I visited Spice House Midtown on a Saturday night as my second stop of the evening after noticing they had live music. I'm familiar with the Lithonia location but had never been to this one, so I was excited to check it out. Surprisingly, I was able to make a reservation just 45 minutes before arriving--a 10:45 p.m. reservation for three during a girls' night out. Upon arriving, I noticed that valet parking was $10, which isn't terrible, but considering the parking lot is directly attached to the restaurant, it felt unnecessary to charge patrons to park there. What made it even more confusing was that when I was ready to leave, the valet simply handed me my keys--because my car was literally parked right in front of the booth. While that's great for accessibility, I could have just parked and retrieved my own car without the extra charge. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted and promptly seated in a nice booth facing the bar. Aaron was our server for the evening, and let me just say--he was fantastic. He was super accommodating, provided excellent customer service, and truly made it feel like I was catching dinner with a friend rather than just being served at a restaurant. From now on, whenever I come back, I'll definitely be requesting Aaron's section. The live band was amazing. They had the crowd moving and played a melody of songs for about 30 to 45 minutes straight, which really set the vibe for the night. I ordered a French 75, which was pretty decent, along with a side of macaroni and cheese that was cheesy, flavorful, and well-seasoned. Aaron also gave us a little background on the executive chef, who is Jamaican, which adds to the authenticity of the Caribbean flavors on the menu. My friend ordered the turkey wings with black rice, and I tried a bite of the rice--it was really good. Now, let's talk about the fees. While the hookah was advertised as $45, my receipt showed it as $40 for the hookah plus a separate $5 hookah fee. I don't really understand why places break up pricing like this instead of just listing it as $45 outright. It would make way more sense to just give customers a cohesive price instead of tacking on random fees--especially when the bill is for hookah only. There was also a $15 entertainment fee per person. I do appreciate that the hostess informed me of this fee before seating us, so I was aware of it and didn't mind paying. I just want to mention it so others know to expect it when they visit. Overall, I really enjoyed the experience at this location--way more than the Lithonia one. Even though they have the same exact menu, Midtown delivered better food presentation, superior customer service, and an overall smoother experience. I definitely plan on coming back in the next couple of weeks for a particular DJ, and you can bet I'll be making sure I'm sitting in Aaron's section. read more

Went on a Sunday during Brunch time. I was unaware and it is unclear that they only serve from the Brunch menu during brunch time and they claim to serve from the starters menu, but that is untrue. What we found out is that the menu they are using is not the same menu that comes up from scanning the QR code on the table. I commend the manager or owner (not sure who exactly she was, because she never introduced herself) for somewhat keeping her cool when my friend's child damaged the open sign in the window. Hershel provided great service. He was friendly and checked in on us a healthy number of times. He was extremely patient with our inquisitiveness and indecisiveness. After a lot of confusion and back and forth I ended up getting the Vegan Rasta Pasta and a Mojito. The mojito was okay. The Vegan Rasta Pasta was exceptional. Came here on a date, I think the service is nice. Food is pretty good as well, I think the oxtail portions should be a little smaller due to all the fat on them. The gravy and rice were really good. The sides are really pricey, a side of Plantains were 10 dollars when you probably only eat like 2 of them. What a cute spot! I've passed by several times and always wanted to try. To my surprise, I didn't do the research but it is Caribbean. I've always loved Rasta pasta so I gave it ago. It did not disappoint. My rest of pasta was with chicken, though they have oxtail and shrimp I believe. Considering this was lunch no cocktails for me just water. The bartender was lively and kind. I came here around 7pm on a Wednesday night. Our waiter was very nice, but service was a bit slower given that the restaurant wasn't packed. I started with the Ace punch, which comes in a small plastic bottle. They do provide you with a glass with ice if you don't want to drink out of the bottle though. It was a great drink though I'd definitely get it again. For my entree, I had the jerk chicken with rice and beans and cabbage. The rice and beans was cooked so well that it was dried out, so I made sure to move the jerk sauce from the chicken over to the rice and beans to hydrate it. I visited the Spice House for my friend's birthday and had a great time. I ordered the rasta pasta with salmon and the food was delicious. It was pretty crowded and a live band was playing. There was a $15 charge at the door and we paid $12 for parking so $42 was spent before we ordered our food. I'm not sure why you pay for parking because the restaurant has a parking lot. I got a lemon drop at the bar. That was very tangy sweet yeah potent and two appetizers the frog green tomatoes, and the jerk chicken egg rolls. I would say that came out quick and was definitely delicious and seasoned. I enjoyed the cabbage inside the egg roll. It was some type of dipping sauce. I'm not sure but the green tomatoes I can absolutely say Phenomenal they were a decent size and they didn't fall apart. Last Saturday my cousin and I went to an event at Pin & Proper (which was a cute idea but the food sucked!). Being the bougie food snobs we are, we decided to search for REAL food. Came here over memorial weekend. We were a party of 7 ladies. We had a reservation at 2:00 but they were not ready for us until about 2:30. We were seated outside. DJ was just setting up so we were ready for good vibes, continuous mimosas and great food. It took them FOREVERRR to take our orders and even longer for our drinks. I had the opportunity to visit this establishment's Lithonia location a few days ago. It was for lunch, and the ambience was just ok. It's located in a small strip mall, parking is available. Overall, the food and its presentation were good. There were plenty of choices on the menu. The service was mediocre at best. The most confusing element was the 18% mandatory service charge as stated on my receipt. Restaurants that charge a service charge should explain what it's for exactly ( operational cost, employee health insurance, etc). If it's actually the tip, then it should be clearly stated as tip as oppose to service charge. Service charge is way too vague and it's not being conveyed correctly. And if you collect a second tip which is optional, it should be stated as an additional tip or an extra tip which is voluntary of course. read more

