I did take out orders... I love their egg wrap and potatoes thing is my favorite... love the chili sauce. It is small restaurant.

I was in Indonesia with Eric R. 8 years ago, and though I took a cooking class there, I do not make Indonesian in my regular rotation. When I saw Steve D.'s review, I bookmarked Spicy One and knew I had to try it soon! Today, I did a day trip to KC with my friends Elisa O. who had never eaten Indonesian food, and Grace L. who is a fan. All of us love spicy food too. We each ordered a lot of stuff, and I over-ordered specifically to make sure Eric R. got to try some because he loves Indonesian food too. I ordered Gado Gado "a little sweet and a lot spicy," beef rendang, and chicken satay. Grace and Elisa both ordered the beef egg wrap appetizer and beef rendang. They shared their appetizers with me, which was so nice. I can see why this is the first thing on the menu and also listed as available for party tray purchase. This was like a spring roll meets dumpling, with ground beef, onion, green onion, and egg stuffed inside. It was accompanied with a delightfully spicy sauce and a side of pickles. The rendang came out, and while this was Eric R.'s request, I still ate a few bites to try it. It was SO delicious! I can see why Elisa and Grace licked their plates clean! I put it aside to save for him in a to go box because I am a really caring wife. Then I got the satay next. I shared the skewers with my friends, and they were accompanied by warm rice cakes coated in delicious peanut sauce and sprinkled with fried shallot. Everything about this plate was delectable. I took the chicken off the remaining skewers and put it with the rice cakes in a to go box for Eric R. My gado gado came last, which was confusing to me because I thought it was a salad. I have made gado gado (in the cooking class in Indonesia and at home since) but this was quite different. I am used to hard boiled eggs, tofu, and veggies to dip into a peanut sauce. This was what Grace called a "warm salad." It was like a stir fry in a way, cabbage, spinach, bean sprouts, fried tofu, rice cakes, mixed up with egg and peanut sauce and sweet soy sauce, all mixed together like a happy family. It was so delicious, but by then I was SO full. I got my third to go container filled, and Elisa kindly gave me one beef egg wrap to share with Eric R. too! In fact, Elisa liked the egg wraps so much that she placed another order to share them with her boyfriend when we got back to Manhattan! We chatted with all of the staff. The owner told us she would be willing to freeze the rendang and ship it to us! Yes please! Another chef came from the back to let us try vegetable fritters, which reminded me of pakoras in Indian cuisine. This place was awesome and I enjoyed every bite of my food. I do wish I had asked about the turkey legs on the menu because that is really...unexpected!

I enjoyed my opening day lunch experience, which included a unique menu, first rate service and a delicious meal. The ketoprak ($12.00) was served 17 minutes after I ordered at the counter, where the service was polite, professional and accommodative, but a little slow at the register. I requested a medium spice level and it had just the right amount of heat for me. I also liked the delicious peanut garlic sauce and the beautiful presentation. Unfortunately, I was focused on the menus prominently located in front of the registers (which were limited menus) and did not notice the full menu on the wall to my left. I would have ordered a different dish if I had known. The dining area consisted mainly of booths, with no background music. The prces seemed somewhat high, with no specials. Overall, I'm thinking 3.5 stars and rounding up.

Beef Curry Rendang, tumeric rice, fried rice, and fish & shrimp siomay

Got takeout for dinner. The beef rendang was tough and dry and could use some more flavor. However, the turmeric rice was good. The chicken fried rice was also good but a little mushy. The fish & shrimp siomay with sweet soy sauce and peanut sauce was alright, but nothing too special.

We went here because we thought it was a crazy combo. Turkey Legs and Indonesian food? Sounds great. I don't know if that's a normal combo or not but it sounded cool. I personally didn't like my food very much or very much of my friends' food. I thought the sauce that was on the Turkey leg was really good but I don't dig huge chunks of meat so I couldn't really tuck in on the Turkey. (That's a personal thing and it doesn't count towards my 3/5 star rating) I really liked the potato croquettes. I'd never heard them cooked in this style before and they were super good. Everything else iI had was not for me. Sauces (besides the Turkey leg) were pretty off-putting. My satay had a gelatinous textured gravy on it that I ended up giving all away. Last but not least, I REALLY liked the ladies working. They were friendly, gave suggestions, and mom-ed us a bit in a good way. All in all, I don't regret going. I probably won't go here again unless someone else wants to go.

