Very solid spot for when your cravings for a quick Indian meal hits. Their mango lassi and rotational soft serve are my personal favorites (love that they have yet to tell me their soft serve machine is broken unlike many places that offer it besides McDonald's). The reason why I can't give it a full 5 stars is due to the portion sizes - which are way too small. I am often left starving after a Kathi roll and almost always get the snack Chana chaat to make it a meal. Overall it's good for a quick tasty lunch if you're in a hurry but you should get more than a Kathi roll because unless you eat like a bird you will be left feeling very hungry. read more

Absolutely love this place!! I can't recommend this place enough! I decided to give this place a try after seeing that they offered a unique variety of Indian Street food. The interior of the place is absolutely adorable and colourfully decorated. We were astonished by the menu as everything was under $9! Our order consisted of mango lassi, masala aloo, aloo tikki chaat, and the chicken tikka roll. They were extremely quick to complete my order and I was out within 5 minutes from ordering. With how small this place is, you can see them in the back readily preparing your order. The masala aloo was so delicious! It came with delicious sauces and the fries were perfectly seasoned and crisp. For only $3 I would definitely order this again and again! The chicken tikka roll was phenomenal as well and consisted of a myriad of flavourful components. Definitely try this place out if you're ever in the Ballard area! Well. This is sad. And I know, perhaps most of you eating regularly here, won't appreciate this. I got to be honest about our experience at Spice Waala. If one has not experienced authentic sumptuous Indian food, that too street food, creations at Spice Waala may just be Perfect. We thought it would be wonderful to get some Indian street food on Ballard streets! Spice Waala surfaced as an obvious choice based on the engraved plaque outside the restaurant. We dined in at the Ballard restaurant. As a starter we ordered bhel puri and papdi chaat. Person at the cash register and serving the order was pleasant, courteous and prompt. All things one would expect. Food was prepared promptly. Interior is simple, tasteful and clean with lots of plants, cheerful colors and imagery of turbans. Nice job! Once we looked at and tasted both dishes, the reality sank in. Both dishes lacked essential flavors of the real Street food. BHEL puri was blend and lacked flavors and basic ingredients. Papadi chaat was not even close to the image we saw on the website, besides lacking chutneys, essential ingredients. Besides the bottom layer of large chopped potatoes was uncooked and not worth sinking teeth into. Both of us cook and really enjoy simple food with real authentic flavors from various cultures. This was simply not good. Nothing more to add except, we didn't order dinner after experiences with appetizers. A Sad encounter. I am a bit picky with restaurants, especially with indian food, and this spot is worth going out of your way for. Flavors are on point and well-balanced throughout the menu. But what makes it special is the service. Always felt so welcome with my family. I can tell they went above and beyond to make the ambiance feel special. I am definitely happy that spice Waala opened near me. And I really wanted to give them 5stars but I definitely feel there are things that can be improved. So let's break it down. I have tried the aloo roll, bhel, aloo chat and the special - chole bhature Good pricing. The dips/chutneys are really really good. Love the bhel and roll - definitely worth buying again Personally for roll I would have liked a little more chutney, but my friend thought it was really good! Cons: One time I ordered bhel close to closing time and I feel it only had the sauce and barely any onions or other toppings- could be they were partially out of ingredients but I wish they had declined the order I was happy to see them make the bhatura when I got to the store since it's fried bread and would be oily if made too early. I ate it about 15 mins later and was disappointed in how oily the bread was. Maybe it was fried twice? Anyway the chole was also on the salty side. My friend and I decided to try this restaurant for lunch. We both work in Ballard. The lamb roll was delicious but the paneer roll lacked flavor. The fries and chutney were good. My friend and I wanted to split the two rolls and they said they couldn't do it because the rolls would fall apart. That would happen anyhow after taking a bite from one end so not sure why the insisted they couldn't. That being said we had to talk them into it. For the price, the rolls are tiny and not worth the price. And finally, the cashier said he couldn't split the bill. Is he serious. Maybe lazy , because they have one of this apple type screens that allow for splitting bills. What the hell. I doubt I would go back. read more

