I like to consider myself somewhat of a connoisseur of quilt shops. Oh, who are we kidding? I'm a fabric addict! Which is why I've trained my main squeeze to sniff out a fabric store from miles away. It was he, as a matter off fact, who spotted The Cloth Shop during our visit to Granville Island. Tucked into a back corner off an alley, this special little spot may not be huge, but they've managed to tastefully fill every little nook and cranny in the store with with every conceivable type, style, and color of quilting cottons, linens, batiks, and flannels. and they come in everything from yardage to quite possibly the best selection of precuts I've seen north of Seattle - from FQ bundles to charm packs to layer cakes to jellyrolls, and even harder-to-find fat eighths too! And the service was so friendly. We were warmly greeted by Nick, who welcomed me to the shop and answered questions from me and other patrons. Nick is himself a quilter so he's very knowledgeable. The prices here are typical for a higher-end fabric shop, but as the saying goes you get what you pay for: quality fabrics from name designers like Moda and Kaffe Fassett, to name two. I will definitely be adding this shop to my rounds when visiting Vancouver. read more

This is a beautifully charming shop that should be a must-see destination for any quilters in the Vancouver area! The shop is full of gorgeous, up-to-date fabrics with many kits available for those that don't have the time to just browse. Nice selection of patterns, notions and fat quarters for those that just want something small to enjoy or to give as a gift to a quilting friend. The ladies are helpful, knowledgeable and cheery. I spent a lot of time enjoying the array of lovely items and had to come back one more time, just because it was on my way....ahem..cough-cough, before I left the island. read more

A great little fabric shop which carries a small selection of Moda fabrics, including a few jelly rolls and other precuts. It caters to the quilting crowd and has an ample fabric collection to get you going on a project. The shop is small but is draped in fabric from floor to ceiling. We gravitated toward the table of Rouenneries fabric by French General for Moda. A simple quilt showed the color range of the fabrics and how nicely it would look in a finished project. You'll also find basic notions, books, and quilt supplies (did I mention the shop is small? Do not expect a large selection in any one area). The staff person was busy helping another customer while we were there, but she seemed knowledgeable and extremely helpful. My only complaint would be the steep prices. I came here looking to buy jelly rolls but the prices were $55 per roll! Jelly rolls can be purchased online for $25-35, so I left the store empty handed and went online to purchase my supplies. read more

Horrible experience. I went in there yesterday holding a dress I needed a piece of fabric for. As soon as one of the saleswomen saw me she rudely said "You need to be wearing a mask!". Then said "And did you sanitize your hands?" I said I didn't have a mask and asked if they did. She reluctantly gave me one then turned back to what she was doing. I was ignored as I walked around the tiny store holding the dress. So I left. I will never be back. read more

I was just in the shop this afternoon and wish I could say I was treated rudely. The sad fact is that I wasn't treated at all. No greeting, no "excuse me" when the salesperson wanted to get by me, or reach right in front of me - twice, or moved the fat quarter I had just set aside to buy. No acknowledgement when I caught her eye to ask a question. I expected way better, and since the store is close to my new office, I would have settled for even a little bit better. read more

I have mixed feelings about this little store! I'll list the good stuff first. The best thing about this store is their fabrics! Despite being a small store, they sell a huge range of beautiful quilting fabrics. Like someone else said, the store is literally stacked floor to ceiling in fabric bolts! It's hard for me to go in there without being tempted to buy something! The fabrics aren't cheap at all, but they're high quality. That said, as another reviewer pointed out, their customer service is lacking. I've been in with my mum, a 60-something-year-old decades-long quilter and they're all over her every wish and desire. As soon as I go in by myself, I am rarely given a glance. Even when I'm the only one in the shop, I have to ask for help (often no acknowledgement at all when I walk in). When I was in the other day, I even got an eye roll when I said I was looking for a lower quality item than the one they had. When I went to the til with my purchases, I waited for at least two minutes for the lady at the counter to stop what she was doing to help me. I might be young but I am not a beginner sewer/quilter by any means and have both the experience and funds to shop there. Even if I didn't, I'd expect a cheerier attitude! Now, all of that said - I've definitely been in a couple of times when someone working has been very friendly and helpful! So like I said - mixed feelings! What a cute shop with super fabrics! More for the modern quilter than a traditional one. After shop after shop full of batiks, I was so happy to see such a great variety of cute fabrics. It is a small shop, but every fabric is nicely displayed and deserves a showcase. Staff was friendly enough, allowing me to walk around, trying to narrow down my purchases, without being pestered. Definitely worth the trip into Granville! read more

Although this is geared toward Quilting I did find some materials and patterns suited for other projects mainly greeting cards with cloth backgrounds. Compared to the other shops that I've been to I appreciate their more neutral designs. I like to get the pre-cut squares. read more

Mainly a quilting store, they offer classes in sewing and quilting (I haven't tried them myself). There is an extensive selection of patterns, batiks, and brocades, plus notions. They have some fun pre-cut packs of different fabrics. This place is perfect for quilters or people who make bags and purses. read more

I started being a customer of The Cloth Shop in 1988. Barbara Jean and Maria are the force behind this delightful shop. Their sense of colour, design and community are amazing. I never cease to be amazed with their choices to share with us in the quilting community. I love their new location on Granville Island and look forward to many years of enjoyment of shooing and exploring their shop. Always fun to fabric shop. This place was packed with many bolts that were well grouped. I also appreciated the sample quilts and kits for ideas. Service was friendly and helpful. Prices were on the higher end but that's the cost of good quality 100% cotton fabric, and I like supporting small businesses, so they were fine. I would love to go back again sometime. read more

I was in this lovely quilt shop a few week ago. We were on our way to Alaska by a Cruise. The owner was so helpful and pleasant .She took the time to explain different things too me an I certainly didn't feel rushed. I bought a fair amount of fabric that I hadn't seen here and I will certainly contact the shop if I need something a bit more original. I did sign up for a beautiful quilt project that send me a quilt piece to do each month for 13 months. I am so looking forward to it. This is the most beautiful fabric and quilt store I have ever seen. It is a hidden gem. While small, it is overflowing in cascading, colorful fabrics, beautifully displayed. The bolts of fabric are arranged by color or combinations of colors - blue/white, turquoise, purples, fuchia/orange, black/white/gray, etc. There are cut pieces bundled with ribbon and arranged in the most inviting way and set on magnificent quilts using the same fabrics. These displays invite one's own creativity and desire to make a quilt. The quilts are designed by the proprietors who are engaging, delightful people.
