Al Madina - Interior

Al Madina

North Inner City

It is a bit amusing to me that my first meal in Dublin should not be an old-fashioned Irish stew or…read morebangers & mash in a pub but instead some standard home-style Indian food in a relatively empty but clean restaurant near that inexplicable Millennium Spire, something they advertise heavily on their menu cover. I can understand why since it would be hard to seek out this place otherwise. In full disclosure, I was in a post-jet-lag haze and thought I was going to the other Madina across O'Connell, the one praised on Yelp, but it turned out this is a pretty new place just getting established since it was getting a lot of passing glances but no takers. OK I'll give it a try. I have to admit it was not a promising start with the € 3.95 Tandoori Chicken Leg, which was a bit dry and not even covered in the requisite tumeric and cayenne to give it the rich red color I was expecting. It came with a side salad and a strange little dollop of mayo and ketchup as if to appease local tastes I'm assuming (see photo). Chicken is chicken, and I was tired and famished, so it was good enough. It just wasn't anything that thrilled me in the least. Much better was the next dish that arrived, the € 5.96 Bhindi Bhaji, an okra dish with plenty of spices though I'm not sure what the difference is between bhaji and masala (see photo). I assume it's a regional variation as this had a more earthy and less tomato-based flavor. It had plenty of fresh cilantro and scallions on top, and it was a nice contrast. The Boiled Rice was an extra € 2.50, though you need it to sop up the homemade sauce. Diners were beginning to trickle in as I was finishing which was just as well as they had staff who were just shooting the breeze otherwise. Not the owner though as he was on me like ham on rye bringing a whole new level to attentive service. There are lots of Indian options in Dublin, but if you happen to be near the pointless pointy thing, it's worth a visit for lunch at least. FOOD - 3 stars...a lackluster tandoori chicken followed by a much better okra dish balances out my rating here AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...clean and empty SERVICE - 4 stars...attentive and (I think) appreciative of the business TOTAL - 3 stars...may improve over time, worth a try

Temple Bar

What? Hold on a second! A kebab shop at 4am on a Sunday morning with polite staff and nice food?…read more I, like most Dubliners, tend to ignore anything in the Temple Bar area unless I am familiar with it or have been told good things about it. Cos as you might imagine Temple Bar is a tinchy tiny little bit of a TOURIST TRAP and last time I checked, I wasn't a tourist. (Although try telling those Brazilian girls waving Irish Stew menus in my face in Temple Bar Square.) I fell out of the Dragon. It was nearly 4am. Gay Charlies was JAMMERS. My friend turned and said "Let's go to Mezza!".... Sooo glad I did..... I got the mixed meat kebab meal. Before that I got a friendly "hello, how are you, what can I get you?" This guy actually said to me "What salad and sauces would you like in your kebab?" That little bit of extra attention to detail and friendly chat really doesn't take much effort at all and makes such a huge difference. The place was spotless (even the toilets!!!! Which at 4am on a Saturday night is a miracle). All the staff were friendly including the security guard who went to get me some salt sachets for my chips. The kebab was fab. Everything from the meat, to the salad to the sauce to the beautiful freshly baked bread. Great kick off the chilli sauce too. Chips were actually pretty good in comparison to to a lot of kebab places. Zaytoon you can go and take a a running jump into the Liffey and stay there with your rude staff, average food and blatent disregard for your customers. Viva la Mezza!

I ALWAYS begin with behari kebab which is served with a yoghurt as it is quite spicey.. with a side of freshly prepared cucumbers and side salad. This is simply delicious, if you aren't into spicey food there is other options too so don't worry too much!! For a main course, I usually opt for chicken tikka masala as it is a classic and it is simply DELICIOUS! The dishes are served in beautiful red pots with lids, so there is no rush or worry on your food going cold as the pots prevent it from doing so! If you are booking, I do reccomend you to ask for a window seat as it is the most beautiful view ever- Clontarf and if you're really lucky you could be watching the local boats of Clontarf Yacht and Boat Club out sailing in their dinghies or cruisers. So, if you're coming from town you can hop on the 130 from Lower Abbey Street and it will stop right outisde Kinara Restaurant. I guarantee, once you dine here you will want to go back straight away as the food is AH-MAY-ZING! The staff are so friendly and polite and are there if you need advice on the menu. To finish- if you are there for dinner, they do really goood desert cocktails (i've never tasted them so relying on my sisters experience) , if you're not into an alcoholic desert they do these amazing traditional Indian drinks called Mango Lassi's! Hope this is helpful, and definitely the best Indian Restaurant in Ireland. Plus they've two other restaurants- one in Ranelagh and one in Malahide.

Tandoori chicken and naan bread [comes with a side of curry sauce.] I was in my mates a couple months back and I wanted to get some food but wanted something relatively healthy and Thai was not floating my boat that night. So my mate told me about Ruposhi and that the naan is super fluffy and not oily and the food is nommers. The tandoori chicken is a big portion. It's like half a chicken. Moist, tasty, ugh. So good. The standard curry sauce it comes with is great. Fairly spicy. Just as I like it. So so good. The naan is light and fluffy and as naan should be. Not covered in oil or dare I say it, GHEE, like a lot of places. I am looking forward to trying some other things off the menu when I want to be a bold boy. But for when I am being a good boy this is a great dish to order. Really top quality stuff and price wise it's very reasonable for the standard you get. It's really good restaurant standard food. GHEE..... Had to say that again, sorry.
