Stayed here for two nights when I came to Nanaimo for a workshop. Parking is free for those staying at the hotel, which was nice, seeing as the lot we parked at charges $4/hour. As of December 13, 2019, this hotel is currently being renovated to be upgraded. They're starting with the upper floors and making their way down. If you happen to be placed in one of the rooms on the fourth floor, the may be a remaining strong odour of paint. My colleague ended up switching rooms because the smell was so overwhelming. In comparison to the fourth floor, the lower floors aren't as modern looking. My colleague and I both stayed in different floors (myself on the fourth and they were on the first) and I found the bed to be too soft while she found it to be a bit lumpy. The walls and the doors aren't very soundproof, so if there's someone talking loudly on their phone next door, be prepared to hear everything. The same applies for loud individuals walking by on the streets outside, you might be woken up by them depending on how loud they are late at night. Heads up: the TVs they have are being upgraded and currently don't have HDMI cable options, for those who want to bring their own devices to plug in and watch shows. Each room comes with a complimentary fridge and they also have a microwave on the lower floors available to guests in case anybody wants to warm anything up. The rooms also have many wall plugs and two USB plugin options by the bed. There was also a Keurig machine available in the room, and complementary cookies and tea at the check in counter. My favourite part of the hotel room was the bathroom and showers - I really appreciated how the shampoo/conditioner/lotion was in reusable and refillable bottles. The water pressure in the shower was awesome, although the water flow sound was shriekingly loud. Complementary hot breakfast is available from 6:30-10:30am, which is great if you need to save money, but be forewarned, it seemed like a lot of their food was quite processed. My colleagues and I found that the breakfast didn't sit as well with our stomachs, so we passed on the next morning. The customer service was phenomenal and we so appreciated their staff here! They checked in on us whenever we walked by and when we were having our breakfast. If I was reviewing based on customer service alone, they'd be getting 5/5! Alas, there are many other things to consider when deciding to stay at a hotel. Should I visit again, I might consider staying here once more, but it'll realistically be dependent on whether they're done renovations and have finished upgrading everything.

The room was clean and has everything you need. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was alright. The AC was my favourite part because it was operated via a remote that offered multiple options for the flow of air and timing. The TV channels were good for us and the bed was average. Heads up, the elevator is right by the check-in counter. Do not make the mistake I did by not spotting it, walking past it, and carrying my luggage up five flights of stairs.

The employees would always help you to the water and make sure you were comfortable with the pfd's. When you returned, they would help you from the water and carry the kayaks back for you. Oh, to fall so far! Alberni Outpost is close to Newcastle Island, which is a wonderful and easy place for novice kayakers to explore. When you are kayaking back at sunset it is obscenely beautiful on the water. This is what gives this business a 3 star rating and not a 2 star. If the service was ok, it would give this place a 4 star rating. If management is able to get back to its stellar benchmark, this place would be a 5 star rating easily and a must for any visitor to Nanaimo. I recommend kayaking here, but bring some water bottles which you can refill at the campsite on Newcastle and pack a picnic. And write a review. I want to know if we just caught them on the worst day of the year or something.
