If work needs to be done on our car, he lets us know, but if work isn't needed, then he clearly lets us know that as well. On one occasion, our van needed a new transmission. Although he does not do transmission work himself, we discussed the merits of getting a new transmission versus buying a new car. Based on the soundness of our van, we ultimately decided that it was best to replace the transmission. He recommended another shop to us and he didn't even charge us for the diagnostic work that he did on the van. Spoke to Greg and booked the appointment same day. Dropped off the car didn't expect much except for what needs to be done. Mind you I am very particular with my cars so I'll know if they have done a good job or not. Finding a good, honest mechanic can be very stressful. Many people have horror stories about…read morevisiting the wrong shop. At downtown auto they do their job well and charge fair prices. I have known the owner Jay for quite some time and have come to him for multiple things. With my previous vehicle my Subaru Forester, I have had everything from general maintenance done to having issues with my driveshaft cable fixed. When I came with concerns about my Subaru not shifting properly, Jay gave it a test drive and informed me right away of what this issue was. I was lucky that I came into the shop when I did. There is a good chance that due the condition of the cable, it likely was close to breaking and would have left me not being able to shift at all. Jay and Danny quickly got my car up on the hoist and within a short period of time my car was all fixed and good as new. Most recently, I visited Downtown Auto to have my leveling kit installed and the exhaust done on my 1500 GMC Sierra. The truck looks and sounds amazing, all thanks to the owner of the shop Jay. With the leveling kit, the truck looks really sharp. Previously, my back end sat a lot higher due to the airbags I have on the truck for towing. With the leveling kit, everything sits nice and flush with a bit more height than I previously had. The exhaust Jay did is what I am most excited about. The owner Jays' specialty is exhaust systems and lifts. You can now hear my truck when its running. It now has that nice V8 rumble, instead of sounding quiet like a car. To top it off he installed a chrome tip, to add that bit of edge to the truck. Whether its repairs or upgrades to the vehicle, Jay always shows me all my options, (pro and cons of each option), and is very honest on what his opinion is. When I go to Downtown Auto, Jay and Danny are always very professional and provide service in a very timely manner and can answer any questions I may have. I would highly recommend this business to anyone looking to get any work done on their vehicle, whether it be general maintenance or upgrades they are the guys to go see. Best quality work in Durham and the most cost efficient.

Noone else was there so my car had 4 guys available to work on it and it was done in 30 mins. Guys offered to check the cabin filter & I said yes as it has never been changed & is 3 years old. Dirty as expected so they changed it. Within 2 weeks my car sounds like a drone is taking off inside my car. Upon inspection Glove box was not reinstalled properly, cover was not reinstalled properly over the filter and filter was installed upside down. Careless mistakes. Not Good.
