Fabricland has been at this location for quite a while. There are some good points but also some bad points about this store that has been consistent over the years. Good Points: 1)free parking 2)lots of fabric to choose from and if you are a member, there is an additional discount 3)nice selection of notions 4)they have discounted fabrics at the back of the store that is very cheap Bad Points: 1)Customer service staff who have been working at this store over the years aren't friendly or helpful. The staff who have been working at this stores for more than ten years never say hi and are rude at times. 2)Store is disorganized and unless you know where the fabrics are, it is difficult to find what you want. I was about to leave the place without buying anything because I was frustrated at the customer service staff. Thankfully, there was a younger staff who was able to help me. I think her name is Keila. My feelings are torn about this place because there isn't a lot of fabric stores around. The fabric stores itself is great, I just dread coming back because of the customer service staff.

The staff were super rude at this location and the prices were a bit higher than competing fabric stores I thought.

There happened to be a sewing class going on that Saturday morning, and I was a little jealous I wasn't enrolled haha. I was impressed with the assortment of garment fabrics in a wide variety of tasteful colors, and most of them were in natural fibers. I'm not a quilter, but they had a really cute patterned cotton selection, too. A few mannequins displayed clothing pieces that were labeled with the sewing pattern and type of fabric used, which really helped me get a sense of what to pick for my own project. Staff were friendly and helpful, but also let me browse in silence for a long time until I was ready to ask questions. Pricing was on-par with most independent fabric shops, and I appreciated that the prices were given in both per meters and yards!

She's been here many times in the past, but it was all new to me. This is definitely the kind of place to go to get fabrics or patterns in any color, pattern, material or aesthetic. I really liked how so many of thier clothing patterns came in large sizes for larger people. And along with all the bolts of fabrics, they also had all sorts of sewing tools and accessories and embellishments, too. This would be a fabulous place to go to for inspiration, or to get advice from the super knowledgeable ladies who work here. I noticed, too, that they have an area with sewing machines, and they offer classes, to make various projects. How cool is that!

Which is why I've trained my main squeeze to sniff out a fabric store from miles away. It was he, as a matter off fact, who spotted The Cloth Shop during our visit to Granville Island. Tucked into a back corner off an alley, this special little spot may not be huge, but they've managed to tastefully fill every little nook and cranny in the store with with every conceivable type, style, and color of quilting cottons, linens, batiks, and flannels. and they come in everything from yardage to quite possibly the best selection of precuts I've seen north of Seattle - from FQ bundles to charm packs to layer cakes to jellyrolls, and even harder-to-find fat eighths too! And the service was so friendly. We were warmly greeted by Nick, who welcomed me to the shop and answered questions from me and other patrons. Nick is himself a quilter so he's very knowledgeable. The prices here are typical for a higher-end fabric shop, but as the saying goes you get what you pay for: quality fabrics from name designers like Moda and Kaffe Fassett, to name two. I will definitely be adding this shop to my rounds when visiting Vancouver.

Same ethical business practices surrounding artisans but this shop focuses more on furniture and less on textiles. Definitely worth a jaunt over to check out Maiwa East... the prices are rather steep but considering the ethical approach and the fact that these beautiful pieces have made there way from India, not too surprising! Aware that they were probably closed near the beginning of the shutdowns, I poured over their site, their FB page, and their blog for information about when they would be open, and if they were doing store pick-ups. NONE of this info was available at the time, and their social media posts didn't even acknowledge the pandemic. So I had to send an email. I was told that their locations would be opening in a few weeks' time, and that they had store pick-up available through their online store... but I had to proceed through the whole checkout process in order to even see that it was an option. Strike 1. This should have been at the very top of their website. Strikes 2 and 3 were when I walked over to this location, and was told that I cannot shop there after all. "We are closed to help stop the spread of COVID-19" a sign said on the door. When I rang and spoke to an employee, I was told that only the Granville locations were open, in spite of what I was told over email. So let me get this straight: to "help stop the spread of COVID-19" I was being sent to a densely-populated tourist trap downtown instead of this location, which is quieter and therefore much safer? I would rather not have any locations to visit than be rudely told to go wade through crowds of people not wearing masks or distancing. (And yes, this employee was rude. As a fellow service worker in an essential industry, I found the customer service to be practically nonexistent. I get it, the world sucks right now. But as a paying customer, I expect a little modicum of respect.) Even though I have a gift card left over from the holidays, I won't be spending it any time soon. I'm going to take my business elsewhere until the pandemic is over and Maiwa can resume their normal operations.
