I reached out to Spilled Milk Catering for a wedding quote and unfortunately the experience was disappointing from the beginning. While other catering companies responded within 1-2 business days, it took Spilled Milk nearly a week to get back to me. Once they did, they asked me to complete a questionnaire, which I did promptly. Sadly, I heard nothing for almost another week. After following up myself, they finally responded and informed me that they could not provide a quote unless I had already secured a venue. During that same week, we had spoken with 8 other catering companies who had no problem providing thoughtful proposals without needing our venue locked in. Spilled Milk's justification? "We are not a copy and paste catering company." The response came off more condescending than professional. If this is the level of communication and inflexibility they show before being hired, I can only imagine what it would be like working with them through the planning process. This whole interaction made my fiancé and I feel like our business was not worth their time. Spilled Milk catered our 50th wedding anniversary party on December 7th with over 70 people attending. The food was ample, delicious and attractively displayed and served according to schedule. Working with Amber and Jennifer before the event was a pleasure and they responded quite quickly to any of our questions. The serving staff was also outstanding, friendly and helpful. We hired SMC to cater a party at our home and couldn't have been happier with the service, the quality of the food, and the team they brought. Amber helped guide our selections for food, setup, and pre-party selections. On the event day, Jamie and his team did a great job of setting up, cleaning up, and running the party. The food quality was better than most high-end weddings I've attended, and I was happy to have a fridge full of leftovers that were thoughtfully packaged up for us. My daughter used Spilled Milk as her caterer for her wedding on May 18th and they were absolutely perfect! The appetizers were so tasty and beautifully presented, the dinner was fantastic, and the little desserts were scrumptious. Even the waitstaff was fantastic, very attentive, without being overbearing. Spilled Milk exceeded our expectations! I can't say enough good things about them. **2.5 Stars** Let me start by saying I've been a part of seven weddings and have attended probably well over twice that amount. I always keep a watchful eye on things especially considering my own was coming up. After reading raving reviews, we had SMC on our radar for our wedding. TASTING: Was wonderful and we were literally treated like royalty by Amit (the owner) & crew. Although, the other people's tasting before us ran late so our appointment was pushed about 45 minutes later - Amit emailed us 10 minutes prior to our appointment to reschedule, but we were already on our way from Fairfax, VA (about an hour out). So we gladly waited. Amit also promised us he would send us a cutting cake to try since we were far out and it would be free, which we thought was nice. He made it seem like we would be well taken care of. IN-BETWEEN PROCESS: We decided to go with SMC because of their great food concepts was on par with ours for a decent price. After, that's where things went south. Communication was sporadic (2-3 days average response, sometimes a week). I even asked Amit if he needed to have someone else speak with us that's fine, but he assured us he had everything under control. This didn't discourage me too much because I was planning this whole wedding myself while still working and gave myself plenty of time. Also considered that it was wedding season. Cool. But when I reached out multiple times about the free wedding cake sample, he told us to come back to the showroom to try it - when I brought up that during the tasting that he said he would deliver it to us since we were so far, he said his baker was busy that month (May/June), but that we could get it the next month. This never happened and as our day was approaching, I told him to forget it. Of course, when it came to the final payment, he was very responsive, within hours even ;) WEDDING DAY: After our wedding, I took the time to gather intel from all our guests, given that catering is the most expensive part of a wedding and wanted to ensure everyone was happy & our money was well spent. I gulped when I heard my greatest fear - not enough food was passed around. - COCKTAIL HOUR: We chose six hors d'oeuvres and were assured that each guest would be able to have 2 of each - very fair. EXCEPT none of our guests got to try more than one serving of maybe one or two apps out of the six total we had. Amit responded by saying he personally made sure of it, and that they had more than enough. I don't know what wedding he was watching, but def wasn't ours. Then said he had saved the rest for us (separate from the bridal plate set aside for us) in case we wanted more, but we never saw any of the leftovers. We had advised that all food should be served to guests, but if there were any leftovers after the fact, they were to be packed since we don't want anything to go to waste - to which he agreed. Yet we got nothing. And the bridal plate - my husband and I only