Bingo in the Heights at SPJST Lodge 88 is such a fun experience. It's incredibly organized and well run, and the staff keep everything moving and are friendly and efficient. Bingo is $15 and cash only, and you're free to bring your own food and drinks as long as they're not items the lodge sells. The crowd is younger and much livelier than the stereotypical bingo scene. Doors open at 5:30, and getting there early really matters if you want a good seat because it fills up fast. You can even reserve tables for birthdays or group events. We were invited to swim at the pool by a member and the pool is so nice! It had extremely affordable beverages and snacks for the kids. They host a variety of fun day events that I think are worth it. I would definitely look into getting a membership. read more

I highly recommend gathering your group for a Thursday Bingo Night here, so much fun!!! They have an efficient system in place, and it is $15 (cash only) for a packet of bingo cards for a chance to win the big bucks for each round. I recommend getting there early when doors open at 5:30 PM, to save your table(s), especially if you have a large group, since it fills up quickly (including parking lot) because it's the place to be on a Thursday night. Their kitchen is currently closed, so you're allowed to bring your own food, which is fine. They do have concessions and a mini bar with sodas, water, beer, and seltzers too. Bingo on Thursday nights at 7pm at the SPJST Lodge is one of my favorite activities in Houston! It is the perfect atmosphere to celebrate a birthday or special event, or just for any fun Thursday night. The excitement and suspense in the room is palpable as all participants thoroughly scan their cards for a match. For $15, you get 12 bingo cards to participate in that night's rounds of Bingo. You can bring in your own food or drinks, and there is also a concessions stand and a bar located at the edges of the room. Coworkers, friends, friends from out of town, book club, family. It's a fun 3 hours on a Thursday evening for all ages. When people yell "BINGO" the crowd BOOOOOs, it's such a hoot. 1) if you have a big group, have someone(s) come early when they open the doors 5:30/6pm and save y'alls seats!~ and by save your seats i mean- you can set out a tablecloth, do whatever but as it fills up, prepare to be asked "are you using that seat??" cause it gets PACKED and full fast. They have a new reservation system I haven't used yet but it seems CLUTCH. 2) concessions take apple pay! (woo) and obvi credit card. 3) eat before 7pm cause once game starts, there is no room on these tiny tables for you to play bingo and be eating a box of chicken 4) they do sell antones sandwiches, chickfila (it sells out fast too), and snacks at the concessions. along with pretty cheap pitchers of beeeer. 5) there are two intermissions, so you have a chance to do what you need to do during that time 6) O69 you can bring in your own food, snacks, order pizza, do whatever. beer + wine are the only alcohol allowed with a $4 corking fee. the bingo sheets are 12 whole ass games for $15, cash only. read more

Every Friday junior, a dedicated community of people come together for a fun, casual but serious game of bingo. - Bingo sheets ($15) & daubers ($2); bingo items are CASH ONLY. Credit cards OK everywhere else. - One sheet per person is plenty. They move pretty fast and I learned the hard way lol - BYOB (liquor and wine only). The evening got off to a bumpy start when our reservation couldn't be found. Fortunately, the ladies who I was directed to where determined to make it right...especially when they heard we were from out of town and our hostess had a family emergency that left me figuring it all out by myself with six kids (hers and mine!). I'd taken out the cash from the ATM for the bingo cards, but was giving up hope when Anna came out of nowhere and told me to get the kids to grab some chairs to go with the extra table she'd found for us. One of Houston's best kept secrets (although it's becoming more well known) is Bingo in the Heights every Thursday night. This is a great place to come with a group of friends to hang out and hopefully win some money. You can bring your own food and drinks, except for drinks they sell at the bar (mainly water, beer, sodas). Alcohol has a $4 corking fee/bottle. You'd expect that for a corking fee they'd have a wine bottle opener but they don't so make sure to bring your own. Doors open at 5:30PM but I recommend your whole party come early since seats fill up quickly and they are very strict once they reach capacity. The environment is competitive but so much fun. Thursday night Bingo in the Heights is awesome! Get here early or they will run out of space and parking will be challenging. I arrived around 6 and had to park across in the grass. Tables were getting full, but I was able to snag one for my crew. Bingo is 10 bucks for a night of fun. One packet was enough for me. You can always buy extra packets or extra sheets as you go. They have typical bar food and a pretty good selection of beer in can/bottle form and draft as well. It is also BYOB for food and drinks as well. It is a great time and cheap on top of that. I have had this spot bookmarked forever, but have never gone here until one of our friends suggested that we come here for Bingo in the Heights. Let me just preface this first by saying that driving in the Heights sucks. I wouldn't choose to drive here