When I asked to substitute something that came with my meal because they ran out, I was told that the check didn't like the quality of the item and didn't feel comfortable serving it . This place did not deliver as we would expect for ANY restaurant. Let me start from the top. The restaurant was almost completely empty. We were seated on the outside patio after discovering there was NO air conditioning inside at all There were fans out on the patio that just moved the hot air around. We started with drinks, and appetizers. Party of 8. One person ordered an amaretto sour and it never came, but everyone else's drink did come. When it finally did come, it came as a 2oz glass of just mix when we asked what it was and why it was so little, the waiter said she'd have to go and ask. She came back with a shot of amaretto on the side and said the bartender didn't know she wanted it huh? So now I guess she was supposed to mix her own drink at the table (no ice, sitting in the heat) we complained again, and ANOTHER server (possibly the Mgr) came and took both the small glass and the shot back to the bar, and came back with a correctly made amaretto sour, finally. The guys wanted Stellas, but they were all out, so they drank water instead. We also did not have the same server all night, which was also frustrating. While all of this was going on, the sun had set, the patio was dark, and we were left wondering when they would give us some light. Finally someone else came and turned the lights on, but turned the fans OFF! ‍ It got so hot so fast we were all now sweating. We asked if the fans could be turned back on and they said oh someone must've turned them off when they turned the lights on ‍ we also had to keep asking that the music be turned back on as it kept going off after each song played. Appetizers finally started coming out, we ordered 2 orders of crab cakes and 2 orders of egg rolls. Crab Cakes were $20 and were the size of 2 little meatballs, and not very good. The 2 orders of egg rolls came out 15 mins behind each other. The first order did not come with a dipping sauce, but the second one did. The sauce is what made them edible but we only got it with the second order (no consistency) The food finally started coming out, Jerk Chicken dinners with rice & beans & cabbage, Oxtails, Seafood Paella, Rasta Pasta w/shrimp, a small Mac n Cheese & Lamb Chops. Everyone said the food lacked seasoning, the rice & beans were dry and overcooked, while the cabbage & oxtails were undercooked, oxtails had a super thick gravy coating. The Rasta Pasta used penne pasta but was so dry it was inedible. The Mac n Cheese used the same penne pasta and was not even creamy cheesy, but dry. They lamb chops lacked seasoning but were tender (it's lamb ‍). The best thing was the Paella. You actually get a nice amount of seafood for the price. And the flavor was pretty good. We'd also asked if they had Don Julio, the waiter said he would have to check. He never came back with that answer. As we were leaving, we walked inside to the bar, and there it was, a whole brand new bottle of Don Julio on the bar, never opened. We immediately told them they missed out on at least another $100, as we were celebrating a birthday and always do shots of Don Julio. They didn't seem to care much. Also, the valet guy came out to the patio before we were even leaving to let us know he was getting off work, and brought us the car key ‍. BTW, we tipped the valet guy when we arrived, but didn't get a true complete valet service. The menu also has a short message at the bottom that says 18% gratuity is automatically added and food or drinks cannot be returned or exchanged for any reason. We've never seen anyone print the latter on their menu. However they did take off the Rasta Pasta and took the dish back. They never even tried to offer us dessert, even though we were not going to order another thing from them. We were so happy to get back in our cars to the air conditioning. Also we're from Chicago, a city with great food, so our expectations are quite different. I'd never refer anyone to this place. read more

I tried this place a few weeks ago for the first time and I will definitely be back. I had the rasta past with salmon and my friend had the rasta pasta with lobster tail. Both were delicious. I also tried the jerk egg rolls and they were onpoint as well. I was hoping to try the oxtail (I've heard good things about them) but unfortunately they were out that night. Decided to get some oxtails today! After reading the reviews, I was excited to try this place. I ordered the jerk chicken egg rolls and oxtails with rice & beans. The jerk chicken egg rolls must have been recooked! They weren't tasty! I would never order those again. A few of the oxtails were cooked good, while a few other pieces were tough. I'm an oxtail eater and I look for flavor and meat Falling off the bone! It's the only way oxtails should be sold. These oxtails didn't have much flavor either. I was disappointed. I don't eat meat often and this ended up being a waste of $$$ and time. I hope it was an off night for the restaurant, although it was a Saturday, but I won't be returning. read more