received 5 out of the 6 hors d'oeuvres we chose. If more food was "saved" for us, why wouldn't you give us each type of appetizer? That logic makes no sense. - DINNER: We had buffet style. Our guests loved the short rib and mashed potatoes. But since the hors d'oeuvres were scarce, guests were starving at that point. The feedback from guests was that they tried going back for more, but it was quickly cleaned up. Amit responded by saying they saw no one going back up so they decided to clean up to make the area look nice. But yet again, no leftovers saved. Never have I encountered this at a buffet-style wedding - we paid for food so should serve til it runs out or it gets packed. I don't know bro, something doesn't sit right with me. I'm convinced they ran out of food and tried to make up an excuse. We felt jipped - it was upsetting to feel this way on our special day and after spending so much money. When I tried to tell my feedback to Amit, he denied everything & assured they did a great job. If that was the case I would definitely give credit where its due. I'm always honest and really try to take everything into account because you obviously can't please everyone, but the feedback we received from our different groups of guests was consistent across the board. So thankful for Spilled Milk Catering. We'd actually started out with another caterer highly recommended by the facility where our event (an evening cocktail) would be held. But that company was on-and-off-- answering messages, ghosting us for days, reappearing with proposals promised-- but never delivered! In a panic, just one week before our event I reached out and Amber replied almost immediately (after work hours!) She followed up with her proposal, made quick adjustments to fit our budget, responded to more questions over the weekend. She never dropped the ball! So I had great confidence things would work out day of and am so thankful I was right. Mrcko and the team arrived early. He made sure I met everyone so we would know who to turn to with any questions. As we got set up, the facility casually warned me another group had run out of food two nights earlier-- which launched me into a new panic. But Mrcko assured me we'd be ok and he was right! Everyone loved the food, the decorations matched everything perfectly. We were so happy with how everything turned out. Thanks to Amber, Steve, Mrcko, chef Carla and a sweetheart of a bartender (whose name I'm sorry I can't recall!) for a great event. And leftovers too. read more

I write this review primarily to help others who might be considering Spilled Milk for their once in a lifetime event such as a wedding or similar occasion. Please pay heed to all the one- or two-star reviews. I wish we had. Our experience is very similar to theirs. You shouldn't take that chance. Spilled Milk was recommended to us early in 2022 by our wedding planner for our daughter's wedding in October to serve a plated meal at the reception. The entire wedding was a fabulous affair, except for the Spilled Milk's disaster. Our Wedding Planner has since decided to drop them from her list of recommendations. We paid a deposit of over $6000 very early in the process. That was a mistake. SM doesn't do food tasting until you do. All communication with SM is handled by the owner, Amit. He is hard to reach, doesn't respond or doesn't provide answers. Tasting setup was nice, but Amit failed to communicate to the manager what we had chosen for tasting. The final approval of the menu didn't happen until ten days before the reception creating unnecessary anxiety. All that would have been tolerable if their service at the reception was moderately acceptable. It was not. They failed miserably. Selected appetizers were either not passed or passed poorly not reaching majority of guests. The first course at the sit-down dinner was okay. But it took SM over 40 minutes to serve the main course, and the servers were rude and in utter chaos trying to catch up. The meals (Spareribs, Salmon, Vegetarian plates) were of poor quality, served cold, without the dressings or appropriate sides. Bottom line, the food was not at all like what was promised. And here is a direct quote from a trusted friend who was one of our guests, "had this been at a restaurant, we would have sent the food back or walked away." Unfortunately, our 200+ guests couldn't walk away. The desert and coffee station were equally under supplied and mismanaged. And SM had no one in charge present to take responsibility. Later when approached about this experience by our Wedding Planner, SM did refund a very small amount. It doesn't help reshape our experience or change the bad taste it leaves. read more

