I had heard such raving reviews about Dr. Wherley's dental practice from several family members. Each person said that Dr. Wherley was a very experienced dentist who was not only very knowledgeable but verrrrrry gentle and very kind to his patients. Historically, I have always loved going to the dentist, (sounds crazy but it's true!), and have had very positive experiences with my dentist and orthodontist growing up. In fact, at age 46, I still wear my retainers to bed every night! I excitedly booked an appointment with Spectrum Dental, anticipating a very positive experience. The gal at the front desk, Katy, was an absolute delight and very easy to work with. Unfortunately, I was thoroughly disappointed with my dental cleaning provided by their one and only hygienist. This young gal was condescending, with an inability to effectively listen. I have had bonds on my two front teeth and she "cautioned" me about getting the bonds changed out too often as that will impact adhesion and longevity. I explained to her that I am actually OK as I have had the bonds 31 years. She then "instructed" me not to bite into things with my two front teeth. Again, I have had the bonds for 31 years, I am aware of what I can and cannot do given the bonds. This is not my first rodeo. She continued by asking me what my summer plans are. I responded with "Oh, we are still figuring out what we are doing this summer". She said, "Oh you're not going anywhere." No, that's not actually what I said. She did not listen. As she was cleaning my teeth, she gauged my gums. I winced in pain, but she continued anyway. When I explained to her that what she was doing was hurting me, she still persisted. I told her "I need you to stop", and she explained why she had to keep going, and I finally had to draw a boundary to say "NO". I ended the appointment early, without even seeing Dr. Wherley, in pain and in disgust. I was STILL bleeding when I left, (5-6 minutes after she had gauged me). I have never had such a negative dental experience. This hygienist, unfortunately, embodied the very negative millennial stereotype: inability to listen, self-righteous and a condescending "know-it-all". She would benefit from taking classes on learning how to actively listen while in a customer service role. I found out yesterday that Dr. Wherley is retiring in 5 weeks. Based on my experience yesterday, it is clear that the future of this dental practice does not embody the same gentleness or kindness that Dr. Wherley embodies. I've always hated the dentist and have such anxiety going, but the staff here are so amazing and patient and help me in every way they can. Dr. Yev checks in with me throughout and makes sure I'm okay, and he does amazing quality work. Diana the dental assistant is so amazing, she held my hand through the shots, gave me a blanket when I was cold, and when I was shaking she helped me picture a calm environment to calm me down. I read through Yelp reviews for a dentist, because I needed to call one at 7am, and be seen immediately. Any damage and the crown would have to be remade, plus I had no front right tooth. (Ah, yuck?) so I could easily fall prey to an evil dentist and be ripped off . This faux tooth was an investment. A woman missing a front tooth is also a woman in distress, not making decisions from her Most Reasonable Self. She will pay most anything to be retoothed, especially in the light of day, believe. Dr. Wherley's Administrator is friendly, and gives good directions. She also gave me a follow up call with the name of a periodontist-- three weeks after I had had the crown reattached. She remembered a conversation had in passing and actually called me. Rare, indeed! Dr. Wherley himself...efficient, polite, and proud of his work... he eliminated some discoloration when he remounted my crown, and it looked much better. He didn't try to sell me on future appointments. He said "You have a lot of work done. I assume you are taking care of it?" I said yes, he said good, mentioned the next weakest crown so I would be aware of it and got the job done. Nice dentist, friendly staff, AND inexpensive. It cost me $145 less than it would have in California (where I just moved from). Maybe $105 was reasonable for Denver, but it is unheard of in San Francisco. Am happy I checked Yelp on this one. He's old school...I didn't see any cosmetic advances being pitched in the waiting room. Thankfully. Those are so obnoxious. read more

