Service is kind of awkward to say the least. They always seem surprised or confused when I walk in to pick up an order. That being said I'm a regular customer here and the food makes up for that. This place is a jewel in the San Bernardino area! Every bite of theirs different plates screams "authentic, traditional and homemade food". I can taste the passion and care the chefs put in their cooking. I went for the first time two years ago and let's say less : I am a regular customer since then. The service is great, my favorite plates Daal yellow lentils, Plain naan, Coconut Chicken curry, Bengan Bhartha and their Cabaabs. Early for a Kaiser appointment, I Yelped the area for something good and easy on the wallet. When I opened door the place was totally vacant. I waited a few seconds before going to the Chipotle I spotted on the way there when a young man told me to sit and wait. At this moment I was transported to a vibrant and passionate litany of arguments between apparent family members in Urdu (I suspect). Instead of getting my bread, the young man engaged in a very passionately debate with another young man who appeared to spend most of his days grooming his ornate and perfectly symmetrical beard! He should totally be a model for antique bicycle ads! Anyway, they seemed very excited about what sounded like very nice Bangra music emitting loudly from a phone that was no longer meant for that kind of abuse. Realizing that the music was the only highlight of the meal, when it stopped I had finished my second serving after which time my bread was dropped onto my wobbly table unceremoniously. I'll break this review up into three parts; price, taste and service. Price: this has only 1 dollar sign so I expected cheap prices, unfortunately this was not the case. The combo plate option I read about on Yelp was not an option according to the cashier. So I ordered the chicken tikka masala entreé which does not come with any rice or naan. So I had to order both separately. My total was almost $18 for a small container of chicken tikka, small container of rice and 4 pieces of naan. (See photo). This was waaaaay to expensive for the amount I was given. 1 star on the price. Taste: food (as small the portion was) the taste was good. Creamy buttery chicken tikka. Did find a small price of bone in the chicken, luckily my husband didn't swallow it. Also I asked for medium spice and WOW it was REALLY spicey, I love spice but for "medium" it was too much. The rice was good and the naan was good as well. Service: I got take out so I ordered from the right side of the place that is also an Indian food market. So much has changed since this place first opened. The combo specials that lured me into this restaurant now only exist during lunch hours of 11am to 3pm. The newer restaurant side has pleasant decor, but lacks hospitality & efficiency. The food is inconsistent. I use to come no less than weekly and everything was always fresh, my garlic naan, lentils and samosas. Now I'm lucky if I can deal with the service long enough to be disappointed by my lentils that obviously had stuff added to it to help it stretch. Most importantly, the nice couple who use to run everything are no longer on the front lines. We are over the moon in love with this restaurant! The contemporary design had clean lines and awesome graphic novel style art, and the bathrooms are immaculate. We came on a Monday night and ordered off the menu, but are looking forward to trying the lunch buffet to expand our knowledge of Indian dishes. Shashi, the manager, was a sweet, attentive, wonderful guide for our first experience with Indian food. She gave us an educational tutorial on curries, spices, and tradition without treating us like children. What a sweet lady! I'd come back just for her! She treated us like family. Our meal started with roti, which is a crispy, cracker/chip? shaped like a tortilla. It had cumin seeds and sesame seeds throughout as was fresh and delicious. We also had a chicken tika appetizer that came out to the table with a beautiful, sizzling iron skillet presentation. It sat on a bed of onions and green peppers and had the perfect amount of spicy heat. We ordered medium. My husband has always had a fear of Indian food because he'd always heard it was super hot & spicy. He is now a true believer at the medium heat level. He had a Chicken Tandoori combination dinner with, chicken and lamb Tika kabob, bone-in Chicken Tika, basmati rice spiked with fresh cilantro and ghee (clarified butter), chicken Tika Masala(yellow curried chicken & veggies), and Gulab Jamun which is a tasty, deep fried, dry milk and cheese ball, soaked in sugar syrup. I had the Goat Curry, and Vegetable Biryani, which is a mixed vegetable, saffron spiked, basmati rice, with nuts, and fresh herbs. Everything we put in our mouths brought us a little closer to heaven. The chicken was cooked expertly, juicy & tender. The spices were fresh and aromatic, the heat level was perfect. The goat curry sauce made my mouth water as it reached the table. It had an abundance of flavor without being spicy, again extremely aromatic, with rich cinnamon undertones, and made my eyes roll back in my head. The stewed goat was tender and flavorful, not overcooked or dry. The bits of cartilage were buttery and yielding, melting ever so slightly as you chewed. The vegetable biryani was almost a meal unto itself. It was similar to fried rice in looks, but that is where the comparison ends. The basmati was nutty, fluffy, and soft. The saffron flavor was delightfully floral without being overpowering. Each vegetable, the peas, cauliflower, onion, and green pepper were al dente and as fresh as could be, with cashews liberally tossed throughout. There was a side of yogurt sauce that was tangy and refreshing. It helped tamp down some of the spice, and as condiments go, was a nice addition, but not necessary. I had trouble wanting to tame anything I had. ****We had garlic Naan and traditional and both were house made, fresh, warm, and both chewy and crispy. It was hard to beat.**** Overall we heartily recommend this spot for the ambiance, service, quality of food and presentation. This is an easy 5 stars. It breaks my heart to have to update this review, especially as this place is just down the street from my house and used a be a place I frequented. Quality of food and service has really gone south. On multiple occasions I've had experiences with servers who were either negligent, rude, or both. For example, one time my family and I came to eat and despite there being more than one server/host available, no one seated us. We sat on our own then were ignored for at least ten minutes. On other occasions servers have been short and curt with us, or we would need to ask for basic things like water/naan/cutlery numerous time. I don't think it's fair to assume this is a cultural thing because I have not had this experience at other Indian restaurants. Lately I've also noticed they really water down their lunch buffet, perhaps to cut costs. It causes the food to be really runny. A small group of friends and I visited this awesome spot after running practice all day out at Southridge Park. Needless to say my buddy and I were famished, and our wives were on the war path for some good food. I ordered the 2 item entree with the chicken tikka masala, and the lamb curry. They were out of the lamb, and the guy behind the counter recommended that I go with the goat curry instead. Sure, why not! Every entree comes with naan, and I opted for the garlic, which was the best choice I made all day. Some places give you a tiny little order of naan, but not these guys, they provided so much, that we asked for a to go box so we could enjoy it later that night. The chicken tikka was amazing. Seriously, do yourself a favor and order it. The goat was pretty good too, but I found it to be incredibly boney. Now this was my first time 'enjoying' goat, so I don't know if that's how it always is, or if that's how these guys prepare it. I suspect that based on the quality of all the other food we ate, that it's just how goat is. Despite that, the meat was incredibly tender, and the curry tasted delicious. To drink, I almost had a Mexican Coke, but then spotted a soda in a bottle that said 'thumbs up'. I asked the guy behind the counter what it was, and he told me it was basically Indian Coke, but way better. Once again, he was right. The curry, combined with the naan, on top of the thumbs up soda made this place an absolute must return in my mind.
