I got sweet and sour chicken, my friend ordered a beef dish, and we split fried rice. The sweet and sour chicken reeked of vinegar, and didn't disappoint with a heavy vinegar taste. The beef was in a sauce that I care not to remember. The rice I don't really recall because I was too busy trying to get the tasted of vinegar out of my mouth. The only reason it isn't a one star is because it's open late.

It gets worse, I took a bite and it tasted like someone dumped a bag of sugar in it . Tikka masala should never ever be this sweet. This tasted like some kind of dessert. I wanted to spit it out but we were hungry so we ate it begrudgingly. I've had this dish many times around the world and this was by far the worst version. The sugar drowned out all the spices. The only saving grace was the tandoor chicken itself was tender and delicious. The garlic naan itself was fine, and it was pretty big. Glad we only got one. Well anyhoo now it's Yuwu, a contemporary Chinese restaurant. It's comfortable inside, it looks and feels the part, and we got ushered quickly to a table when we chanced our arm without a booking, it's new and so it wasn't particularly busy for a Saturday night. The menu is a fairly typical Chinese menu, the unusual items being scallop - well it is Oban after all - and fillet steak dishes. I opted for Chicken Satay Skewers followed by Fillet Steak with Ginger and Black Bean and a side of Egg Fried Rice. The skewers came and I was shocked, they were enormous, by far the biggest chicken satay skewers I've ever had. The sauce was mild and subtle, it could have been a bit more textured and spicy, but it was pleasant and the chicken was moist...and it was huge! I was pretty impressed so far and set about my Sun Lik lager, not one that I can remember coming across before, it's a bit like Tennents. Next thing I know we were being apologised to because the mains order had been missed due to the new handheld technology, so I got another Sun Lik for free. Yayyy! I suppose for Chinese food it was taking a while. Suddenly the passageway was filled by a dense fog rushing towards us. Helpppp! It was like a scene out of a John Carpenter film and was more than a little disconcerting. I leaned back as this spitting, sizzling volcano was presented on the table and literally couldn't see as I was engulfed by the falling column of smoke. And no I am not exaggerating. Seriously. People at the other end of the restaurant started coughing, and the staff opened every door they could, even the kitchen door, to disperse the smoke. The eruption had abated and I started moving the sauce around to stop it and the meat sticking, I was mostly successful in this. They'd obviously overheated it to get it out quickly to us. This was really the only problem with the dish, it had a rich and flavoursome sauce with plenty of ginger, and the steak was soft and easily eaten with chopsticks. The Lucky Star is a stunning Fish and Chips takeaway but the Eighty 8 is dishing out a level of quality I have not seen for a while. The Lucky Star is also a mighty trek from the city centre and I had to catch a train. First off a disclaimer. I found this place after being at the Ayrshire Whisky Festival. So, was I slightly pissed? Oh Yes. But despite this, I will share my opinion. I am a pain in the butt when it comes to Chinese Food. I like particular dishes. Always have. I always order Singapore Rice Vermicelli. It is really a melange of cuisine with Rice Noodles, Curry, Seafood, CharSui Pork and Chinese Vegetables. Most places cannot make it. They screw it up. Noodles are too thick, the pork is wrong, they mess up the spices, etc etc. The Eighty 8 pulled it off perfectly. Great heat, enough curry, great mix of ingredients. Wow. Too bad it is in bloody Ayr or I would be back - a lot. So, get yourself down here. I would phone ahead or you will have a 30 minute wait ahead of you. The fact that they takes longer usually means the staff uses fresher ingredients. I am always suspicious of places that can churn out a dish in under 4 minutes. It makes me think that some corners are cut and some things are pre-made and microwaved. The dishes from the Eighty 8 hit a bar that I have not seen reached for a very long time. Congrats.
