I see that there are a number of reviews regarding bad service here. My personal experience was that I would say a bit over a decade ago I stopped shopping there for that very reason. Then I had to go in once for an urgent reason a couple of years later, probably just before Covid hit, and the service was *so* good that I said thank you to the salesperson for it. When she asked if that had not been my previous experience and I said no it hadn't been, she said that they had actually made a marked effort to improve service since I had given up shopping there. I have now returned to shopping there. They often have what I need, and the service is indeed at least acceptable every time since then and often very good. Service even recently ranged into excellent when I wanted a certain applique that turned into a special order with some phone calls and followup and thoughtful suggestions. read more

Fabricland has been at this location for quite a while. There are some good points but also some bad points about this store that has been consistent over the years. Good Points: 1)free parking 2)lots of fabric to choose from and if you are a member, there is an additional discount 3)nice selection of notions 4)they have discounted fabrics at the back of the store that is very cheap Bad Points: 1)Customer service staff who have been working at this store over the years aren't friendly or helpful. The staff who have been working at this stores for more than ten years never say hi and are rude at times. 2)Store is disorganized and unless you know where the fabrics are, it is difficult to find what you want. I was about to leave the place without buying anything because I was frustrated at the customer service staff. Thankfully, there was a younger staff who was able to help me. Only been to this location once. They open pretty late- 11 am. They should open earlier. During the pandemic , the lineups are pretty crazy. It's good they make you use hand sanitizers. Even though there's a requirement to wear mask, I saw many people not wearing masks in the store. Some fabrics are a good deal but others are quite expensive. I would go more often but i don't like lining up and waiting . read more

2 stars for the huge variety of fabric, great discounted prices and for one of the staff members. I dealt with a very friendly lady who came up to me and asked if I needed help, and when I was ready she was there for me right away. She was quick at cutting, and writing up the receipt to bring to register. She also made sure to double check how much I wanted cut and as a new customer I was very pleased with her customer care. She called over a woman named Maureen to hop on cash to check me out, and Maureen is the sole reason this review only has 2 stars and the only reason I'm even leaving a review. If I was just leaving a review based on Maureen herself, I'd give her negative 2737 stars and suggest you shut down your business. This isn't the first I've seen written about her and I'm sure it won't be the last, but she is actively deterring your customers and deserves a call out. Maureen was incredibly rude, and stand-offish. I noticed a fabric marking pencil beside the register in a plastic cup and because I couldn't see the price (it wasn't faced towards me) I asked Maureen how much they were. She stood there in silence for a few seconds, scowled at me and said "its on the thing."Gee, thanks Maureen. You could also clearly see the price as it was facing you so just as easily could have just told me the price or asked me to turn the cup around. I wouldn't be asking you a question if the answer was obviously in front of my face. Don't be in customer service if you hate servicing customers. You'd think with age comes knowledge, but maybe for some it just brings crudeness to others and a need to ruin someone else's day. read more

Where are all the fabric stores?? Years ago there used to be many many retail fabric stores around Vancouver. Now ... only a select few are left. Fabricland has been around since ... forever!! For the average seamstress / tailor ... this Fabricland is Heaven on Earth. Everything from pins and needles to bolts upon bolts of fabric. There is a notion section, Yarn section, Quilting seciton, Bargain section, Remants bin, Patterns, bedding, curtains, outdoor fabrics, Drapery section, dress forms ... on and on and on!!! I dropped in today, and it happened to be their Grand Reopening. Honestly, I hadn't been here enough to recognize what had been redone. The buttons and bobbins were in the same place as before... I was looking to make some book covers. I found a really nice weave, but it was in the Upholstery section (= wider bolts) so I got a normal cotton fabric. Previously, I bought a white, fine net-type fabric to wrap my wedding favours with (I can't remember what it's called). if you're not into sewing, check out the left side and the back. There have finished products like drapes, bedclothes, throws. If you get a membership ($15 -- I think for one year), you can get up to 50% off. Disclosure: I don't use fabric stores enough to know where the Dressew and Fabricana mentioned by the other reviewers are. This location has everything I would need, but if you sew seriously like they seem to be, you might want to listen to them. read more

