View from our seat

This was an unexpected find. We saw a low rating on Yelp and almost slipped it but it had a convenient location and lovely view. The service was great. The lamb biryani just right and the chicken tikis shahaleek was to die for. The naan was fluffy and cooked ton perfection In short the best Indian meals Ive had in Scotland. We washed down the food with chilled beers and enjoyed the view! We strongly recommend!

One of the very beautiful views from Spice World.

Yuwu - spring roll and soup

This used to be a reassuringly expensive style bar, but then Wetherspoons appeared and people no…read morelonger felt the need to walk further. That's my take on it at least. Well anyhoo now it's Yuwu, a contemporary Chinese restaurant. It's comfortable inside, it looks and feels the part, and we got ushered quickly to a table when we chanced our arm without a booking, it's new and so it wasn't particularly busy for a Saturday night. The menu is a fairly typical Chinese menu, the unusual items being scallop - well it is Oban after all - and fillet steak dishes. I opted for Chicken Satay Skewers followed by Fillet Steak with Ginger and Black Bean and a side of Egg Fried Rice. The skewers came and I was shocked, they were enormous, by far the biggest chicken satay skewers I've ever had. The sauce was mild and subtle, it could have been a bit more textured and spicy, but it was pleasant and the chicken was moist...and it was huge! I was pretty impressed so far and set about my Sun Lik lager, not one that I can remember coming across before, it's a bit like Tennents. Next thing I know we were being apologised to because the mains order had been missed due to the new handheld technology, so I got another Sun Lik for free. Yayyy! I suppose for Chinese food it was taking a while. Suddenly the passageway was filled by a dense fog rushing towards us. Helpppp! It was like a scene out of a John Carpenter film and was more than a little disconcerting. I leaned back as this spitting, sizzling volcano was presented on the table and literally couldn't see as I was engulfed by the falling column of smoke. And no I am not exaggerating. Seriously. People at the other end of the restaurant started coughing, and the staff opened every door they could, even the kitchen door, to disperse the smoke. The eruption had abated and I started moving the sauce around to stop it and the meat sticking, I was mostly successful in this. They'd obviously overheated it to get it out quickly to us. This was really the only problem with the dish, it had a rich and flavoursome sauce with plenty of ginger, and the steak was soft and easily eaten with chopsticks. A star off for the wait, the coughing and the sticking main.

I work in George Street just down the road from this restaurant so when the diet wagon looses a…read morewheel I often pop in here for a takeaway lunch, which has steadily risen in price over the last year from £3.40 to £4.50. Anyway I digress this review is about a sit down lunch I had with three of my colleagues. The restaurant owns two units in a long line (literal meaning here) of retail and business fronts. It is a fairly spacious place but some of the tables looked a wee bit tight, like they recently accommodated a big table. Fortunately we weren't sat at any of these. We were given a table sat right beside the open door, however, it was a very warm day (balmy highs of 21) and the breeze was pleasant. We ordered off the lunch time menu which is about £6.00 depending on what you have. All in 4 of us with two waters and two fizzy drinks were £7.00 a head 10% tip included. Prawn crackers were put on the table before drinks were orders but after the menus had been handed to us. My starter was chicken noodle soup which was delicious. I often have this without feeling the need to season it, however, this time I used lots of pepper and soya sauce. It's a nice way to eat it once in a while. My choice of main was chicken curry and boiled rice. I cannot complement the curry in here enough, it is so good I have boiled rice to appreciate the curry more. I think in terms of a Chinese curry it is perfect. Spicy but not overly so, and just a great combination of chicken onions and the occasional pea. The consistency of this dish is also great, I've eaten it many times and can't remember feeling dissatisfied with it. Desert was a banana fritter which was nice if a bit overindulgent for lunch on a work day. However, if you don't have it the cost is the same. All in all friendly atmosphere and a great lunch. It isn't a showy as other Chinese or oriental restaurants, even at dinner time, but for great food it is hard to beat and I know I'll be back in a heartbeat.

I had tried their takeaway menu so decided to sit in one night with my mum. We had prawn toast to start which honestly was so good you couldn't tell it was gluten free. I then had the beef curry whilst my mum had chicken balls in sweet and sour sauce. Both was equally delicious but the curry sauce was just slightly too runny for my liking. The chicken balls were lovely and really crispy so a slight difference from the gluten kind you normally get from a takeaway. We shared a fried rice and chips between us. There was a slightly longer wait for food as it's cooked separately but that didn't bother us. The staff are friendly and my mum was offered a free strawberry liqueur once we had finished our meal. It's a bit of a drive from me but It's worth to to be able to enjoy Chinese food without the pain!!,
