These guys are rock stars! They delivered my alpha-modified camera just in time for my trip out west for dark skies, and the modified rig performed flawlessly. I was able to pull out so much more detail in the Milky Way than ever before. I later had a minor issue with the firmware on the camera (likely my own user error), which the owner was able to help me fix by myself very quickly. He returned my call within 10 minutes and walked me through the fix step by step. I wouldn't hesitate to do business with them again. read more

I have resorted to informing the pro that offered their products that the customer service has been piss poor. Spencer's was recommended to me by the Youtube presenter and author of one of the best books on learning astrophotography, Alyn Wallace. I sent them a full-frame Canon 6D for a fairly extensive modification before Christmas. They did the following: "Visible H-Alpha" option, installation of heat sink, AA filter removal. They completed the modification and shipped to me in Canada in good time, and most important, the camera--tested in several long shoots-- is working flawlessly in every way. I notice an excellent improvement in performance, especially in enhanced colors in the Milky Way core. read more

My reviews are the same as most of the others: " My interaction with Spencer's Camera is THE WORST experience I have ever had with any company" I sent my cameras in to be fixed and modified and it took over a year to get them back. I had to keep call logs of every call with notes and every time I called if I was even able to get through it was excuse after excuse. I made over 50 calls checking up on these cameras. They were supposed to ship on multiple times and then a problem would come up. I would rather throw my camera in the trash than send them back here. The stress it caused me and the time spent wasted on calls while nothing was being done took years off my life. Anytime I was told I would I would hear back and not once did I hear back. I should have paid attention to other reviews of this business who described similar issues with this company. My interaction with Spencer's Camera is THE WORST experience I have ever had with any company. I sent a camera meant for a Christmas present way back in August to be evaluated, and in short, I asked them to return it in December, unrepaired. The problems with this business are their lack of communication and, frankly, conflicting stories as to why the repair was taking so long. They also claimed to have have e-mailed me multiple times which they did not. First, until I e-mailed them, they never confirmed the arrival of my camera. Second, despite their claim that they e-mailed me several times with updates, I never received any updates, despite multiple requests. Clearly, however, my e-mail did work as I did have a couple of communications with them. In one instance they stated they would check into the problem, but I never heard back. I called, and the man I spoke with stated that someone was sick which is why responses were delayed. However, subsequent e-mails were not answered. I called again, and the man stated that he was awaiting parts from California and it would be a couple of weeks. About a month an a half later, with no e-mail response, I called again. This time the man stated that parts were being requested from Fuji but were indefinitely delayed. He also claimed to have e-mailed me multiple times, however I received no e-mails. Regardless, one wonders why he might not have just picked up the telephone and and called me or left a message. The delay in fixing the camera does not necessarily bother me, as this was an older camera, and perhaps the parts would never be available. What did bother me was the almost non-existent customer communication and follow up during the almost four months (!) they had my camera, and the conflicting stories as to why e-mails were not answered, and why the camera was taking so long to fix. It was I who had to initiate every effort at trying to obtain updates, usually with absolutely no response. With my final conversation, I decided that this was just not worth pursuing, and requested him to return the camera. I don't know what is wrong with this business, but this is absolutely unacceptable behavior for any company. Their multiple, conflicting excuses for their poor communication, and difficulty fixing the camera are, to say the least, suspicious. It is a horrible and disrespectful way to treat customers. I would highly recommend avoiding sending anything to Spencer's camera. You will be taking a significant risk with your expensive equipment. read more

My husband dropped off his Sony A73 to get the HDMI port repaired...over a YEAR AND A HALF ago! He's called numerous times, emailed a bunch-nothing! I'm pretty sure we've been robbed! I dropped off one of my favorite Canon 18-135 USM lens for a cleaning in August of 2021. It's March of 2022. I've called multiple times, left messages. I've talk to someone that say's they'll call back with an update status, left my number multiple times. NOTHING!!! At this point, it's Theft! I have my serial number registered on Canon's website for proof of ownership! I can't believe you guys do business like this in times like this. Spencers is the local Irix lens service center in the Utah area. I had an Irix lens needing repair due to focus issues. He had the lens over two years and offered nothing but excuses. I could not even get him to return the lens as not repairable. The issue was (more or less) resolved when I went to the state division of consumer protection and filed a complaint. I ended up with a different size wide angle lens. Not what I had wanted but was equal value. read more