if I had the choice. But, I really wanted to see what this was all about. Do get here early before 7 pm to secure a parking spot and your table section. These fill up real fast. When you do enter the building, they will check your bags. It seems they won't allow certain drinks in from outside, such as bottled water or iced coffee drinks. But, I did see a number of tables bring in their own bottles of wine. A lot of tables also brought in several boxes of pizza from outside and dry snacks. I thought that was brilliant. If you're like our girls group, who didn't bring in pizza, snacks, or wine; there's food and drinks available for purchase at the venue. However, it's cash only. Conveniently, there's an ATM machine available right across from the food area. We ordered their cheeseburgers, chili cheese dogs, popcorn, and Topo Chico water. All were pretty good. But, when I do come next time, I'll just bring in food. Ok, down to the Bingo. The first thing you should do before anything else is to buy a set of bingo sheets per person for the night. It's $10 per bingo sheet set and only payable by cash. There are extra single bingo sheets that you can purchase throughout the bingo night if you want a better chance of winning. They are $1 per sheet, I think. Also, for an easier time getting through bingo, I would suggest getting the ink blotter that they sell for $3. It was worth it to me because I got to stamp my numbers quicker. Boy, the moderator calls out those bingo numbers fast. So, this particular bingo night was fun. Not only do you do the usual bingo where you try to get a row of numbers either straight or diagonally. But, there's also bingo where they have you try to get bingo numbers to create a shape, like a tree or a kite in different directions. There's also the hardest to get, and that's the whole cell of bingo numbers blacked out. So, depending on the number of people that yell BINGO, that determines what the payout will be. Obviously, the more people that yell BINGO for a particular sheet, the less the payout that you'll get. On this night, one person got $400 and another person got $600, since they each were the only ones to yell BINGO for their respective sheets. Lucky dogs. Lol. I wasn't lucky that night. But, it was still a fun activity to bond and have fun with my girlfriends. We all had a blast. I would say if you've never been here, give them a go. You might enjoy it. (Keep in mind it starts at 7:45pm) I hadn't been to BINGO Night at SPJST Lodge 88 since early last year, right before it got "big time" - thanks to countless Yelp reviews, the chron.com feature, and regular word of mouth. But last week? OH. MAH. GAH. We arrived on Beall Street shortly before 7: There was a mob outside the door; the once-empty field across the street was more packed than the State Fair; there was no streetside parking; we even spotted a firetruck and ambulance roll through. And the mob? Chaos. It looked like the outside of some of Houston's most popular nightclubs. Why? More than a dozen people were on their cellies, phoning friends and asking them to "get them in." Thing is, you could only get in (past the sole SPJST volunteer was working the door) if you had a friend inside that could come and get you and guarantee that they had a seat saved for you ... even though the sign on the door clearly states "no saving seats." They were at capacity with some 700 BINGO fanatics and freaks. I guess it was a good thing we couldn't get in. Who wants to split the pot with who-knows-how-many-people? I say wait and see if SPJST opens up for more BINGO nights in the week, arrive super early, or get your dobbin' fix elsewhere. Aside from this, from what I *remember*, BINGO at SPJST was always a blast. Only five dollars to play with one book, $1 popcorn, $5 pitchers of Shiner and other domestics, yummy burgers ... and it's BYOB for wine and liquor. They just ask that you purchase their mixers. Perfect for a casual date, mixer with friends/colleagues, birthdays, anniversaries (for us laid-back folks) or just a fun, cheap night on the town. There are some lookers there, unlike your grandmother's BINGO night, so you might want to iron your shirt - but don't try too hard like some of the trendy attention-whores. read more

BINGO! I got to shout that wonderful word on my first trip to SPJST lodge. People really do win! Ok ok, so it was only $15 ($100 split among 6 winners in one game), but I still won! I still got to yell Bingo and collect my cold hard cash. I was really skeptical when I heard Yelpers were going to Bingo. I wondered if there were portable oxygen machines and little trolls covering tables, but I saw neither! This Bingo hall is quite the fun young place. There were tons of 20, 30 and 40 somethings there. The place was crazy busy, and $6 pitchers of beer didn't hurt. When I arrived I was a bit puzzled by all the lines. I got there early (6:45pm) and saw several lines forming throughout the hall. There is a separate line for sodas, beer, early bingo cards, regular bingo cards, horse race cards, popcorn, food, and daubers. Nothing is sign posted, so just ask around. Get there early, mark a claim to a table and then get in line. Tables fill up fast, so get in there and find a spot before 7pm. There are 12 regular bingo games, 2 early bingo games, and the horse race game (part of the 12th regular game). The 12 regular games only cost you $5. I thought that was a great deal. 12 games for $5 so I decided to