I'm so glad our wedding planner recommended Spilled Milk Catering! We were nervous about being able to serve Indian food when booking Anderson House for our engagement party, but Amit and his team came to our rescue and served a unique brunch menu for our guests. Since we were planning a daytime event, we knew we wanted an eclectic mix of Indian and American dishes with several passed items as well as live stations. Amit sent over a long list with so many options for us to choose from - our parents were blown away with the creativity of the menu items. During the tasting, he was receptive to small changes my parents wanted to make and had a wide variety of things for us to sample. We had a hard time narrowing down our list because there were just so many great options. Amit was present during our final walk-through and had excellent suggestions for where different stations and bars should be placed at the venue. We wanted a mimosa bar and he was accommodating to our juice requests (mango/guava/etc). Most importantly, Amit was able to make Paan (a traditional Indian mouth-freshner) which my grandmother was delighted to have at our event! I worked with Spilled Milk for my September 2022 wedding. To start with the good, the staff at our wedding and the food served was great, but working with Spilled Milk was such a headache that I would not recommend them unless they make significant changes/improvements. I worked only with Amit and began the process about 18 months before our wedding. Initially, before the contract was signed, Amit was friendly and responsive. Around the time we needed to schedule our tasting in Spring 2022, communication went downhill and did not improve. Amit was impossible to get in touch with and was very unresponsive via email. If he did respond, he would very curtly address maybe one of several questions we would ask. He consistently made us feel like he was too busy to give us the time we deserved and frankly paid for, and he was particularly patronizing towards me (the bride) whenever I would ask questions either in person or via email. My primary issue centered around rentals. Amit did not come to the rental appointment and failed to provide pricing information for the items we chose after the appointment. Despite quoting $3000 in our initial contract, and confirming in writing that the rentals we chose were "about that price" in August, I found out one week before my wedding (when he sent the final contract several days late) that our rentals were in fact $7,800. We then had to scramble to choose other items. Amit did provide a small discount for his error, but the rentals were still almost double what he quoted us, which makes his initial quote feel dishonest, and he never reached out to apologize to us directly. His extremely poor communication and attitude made the process unnecessarily stressful and unpleasant. If I had known how large of a role the caterer played in the wedding process, I would not have chosen Spilled Milk and if I had it to do over I would choose another company. read more

Having never planned a wedding before, my initial call to Amit at Spilled Milk Catering was quite embarrassing. I had no idea what my budget or vision was...all I know is that I wanted inventive, delicious food that gave a nod to my husband and I's Asian heritage and my Yelpy upbringing. I talked to several caterers and they sent me the exact same bland menu with some type of lame-o Panda Express Vegetable Egg Roll and teriyaki chicken thrown in there. Pardon my French but HELLLL TO THE NAWWW! Amit's menu was well thought out and included a smattering of my favorite American and Asian dishes including a mini pork belly banh mi sandwich, spicy bulgogi tostados with kim chi slaw, tuna tartare in spicy wasabi cones (hello, The Source!), macaroni and cheese lollipops, a fall apart tender braised beef short rib with bacon blue cheese butter, and a grilled salmon marinated 48 hours in a lemongrass mixture. Not to mention a dessert bar of cream filled raspberry napoleons, milk and cookie shooters, and cappuccino brownie bites. Are you drooling already? Upon reading the menu, I clutched my heart in anticipation of giving up my first born Rumpelstiltskin style, but I was surprised to see that Spilled Milk's prices were very reasonable considering the amount of food that was given. To top it off, Amit offered a free tasting at our home (they are now conducted in their new sample kitchen in Gaithersburg) which was so amazing that we decided to book him the very next day. The rest is a blur but here are just a few highlights: *The menu went through a few different iterations and a few noteworthy items that did not make the final menu but was still pretty amazing include Palak Chaat, Gazpacho Shooters and Mini S'Mores Bars. *We decided to go with three signature cocktails and were really impressed with the amount of thought that went to each item right down to their homemade rosemary syrup for our vodka tonics, fresh lavender buds, and burnt orange peel garnishes. My Don Draper of a husband said that their version of an Old Fashioned was the best he ever had. *Amit was a breeze to work with and was able to give us tips on our venue, set up, and overall wedding coordination without a second blink. His staff was very friendly and professional. *My guests RAVED about the food. From their ultra modern presentation, to the taste, to the sheer amount that was given. No one left hungry that night including myself! The staff was even nice enough to pack the leftovers for us so Rob and I spent our every so sexy wedding night snacking on bulgogi and pork belly bits while he removed 200 bobby pins from my hair. *My Vietnamese father initially snubbed my idea of serving banh mi at our wedding. After all, to him it's a $2.50 sandwich that you can eat any old day. It ended up being one of his favorite items on the menu. How an Indian guy can improve on his beloved Vietnamese classic still boggles his mind but he was so happy that we served it. Did my wedding go perfectly as planned? No, and I'm sure it rarely does but I am so happy to have had Amit and the rest of Spilled Milk there. They made sure that all of the important things were executed properly and even at the end of the day I still considered everything perfect. If I had known how large of a role the caterer played in the wedding process, I would not have chosen Spilled Milk and if I had it to do over I would choose another company. read more

