Trying to figure out the 4.3 rating given my limited experience. Went there on a Thursday evening. It was clear that the air-conditioning was broken in the restaurant and the temperature inside was probably pushing 80°. The restaurant seemed understaffed. Took a seat at the bar and reviewed a wonderful traditional menu with hard to find dishes and other more Americanized restaurants. See picture. It has been a while since we tried this place last time. We decided to give it another try but It was disappointing overall. We ordered the takeout and were glad we did not dine in..... The inside of restaurant was not neat, with trash on the floor when we came to pick up our food. I would not want to dine in such an environment for sure. The food was mediocre in general, too greasy and too salty. We tried 4 dishes. They all tasted the same. And all 4 were overcooked, no matter whether it was meat or fish or vegetable. This place is so good! They have the cumin lamb I've been chasing ever since I had it in this one restaurant one time - like I've found it elsewhere but it just wasn't the same, but here it is! Service is not bad. But their food is poor quality. I spend over $100 here, it does not worth the money. I would rather spend it at Macdonald. I ordered delivery from here many times, and this the first time I dine in. The Meicai pork is so hard, I feel like I am chewing a piece of wood. I think they steamed it too long. The waitress was incredibly welcoming and even entertaining at times, recommending us wonderful dishes. The food was very good and reminiscent of home cooked Chinese food. Ever since moving from Jersey been looking for an authentic Hunan place and this one is probably the best I've had yet. Their homemade bean curd is phenomenal compared to the store bought one. - Stir fry smoked pork with bean curd: Must have, the bean curd with the pork is amazing. - Pork intestines with green pepper: Well done pork intestines is hard to find and when stir fry with spicy peppers is to die for. - Braised pork belly: sucker for big chunks of pork belly and taste was spot on. read more

I heard Spicy Hunan Kitchen is owned by the same owner of Sei Bar in Wakefield MA. Given the great experience and authentic Hunan food I had with Sei Bar, I stopped by and gave a try this one. It turns out this one actually provides high-quality Chinese food with an extra spicy taste. As a big fan of authentic Chinese food and a regular to Sei Bar, I can still tell there is a tiny difference between these two. I actually prefer the taste at Sei Bar. If you are a big fan of spicy Chinese food, have a try on Grilled Pepper with Preserved Duck Eggs, Steamed Fish Fillet with Hot Pepper, and Pork Intestine with Green Pepper. If you are not good with spicy, scallion pancakes and Peking ravioli are recommended, but you may not find too many choices since most of the food is really hot. read more

After getting back from vacation, I stopped in for sitdown dinner at Spicy Hunan Kitchen in Woburn. They serve Chinese cuisine with a focus on spicy and Hunan special dishes as well as a full sushi menu too, moderate prices here. They have a full bar and lounge in front and table seating towards the back end. The place was not too busy midweek, so I was seated at the booth. I looked over the menu and it took a bit to decide. I started out with Hot & Sour Soup ($4.75 plus tax), which had soft tofu, bamboo, preserved mushroom, red chili, egg in a very spicy broth. It's a good thing I was brought over a big bottle of cold water, which I can refill my own glass as needed. Next, the Pineapple Fried Rice ($13 plus tax) was a good portion of soft fried rice with a mix of sliced chicken, shrimp, egg, onions, peas, sprouts, Curry powder and pineapple chunks. The General Gao's Tofu ($15 plus tax) was a good portion of crispy tofu squares smothered in a sweet Gao's sauce with red chili peppers, and a side of steamed fresh vegetables (broccoli, carrot, celery, cabbage). I finished half my food and had the rest boxed to go. The check before tip was $35.04. The food I had was spicy and sweet and very filling to eat. The service was good as my food was brought out quickly. read more

I love their Hunan dishes. portion is sizable and service is fast and attending. The interior decor is nice and modern. There is a huge parking lot across the street for free. I have been there three times and glad to see they are getting more customers. My only complaint is the price for white rice. Rice is unavoidable for these salty and spicy hunan dishes. read more

This new place has the chef and staff from Sei bar in Wakefield. It is easily the most authentic and delicious Hunan restaurant in the greater Boston area. Their price is very reasonable too. The waitress who served me and my friends on the night of Nov 26 was extremely Rude and insulting. My friends and I (4 people) went to the restaurant because we liked the foods. But we never expected that we encountered a Horrible Waitress! We placed our order with the waitress around 6.30pm. We never expected that we would sat there alone more than 1 hour and no waitress came back. We all starving and feel cold. No one ever gave us water. Our neighbor tables who came later than us already got their foods and drinks while we had nothing. On 7.30pm, we asked the waitress twice for the reason. Her answer in the first time was to ask us if we had placed the order because she couldn't it. (???) We were SO surprised and told her we placed the order One hour ago. She heard that and left. My friend and I saw her picked up a small paper which very like our order. She read the paper and typed in something on the computer. She came back but she never mentioned/apologize for forgetting placing order for us. On the contrary, she only made rediculous excuses. She said the only reason was because the restaurant too busy......Around 8:40pm, She Threaten to cancel my order and asked us get out if we didn't want to wait extra long time (after we have waited more than 1 hour for dinner). She gave us stink eyes, roll her eyes, very impatiently, angry and yelled at us. This is Very Unacceptable and insulting. Garbage waitress! At that time, we couldn't find the manager or any person who in charge to talk to. As an old customer, I have to say foods there were great but we would never back to the restaurant because the horrible and rude woman. read more

The food here is fairly authentic Hunan, quite spicy. The layout is awkward but if you give this place a chance it's quite worth it.

Decent food, not so great service. We arrived over an hour before closing and the waitress refused to serve us tea because they were "about to close". Not sure how we were able to order food but not tea, but whatever. We ordered some lamb with cumin and the dish was so cold it tasted like it just came out of the fridge. The flavor was good but in the middle of the winter I would rather have warm lamb! The waitress told us this was "normal" for this dish. I've eaten at so many other Chinese restaurants with the exact same dish that was not cold. Probably won't return despite the food otherwise being pretty good. We had a better experience at the associated Sei Bar so will probably go there instead. read more
