Fabric purchased and pillows made at throw pillow class.
    Crystal H.

I can't believe I thought I wouldn't be able to sew. Under Lili's patient, steady hand, conversational tone and a supportive class full of perfectionists trying hard not to worry so much, I sewed two throw pillows. The array of classes seem to be designed to teach you how to master various sewing situations - hems, zippers, garments.. they are all covered and well worth the cost to me. I was a little nervous to take a class at first - mostly because I thought it might be difficult, but turns out it can be easy with help. Outside of having a great time with a group of ladies who were in the same boat I am, taking a class also means you can buy sewing machine rental time at 1/2 price. And I did! The machines are new and easy to use, putting my mother's 1970s robin egged colour one to shame. They even have a variety of speed settings, from turtle to rabbit. True story! Spool of Thread's fabric selection is dearer and more refined than most of Dressew's (my one main point of reference) in two ways - one, yes it's pricier and two, it comes with stories. Like the print I picked that is a reprint from a museum in London - classy and pretty! Do I want to go back for pajama pants, make up bag and tote bag classes? That would be a big fat YES!

Sewing 101 tote bag. Love their fabrics.

I signed up for their sewing 101 class the tote bag which is $40. I went in a couple of days before with my husband to pick out my fabrics. Yes, the fabrics are on the pricier side...some about $20ish per yard. BUT, the choice of fabric is first of all unique and CUTE and of good quality. And they do have a sales bin with equally nice fabric. The class started right on time (I was the last one to arrive) so as soon as I sat down, the class began promptly. Heather was our instructor and she was enthusiastic and fun. She went around to make sure we were on the right track. It seems my latent sewing skills surfaced during class because I had no trouble and was one of the first ones to finish. The tote bag is awesome!! I've also signed up for their Ready, Set, Quilt class and can't wait! The store is well organized. I love their selection of fabric and the ladies that work there are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Yes, I love this place and will be looking to take their other classes. The classes are really popular and they seem to sell out and their website is up-to-date on the availability.

Fabric from SOT, made at their relaxed and easy class.

I'm up to date on how to use a sewing machine, and not one drop of blood was spilled--I'm thrilled! I took their throw cushion cover class and successfully completed two covers over the the 3-hour session. Why couldn't high school sewing have been this enjoyable? The class started on time, Lili's explanations were easy to follow, she did rounds making sure everyone was "getting" it, and I loved the way she made the process relaxed and fun. The fabric choices at the store are WONDERFUL. Worth a trip just to check them out. I paid about $20 for my choice for the covers. I'm so glad I found this store! I'll be back to take advantage of their by-the-hour machine rentals.

Which is why I've trained my main squeeze to sniff out a fabric store from miles away. It was he, as a matter off fact, who spotted The Cloth Shop during our visit to Granville Island. Tucked into a back corner off an alley, this special little spot may not be huge, but they've managed to tastefully fill every little nook and cranny in the store with with every conceivable type, style, and color of quilting cottons, linens, batiks, and flannels. and they come in everything from yardage to quite possibly the best selection of precuts I've seen north of Seattle - from FQ bundles to charm packs to layer cakes to jellyrolls, and even harder-to-find fat eighths too! And the service was so friendly. We were warmly greeted by Nick, who welcomed me to the shop and answered questions from me and other patrons. Nick is himself a quilter so he's very knowledgeable. The prices here are typical for a higher-end fabric shop, but as the saying goes you get what you pay for: quality fabrics from name designers like Moda and Kaffe Fassett, to name two. I will definitely be adding this shop to my rounds when visiting Vancouver.

There aren't too many Granville Island frequenters who haven't stumbled upon the Maiwa Handprints…read moreshop but be prepared to have your mind blown: There is also a Maiwa East shop in the city. Same ethical business practices surrounding artisans but this shop focuses more on furniture and less on textiles. Definitely worth a jaunt over to check out Maiwa East... the prices are rather steep but considering the ethical approach and the fact that these beautiful pieces have made there way from India, not too surprising! Really gorgeous furniture. Promise.

Aware that they were probably closed near the beginning of the shutdowns, I poured over their site, their FB page, and their blog for information about when they would be open, and if they were doing store pick-ups. NONE of this info was available at the time, and their social media posts didn't even acknowledge the pandemic. So I had to send an email. I was told that their locations would be opening in a few weeks' time, and that they had store pick-up available through their online store... but I had to proceed through the whole checkout process in order to even see that it was an option. Strike 1. This should have been at the very top of their website. Strikes 2 and 3 were when I walked over to this location, and was told that I cannot shop there after all. "We are closed to help stop the spread of COVID-19" a sign said on the door. When I rang and spoke to an employee, I was told that only the Granville locations were open, in spite of what I was told over email. So let me get this straight: to "help stop the spread of COVID-19" I was being sent to a densely-populated tourist trap downtown instead of this location, which is quieter and therefore much safer? I would rather not have any locations to visit than be rudely told to go wade through crowds of people not wearing masks or distancing. (And yes, this employee was rude. As a fellow service worker in an essential industry, I found the customer service to be practically nonexistent. I get it, the world sucks right now. But as a paying customer, I expect a little modicum of respect.) Even though I have a gift card left over from the holidays, I won't be spending it any time soon. I'm going to take my business elsewhere until the pandemic is over and Maiwa can resume their normal operations.
