Juicy Sean Rice Bowl
Ailun H.

Spiedo is a relatively new "Mediteranean-ish" restaurant that took over Chela's (RIP) within the past couple years. Surprisingly, a group of 5 of us was able to grab a table without much wait this past Sunday lunch. I thought it would have been packed since it's the weekend after the first full week of school. Fortunately not! CHOCOLATE TAHINI SHAKE - 6 The shake was really small, maybe an 8 oz cup, but it was incredibly thick and sweet, so any more than that would have been too much. It was creamy and good otherwise, but not sure if I'll pay that amount for the shake again. JUICY SEAN RICE BOWL - 19 My friend hyped up the Juicy Sean flatbread sandwich, but I was feeling a rice bowl, so I got that instead. It comes with several cubes of griddled walleye and maybe 1/3-1/2 of a ripe avocado, shredded napa cabbage, pickled onions (I didn't want any in mine this time), two different sauces that sat on top of a huge bed of yellow rice. I enjoyed the bowl with the Spiedo sauce! The walleye was lightly seasoned and prepared well. The avocado added a creamy texture to every bite. The napa cabbage was a nice vegetable option. The rice was so flavorful even on its own, but there was just too much rice compared to everything else. Overall, the bowl was very delicious and flavorful, not too heavy and made me feel good about eating it. It's just expensive for what it was, but I still loved it. We enjoyed our lunch at Spiedo, and I wouldn't mind coming back when I visit Ann Arbor again in the future.

Fast casual vibe but fresh, delicious food nonetheless. Definitely a solid lunch option. We arrived right when they opened and host/server advised that they do Mediterranean fusion, brought us to a table, and advised that we can order individually via a QR code. Our food came out pretty quickly and everything was really good. I had the al pastor wrap, my husband had the al pastor bowl, and we had a few sides/pita to share among 3 people. The farmer's cheese and party potatoes were a standout. They're also mindful of food allergies. Wouldn't hesitate to come back here.

Their juicy Sean bowl was my favorite. Came with a surprisingly large portion of fish and the sauces that came with it brought out all the flavors and evened out the slight dryness of the rice. The zhoug knight bowl was also tasty but still kinda dry even after adding the sauces. Their portions are huge. We were able to get another meal with all the leftovers!

I went here with friends today for the first time, it had been on my list for a while. It's a small space but it's larger than it looks - it extends towards the back and that's where the bathrooms are, too. I had the chicken sandwich, and it was very good, but IMO expensive - their flatbread sandwiches are like $15-17 each, with tasty ingredients like half-sour pickles. My friends got the walleye bowl, which was a generous portion, and the rice bowl with tofu, which is gluten-free, and also a large portion. My gluten-free friend also got the chocolate tahini drink, which looked delicious but is small (rather round, but short) - she said it was good and had a frosting-type consistency - and the "party potato" small plate, which she said was just okay. Despite the prices I would definitely come back here, since the food was delicious - the beef sandwich and also bowl looked good, too, plus the falafel burger.

I have seen so many different establishments pop in and out of this space, but Spiedo has got to be my favorite one! Painted in various BOLD colors, Spiedo genuinely looks like what the inside of my brain looks like...I imagine! They have both a front and back seating area, with plenty of seating for you to dine in if you'd like, but it's also a great place to grab and go as well. Spiedo is definitely more of a casual vibe, but they have both Mediterranean-style wraps and bowls for you to enjoy and it's like a completely different level of flavor than I have previously experienced from any other Mediterranean-style restaurant, so Spiedo is 10000000% worth a try! My friend and I shared the roasted beets to start and then I got the Rise of the Johnson sandwich and both were so DIVINE! I am dying to try the rest of the menu! The flavor combination of both the beets and my sandwich were so complex and diverse and I really really loved it! It was a party in my mouth, just like the space of Spiedo was a party for my mind! I had a great time here and will heartily recommend Spiedo to everyone who is looking for a quick, fast casual type of meal in Ann Arbor!

For lunch, I enjoyed the Zhog Knight bowl, perfectly seasoned. Opted for pick-up, ready in just 20 minutes. The combination of rice, onions, and special sauce was truly delightful.