My mother has been making quilts for kids in Fostercare and group homes for years and years and Fabricland is where she buys her fabric. Also during Covid she was making masks, 1,000 per month, to be shipped overseas to foreign countries and refugee camps in Africa etc. She buys so much fabric from them and they, knowing what she uses the fabric for, give her incredible deals on the bulk fabric she buys. Ive been with her numerous times when she was there and numerous times by myself and the staff are always friendly, experienced and helpful, even if I'm having a bad day and am a bit grumpy they are always personable, understanding, friendly and love to chat while they measure your fabric. I have never had a bad experience with any of the staff and each time I'm there they are ever so friendly, experienced, helpful for where to find things and most are sewers as well and have unlimited experience with multiple types of sewing. I've seen them helping other customers and numerous of them and they are so good with people always. And even customers are helpful and friendly with each other. I don't know who gave that bad review but I can't believe it, that has never been my experience in all my years of shopping there. Sewers are a warm friendly experienced mature warm hearted bunch! I admit I have never been a fan of Fabricland. High prices. Poor quality. They could care less service. Today, looking for 3" foam for a bench seat and a zipper, I stopped in because foam was on 50% off. What they had was expensive to start with and even at 50% off did not purchase because of the damage and discoloration. 22" invisible zipper was almost $6! Seriously? Fabricana sells @ $2.99 and 50% off when notions are on sale. To make this even more rediculus if you want 20% off a membership is $25. Even Michael's prices are not this bad! My first visit in years..... I will not waste my time or money again in the future! read more

Not sure how I got roped into buying a year-long membership here, because their service is atrocious. There is just not another word for it. And this is based on several visits for a project and I figured since I already got the membership it would be cheaper to get the rest of my supplies there. But they certainly could be a little more helpful and friendly. Case in point - there were about 5 employees milling about and fewer than 5 customers in the store and I asked for help to find a specific item that I knew would be hard to locate (an upholstery needle) and the employee pointed me in the direction of the back wall where there were a thousand other items hanging and said "it's back there". Wow. It wasn't like she was helping anyone else. Also, the fabrics are all in a jumble and stacked right on top of each other, making it really difficult to find anything. Plus I got the same answer from a different employee when I was trying to match a fabric that was in my hand "oh that kind of fabric should be in that pile over there". Then she went back to chatting with 2 other employees who were also doing nothing. They display absolutely no interest in fabrics or anything craft-related which is ironic, maybe the place should be renamed Go-Find-It-Yourself-Land because we're in We-Don't-Care-Land. Why bother hiring people at all, I can measure and cut fabric just as well as they can. read more

I love fabric. There is nothing to love at Fabricland. I haven't spent much time fabric shopping in Vancouver but if this store is any indication, people who home sew can't be very fashion forward because the fabric of choice would have to be polar fleece, flannel, sweatpant material or quilting cottons. Silks or woolens? No chance. They didn't even have what I would consider a baseline of interfacings. This place is fairly large but so very sad. I did grant an extra star because I found a bolt of fabric (that contained unknown fibres!) that was incredibly cheap, to use for a Halloween costume. I can't imagine returning here unless I want to start dressing like the folks on the "Best of Walmart". Not going to happen. read more

When you end up fighting with the barely able to speak or understand English clerk about the item that is most definitely on sale you know it's time to leave. First of all they are not pet friendly. Which sometimes is no big deal (at least not in the summer time). I was there at 2:30 on Tuesday afternoon, 15 Jan. OMG! Could the staff be any slower or non-responsive??? We (another customer and I) could only see one person working the register as we waited for someone to cut our material. Calls for help at the cutting table went unanswered. Finally, 10 minutes later someone appeared out of nowhere to cut our material (there were only three customers in the whole store!). The poor woman ahead of me could not get it into the material cutter's feeble head that she only wanted 1 meter of the (ribbon?) even though it was buy 1 meter get 2 free -she only wanted 1 meter, but she HAD to leave with 3 meters! Of course they only cater to their members, signs everywhere say 50% off, but the fine print says 50% off for member only -at $25 a year that's great if your a full time seamstress, but guess what? For those of us doing the rare project there are plenty of other fabric stores in Vancouver that would like my business. I will never be back. read more