I seldom go out of my way to write a bad review but I feel I must share my personal experience and warn others. I had a brand-new camera converted to astro photography in August 2021 by Spencer's Camera. It worked for about a month and then locked up: I then sent it in to Spencer's for repair. While it was in for repair, I spoke to directly to Clarence Spencer, asking him what was wrong with the camera and could they convert to full spectrum, he said yes. The problem required some parts, full issue not disclosed. I indicated I would pay for both, please bill me. After a month the camera arrived, no bill and no confirmation of work done. I called and spoke with Clarence Spenser again inquiring if the full spectrum work had been done and he said yes. I asked him what did I owe him and he said nothing which I thought was strange. Well, it wasn't done, I shot for six months as a reported "full spectrum camera" and found out only when I contacted Rob Shea, an infrared photographer, for some coaching, that the camera was not full spectrum. That diagnosis was confirmed by Kolari Vision, who performed the conversion at a cost of $525. I wrote Clarence Spencer three weeks ago and received no response. Given reviews by others and my own experience, I don't think this is an isolated instance. Camera converters beware. read more

Not sure. I sent a Canon full frame body in for a full spectrum astro mod and got the entire works. Removed IR/UV cut filter, also removed the AA filter, and also got the internal heat reduction system added. The turnaround time was roughly 3-4 weeks. read more

I sent my camera to Spencer's to replace the sensor, which was scratched. I paid extra for fast service. Not only did I not get fast service but the sensor they installed and set back to me was so dirty that I had to have it cleaned. It had to have been a used sensor although I paid hundreds of dollars for a brand new sensor. I will never do business with this outfit again. read more

My experience with Spencer Camera has been good to very good. I ordered a "full spectrum conversion with cooling enhancement" on my Pentax K-1. They did a competent job, and the camera was returned quickly. I bought several filters for IR, visible, etc. and they were good quality and shipped when promised. I spent around $900 and got my money's worth. I also signed up and paid in advance for a seminar/workshop. I had problems with the high altitudes at Bryce and had to turn back at the last minute. They worked with me to provide a refund and were pretty fair about it. So, I would recommend them as a competent and fair vendor for this kind of stuff. My only caveat is that this is a small business that requires considerable customer "hand-holding" due to the technical nature of the products and services. You may not get an instant response to your comms, and sometimes some details fall into the cracks. My guess is that they are snowed with this sort of stuff, be patient and helpful. read more

I have just finished the most amazing astrophotography retreat. I tried last year one in Maine with a different company and felt like I wasted my money. When I applied here, I asked if their staff would be able to help me as I am a beginner in this hobby. I decided to try, and I must say that this was an incredible experience. The national parks in Moab are simply breathtaking but also crowded. Clarence Spencer, our wonderful instructor and of course the owner of Spencer Camera is a very gifted teacher. He directed us to spots of great beauty that were also not as popular with the general public and thus better for taking pictures. He spent as much time as an of our small (10 people) needed. Clarence is very patient and did not mind if he had to go over an item a number of times. After the photo sessions, we were given 2 excellent tutorials on how to process our pictures. These were recorded and will be sent out for reference when we process our own photos at home. I cannot praise Clarence and the entire experience too much. I am already planning a return trip next year to continue my new hobby. read more

Price was right but service is horrible. Camera came back much later than estimated. Had particles all over the sensor. Having issues with picture clarity (tried multiple lenses and filters so it's a camera body issue.) No replies to any emails. Finally reached someone on the phone that said they would look into it and I could ship it back for cleaning and any repairs. They never followed up with me. This makes me sad. I dropped off a camera several months ago. My camera is a discontinued and rare camera. Spencer's Camera said they could fix it. It only needed repair of the audio input, one audio channel was not working. I knew that finding a part would be difficult as it is a discontinued, but they took on the task. It has been several months. I call, text, email and Clarence avoids any communication. I am patient as we order new parts. But none of the commitments to timelines are met. The last time I talked to him was a month ago (I am surprised he answered), I got a commitment for a weekly update... I have heard nothing. I feel like my camera is being held hostage. I just hope I get it back in at least the condition I gave it to him in. I want communication from him. If the part is hard to find, that is okay, just let me know. My experience mimics that of other one star reviews here. This makes me sad, don't bring your camera here. read more

I took a lens to them because I was leaving for a national park and needed it soon. The barrel was stuck in a limited range, but otherwise worked just fine. I dropped it off on June11th I was told it would be done "mid next week" (June 20th). They never once contacted me, I had to keep calling and texting to get any information. They said the lens was ready on 6/29, one day before I was leaving. I drove 45 minutes to pick it up and when I got home I discovered that now it would not lock focus. I NEVER had an issue with focus before they "repaired" it. I had a friend drop it off again on July 5th to get this issue fixed. (I was on vacation now and had to RENT a lens). AUGUST 1st I got the lens back again, STILL will not lock focus. I ended up sending it to Nikon for repair and they had to fix the same part I was told Spencer's replaced. When I contacted Spencer's to let them know what happened, he said "It more than likely only need minor adjustments and not all the work they performed" Could never get any answers from them or credit for paying to get it repaired twice. I also found out through this awful experience that they are NOT a certified repair center for Nikon. So good luck to any other sucker out there. read more