play 2 sheets for $10. I don't know how anyone can do more than two sheets. I wasn't drinking and I was seriously concentrating. I suggest one sheet if you plan to ever speak to anyone you are with. There is a break between game 6 and 7. People run to get more beer or for a bathroom break. Otherwise you won't have time because Bingo moves swiftly here. The funniest things all night are: *When someone incorrectly yells out Bingo, they get royally booed. *When they call O69, people actually ring cowbells! I'm not joking! *When someone yells out a correct Bingo and the whole crowd groans. People are serious about their Bingo here! No messing around! Get here before 7 to get parking. I absolutely love this place! I come here almost every month and even a few times a month because it's just so much fun. The crowd is pretty young and energetic and people come here to celebrate birthdays/anniversaries/etc. A pack of 10 bingo cards are $5 each, each additional card is $1. All proceeds go to their youth club, if I'm not mistaken. Let me warn you, this place gets crowded all the time, and it gets worse during the summer months. Lines are out to the street, so be sure to get there at least 20-15 min early. If it is crowded, they do have additional field parking across the street. They also sell food, beer, and liquor, but be sure to BRING CASH if you plan on buying here. They do have ATMs just in case. They serve hamburgers, hotdogs, nachos, desserts, like cookies, cake, and chick fil a sandwiches and nuggets. We went to some of the funnest humans wedding here... I didn't think it was possible for their coolness to totally reflect in their reception venue but, look at my photos - it did 100 percent. They had a prom theme and asked guests to dress the part. Their friends and family totally brought their A-game and blended in with their balloon centric decor. First impressions, plenty of parking and seating area - I think they fit 700ish people. It's a great place to kick it with friends and family or just casually meeting new people. 1. They stated food isnt served passed 8pm when the event starts at 7pm... yet on the website it says 8:30pm 2. Each Bingo card is different. The last in each "period" is called Cover All, where you are required to cover all the spots in the square. With numbers being called out one after another, it may be difficult to keep up. The winner said BINGO and on went the announcer saying which numbers weren't called under what letter. As he was going through, he stopped at 'I' and I realized I had a BINGO!! Coming from the very back of the room, I waved my hands, yelled bingo, and went to the front. As I was getting there they said "does anyone else have a bingo?" I yelled yes and continued to proceed to the front table, running and waving my arms. When I arrived, the table said Bingo is closed and then the announcer said Bingo is closed. I arrived to the table with my BINGO card in hand to be turned away during a cover all. Not only was this ridiculous, but the cover all before, the announcer went through EVERY letter of what number had NOT been called. He did not do it this time. How could you not give everyone time to look at their Bingo cards when going through a cover Allan's reviewing all of the numbers. Not only was this ridiculous in acceptance of a BINGO, but the people located at the front tables were extremely rude. This was my first time here and little did I know that Bingo games were so vicious. No one wanted accepted my BINGO even though I was waving my hands, yelling, and got to the table before the announcer closed the game. Honestly this makes me not want to come again. Everyone gets to play 12 games for $5 but you can increase your odds for the $500 prize round by buying extra bingo sheets for $1 each. Just look for the nice folks walking around during the first few games. Oh, and you get to keep your marker! W00t! I may just customize mine for good luck (anyone got a bedazzler?). The food was alright, I had a cheeseburger and shared nachos with friends. The burger bun was toasted yet cold to the touch...but I wasn't there for the food. Next time, I'll eat beforehand but still get the $6 pitcher of Shiner to share with my pals. Awesome deal in my book. Haha no offense to people in their late twenties that by no means is old. I am so glad I came with her her that day because it is so much fun! To my knowledge at least. TIPS: - COME EARLY around 5/5:30 maybe a little earlier if school is not in session. It gets crowded and they stop letting people in around 7. - Save seats! If you have a friend come early to save seats they usually let others in who are running late. Not everyone get get off work early. - If you actually want to engage in conversation with friends I would suggest not getting two boards. You get caught up in talking for a second then realized you've missed numbers. It's stressful catching up with two boards... Unless you're a pro. What to bring: -CASH! Have you ever wondered where all the 20 to thirty somethings are on Thursdays from 7-10pm?? Well, they are at Spjst Lodge trying to win some loot!!! The atmosphere is pretty fun, everybody is just there for a great time and the occassional opportunity to Yell "BINGO!!" or to giggle at the announcer when calling the number 69. I do recommend you get there early because parking seems to be an issue after 7. The crowd is very mixed, but I really think the younger crowd outnumbered the senior citizens