Went to Spiedo for a casual dinner - you order off a QR code and the food was extremely quick. Service is wonderful despite not having a "traditional waitstaff." Standouts were the appetizers/sides - would recommend the eggplant and the potatoes. The chocolate tahini shake was a great complement to the meal. The zhoug knight wrap was tasty when the spicy zhoug sauce was added on the side! Overall a wonderful meal and would return to try other options

SO DELICIOUS!!! We've been trying to go for some time and it lives up to the high ratings x 2!! I went with a friend and had the Zhoug Knight chicken rice bowl- I'm a rice snob and this rice is SO good! Also, all the sauces come in the side so you can adjust the spice and sauce level to whatever you prefer. My friend enjoyed the Tofu Mafia bowl and really loved her Chocolate Tahini drink. YUM! Note the building is a pink color and all the parking is street (pay) parking in the middle of Ann Arbor. It's a small restaurant but we came early enough that finding seats were not an issue. I went back a second time with my hubby just recently. We started off with the Lackluster Soup (chicken, lemon, dill) which my hubby loved! Very flavorful, it was a thicker consistency (I prefer thinner soups) but I still liked it overall. I got the Return of the Smash rice bowl, it had Spicy Pork, kimchi, cabbage and pickled onions- delicious!! My hubby got the Juicy Sean wrap and loved it also! The portion sizes are pretty big, I think most people will be very satisfied. Spiedo is now my favorite restaurant in Ann Arbor and I can't wait to go back and try more items!

I was amazed to see how this place was so highly rated. I was only in town for a couple days, so we wanted to try something we couldn't get back home. This place definitely is an interesting take on Middle Eastern food! They had some Asian flavors in their dishes (Thai/Vietnamese-Inspired) and I was pleasantly pleased by how good everything tasted. Farmer's Cheese ($8) - Very decadent! It kind of reminded me of the flavor of mozzarella, but with the texture of ricotta/cottage cheese. Definitely meant to be shared. Not sure I would order this again, but I'm glad I got to try it. Tofu Mafia Bowl ($15) - I was so curious to see how the Asian flavors would play out with this tofu bowl. It surprisingly all tasted really good together. The pickled carrots were refreshing. It was a great base to eat with the other sauces that they offer. Juicy Sean Flatbread Sandwich ($18) - We had to try the walleyed fish! And it did not disappoint. The texture was firm but soft, so it held it's shape. It was very surprising and I loved it. The creamy white sauce was also soo good. Highly recommend! Charred Eggplant ($8) - Absolutely loved this. It was like a deconstructed baba ganoush. The tahini sauce was so good and I loved every bit of it. I highly recommend this place if you are visiting and looking for something new to try!

Visiting Ann Arbor we found this gem on Yelp after a a long day of Michigan football. My family was a bit uncertain when we arrived, perusing the menu board with sparse details. The host guided us with the basics as we waited a few mins for a table to become available. Once we had a deeper look at the online menu with images of our food options, we all felt a bit more comfy about making our selections. I was bowled over by the tofu mafia flatbread/wrap. Turned out my 3 dining mates all ordered the Zhoug knight (two flatbreads and one as a bowl). They were equally pleased with their selections. We will definitely return next time we are in town. A great find!

This place made our Sunday evening, such yummy Mediterranean food with think out of box approach aka fusion, friendly service and beautiful interior.. as a Turkish who appreciates a good Mediterranean cuisine, appreciate that the spices were chosen so wisely and all the dishes were definitely fine tuned for a great balance in the palate.. Will definitely come back..

From the street bright green and pink catches your eye. Housed in a space that used to be a different restaurant decades ago, they've certainly painted the building in a way that you can't walk past without noticing it. The staff is kind and knowledgeable, able to answer questions about both flavor and composition of each dish, and make recommendations based on what we were interested in. While denoted as Mediterranean their dishes are a modern twist across cultural flavors and techniques. Between my friend and I we split: Charred cabbage $8: tahini ranch, pomegranate molasses, herbs, pistachio dukkah. What an unexpected combination of flavors! The crispness and slight char on the cabbage leaves mingled with the tangy molasses and crunch of pistachio made for a perfect bite. Cauliflower $8: muhammara, oil cured olive, orange, almond. Toasted cauliflower over a dip of roasted red pepper, walnut and pomegranate molasses--zingy slightly spicy, topped with almond slivers and a sprinkle of parsley. Yum! RIP Smash $15: spit roasted spicy pork, calabrian kimchi, turkish oregano. This is a wrap sandwich composed of house-made flatbread, strips of pork, pork belly, fermented pickled cabbage, lettuce, red onion. A flavor explosion in my mouth. The flatbread was soft and warm but thick enough to hold the sandwich together. Served with a side of spiedo sauce made of tahini and yogurt. There is a vegan spiedo sauce made of cashew nuts as well. What a wonderful meal--I think from the outside it's quite easy to think this a fast casual spot and certainly the decor is quite simple, but the focus is squarely on the food and they really showcase an excellent creativity and hospitality. And for that I give them a big smile and thanks for sharing an amazing experience with us!