I'm 23 years old and have only had one dentist my entire life. You guessed it, Dr. Wherley. He's gotten me through baby teeth, crooked adult teeth, braces, countless retainers, and finally to my adult-like smile. My entire family refuses to switch; my mother even lives in Cheyenne, Wyoming now, and brings my stepdad along with her. It's true, he's worth the 100 mile journey. Frankly, we all worry about what we're going to do when the man retires. Knock on wood that it's not anytime soon. In the mean time, he's definitely an excellent choice. read more

Perhaps the best dentist I've had, I've been going to Dr. Wherley for the last two years. He runs a small practice, and it feels more homey than most dental practices I've been to, and yet he has digital X-rays and all the modern machinery you'd expect. The office staff is first rate, and his hygienist is nice but thorough. Their work has been good and there's no sale pitches for cosmetic work. It's easy to get in to see him, and billing is well done and reasonable. The location is convenient for me, at Colorado and Cherry Creek Drive. Dr. Wherley and his staff are great! I was recently visiting the Denver area and needed to get in for an emergency visit and they worked me into the schedule the same day. The staff was friendly and courteous when greeting me. They gave me a realistic wait time to be expected (I didn't mind waiting 15 minutes as I knew they already had to for me in). Once I got in, Dr. W did just enough so that I was out of pain and to get me through the rest of my trip. He did not try to overcharge me or provide services that were not needed. He was very clear on what procedures were completed and let me know what he thought the next steps would be when I saw my primary dentist. I went here about two weeks ago for a regular cleaning. I picked Dr. Wherley after peeping through the yelp reviews, as I needed a new dentist (see my other reviews for my last Dentists' office...which I do not recommend...). It was a great experience! First of all, I called one other place first, and they could not get me in for about a month. I didn't want to wait a month, and decided to try Dr. Wherley. Surprisingly, when I called he actually answered (Wow, a Dr. that's not too cool to answer his office's phone when the front is busy?? I like it.), and got me in the very next morning! So, I headed over there, and when I walked in, the receptionist already knew my name (from the appt. time probably), and very politely introduced herself to me & shook my hand. Nice and personal! After I filled out standard new patient stuff, Dr. Wherley came out and also introduced himself to me and shook my hand. I was next impressed because the doctor did my cleaning- I've been to several offices where I only ever see the actual dentist for about 3 minutes after the hygienist does all the work. I appreciate that he did all the work- from X-Rays to cleaning ect. Also, the guy is just enjoyable. He talks a little when you're able to speak, (doesn't try to make conversation during the cleaning, that drives me nuts since you can't exactly talk back) and tells you all about whatever is going on with your teeth. Also, I am paranoid about X-Rays, and his jacket already had the thyroid cover built in. Other dentists I've been to acted like I was a pain in the ass when I asked them to give me a thyroid cover during the X-Rays. I don't know what the big deal is to go grab the cover. Anyway, everything went very smoothly, and I am very pleased that I have a great new dentist now. read more

Dr. Wherley is the best dentist I have ever encountered, worldwide. I have 'problem' teeth and have had many, many dentist visits and work done over the years. Dr. Wherley has literally changed my compete look (and life!) by suggesting a simple procedure on my front teeth that no other dentist cared to do suggest before. Though the procedure made a huge difference in my appearance, the doctor made sure first that it will be covered by my insurance. The quality of care is amazing, everyone is super-nice (Gloria, Sandy, Kate, Darla - they have all been with Dr. Dan for years and cannot be called 'staff', they are more like family). I take my whole family there and cannot imagine going anywhere else. If something happens (chipped tooth) or someone has a toothache, the same day appointment is very likely. Where can you find that these days?! This practice is in a category of their own, setting standards of care and customer service. There is never more than a 5 minute wait and they are always more than happy to work with you on unexpected scheduling conflicts. They will take care of all your insurance coordination of benefits issues and keep you in the loop. It is obvious that his practice is much more to Dr. Dan than a business -- it is his vocation and his passion. Speaking of which, in his spare time he does free dental work for mentally and physically handicapped people. Dr. Dan is the man!!! :) read more