We tasted the food at Spilled Milk and it was delicious. We checked elsewhere and the food was great, too, but we ended up going with the other caterer. They turned out to be a disorganized disaster and gave us a price increase of ~$4000 five days before the wedding, including a lot of new venue-specific charges that should have been in the initial estimate and subsequent two or three quotes. We were over a barrel, but we'd worked with Heather during our tastings (and thought her awesome) so I called her. We spoke and I gave her the details of our wedding. Amit (the owner) called back. Spilled Milk, with three days to spare, could replicate our menu, get the right rentals, and give us peace of mind. One of the things that one runs into when planning a wedding is that a lot of companies don't have good customer service - they don't need to because people typically only have a big wedding once. Spilled Milk provided excellent customer service and were top notch professionals. I 100% endorse them and wish them the best. read more

Amit and his team, were always quick to respond to questions, always upfront about pricing, and really flexible with my schedule (which was SO appreciated as an out of town bride!) Although we pre-selected some of our options beforehand, Amit included an extra option that I had initially overlooked, and it ended up being one of our favorite things on the menu! The thoughtful gesture, amazing food and hospitality really made a strong impression on us and we signed our contract the very next day. PLANNING: Spilled Milk also went above and beyond by offering guidance and recommendations throughout the (sometimes overwhelming) planning process and I don't know what I would have done without them! I would share my thoughts on what I envisioned and they offered ideas and suggestions on how to make it come to life. From selecting tables, linens, chairs, etc to helping us determine and draw up the best layout for our venue and where to place the bar, to where to set up the stage, dance floor and guest tables (which was a huge, huge help) EVENT: The day itself was more than I could have imagined. The food was incredible (and we've heard from multiple guests that it was the best wedding meal they have ever had). The service was also on-point, every guest was greeted by a friendly face and their glasses were always full. Between the apps, the entrees and the cake there was always food available and guests were never left hungry. My husband and I even had a dedicated waitress who helped make sure we always had a drink, water and food in hand to make sure we were taken care of. Quite simply the worst experience I've ever had communicating with a vendor of any sort. The degree of rudeness is unmatched: by which I mean repeatedly *making* and then *missing* without explanation appointments by phone. To the extent they even bother responding, nothing is more infuriatingly rude than setting an appointment with a person and then not keeping it. And this in a vendor who you expect to pay tens of thousands of dollars to deliver a perfect, tightly-executed performance? Absolutely not. And note that this happened over the course of a two-plus month period - it is not simply that they were having a bad day. They are plainly utterly unresponsive, and, as I noted, what's worse, when they respond and *make an appointment with you* they still miss it *and do not even respond to acknowledge that they've blown you off*. This is rude beyond the pale, to treat people's time as worthless and to do so repeatedly. This is rude in *any context* - social, business, personal, professional, etc.; it is utterly unthinkable in this context, and to do so without notice. I will not be fooled again. We recently did a reception in our home for about 25 people. Spilled Milk made everything so easy. We worked with Amber who helped us plan a perfect menu of small bites and delicious desserts so everyone could have delicious food and still drink and converse easily. (BTW, be sure to order the mini-crab cakes.). Just as important (if not more so) we had two wonderful people here who took care of preparing and serving the food and making sure everyone's glasses were full, so we could just enjoy ourselves. They were communicative during the planning stages - from the initial calls, patience with rescheduling due to COVID, and fun tasting at their location. On the day of the event, the team not only brought the delicious food we tasted, the servers were efficient with passing appetizers and clearing tables, and every staff person (catering manager, servers, bartenders, A/V equipment) was professional and friendly. My husband