Spring Roll Kitchen is conveniently located beside Century Park, making it the perfect place to grab some dinner/takeout whenever cooking sounds like too big of a task. Compared to other Vietnamese restaurants I am used to, this one has a great atmosphere - it's clean, and the service is super friendly. While the food is a bit on the pricey side, you get generous portions. My mom and I each had a vermicelli bowl, with pork/chicken and spring rolls. The bowls were pretty standard, with the meat being a bit tough. The spring rolls redeems the meal, however. It definitely looked like it was made fresh, and was piping hot and wonderfully crispy. All in all, you're not getting anything special here, but the restaurant's great location and big portions will likely draw me in again. read more

Short story: Questionable cleanliness/care in the kitchen, fine tasting food, better prices can be found elsewhere, and servers that ignore you. Friday 9pm (1hr before close). Came in with husband for Bun vermicelli bowls. I ordered the tofu bowl because I'm vegetarian. It was good at the start but the server never visited us at all after because she was sitting down to eat with other people (the only other table besides ours). Halfway through I took a bite and there was a big chunk of meat! I set it to the side and waved down the server. All she said was "Oh... I'll tell them" before leaving for the kitchen. She never came back (at other restaurants, the server would at least apologize, offer to make a new bowl or offer a discount). I decided it would be ok to continue eating, thinking it was just 1 piece and a simple mistake. Turns out, there were more small pieces of meat as I to closer to the bottom. 1 chunk and several small pieces. It made me realize that I had probably ate quite a few pieces without knowing, and that the kitchen has a problem (cleanliness? Cross contamination?). I decided then, that I would not eat anymore. The server didn't come out at all, we waited a very long time and eventually put on our jackets and had to stand around at the counter before being noticed. I told her that I found meat and did not feel comfortable eating the rest. She consulted the kitchen then informed me that she could offer 50% off my dish. I made my case that there was a significant amount of meat in a dish that was clearly meant to be vegetarian, it was disgusting, and I didn't think it fair to pay for. The server argued that because I had eaten half of it, she could only offer 50%. Ok fine but I would never had eaten so much if I had known there was so much meat floating around in the bowl that I couldn't see. The chef came out and it felt like she was glaring at me. Loved it, ample parking, wheelchair accessible. We were greeted as soon as we sat down with menus. He got a steak and brisket soup and I went with a classic chicken noodle soup. Our meal arrived really fast and we also got a pot of jasmine tea. Everything was piping hot. The servings are huge and so hearty. I had thick tasty shredded chunks of chicken with chopped onion and parsley and it was so good. They also offer forks if chopsticks are too difficult to use. I used the washroom (which also has a wheelchair stall) and it was just as clean as the main dining area. Our server and (I think) the owner both came by once each to see how we liked our meal. Major downgrade here. When they first opened I loved how the place was clean, friendly, efficient. 2 years later and what happened??? "The restaurant skimp" syndrome. I was craving veggie spring rolls very badly, I can't eat meat anymore, so I figured I was in the neighborhood for lunch, why not? I walked in, nobody was there to greet me, after a few minutes a lady that was playing with her iphone at a nearby table asked me if I needed anything. I told her "table for 1". She says to go sit anywhere, which I did. Then another lady quickly came out with a menu and handed it to me. Boy was that menu in such bad shape, ratty and old, come on maybe time to reprint? Anyways I looked at the entire menu and there were almost no veggie dishes at all to my disappointment except for Green Onion cakes which I didn't really want. I asked the lady if I was missing the veggie page or is there a better selection I am not seeing? She told me that Vietnamese restaurants do not have veggie dishes due to their culture. Ok, that may be so, but I have been to a few Vietnamese restaurants in the past two years and all of them had veggies spring rolls at least and a few others, and there is a reason for this, because more people are going vegetarian so they understand the demand/supply basics. But I guess not this place. Secondly, I had my ipad with me hoping to check a few things on the web while I am having lunch and the lady said their wifi had been down for the last 2 weeks and she doesn't know when it will be fixed. Ok then..... In any case, since there was nothing for me to eat, I left disappointed and went to another Vietnamese restaurant which had all I wanted, made me wonder why I just didn't go there in the first place. But I always give a place a second chance and this one did not go well. The service was not friendly, staff should not be on iphones and customers should be greeted at the door. Later evening meal (8pm). Was almost attacked when we got in as the restaurant was not very busy. Was seated next to another couple (2feet away) and moved ourselves to another table so we weren't encroaching on them in an empty restaurant. Asked a couple questions about the menu but had a language barrier with the service staff. Appetizer came out quickly, but then 30 seconds later our meal came out as well. I really enjoyed the meal, but my wife didn't. (we had the same thing) but she found hers overlooked and not a warm as expected. Atmosphere was good, but where we were seated you get beamed with these small lights from the accents on the tables across from where we sat. Music played was really bad elevator music of 80's flair. I knew I would be heading down to Century Park today but I was starving when I arrived. I thought to myself, why don't I try out that Spring Roll Kitchen place I always see but never pop into? I thought it might be all gourmet spring rolls or something (I'm not sure why I thought that. Now that I think about it, it's a very silly idea for a restaurant.), but it turns out it's spring rolls, pho, vermicelli, etc. The space is incredible - light, open, high ceilings, huge floor to ceiling windows, and an amazing wall mural. They've got a great bamboo type centerpiece to finish off the look in the center of the restaurant. My chicken and spring roll vermicelli was pretty good. At first I thought it wasn't really worth the $11 (it was a bit light on the chicken - which I think might have actually been pork, the wrong order) but I actually couldn't finish the bowl, it was so huge. For $11, it was actually a good deal. The vermicelli was good, the chork (chicken/pork/mystery meat) was just OK, but the spring rolls were AMAZING. Totally made the meal. They were light, crispy, full of flavour, and had the perfect fillings to dough ratio. Plus, hot hot hot! I'll definitely be back, but probably only for spring rolls. read more

