I booked a one-time pottery class at Speckles + Splatter with my friend for her birthday - she lives within walking distance of this awesome shop and this shop is in such a prime area of Dearborn - just a block down and over from downtown Dearborn and very easily accessible! I found this shop through the recommendation of another friend who had done their 6-week course here where they learned how to throw clay and then got to spend the remainder of the time just making any and all pieces to their hearts desire! For our pottery class, it was definitely very beginner and with a few more guidelines/boundaries. We were all given a certain amount of clay and led through the basics of how to shape clay on a pottery wheel. From there, we were able to shape it up into general "pot" shapes. Unfortunately, this clay/glaze/method is not food-safe, so my dreams of making a little matcha bowl for myself were dashed! But I still had a super fun time getting reacquainted with pottery after my few weeks of pottery class in my senior year of college before I realized it was going to be a bit too much for me and dropped the course LOL! NOTE: I would highly recommend not doing this class if you've got long acrylics/longer nails! My nails were at their longest length (had been growing them out for about 2 months I believe?) and it made it extremely difficult to shape the clay! The instructor is super helpful no matter what and gives you tips and workarounds for people with long nails, but I'd just recommend cutting them short (if possible) before this class as I think I would've done a way better job if I had done that with mine! All in all though, the instructor is so knowledgeable about all the potential and actual pitfalls people might make during this class and is super helpful in general in calling these out before they happen or helping you fix your clay after you do! I really enjoyed this class and I think my friend did too! Her and her husband are interested, especially given how close they live to the studio, in doing the 6-week course/membership where you can throw to your heart's content and I really hope they do that! I would easily do it too if it weren't located this far from me, but I'm over here considering it regardless of the distance because I had that great of a time! read more

This was such a cool experience. The location was clean and the set up was nice! However, the service was awful. The front desk receptionist was rude and had no customer service skills. And our instructor was extremely passive aggressive and VERY judgmental. It was hard to enjoy myself when she was very harsh and critical to everyone's project-- as if we weren't all beginners. I even wanted to take a weekly course but I'll never bring my service back here unfortunately. I don't remember her name but it takes much more than pottery skills to be a good teacher, please hire more friendly instructors that make the course worth it :) read more

We had to ask for so many paint changes and fillings but each time she was so helpful and got us what we needed. My best friend and I wanted something new to do and something fun! This was an absolute wonderful place to stop in and visit. We met the owner, Aman/Matti, and assistant(?) artist, Ms. Kelly. Both who were so wonderful and kind! When we arrived it was close to 430 and we took forever to decide what we wanted to do. They have so many items to choose from on the shelves and it was nice to see the prices listed right on the shelving with it. They have a nice selection of colors that you pick out six from and they have no problem providing you other colors or refills on your selected colors. The staff are super helpful and do wonderful work of their own which is so beautiful! If you don't want to do a clay figurine you can do a wall plaque, mosaic, or ornament. We had a group of 6 and we all had a pretty good time. The rest of the ladies decided to paint and I did a mosaic. You can chose from different things to paint and do mosaic on. Prices depend on the item you're choosing. I got to take my mosaic home - they give you instructions for grouting at home. The items you paint you have to leave behind so they can fire it up with the kiln. I think you go back the next weekend to retrieve. All in all it was a good time. When I went in the entire time me and my friends felt judged by the employees, they did not give us clear directions on what to do. The bowl I pained ended up breaking in the kiln they called me and told me I would get a refund, after a long THREE MONTHS of me calling them I still have NOT gotten my money back I have called numinous times and every time they told me my refund should hit my account in 1-5 business days. April is just delightful and super helpful and if you're a newbie, she takes the time to explain the whole painting process. What I also find great about this place is the super great level of organization. Everything is accounted for. From the paint color tile grids, to the ceramic selections... it all makes sense and is helpful in ones understanding of pottery painting and glaze. They also have wood painting and offer classes and different events throughout the month. And the place itself is huge and spacious. I went the first time for a clay-building mug class. I absolutely loved it and the outcome of it. I then went back to pain the mug and create a mosaic piece and I loved that as well. I recently went back with my little cousins and created a plate that I attached the picture of below. I went a week ago with a friend to their pottery wheel class where I created a bowl. Although their classes are a bit on the pricier side, everything that you learn in the class and what you do and take home ends up being worth every penny. What a great concept, it's truly something our community needed! The studio is lovely, organized and the atmosphere is perfect to just relax with a good piece is art work. The owners were so attentive and everyone looked like they were enjoying their time. There are small pieces of ceramics, wood work and mosaics to be finished and personalized. Prices range from a few dollars to around $50+ so there is something for everyone. The dedication of the staff shows through in their attention to detail and willingness to help or give advice.
