The store is complete disappointment - not a knitter's store - it's like a temporary pop up yarn store. Staff provided the most basic service - one pointing with her foot to bins of the yarn I requested and walking away. Cramped basic shelving, narrow aisles and drapery concealing the back room. Couldn't get out of there fast enough! It is such a far cry from the previous ownership with their cute window displays, lots of knits ups for inspiration and a large, warm inviting atmospheric, together with friendly and knowledgable staff. So dismayed that it's gone so far down hill. I won't be back. read more

Yes, Wet Coast Wools has one of Vancouver's best yarn selections. And yes, that yarn is neatly arranged in a miraculous roomy, bright space that will allow you to find what you want quickly, or enjoy the process of exploring the options until you find fresh inspiration. And true, it also has a great selection of knitting needles and accessories -- whatever you need to start or finish your next project. But none of these are what makes Wet Coast my favourite local yarn shop. What makes Wet Coast my go-to is that it's by far the friendliest, most welcoming shop in town (or at least on the West side.) The very first time I visited Wet Coast, as a newbie knitter, the two salespeople encouraged me to browse, answered all my questions about their selection, and offered me (great) advice in choosing the yarn for my first large-scale project. I loved how they entered into the challenge of helping me figure out the right combination of fibers without making me feel embarrassed by my ignorance or pressured to buy. I felt just as welcome on subsequent visits, when I've always found one or two people sitting at the big work table in the middle of the room, happy to help out with my latest knitting crisis ("wait, *how* do I pick up this dropped stitch?") or to advice (again, pressure-free) on my next purchase. Even when I materialized with some yarn I'd purchased out-of-town, and wanted to buy a second skein to go with it, my challenge was welcomed: Glenda (the store's delightful owner) did an AMAZING job of picking out the most incredibly perfect yarn to combine with what I had on hand. The store's weekly knitting night is just as friendly. The one time I took my kid for an evening of knitting, we were welcomed by a very warm group of women, most of whom were clearly regulars. Even as newcomers, we felt like we belonged. I'm so lucky that Wet Coast Wools is not only the friendliest knitting store on the West Side, but also the store closest to our house. But believe me, it would be worth driving across town for this selection and this warmth. read more

I came to the store today (my second visit ever) to attend a Holli Yeoh knit mending workshop. (My second workshop with Holli). It was fantastic. The store persons seemed informed and the store nicely stocked - although they were out of adult sock forms. Yay Wet Coast Wools! When Homecraft Importers was closing, local knitter and Homecraft employee Glenda announced she was opening her own LYS (Local Yarn Store) in the neighbourhood. Wet Coast Wools opened a few months ago and Glenda has a great large space with a display window on West 4th Avenue near MacDonald. There are lots of wools and cottons from brands that other LYSs aren't stocking. As well, Glenda has several local BC dyers, and intends to expand her local offerings. Prices are comparable to other yarn stores, I figure these are pretty standard as the distributor/dyer would set the price. They have Knit Nights (free drop in) on Monday nights and Thursday afternoons. And there are classes happening too. The space is large enough for at least 20 people to comfortably walk around, with a large table that would seat about 10 people (8 more comfortably), and a couch for lounging too. Glenda is chatty and helpful and not a pushy sales person. She showed me the sample she was knitting for a new class, and I oggled the cute Mochi Mochi toys at the till and in the window (which was currently decorated for Valentine's Day). Glenda helped me pick out some yarn for a project--I wanted Indigo Moon in a blue/ocean colourway and she helped me compare colours, and didn't object when I opened up the skein to look at the dye transitions (I put it all back same as before). I've only visited once so I don't feel right giving 5 stars, especially disclosing that I knew Glenda as a friend before she opened the store. And my only complaint (seriously, only one issue) was the flourescent lighting was a little harsh coming in from the growing dusk on a February afternoon. read more

Really, really helpful staff here. I'm very new to knitting and walked in to learn more about classes and what I would need to get started. They talked to me about all different types of wool, the best needles size and yarn size to get started, showed me the difference between knit and purl, and where to learn more online. They also told me about the knitting classes they run and where to sign up. The classes were full until January, but if I couldn't wait until January to get started they said there were lots of "learn to knit" videos on Youtube and made a list of key words to look up. I'm so happy this place is right in my neighbourhood, what a great little shop! read more

Excellent source for Canadian-produced pure wool for Cowichan-inspired sweaters. Also (oddly enough) an excellent source for "fine gauge" yarns (e.g., Kroy sock yarn, other European fine-gauge (e.g., 3 or 4 ply "fingering yarn")). Don't bother trying to buy cheap acrylic yarn here! read more

What can I say? I'm a fan. Glenda and her staff do a great job. Consistently, I've had positive experiences in this store. There's no intense sales pressure and the staff are well informed. I appreciate that they have, and will share, their own opinions of product but have no intention of forcing their opinions on you. One of the gals and I ended up having a long conversation about square DPNs versus classic style DPNs. She swears by the square ones but was more than happy to say that this was her opinion and acknowledged that it may not be the right fit for everyone. (Regardless, I'm intrigued and look forward to trying them some day.) This yarn shop has a great selection without being overwhelming. Amongst their selection, Wet Coast carries a couple of local dyers and carries an assortment exotic fibre types. Illumani llama yarns are superb, and the Yak yarns are alarmingly gorgeous. I was pleasantly surprised to find Dragonfly Dyewerx amongst the sock yarns. There are so many beautiful, creative colourways, it's worth a look if you're unfamiliar with them. read more