I had a meeting near Century Park this week, and decided to have supper here. The place is beautiful: large, spacious, reasonably clean, bright, and decorated. My bowl of steak and brisket pho was large, had a decent amount of meat, and the broth had a slight sweetness to it that I enjoy. The spring rolls were among the best I have ever had: large, crispy, and packed full of vegetables. Price-wise, it is a little higher than other such places by a couple of dollars. I would give this place a four but am only giving it three stars because the service left a bit to be desired. It took a while for me to get a menu after I sat down, and my server never once came back to check after meal was served. Still, if I am ever in the area again, I would come back here because the food was so good. read more

I've never eaten here, but I can speak about their customer service. IT SUCKS! While my wife was going into the nearby bank, I stepped inside and asked if I could use the washroom. The lady behind the counter asked, "Are you going to eat here?" To which I replied, "No." Then she said, "Sorry, washrooms are for paying customers only!" I replied with, "I guess I'm never eating here then," and promptly walked out. I understand this rule for busy places like Whyte Ave during popular bar hours and such, but this was at two in the afternoon and there were only two people in the entire restaurant! If this is how they treat random people walking in off the street then they have proven that they are not good enough for my hard earned money! Funny how the Starbucks across from them doesn't have such a rule. Maybe that's why they're so busy and this place is not! read more

We came here for dinner last night. The inside of the restaurant looks really nice, really fancy. I had two appetizers: fried shrimp and shrimp/pork egg rolls. The food was pretty good, just not anything to write home about. My husband said he enjoyed his food though. Our food was brought out quickly, but after that no came back to refill are water glasses or ask if our food was okay. This is honestly the worst Vietnamese restaurant I have been in I visited it two times to see if there will be a change in my experience but no it's still bad. First of all the customer service sucks and secondly they always forget about people's order because of how they just try to remember all the customers order instead of listing it down. I first visited this restaurant with my friends to try out something new. After ordering my friends all got their food already while I waited for about 10 minutes I thought ok probably something happened or my food is complicated to make but after waiting again for another 12 minutes the server passed by us to check on another table I asked him if my order is ready he simply said sorry (not even a sincere one) and said that they haven't made mine, like honestly you guys should use NOTEPADS!! when taking orders it helps avoid this kind of situation you know!! Again on my second visit the same issue happened but this time they forgot about my drink. If it weren't for me going to the front and telling them about it they wouldn't have given it to me. I got the special noodle pho, and the serving size was huge! Lots of flavour. The iced coffee was also fantastic! Loss of 1 star as the service wasn't fantastic. I've been here quite a few times in the past and never had any issues with the food. However, on my recent visit, I found a hair extracted inside a spring roll. I informed the waitress who took it off the bill but she did not offer any kind of apology or anything. Her response was "It happens." Very disappointed in the service and how they go about treating their customers. Prior to the hair incident, I had to go up to the front counter to ask for menus after sitting at the table for more than 5 minutes. The waitress also never came by once to check on us after the food came. I used to come here fairly regularly despite the bad service but will not be returning anymore after this incident. read more