Avoid this place. Do not go in there if you respect yourself. The food is not exception and is "ok" Overpriced for $8 for a 1/2 half wrap or half a meal. I tried the lamb. They put an abusive amount of spices killing the flavor. All their sides " snacks" are disgusting. Nachos are a dry crackers from their bread, and an abusive amount of sour cream. Not much flavor. something cold and bland. The worst part, is that if you pay using your credit card. They will gather your information THROUGH YOUR BANK. I usually don't eat out for Indian food because a lot of places end up being too heavy. Plus, I'm lucky enough (read: spoiled) to get amazing home cooking on the regular. But Spice Waala is my exception. When my mom was in town, I got the papdi chaat and aloo chaat and as soon as my mom caught a wiff of it, she was making chai to make sure we did it the whole thing right. It was a hit with her and my sister. Last visit I got the chicken tikka kathi roll which was juicy and so flavorful. Perfect amount of kick. But what I love most is that everything feels light and I don't feel weighed down. The soft servie (coffee/cocoa this time, changes monthly) was delicious. They are also becoming my go to spot to buy chutneys. I just got the imli (tamarind/cilantro chutney) and it is heavenly. I'm finding any excuse to put it on everything. Work lunches have become one of my favorite things to look forward to during the week. In an effort to bring some balance to both work and life, I have taken it upon myself to find time during the day to continue those work meetings and discussions over food. After all, we have to eat and let's be real - I probably will end up skipping lunch if I didn't plan these! By our neighborhood a new location for Spice Waala popped up. It's smallish restaurant with only 4 tables for dine in, but most people take out. The menu is short but it's all delicious Indian street food. You can't go wrong with whatever you choose. As mains, they have Kathi Rolls that include a protein that is marinated and grilled with green chutney, onions and wrapped in a roti bread. I had 1 lamb roll but honestly I could have had 3. It's was very delicious. They also had the option to choose paneer, aloo tikki, and chicken tikka. Don't forget the snacks however. Since it was our first time there, we ordered almost all of them: masala aloo (seasoned fries), bhel puri, puffed rice over fried chips, and papdi chaat. We will have to save the aloo tikki chaat and chana chaat for a future meal! The best part is that they now have a monthly rotating soft serve ice cream machine. The day we went, they had a masala chai flavor but I hear they recently switched to fennel. Don't forget your "liquid gold" or mango lassi. Absolutely wonderful. Alas, I found myself yet again rolling out of the restaurant but overstuffing myself was definitely worth it! If you haven't been by, check it out. We ordered take out from this place last weekend. The food here is absolutely delicious! Didn't have an idea about the portion size and we kind of ended up with not enough food for all. But now we know :) The Lychee soft serve was so creamy and refreshing for the heat wave! I liked that they packed all the chutneys on the side. That way my chaat wasn't soggy. But alas, they missed packing the green chutney :( I also liked the card that came with the food, that showed how to assemble the chaat. That was much appreciated, because I was looking through all the containers hoping to find one with chole for the aloo tikki chaat. Looking at the card I realized their aloo tikki chaat doesn't actually come with chole but just the chutneys, sev and the sweet yogurt. The tikki was delicious and the sweet chutney was mind blowing. It's usually watered down at most restaurants, but here's the best I have had so far. Once assembled it was soooooo good, I wish I had ordered another plate of the same. Same with the papdi chaat - we gave it a good toss with the chutneys, yogurt & sev and we were left wanting more. We also got a paneer burji roll and aloo tikki roll, both Calcutta style with egg. Both were so so good, burst of flavors in every bite. The paneer burji roll was actually quite filling. I think one roll and one snack would be just right for one person. During my first visit, the chicken in the chicken tikka roll was dry and the lamb kebab roll was gamy. They have definitely made some changes to the dishes. My most recent visit was the best experience with the chicken with juicy center and filled with flavor and the green chutney was not overpowering. The ground lamb patties adds a nice texture to the roll. I saw egg as an add on on the rolls for the first time and I had to try it. If you love add eggs, it's a nice touch to the rolls! Got the Paneer Bhurji Kathi Roll and the Chana chaat. The kathi roll was pretty dry, and it being stuffed with ground paneer certainly did not help. It tasted equivalent to taking bites of roti and straight paneer. The lack of flavor made this dish hard to get down (definitely needed water), but for a Kathi roll, the abundant paneer made this entree quite filling. The Chana chaat, on the other hand, tasted really good. The beans were cooked well, and they were pretty generous with the cilantro chutney. The chutney was surprisingly authentic, and so it made this dish taste like ones you'd get at an Indian potluck. If you end up getting this combination of dishes, I'd recommend eating the chaat with the Kathi roll at the same time to get your flavor in. (The other chaats looked pretty good too). read more

When I'm out and about in the neighborhood I like to hit up and support as much businesses as I can do glad I was finally able to check out Spice Waala. I didn't order ahead just did a walk in order and it was done fairly quickly. I had been wanting to try them after seeing people posting about the Capitol Hill location but that's not very convenient for a bus rider in Ballard so I was quote excited when I heard they were opening a spot in my neighborhood. I ordered the lamb kebab kathi roll and the papdi chaat. The prices are very reasonable, when you first see the rolls they seem deceivingly small but are actually very filling and packed with delicious ingredients. I probably did a no no dipping my roll in the brown chutney meant for my chaat. But oh my gosh!!! their chutney is full of flavor pretty sure I'll buy a jar of the brown chutney next time I return it would taste good on anything!! Also loved the sour cream sauce tat comes with the chaat. Ingredients were so fresh. The only thing I wasn't clear about since I got it to go and don't know much about the dish is was I supposed to heat the papdi chaat? Cause the potatoes on it were cold? The flavors of the dish were wonderful loved the pomegranate seeds gave great texture and a pop of freshness along with the cilantro. I spent over 10 years in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and there is a little gem there that serves kati rolls with various indian curries wrapped up in a roti. It was one of our favorite places to eat, despite their horrendous service. Spice Waala brings me back to that place. Um. Hands down my best find in a long time. These folks are amazing. Just drove 30 min to check out Spice Waala (what else is there to do these days on a Friday night?) and I'm definitely not mad. I tried the lamb kathi roll (w egg) immediately after returning to my car, and downed the whole thing. Super moist, tasty, perfect. I had the strength to drive home after that satisfying little roll of heaven. When I got home I unwrapped the Aloo Chaat "snack" and the other Paneer Kathi Roll, as well as a mango lassi. I'm glad I got the lassi because the other dishes have some spice. I'm not the hugest fan of the paneer so I would probably try the chicken tikka next time. It had a couple bell pepper chunks and just not as much flavor I guess? But I may try it again. It was by no means bad (hard to compare w the lamb). The Aloo Chaat though. Was not expecting this. Like a soft potato falafel topped with layers of creamy, tangy garlic goodness. Really unique flavor and textures. Can't wait to come back and try everything else! I was excited to see Spice Waala come to Ballard, without even visiting their Cap Hill location. I was right to be excited. Both the paneer and aloo wraps are so well flavored. They were spicy, though not too much to deter my heat-averse husband. The portion was so reasonable and fit well with the price. The sides were such a fun way to try new dishes. I'd never had khel puri and it's become a fast favorite. Plus, you gotta love that Indian food offers so many vegetarian options.