Not sure why there's so much hate. I've shopped here a half dozen times in the last year, and service has always been fine. Prices are competitive if you buy a membership. If you sew a lot, it is definitely worth it. For my last project, Fabricland priced out better than Rokko on Fraser- because of both the member discount and the fact that Fabricland would sell me 0.5 meters while Rokko had a 1 meter minimum. The notions with member discount are also very well priced. They have member only deep discount sales every month or so. Wait til you get the email for it then stock up on things like elastic, snaps, interfacing, and other all purpose items. read more

Just went here the other day for some "light" sewing shopping and noticed that the store is much larger than last time I visited (Nov 10). They have obviously taken over the appliance store that was next door, and as others have said the store has doubled in size (at least). Thus their selection is much expanded. I did not get a chance to explore much because I was towing my child around the store. The one thing that turned me off, as has so many times before is the appalling customer service here. No nods, no welcomes, no words, no nothing! I visited on a Tuesday afternoon and the number of staff that were present easily met or exceeded the number of customers that were there, yet when I finally managed to track a person down, they begrudgingly offered help finding zipper sliders. Like previous times, their notion-stock is miserable, this time out of the ~10 hooks for zipper sliders only two had stock on them. The membership discount seems to be a good deal, plus you get fliers if you buy one so that you will know when and what they have on sale, but you really have to shop here often to rationalize the charge. All told, my experience here is not much different from other Fabriclands (e.g. Calgary), so I often wonder about their corporate strategy ... or if they even have one?! read more

I have to be pretty desperate to go to Fabricland. It'll mean I've failed to find what I'm looking for at both Dress Sew and Fabricana, and even then I'll hesitate. It's not that it's a terrible store, the staff is nice and they're pretty good about have at least one size of most patterns. It's just that in the rather cramped store location, Fabricland tries to have a little bit of every type of fabric and notion. The result is that they don't really do anything well, just a whole lot of 'kind-of-okay'. A little sports wear, a little home decor, and a little quilting fabric equals a whole store of not what I came out of Marine Drive especially for. read more

Stay clear. (Go to Fabricana instead!) This is quite possibly the most abysmal service I've ever experienced. Went in with my daughters to get supplies for one of the girls' middle-school sewing class, with a list from the sewing teacher who'd said be sure to ask for help so we get the right kind of material. Before anything actually happened, it's worth noting that the store is very grubby and dirty-looking and the staff all looked miserable and depressed. Nobody offered us any help, so I finally approached a clerk and asked if she could help us with the school supplies, and without speaking, she pointed me dismissively toward the discount section and walked away. After a frustrated blind search (no idea what I was looking for), I asked another clerk who dismissed us in the same way -- pointed to the discount section. (not sure why the discount section. Does our mixed-race family read as poor?) While my two daughters were in another part of the store carrying our quiet little 10 lb Maltipoo, a woman approached one of the girls and said repeatedly that dogs are not allowed in the store and then said, "Please tell this to your friend or sister or whoever she is." My daughters are biracial, and small racist microaggressions like this happen often enough that I know the clerk would not have said that if they were two similar-looking blondes. Meanwhile, I finally went up to a third store clerk and told her I've already asked two other people for help and have been rudely dismissed and so could I get some proper help? She begrudgingly helped us and, while we were finally getting some fabric cut, another woman suddenly came out of the back and very aggressively told us dogs aren't allowed. I said sure, we'll take our purchases and go, after which I found out the woman who'd been helping me was the same woman who'd been offensive to my daughters, and, as it turns out, also said to one of them "There's a sign on the door. Relax! Five stars is for the Fabricland I shop at in West Kelowna. Friendly, helpful, knowledgeable staff. Store is new with plenty of natural light, an exhausting amount of fabrics, clean bathroom and a few spots for hubby to sit down! My ONLY problem is their previous location, for decades, was a 4 minute drive from my house but now it's 30 minutes away! Hubby is happy though as I'm not buying quite so much fabric anymore. FYI, Kelowna Fabricland was the Western head office when Mr Mel was alive. He set the tone for customer service and it remains. I've been to Fabriclands in Vernon, Penticton, Chilliwack, Abbotsford, and even Fabricvilles (affiliates) out east. They are GREAT! LOWER MAINLAND FABRICLANDS ARE HORRIBLE. Minimum wage, no supervision. While at college I worked for one in Richmond. The manager was wonderful and by and large we were a happy crew. We took pride in keeping our departments clean. Mine was upholstery. The store is long gone but as I recall once the manager became ill and there was no positive direction, no happy leader, folks didn't care and it fell apart. Perhaps that what's going on with Fabricland in Vancouver? There are other options, other stores. Use them. read more