I been here few times now, I know their owner is always in angry/ cranky mood (No idea why, but always!) but their Pho tasted great all the time so I decided to go there for dinner with friends few days ago. Ordered spicy Pho as usual, and noodle were very soggy and their broth wasn't tasted right. However, their customer service is even got WORST! Friend and I were requested new glass cups because it wasn't washed properly but, they ignored us for loooooong time until the end of our meal. This place is a little tricky to review because the food is really good, but the service is a bit of a disaster. I've been to this restaurant 3-4 times because it is conveniently located and the food doesn't disappoint, but each time the service is worse and worse! First, I'll talk about the food - I've had the spring roll vermicelli bowl, the beef ball and steak pho, the green onion cake, and the chicken vermicelli bowl. The green onion cake was one of the best I've ever had - crisp, yummy sauce options, perfectly cooked and flavoured. Their vermicelli bowls are generously served and plated well - spring rolls cooked very well! I like that each table has a whole platter of sauces to choose from, however the nozzles on some of the bottles are a little unkempt, and on two of my visits I've seen sauce spray out at all angles (read: Sriracha on canvas!). The service at this place is pretty ridiculous. Every single visit I've had, once the food has come the staff doesn't come back to the table. No water refills, no asking if we need anything else. No interest in customer satisfaction. One time I visited, I had to ask the owner to take my order (after waiting 20 minutes, I'm not impatient. There were only 3 other guests), and she sighed dramatically. When I asked for extra napkins, she gestured to the table next to mine, as if I should take the napkins off of the table. Every time I've gone I've always had to go up to the counter to ask to pay my bill, after waiting a large amount of time for someone to come to the table. On my most recent visit, when I arrived the owner was yelling about some customers not paying their bill before leaving. She was audibly yelling at someone in the kitchen (from the restaurant area) in front of everyone. When I asked if I could sit, she told me that the restaurant was only for paying customers (obviously?), and then mentioned to everyone very loudly that maybe she should take a deposit before taking people's orders. She locked one of the restaurant doors, and then sat down at a table and started watching videos on her phone. I would never eat somewhere without paying, but to be honest I can see how this would happen. On this visit, I waited over half an hour for my bill to come, and when I went up to pay she was behind the counter watching videos on her phone. If you can handle bad service, the food is great. Probably not worth the dramatics, though. I'm hoping to find a new Vietnamese place nearby! read more

My wide & I each had one of their "bowl" dishes, mine the "Five Colors" and my wife's the "Three Colors". The only thing palatable was the spring roll and the glass of water. The only flavor detectable in the meat was grease. We couldn't tell the chicken from the pork, both were like chewing greasy little bits of leather. The server did not once come back to check on how we were enjoying the meal. When I complained to the cashier about how disappointed we were, no apology or anything was offered. I eat here as often as I can! I love the freshness of Vietnamese and it's realatively close to my home so this is my favorite!! If you are new to vietnamese it's like the salad of chinese food - fresh and flavourful!! But not saucy or deep fried. LOVE IT and would recommend as one of the best Vietnamese in the city! It's very clean and the service is superb! You will not be disappointed! If you don't know how to order: Pho is soup pick the protein (with chicken, pork etc.) Vermicelli is noodles pick the protein (my FAVE is #40!) The last is Rice then pick the protein (#49) I mix it all together - the fresh veggies/salad, chicken and sauce some people eat it individually. SO GOOD!! read more

I really have zero clue why people don't like this place, I've eaten here many times and not once have I had any issues. My favourite is the #40, the grilled chicken with spring rolls. A good sized serving of vermicelli, lots of veggies, 2 spring rolls, and the sauce on the chicken is super good. The appys and pho are good too. I admit its not my first choice for pho, but if I've just hopped off the lrt and that's what Im feeling for I have no issues ordering it from here. Took my dad here and he got the salad rolls and the #50. He said the rice dish was not at all what he was expecting but he really liked it. Especially the fried egg, he thought it was weird at first but after eating the dish said it went perfectly with the meat and veg. And I'm not sure what the issues with service are either. They take your order in good time, and after they bring you your food they leave you to eat which personally I prefer. However you can see them pass by and check that everything is ok. I've had no issues with getting refills, or having plates taken away, or getting to-go containers. It's a nice addition to the area that's got a nice atmosphere, good food, and is kept very clean.