and I regret using Spilled Milk as our caterer for our wedding. We chose Spilled Milk because of the positive reviews, excellent tasting, and we had attended a wedding catered by the company. We were assigned a point-person who was responsible for the event after we signed the contract and tried to contact her about 6 months prior to the wedding several times just to find out she had left the company (no one informed us of this). Then we were assigned Amit, the owner of the company. One of the biggest stresses of the planning process was that Amit was very difficult to get ahold of. We had to email him and call him several times before hearing any sort of response. When we went to the walk-through the month before the wedding, he said that our point-person who had left the company had understaffed us so we would have to hire more staff. Why he didn't tell us this one month leading up the wedding is beyond me. This created additional costs to us. His demeanor was also condescending during the walk-through as if it was our fault that we didn't plan for enough staff. Finally, his team forgot to bring the mixers for the signature cocktails, a detail we went over at length with him. This meant the drinks were very strong and the day-of coordinator had to run out to get more liquor for these drinks because the drinks were poured so strong. Amit also forgot to send us additional staff as he had promised in the walk-through, so there was a bottle-neck at the bar during the cocktail hour (due to low staffing and the fact that they didn't pre-mix the signature cocktails to pass out as they said they would). The food was so-so. It was certainly not a good as it was during the tasting. The pumpkin crusted salmon was supposed to be served with a cilantro and lime jasmine rice, and it tasted like basic Uncle Ben's rice. They were supposed to give each table cornbread, but they provided stale rolls. For the price we paid, the food wasn't up to par. read more

One polite staff member showed up in a timely fashion to set up our three hot app orders as directed, and exited before our guests arrived. Asian beef satay came with sturdy skewers, with the sauce and the mixed sesame seeds on the side. Mini vegetarian samosas and wild mushroom & goat cheese puff pastry kisses looked slightly different than expected, but the former were nicely crunchy without dipping sauce, and the latter were still tasty despite minimal browning. I've attended another event that Spilled Milk has catered, so I'm rounding up to account for the more definitive positive reaction. The brand new wife and I were planning a post-wedding party for approximately 100 of our family, friends/co-workers here in the local area. Our intent was to avoid a cliché reception with wedding cake, bouquet tossing, and garter flipping, instead to host a casual cocktail party with lots of good food and drink. Spilled Milk Catering came immediately to mind based on Kimberly S.'s glowing review after her very positive experience with them for her wedding reception. We'd also attended an event in the city that was catered by them and were impressed by their tasty food and its appealing presentation. About two months prior to the day of our party, I went to their website and filled out some information about our proposed event. Later that same day, I received a call from, Jessica, one of their sales associates. She was very personable and took the time to explain the services they offered, asking me a lot of questions along the way. After looking over their menu of food offerings we decided on a mix of hot and cold hors d'oeuvres, some to be passed and some served buffet style, and a couple of vegan selections. We also requested a bartender capable of making classic cocktails. On the day of the party, the caterers arrived a couple of hours in advance to set up. The team leader, Valerie, was incredibly thorough and a joy to work with. The rest of the team was friendly and efficient in moving about the room to serve food and take away dirty plates, cups, etc. Valerie and her team made it a very stress-free evening for us and took very good care of our guests. Our guests enjoyed the food and drink (and there was a lot of it!). All of the food was delicious and nicely presented. The Bulgogi Mini Tacos, Spicy Tuna Cones, and the vegan Flatbreads with Tomato Confit and Olive Tapenade, the vegan Mini Crispy Samosas, and the Cake Pops were very popular. My one minor critique was that the bartender that worked our party was not as experienced as we'd hoped. Admittedly, the wife and I are bit of cocktail snobs and have pretty high expectations with regards to what we drink and what we'd serve to our guests. However, both the bartender and Valerie were receptive to our desires, eager to learn new drinks, and worked effectively always with a smile on their faces to keep our guests and us happy with well made drinks. I recently hired Spilled Milk Catering to cater my girlfriend's daughters bat mitzvah and couldn't have been more impressed. Amit was incredibly knowledgeable about food and an amazing guy as well. He has a background in IT and it really shows in how well he has optimized the processes of his business. He really made the whole process super easy for me since as a man, I could care