been taking a very good care of me and the most important thing is- I trust her. I dealt with a lot of doctors and medical staff during my twenties and I have become very sensitive and somewhat traumatized by all the experiences. Than I came to USA. I was so scared of future doctor visits - I knew nothing about health care system here. And as it showed - it is all so very different. Erin helped me understand better and she made it easy by giving me good advice and sending me to specialists that would provide an amazing care and still consider my financial situation. She not only listened carefully, she understood so much and than gave me the best possible feed back I could get. I know because I know myself and I know how analytical and curious I am. A true humane, empathetic and professional health care. I have been recommending NNPA to everyone I know and all of my friends that did end up going- only had good things to say. I found NWNP through Yelp, and I've had a great experience there as a patient for the past three years. I agree with a lot of what others said regarding Erin's thoroughness and genuine care. When I first came to the practice, I was stressed about a career change and actually cried during my initial visit. Then and throughout my entire time with the practice, Erin has shown so much compassion. I appreciate that following blood tests, she gives concrete, well-researched suggestions for how to improve any vitamin or other indicator that is low. I always felt that I could have an open conversation with her about my health, fitness, and well-being. I first started seeing Erin for primary care about two years ago, and she is by far better than any doctor, nurse, or otherwise I've ever visited. She is incredibly thorough, and really tries to get to the root of any health issues, rather than just treating symptoms. erin saved my life twice. once when i had sepsis and my hand was swelling up. she saw me right away in a couple of hours. i wasn't even a patient then. another time when i was hurt in florida and i could not wait to get back to dc so she could look at what happened-a nasty ankle wound. she immediately recognized my antibiotic was not working and changed it and the infection was gone shortly thereafter. read more

DO NOT GO HERE!! I met with the NP and she told me that she couldn't help me or advise me on anything and that I would be better off medically and financially going someplace else. After helping me with NOTHING AT ALL - telling me to leave and find better care elsewhere (all I needed was a general check up) she promised not to charge me. Then, I checked my credit card bill and she charged me anyway!! I called to try and talk to them about this and the receptionist wouldn't even let me speak to the NP - she just said the bill stands without explanation and wouldn't acknowledge that the NP did nothing for me and promised not to charge me! PLEASE AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAGUE. There are too many good high quality medical providers in the world - people who provide great medical care and also RUN THEIR BUSINESS FAIRLY, COMPETENTLY AND ETHICALLY to waste your time and money on people who steal from you and lie to you. read more

Erin Bagshaw and her staff, in particular Greg and Rosalyn, are the most professional, personable, knowledgeable and friendly folks it has been my pleasure to deal with in a long time. Erin is very well read in medical publications so that when something relative new comes up, she is informed about it. They care deeply about you as a person and as a patient. When tact is needed it is there, when a patient goes against medical advice, they are gentle in reminding one what is best for them medically. I just had a medical emergency and they fit me in on the same day. I have been a patient there for about eight years and have never once been disappointed in any one of them. They are a pleasure to deal with when one has a medical problem or any other time. They will never let you down. I can't imagine anyone complaining about anything having to do with this practice. This is the best healthcare experience I've ever had. I have been to this clinic on a number of occasions and every one has been an excellent experience. Erin is superb. She has very detailed knowledge about what she is doing, and it's clear that she works hard to keep herself informed. She has a great bedside manner and I've never had trouble getting an appointment on short notice. Also, I just read a post about how someone had frustrating experiences with the receptionist Greg. I have interacted with Greg many times and he was very professional and friendly on every occasion. Actually, he seems like a great guy. From the review it sounds like this was a person who did not appreciate her primary car provider pointing out that he or she had a medically significant weight problem. Well, if that's the case, then how do you blame a good primary care provider for being concerned about it? Regardless, let me just conclude by saying that I have a strong background in science and medical research, and Erin is a no-BS person who genuinely cares about the health of her patients.