I ordered an IR flash modification in May of 2012. It is July of 2013 and I have not received anything from them. I only remembered this as I was cleaning out some old receipts. The first four months after the order I tried numerous times to contact you and get an update on my repair. Every time I call, someone tells me that it is almost done and should ship out by the end of the week or within a week, that was in July of 2012. I was informed that there was a delay due to not having the right size and type of filter to cover the flash head but I was only informed this after several calls. I specifically bought this flash (Canon 430 EZ) to use as a dedicated IR flash for my IR camera, and if I knew that this would be a problem I would have bought a different flash. I even emailed ahead of time to make sure that the conversion could be done before I bought this flash, they said yes and that it would take 10 working days. well its has been 295 work days (429 calender days). they still have the flash I sent in to get converted and the money I paid to convert it. read more

I felt compelled to write this review of Spencer's Camera to offer an objective account of my recent experience with this business. After seeing so many negative, "tale of woe" reviews posted to forums such as "dpreview" and "cloudynights," most of which were several years old, I thought a more recent perspective might be helpful to someone looking for a business offering this particular service. After doing a bit of research, and despite the plethora of old, negative on-line reviews mentioned above, I sent Spencer's a brand-new Canon DSLR for astro modification. This was in October of 2017. Here's my experience: 1) The modification service took approximately one month. I did not call and/or e-mail them excessively during that time to inquire when the job would be finished - I just waited patiently. Personally, I don't consider one month for this type of service to be an excessive amount of time, though others may disagree. 2) The modification appears to have been performed competently and professionally. The camera works perfectly, is scrupulously clean, and the sensor free of dust and other contaminants. The camera was well packaged and returned by Priority Mail. 3) I received a polite response to a telephone inquiry I made - so in my experience, they do answer their phone. 4) I did not receive a promised e-mail to let me know the camera was completed and shipped - it just showed up at my door one day. So, I would have to say communication was somewhat lacking in that regard. 5) I looked up Spencer's BBB rating, which is A+. This is completely at odds with what a poster at one of the previously mentioned forums stated about their BBB rating. So, in checking the source, it appears there's no problem with their BBB rating. In all, I'm satisfied with the service, quality of work, and value I received from Spencer's Camera - and would recommend them to someone looking for a provider to perform a similar modification for their DSLR. read more

I had a D800 converted to IR. There are black spots on the sensor, which are getting worse. I wrote them twice and they never wrote back.

I've used Spencer Cameras for several repairs over the past 8 years. He does a great job and has fair prices. I highly recommend

I've used other camera repair / lens cleaning shops in the past, but now strictly use Spencer's Camera. They are extremely busy, and I've had to wait a week longer than other service centers, but his quality of service more than makes up for it. BEWARE...Before reading my review and trusting me, just start by looking at some of the other 1 star reviews. DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAMERA HERE...I dropped my camera off over 6 months ago for a simple power board replacement. When I dropped the camera off they told me it would probably take a few weeks but they would reach out to me when it was done. After two months of waiting I finally emailed Spencer's camera to see what was going on. First they told me it was fixed but they were just working on a flickering issue, so I waited another month, then I asked again and they told me they were waiting on a part from canon, so I waited more, then I asked a 3rd time and they told me the part was discontinued (If it was discontinued, why not at least contact me and tell me to come pick up my camera). Even if this was all true not once in a 6 month period did they ever try and contact me to keep me updated and sometimes took weeks to answer if not at all. Finally I got fed up and went to pick up my still broken camera....This is where it gets EXCITING! First they literally tried to give me back the wrong camera, then he gave me back the correct camera with all the screws missing. I asked for the screws and he said "that's all you get". I tried to record him saying they weren't even going to give me back the rest of my parts (for legal reasons) but he saw me pull out my camera and promptly slammed the door in my face (see video below). Needless to say I filed a police report and won't be going back there...I also wouldn't recommend anyone else go there either...Unless you want to get back a broke camera with less parts than you dropped it off with. Guess I will have to take them to court now.... read more

I had a Nikon D800e DSLR converted for astro-imaging over a year ago. Along with the full spectrum modification I also had the heat transfer system installed. Since that time I have also purchased from our local Camera shop a Nikon D810a (Nikon's astro camera). Both are fine cameras but I prefer to use the Spencers' converted D800e due to the head reduction system. This is especially noticeable during these hot summer nights. Spencer's delivered on my conversion .....I have since recommended them to others in our Astronomy club and to my knowledge they too are totally satisfied. I can't remember how long it took - but I don't think it was much more than two weeks from the time I shipped the camera until it was returned. read more