I met up with my foodie friend and fellow Elite Tiffany H at Spiedo recently for lunch and really enjoyed the experience! Spiedo is the sister restaurant to Takoi in Detroit, which has been on my list for ages. Luckily I got a taste of chef Michael Goldberg's food at this casual spot near the heart of downtown Ann Arbor. The space is super bright and cozy with limited seating. I was greeted right away by George (I think his name is George) who was really friendly and very helpful. He gave me the rundown of the menu and ordering process (order via QR code at your table or at the register) and let me know some fan favorites. The menu consists of rice bowls, flatbreads (wraps made with roti), and a handful of sides. I was really intrigued by the flavor and ingredient combinations, like walleye with a Thai fish sauce, pork with calabrian kimchi, charred carrots with tahini ranch... you get the idea. Super interesting and fun for me as we don't have a ton of this type of creativity happening foodwise in Grand Rapids where I live. (Spiedo, please come to GR?) I went with the Rip Smash (or is it RIP Smash?), with the roasted pork and calabrian kimchi. I debated on a side but I wanted to save some room for more Ann Arbor food adventures. Tiffany got the Juicy Sean walleye as a rice bowl and the charred carrots. Our food came out pretty quickly and looked nice, especially the carrots - the plating was that of a 5 star restaurant. The flatbread was super tasty and I loved that the roti had great flavor. There were bits of crispy pork that I really enjoyed although none of it was spicy. The crunch of the kimchi and cabbage was really nice, although I do kind of wish it was saucier (but I'm big sauce person). Tiffany loved her meal too and commented on how good the rice was, which seems like a simple thing but I find that rice can oftentimes be super bland. I loved this experience, it was super chill, delicious, and left me wanting more. I'll be back!

Shoutout to my friend and fellow foodie Tiffany for always being down to try a new spot together!…read moreWe did a double date at El Harissa recently and it's my favorite kind of spot - welcoming and warm, with delicious food, and kind, patient employees. The cafe is a few tables inside of the market/deli, with a lot of takeout happening but I love that they offer dining in as they heat everything up for you and it's all presented very nicely. We ordered a ton of things: harissa dip, hummus, pita, spice roasted cauliflower, tabbouleh, lasagne verde, chicken tagine, and gelato. I loved that the menu indicates which menu items have a smaller carbon footprint - and we happened to be dining there on Earth Day! The food was all flavorful and the perfect temperature, which I appreciated. My favorites were the harissa dip, tabbouleh, and the lasagne verde. The chicken tagine was very good, and we enjoyed the leftovers the next day. The spice roasted cauliflower left us wanting it to be a bit more crispy, but it was a nice side. The gelato is delicious - it's made by Palazzolo's but El Harissa provides them with the unique ingredients for their specialty flavors. They were out of some but we got to sample several. We ended up with the roasted pistachio gelato and the apricot peach cardamom. The texture of the gelato was perfectly creamy and the flavors were strong. The market has lots of great items to buy: chips, tunisian olive wood pieces, spices, etc. I'm so glad we sought out this spot and can't wait to get more of their food!

First time going to Palm Palace. My colleagues rave about it, so I wanted to try it. Let me say,…read morethe food is *exceptional.* But, I went right around 5pm with my young son. We are black. We stood in the lobby for some time before three other groups showed up: a white couple, a white woman with her toddler, and a white couple with a baby. Eventually, the hostess appeared, and looking only toward the white patrons, asked how many were in each party. Never asked me. I volunteered that there were two of us. She said it wld be 10 min. When she returned, she motioned to the white woman and toddler, and proceeded to seat them. When she returned, she told the white couple with the baby to follow her. I said, "actually, we were ahead of them, " which she ignored. Her behavior was so offensive that even the white couple volunteered, "she was ahead of us." Reluctantly, she told all of us to follow. She seated all of us at our tables. I asked if they had crayons or paper for kids. She rolled her eyes and pretended not to understand English. Note that she addressed us in English in the lobby. I'll think twice about going back. Without a doubt, the food is amazing. But I don't want to subject my kid to that kind of abuse.
