It's okay that I come here as my large stash guilt trips me into not buying...too much. I can still look though.

And true, it also has a great selection of knitting needles and accessories -- whatever you need to start or finish your next project. But none of these are what makes Wet Coast my favourite local yarn shop. What makes Wet Coast my go-to is that it's by far the friendliest, most welcoming shop in town (or at least on the West side.) The very first time I visited Wet Coast, as a newbie knitter, the two salespeople encouraged me to browse, answered all my questions about their selection, and offered me (great) advice in choosing the yarn for my first large-scale project. I loved how they entered into the challenge of helping me figure out the right combination of fibers without making me feel embarrassed by my ignorance or pressured to buy. I felt just as welcome on subsequent visits, when I've always found one or two people sitting at the big work table in the middle of the room, happy to help out with my latest knitting crisis ("wait, *how* do I pick up this dropped stitch?") or to advice (again, pressure-free) on my next purchase. Even when I materialized with some yarn I'd purchased out-of-town, and wanted to buy a second skein to go with it, my challenge was welcomed: Glenda (the store's delightful owner) did an AMAZING job of picking out the most incredibly perfect yarn to combine with what I had on hand. The store's weekly knitting night is just as friendly. The one time I took my kid for an evening of knitting, we were welcomed by a very warm group of women, most of whom were clearly regulars. Even as newcomers, we felt like we belonged. I'm so lucky that Wet Coast Wools is not only the friendliest knitting store on the West Side, but also the store closest to our house. But believe me, it would be worth driving across town for this selection and this warmth.

Who sells a never heard of notion to a husband looking for help in a knitting store? At least sell yarn that can be exchanged. SMH. I will be taking my business elsewhere. Feel ripped off!

Do you like your yarn products fully complete -- already knitting into adorable hats or felted onto…read moresweet-smelling soaps? Knotty has you covered, with the most delightful assortment of felted and knit gifts. Do you like your yarn ready-to-knit, hanging neatly in tempting arrays of color and texture? Knotty is your spot, offering both the basics (the best assortment I've seen of Sugar Bush yarn, among many other brands) and some lovely options for local, handy-dyed yarns in a range of weights. Do you like your yarn not-yet-spun, ready to spin yourself from high-quality roving? This is your happy place, because Knotty has the most astonishing range of roving I've seen anywhere, in a huge range of colors and available pre-cut or by weight (or yard), along with a range of fibers you can add to your spinning. Do you like your yarn not-yet-spun OR carded? Amazingly enough, Knotty has YOU covered too: It's the first place I've seen lovely, soft wool, fresh off the sheep, either dyed or un-dyed. So pretty. So soft. So hardcore, you amazing spinner people. Do you like your yarn still on the sheep? Well, sorry, you're out of luck. As far as I can tell, Knotty does not actually have a sheep available to shave or cuddle.

He was out of stock on the yarn I was looking for, but recommended a comparable yarn that I actually ended up being much happier with! I also bought some lovely hand-dyed sock yarn from him. I mentioned I might want to use it along with another color to make some striped socks, and he told me to email him when I decided, and he'd dye another batch specially for me if I wanted! While he was winding my yarn into a ball, I mentioned that I had a busted swift at home, which was why I wasn't winding my own. He gave me some tips on how to fix it and even gave me some scraps of silk yarn for free to bring home to use for the repair! That's service. (The repair went fabulously, by the way.) I found the selection to be lovely for a small shop, and although you may not find exactly what you need, it seems the owners really care about their business and will go great lengths to make you a satisfied customer. I will be back as soon as I have some pennies saved up and some projects finished!