I always check here first for whatever I need - chances are there's a sale going on and as a member, I get a 20% discount on most regular-priced things. Most of the staff are helpful and decent. But I suspect the management is setting the tone for a difficult work ambiance - they seem to do a lot of nothing while being harsh with their underlings. There's never been a good, upbeat ambiance here, and yes, these things are palpable to shoppers. I would like to suggest the management put pleasant expressions on their faces, get off their oversized duffs and pitch in - there's no sense of 'team' here and that's a shameful way to run a business. They obviously don't realize how it affects the whole operation, right down to the shopping experience. The last two times I've been there I was 'picked on' by a woman I've only seen these times, and while I found her actions laughable, I suspect she's just acting out the difficulty of that work environment. If it happens again I'll probably call her on it, but with pity, not acrimony. The fabric selection is so-so. When I went a few days ago, they didn't have two of the notions I needed so I wound up going to the New West location, where I got everything I needed AND lots of cheerful conversation/no attitude from the staff there. It's an OK place to shop if you are as good as ignoring the employees as they are at ignoring you. One employee particularly, an older lady with a permanent scowl on her face, is possibly the rudest person I've ever met in retail. I've shopped here numerous times because I buy fabrics and notions for a small craft business I have, and I happen to live within walking distance. To be fair, not all employees are rude and unfriendly but out of all the employees here probably only one or two are actually acceptable. At one time one of the friendlier employees told me that I could take a photo of my membership card. If I forget to bring my card I could just show the picture to the clerks and they would give me my discount. I believed her. Unfortunately the person I ran into when I did forget my card was the fore-mentioned older lady. I showed her the picture. She gave me a resounding "NO!" and looked at me like I was an annoying fly she was about to smash before walking away. Seriously, in retail?? In general, their service only extends to cutting your fabrics. Anything else you are better on your own. If I had another choice for my sewing needs I would not even set foot in this Fabricland. Until a better solution comes along, I will just have to quickly grab what I need and get the heck out of there asap. Or, in a hot summer like this, I will just go in to smell new fabrics and enjoy a nice air conditioned room without having to speak to anyone or spend a dollar. read more

I have been here off and on over the years. I used to go here back in high school when I took sewing classes and a few years after came here off and on. I remember coming here with my mom on a regular basis especially for my fabulous costumes over the years. Even their discounted material had some inspiring prints. I have seen the selection and the customer service of the store decline over the years to the point where this is no longer my go to place, however, 'cause it is close to home will still come in for the basics here and there. Truthfully as one yelper mentioned, there is really nothing here that is fashion forward enough to inspire cool DIY outfits. I would rather spend $5 more per meter at Dressew. read more

First time to visit this place and I was greeted by uncaring, unfriendly staff. One can't even get any assistance on the fabric info, simple advice, not even on measurements for a project! Ask where you can find a specific item - just look around. Ask if a certain fabric can be used for a named project - they won't give 'anything'. No help on anything...not accommodating...very unfriendly atmosphere. It's like shouting to you: come and get your stuff and go! And what I got from that is: 'you're not welcome and do not come again'. Oh, and treat you like you have some kind of communicable disease. We all are scared of the pandemic, but do not act like you're the cleanest one. Staff there sees a lot of customers daily and in contact with them - do you know if the person you are treating like there is a communicable disease is like you? Or are they who is supposed to be scared of you because I have been working at home since March of last year and just goes out for grocery shopping - this shopping as one odd out since finishing a project that needs to be done asap. DO NOT treat your customers if you do not want to be treated the way you treat them yourself. Remember too: you are in customer service - what do you think is required to be qualified as a customer service staff??? And, where do you think wages are coming from?
