Brand new vegan brunch spot right off canal st with the cutest interior and really interesting menu. Came in one morning during their soft open for an ube sandwich and hash brown+cheese sandwich (which they serve with illy coffee). Both were really good! The hash+cheese was so savory, and the ube was slightly sweet with a very generous spread of real ube. Illy coffee obviously can't be beat. Oat, almond, and soy milk are available. My friend got hawaiian burger combo (which they say is their bestseller), and he loved how much food was included in a very affordable price, also remarked that the sauce was amazing. I was surprised to find how reasonably priced and delicious everything was, they even had beyond meat burger which can easily can cost $15 at some locations, here it's only $10 and some change. I opted for something different than regular vegan junk. I had vegan bao, they had approximately 6 flavors and not a regular at any vegan places. I had the vegan ginger chicken and black oyster mushroom bao. They both were good with the spicy mayo...the only issue I had was the bao kept getting stuck to the parchment paper. I also had portobello mushroom burger with avocado. It was so simple and so flavorful and delicious was $7.75 and came with a side of fries. Overall go support this little vegan cafe. I ordered their Hawaiian Vegan Burger (Breaded Vegan Chicken, Lettuce, Tomato, Fresh Pineapple, Agave Mustard Sauce) for $6.95. I tried a bit of their fries and those are pretty typical, but their combo meal also contains a herbal tea which (I haven't tried personally yet) but sounds delicious. Honestly, if nobody had told me that it was a vegan chicken burger, I probably wouldn't have been able to tell instantaneously though the texture is definitely a bit different, but still freaking great. I highly recommend going to try even if you are not a vegan/vegetarian like me. By the way, they also sell a burger with the Beyond Meat patty. However, since I have not had a chance to try many vegan foods, I ordered something I was more familiar with, which was tofu and I ordered the braised tofu bento box. The braised tofu skin bento box was really delicious and I had lots of tofu for the meal as one of the sides is a curry tofu. The soup that came with the bento box was interesting as it was a both savory and had a bit of a spicy kick to it. I didn't know about this place and am generally wary of places that market themselves as "vegan cafe's", but my friend is Vegan and we came here to accommodate. Spring Cafe is newly open and tucked away next to the N train station on Centre Street. Despite its small size, it had a healthy attendance of patrons coming in and out of its doors, mostly for takeout, and never to the point of overcrowding. The menu offers all foods aligned with a vegan-based diet, and some meat-substitutes (like the vegan chicken salad, which my friend had). The burgers looked amazing, but I wasn't very hungry, so to not make it awkward, I got two mushroom baos/buns. My friend was a big fan of their healthy green salad - the mangoes and pumpkin seeds looked particularly good, but the salad as a whole was super fresh. The buns came wrapped individually and then packaged together in a box. While it wasn't the most photogenic in the world, the flavour packed a punch not intimated by its appearance. Wow. So so good, and so so tasty. You definitely get that umame flavour and richness from the sauce they use. Overall, it was such a pleasant bun experience. I think it could have used some scallion, but that's just me. Overall, I enjoyed the mushroom bao I tried, and I would come back to try the other ones. I ordered 2 buns which came out to $6 after tax. I got the ginger vegan chicken and black pepper mushroom. The buns were very tasty- the mushrooms were very well seasoned and had a nice sauce which soaked into the white fluffy buns. The ginger vegan chicken was interesting- it tasted just like a Chinese chicken dish that comes with a similar ginger scallion sauce. The ginger was a tad strong but overall I liked it. I've walked by this place tons of times, since it's literally right next to the Canal Street subway station, and I've been meaning to try it at some point. (Un)luckily for me, my regular train wasn't running today, so I finally decided to pop in for a quick takeout dinner. Everything on the menu is vegan, so that's great for people who can't eat meat or choose not to eat meat for health reasons. Personally, I do eat meat, but it's not like I can't live without meat everyday, so having a more healthy option available for dinner is always good. It's just unfortunate that many vegan places are priced higher than your regular non-vegan joints, which makes it harder to consciously choose to eat healthy. The store is a narrow space, but it has plenty of chairs inside as well as outside if you wanted to eat your food right away. It wasn't too busy when I came in, and they already had my food ready for me for pickup. I ordered the Spicy Impossible Burger Combo, with original fries and a pineapple green tea. Spicy Impossible Burger: My first time trying a plant-based "meat" patty, I was a little apprehensive about it. I heard it tastes very similar to meat, but it's supposedly more healthy for you (opinions wildly vary about this) since it's not an animal product. When I first bit into it, it very obviously didn't taste like meat to me. However, it has a similar mouth feel to normal meat, so I can see why these are becoming popular. The taste is hard to describe, but it lacked the distinct umami that characterizes meat products. It wasn't offensive, but there was nothing special about the flavor of the patty, it's just there to fill you up, not to wow you. What I did like was the toppings. The burger came with a spicy watery sauce, avocado, vegan cheese, tomato and a very appetizing looking piece of green lettuce. This is what a burger should look like, screaming "Eat Me!". Sadly, the bun had sesame seeds on it, and I have never been a fan of sesame seeded buns, because they're often low quality. The size was just right for me, and I was quite full after finishing it. Was it the best burger I've had? No. But it was a decent burger, and I appreciate that I didn't feel heavy after eating it, like I normally do after a burger. You know that sluggish feeling of not wanting to move after a large meal? This burger doesn't do that to me, so I wouldn't mind getting it again, despite its taste being not particularly memorable. 3.5/5 Original Fries: I think these are air-fried french fries because they're not as greasy as the traditionally fries ones. Very crisp and nicely golden, with no limp or burnt fries. I liked the spicy vegan mayo. It's more of a relish (on the liquid side) than mayo, which works great for me because I dislike pure mayo, which is too heavy and thick. This was a good sauce, which I believe was the same sauce on my burger. The fries could have been seasoned a bit more, but they're fine as they are when paired with the sauce. 4/5 Pineapple Green Tea: My least favorite item. The chunks of fresh pineapple work as a concept to substitute for something unhealthy such as tapioca bubbles, but I found the actual product is not appealing to me. Pineapple is a fibrous fruit, and drinking chunks of it with each sip ruins the experience. I don't want to chew so thoroughly on my first sip before I can drink some more, it's more work for my mouth. The flavor was nothing special. I tasted only pineapple, pineapple, pineapple. There was no hint of lime (even though I can see the sliced lime) or jasmine green tea. It wasn't sweet, so that was the one good point about it. But unless you love pineapple, perhaps a different drink would be a better option. 2.5/5 I would say the portions here are good for the price. It is still a bit more expensive than a non-vegan joint, but not overly so, and you won't be still hungry afterwards in your efforts to be more health-conscious about what you eat. The food is fresh and clean, and I feel more perky after my meal, which is quite rare. I'd love to stop by and try the other things they have to see what else is good. read more