less about the little details of catering an event. I also really appreciated the way Amit was able to communicate promptly over email, text message, and/or phone call. You'd be surprised how many businesses are stuck with old communication processes. As for the food, well everyone was raving about it and our closest friends were NOT shy about asking for doggy bags! I just couldn't believe how fast those lamb lollipops flew off the trays. Same with the "bacon" wrapped scallops (Kosher of course!) The staff was very chic and mixed well with our crowd of starving artists, yuppies, and steel magnates. I should clarify that last part is a joke - anyone who lives in DC knows what a wide variety of people we have here! I really appreciated that I didn't have to talk down to anyone through the whole process. It's nice to find businesses that are run by people who aren't idiots. I would definitely recommend these guys for any event you might have. One piece of advice: Definitely ask to work with Amit since his partner "Raj" (if that is his real name) is more of an artist and definitely has a strong "head in the clouds" vibe. Spilled Milk recently catered our wedding and it was one of the best decisions we made. Amit is a breeze to work with - something that is hugely important when choosing wedding vendors. He was communicative, thoughtful and flexible. His entire team was awesome. The servers made sure my husband and I had drinks, food and desserts all night. The servers were friendly and prompt and everything was timed perfectly. The food. Our wedding guests are still raving about the food and we're still getting told how great the food was. Good food was something that was hugely important to me and I knew I had nothing to worry about once I had my tasting with Amit. We found Spilled Milk (SMC) through a friend referral and used them for our wedding reception in May 2012. Amit scheduled a tasting with us early in our engagement and was really flexible about customizing the menu to our tastes. He even set us up with the linens, china, and chairs we would need to accommodate all our guests. As far as food quality and taste we were delighted by the freshness of all the dishes. Many guests commented on how wonderful the food was. And our vegan friends were even able to pile their plates with various selections from the buffet. Highlights included: the moist pesto chicken, a delectable mango salsa, salmon with buttery tomato sauce, and a specialty non-alcoholic fruited lemonade. Fortunately we had a friend pack up a basket for us and we devoured a good portion of it once we reached our hotel. As far a food quality for the budget I definitely think SMC deserves 5 stars. Unfortunately, my day-of wedding coordinator said that their customer service and friendliness at the reception was severely lacking. One of my guests confided in me a few weeks later that the person serving the cake was just throwing slices on the plates and that she seemed very unhappy about having to serve cake. I was so disappointed to hear that the wait staff was difficult to work with, especially when the quality of the food was so wonderful. In a town as traditional and sometimes proper as DC is, Spilled Milk is a nice refreshing change. I luckily found Spilled Milk (SMC) through a referral (which makes me wonder actually, why are there not more great reviews for them on here?!) for a corporate event, and loved them so much I ended up using them 2 more times in the next month for business events. I dealt mostly with Amit (one of the owners) and Rachel who were stellar. I often (or always) came to Amit with several changes to the menu or numbers or furniture rentals (yep, they can do that for you too) often last minute and always with a hard line budget- and yet they were nothing but helpful and responsive! He also always kept up with communication, which was certainly appreciated. His staff, servers, and bartenders were also all extremely friendly and great at what they do. And the best part? The food! Each time the food was exactly what we wanted and went great with the event theme and was delicious to boot (the caprese skewers and turkey sliders-YUM). Bottom line is SMC is run by extremely professional and friendly people. They aren't stuffy and will work with you tirelessly to make your event exactly what you want! read more

We used Spilled Milk Catering for our wedding in April 2012 and were really happy with both their food and service. Our guests have been raving about the grilled cheese and tomato soup appetizers and the mac and cheese - months later! Amit was professional and put us as ease with the whole process. Our venue was not the easiest to work with - little power, no kitchen, outdoors - and it rained the day of our wedding, requiring us to change our set up at the last minute. Despite these challenges, Amit and his team were flexible and easy going about the last minute changes. And they made sure we had delicious and elegant food despite it all. The food on the day of the wedding was actually better than it was at the tasting. The Braised Short Rib was so tender that it fell apart the second the fork touched it and the Shrimp and Grits were some of the best I have ever eaten (and I lived in Charleston, S.C. for three years).