Gado Gado (Indonesian salad with peanut sauce)

I don't know much about Indonesian food, but I had heard good things about Spicy One and like to try new things. If you're in the same boat and want to try something new, I'd say go for it! Here's a little bit about the menu: Most popular items: - Mie goreng: a stir fried noodle dish with crunchy bits on top and a ramen noodle -like texture. It's a friendly introduction to Indonesian food, as is its cousin, nasi goreng (the same thing but with rice). Bihun goreng is another play on this dish; it substitutes thin rice noodles for the wheat noodles in mie goreng. - Padang Satay: this is the dish that looks like chicken satay in many of the photos. It's covered in peanut sauce and paired with soft rice cakes on the side (the white cubes that look like marshmallows). - Rendang Spicy Beef Curry: Rendang is a dish, usually made with beef, where meat is slowly cooked in a broth made with many different spices. The end result is more braised beef than curry, as shown in the review photos. It's served with coconut-flavored rice and steamed vegetables. - Honeycomb Cake: This is a subtly sweet rice cake not unlike mochi, but with a texture that's simultaneously stickier and more fluffy. I also tried the croquettes, the gado gado (Indonesian peanut sauce salad), and the oxtail soup. The gado gado was the most unique dish I tried--the only thing I could compare it to is Korea's kong guk soo, or soybean soup. It was slightly spicy, with lots of vegetables, and a gritty peanut dressing. On all notes, the flavors were interesting and the right elements were there. Although there were details to the dishes that I wish were stronger--the satay was on the dry side, the croquettes had a fairly thick coating, and the rendang was tough in places, it's great to see new cuisine coming into the area, and I enjoyed trying SpicyOne.

Came here with my family, there weren't a ton of people and I just don't understand why! I had never had Indonesian food before but we decided to give it a shot. One thing I'm always nervous about is if a place is toddler friendly. Spicy One is definitely somewhere I felt comfortable bringing one. Small and family owned I believe, there were only 2 people working and possibly 1 cooking. The food was fresh and with only 1 person cooking it took a little longer to get food out, but not terribly long! Thankfully she got the kids fried rice out first so my son was busy with that! The food was so flavorful and delicious! I tried a bit of everything we got and it was all good. I got the fried noodles, which is amazing but my son ended up eating almost all of my dish! One thing I was surprised at was the amount of shrimp I got, usually shrimp dishes don't come with many pieces. We always got the coconut drink, which was sweet, but I really liked it. Can't wait to go back!

Delicious and authentic Indonesian cuisine, prepared to order by the owner/chef. She made an excellent laksa, just like I had in Singapore. Attractive and comfortable dining area. Highly recommend.

Beef Curry Rendang

First visit and will be back. Chef owned and operated family business. Very friendly and helpful with menu. Beef curry dish was outstanding. Side veggies were delicious and perfectly cooked. Rice was amazing. I got green chiles on side which were spicy but not crazy spicy and quite flavorful. I was not familiar with Indonesian food so this was really a fun culinary adventure and I am a fan now! I want to come back and try many more dishes. Check it out and support these local family owned businesses!

Lovely service and great food! First of all, I'm no expert in Indonesian cuisine, nor had I ever tried it before visiting Spicy One. Still, I went with a friend and we found the food very tasty! The stir-fried noodles were surprisingly sweet but went well with the salty chicken curry we ordered! Overall, the dishes by themselves and paired together were good! I think the noodles might've been a little too sweet had we not also ordered the curry. Nothing was over or undercooked and, thus, I have no complaints! What's more, the ladies working were incredibly sweet and could tell it was our first time trying Indonesian cuisine:) they were kind and helpful, making our experience comfortable. Lastly, the honeycomb cake was super good! they top the semi-sweet cake with chocolate sauce(?) and condensed milk to add a little extra sweetness and it was the perfect chewy treat to end our meal:)

Absolutely loved this place. The fact that I have tried rendang curry in Indonesia and. Malaysia, this one was pretty close! Definitely recommended

FIRST time ever having Indonesian food and had to get my food to go BUT my wait was minimal and food was hot. I ordered egg wraps as an appetizer and a smoked Turkey leg meal that came with rice and a vegetable medley of carrots and cabbage DELICIOUS when I walked in early evening the the decor was beautiful and the young lady that helped me was magnificent side note: I work from home so the portions and price allowed me to have dinner tonight and lunch tomorrow

I am a polyglot white guy who is fluent in Indonesian and Malay (I have been studying Austronesian…read morelanguages and culture for many years), and I have been looking for a place that serves Indonesian food in Kansas City for quite some time! You don't find anything like this Kansas City. It is nothing like Chinese or Mexican or Thai. The flavors are extreme. You will have to be patient, so bring a friend to chat with and set aside 30 minutes to sip your drink and talk about the weather. Ask for refills. Yes, the refills will come if you ask. If you made anything like this at home it would take hours, but they don't take hours. Thirty minutes tops. It is quite obvious that everything here is made from scratch (it would have to be). The seating area is small and cozy. It is very quiet. A great place to relax. The Es Teller is wonderful. I had the Beef Rendang-it came with a tiny cup of hot green sauce that is very potent. The food portions seem small, but a little food goes along way. You won't leave hungry. It would be quite a loss if this place went out of business-one would normally have to go to Chicago or Washington DC for something like this.

Price reasonable for the portion served with friendly service…read more Sadly I could not say the food is authentic. It felt like fusion Mexican food dressed up as Indonesian. The chicken rendang had some strange tomato type sauce and the beef rendang like some microwave prepackaged sauce.