by a few dozens. It is only $5 for the night and you get to play about 12 games. You can buy a marker for $1 and use it for about a year!! (haha, I still have it in my purse!). They also have a few games where you can pay an extra dollar and get an extra sheet. The prizes were mostly $100 (minus tax), there were two for $250 and one for $500 (details scape me right now, but you get the point!).The announcer was very funny (not sure it was on purpose), it definitely was entertaining. They have beer, which seems to be very popular. They have some food too. I had a cheeseburger and it was good. It cost $2.25, which is definitely cheap. I had what I believe to be a piece of a blueberry cake... or was it??! regardless of what it was, it was good! Holy H-E-Double Hockey Sticks. I almost had to throw it down on a very unfriendly lady because she called me a bitch (in a no cursing venue!) after I tried to take her seat while she was in line. It gets really thick and intense there with people fighting for empty seats! I still had a good time after everything settled but I'll be back after the summer...... It's just too crowded right now and the other Bingo players are too cranky from the humidty and heat. There's new rules and expectations now, especially with the summer crowds now that school's out. 1) Arrive at 6:40 and you can expect to park on the grass and you might not even find a seat. 2) They only let 700 people into the door before they start a line to get in. 3) Expect ppl to be nasty while they swat away eager patrons who are also looking for seats. The SPJST staff is SO NICE. They helped my group find a place to sit and brought us extra chairs! In general, they are nice and tolerant, period. Still left standing at 7PM without any seats? No worries, they make people give up their saved seats by 7:15. Got too over-zealous and bought too many Bingo games? Too bad. They don't buy them back and it's impossible to sell them. read more

The doors open up around 5:30pm every Thursday and they limit the center to 700 people. There's a parking lot in front of the building and a grass area to park at too. We got there around 5pm and there was already a line out the door! It just depends on the season, but it was HOT outside so we were all sweaty by the time we got inside. They check your bag as you enter the building. Bring CASH to buy food, drinks, and bingo sheets. You can bring outside food and drinks as long as it's not stuff they already sell at the center. They sell burgers, nachos, frito pies etc. There's a section for water, sodas, and alcohol. Bingo doesn't officially start until 7pm so during that time you can eat your food and mingle/socialize with friends! We had brought bentos and tapioca :D There's around 8 or 9 rounds of bingo with regular bingo, cover all, free style(depends on caller), etc. Each round will have different amounts of prize money. The last round is usually $600 as the prize! Bingo usually last til 9:30ish. It's a fun way to hang out with friends and get a chance to win money as well. This review is for Thursday night bingo games. This was a unique and unforgettable experience that was a solid 3.5 chill. Basically, for $6 bucks, it's the cheapest way to spend 5 hours of your life. I think the bingo hall opens at 5:15, but people were queueing far earlier than that. You'd associate bingo with senior citizens or learning your numbers in the second grade. Surprisingly, there is a LARGE range of ages here and all types. The hall has a ton of tables (5 or so columns, maybe 10 tables each, 6 chairs at each table), but you have to get there early and with your entire group as this place fills up. $5 will get you a bingo pad (10 sheets with 6 cards each) with the option of buying extra sheets for "early bird" games, an intermission "bonanza" game, and the "big" blackout game at the end ($600 game prize when I was there). $1 will get you a dauber, or can of soda, or popcorn, etc. And yes, they do have food and drinks here. Sodas, beers, juices, popcorn, hot dogs, candy. Everything else is BYOB (the cops won't let you bring in stuff they sell). People brought in wine, pizza, and cakes (this is a place to celebrate birthdays...) The actual games last from about 7:30-9:45. Regular bingos go pretty quickly (the ones that take 5 dots to win), as some lucky fool will get it in 4-5 numbers called. The regular game prizes are about $100 less the tax and $300 or $600 for the two blackout games. People get rowdy about corners, "O-69", and if someone erroneously or validly calls "Bingo!" (to which everyone delights in the caller saying, "That's a good bingo!") There are maybe four stalls in the women's restroom, and it's a fiasco trying to go at the one intermission. So - at long last - I finally made it to the infamous Heights Bingo Night at the Lodge. Luckily, I planned my visit with a few OGs that knew to get there early. Can you really beat $9 beer pitchers, BYOB (with no corkage fee) and of course, bingo. The crowd can be a bit of a nuisance, but good fun nonetheless. read more

Other than the distance if youre not in the Heights.. there's really no reason NOT to go. - buy in is 5 dollars. Prizes go from $100 to 600. - you can bring in your own food and liquor (except for beer) - burgers, nachos, popcorn and beer is all so cheap - it gets packed so its a great opportunity to meet people sitting around you! - starts at about 7 but get there by 5 to snag a good table!! read more
