I've been visiting Creative Arts Studio for months now and have been overjoyed every time pottery painting! The studio has many small and large tables to accommodate all types of groups. Premade pottery and paint line the walls; which you pick out. The staff do an excellent job assisting with paint recommendations and refilling materials as needed. You are charged for the price of the pottery item plus a Studio Fee. The Studio Fee is $8 for adults and $6 for children. After painting, you pick up your pottery items about a week later. My wife and I signed up for a one hour wheel throwing pottery class. We go there about 15 minutes before the start of our class, as they request that people do. We were able to park on the street right around the block. When we got inside of the studio, there were a lot of people painting pottery. We were told they were still preparing the pottery wheels and would come get us when it was time to go in. We were in the session with two other couples. Our instructor, Janeh, was the best pottery teacher I could have ever imagined for our first time ever working with clay on a pottery wheel. She was very engaging, very understanding of our (lack of) skills, and had a great sense of humor. I never felt talked down to or anything like that, even when we all made mistakes. It was a great time, and I cannot recommend the experience enough. I gave 4 stars instead of 5 because I always felt like we were on a real time crunch there and that they might have been short handed to be able to service everyone. There were some times we were left unattended or had to wait as they processed large lines of people. Definitely not a reflection on Janeh, but something I noticed about the place in general. read more

I typically come for walk-in pottery painting, but have also joined for a ceramic Christmas tree painting class, and well as a glass fusing class. They offer several different types of classes, multiple pottery pieces to choose from, and have reasonable prices. Another plus is that they also offer snacks and drinks available for purchase, which is great. The staff knowledgeable, friendly, and always willing to help with a project. This place is a great beginner spot to learn about using the wheel. I recommend taking the intro to the wheel. I am pretty impressed with the staff and I fell in love with my piece in the end. There are other classes that is worth checking out! Overall, I recommend it! You have to patient because after you throw it on the wheel and paint it the day of. I've been here a few times and it's overall a good place. Lots of glaze and pottery options. However, the last time I went here I was waiting in a short line to get glaze and a white teenage girl threw glaze all over me in front of a staff member and her mother. Neither the girl, the staff member, nor her mother said anything to me at all. I didn't even get an unapologetic "sorry." They just stared at me and I just stood there, covered in glaze, staring back at them. I ended up leaving without finishing my piece because it just felt a little racially motivated like there's no reason as to why that kind of a situation should have unfolded the way it did at their big ages. I have also been going to different pottery painting places across the midwest because I've moved a few times over the years and I have never even witness any little kids making that kind of "mistake". I'm not sure about anyone else but if I got even a drop of glaze on someone else's clothes I would be profusely apologizing. If I ever spilled a whole bottle of anything that is hard to remove on someone I would be offering to dry clean, or repurchase that persons clothes regardless of if it was an accident or not. We found this place from RIO Michigan Adventures Royal Oak. We we took a day trip to the Eastside. Direction in GPS took us right there. Thankfully there was a parking garage across the street so parking was easy. There is street parking but everything was full on a Sunday. I can't even imagine what it would be like on the weekday or Friday/Saturday. Parking in the garage first 2 hours free. We were considered a walk in appointment. It was very busy. I got in line but found an associate walking by and asked where I should be. I was told to wait up front while they checked out the party in front of us. The line went quick, and we were placed at a table for three. If we wanted to walk away with a project the only thing we could make would be a Mosaic piece. We decided on a painted piece with the expectation that we will be back in a week to collect the piece because it has to be processed. We were given instructions on paint, given water and brushes then left to our own devices. Everyone was friendly, there were a ton of paint options and brush options. The environment was chaotic and tight space to get around everything from picking your piece to paint to picking your colors but somehow everything works systematically. Having a bulky jacket and purse did not make it any better but we hung them off our chairs and hoped to not get paint on anything. We were successful. Its an art environment. Lots of creative ideas. Classes in back spinning pottery, families, parties and individuals all collectively together to design, paint and make memories. Looking forward to the final results. Will know In a week. Total cost was under $100 for the three of us. Prices are based on cost of item you select and each person has a studio fee. They take credit card and we were down in under 2 hours. What a fun way to spend an afternoon! I had so much fun painting my bowl and hanging out with friends. We came on a Sunday and were able to walk-in with 3 people. Overall I think I paid about $30 with the studio fee for this bowl, so not bad! The only thing I would think is an issue for this place is it's not very accessible and the walkways are pretty narrow. We came in for Father's Day with my husband, toddler, and my dad (who is 82). This place is perfect for ANY AGE! My dad left and said "I really enjoyed that. Cool place: $8 for adults/$6 for kids + cost of the ceramic piece for open studio to paint the ceramic piece of your choice. Costs of the ceramics varies greatly depending on how large/intricate the item is. The cheapest sculpted piece that I saw was $9, but there were also smaller items...the selection of ceramics is quite vast. My nephews and I spent about 3 hours painting our pieces here. The staff was very patient and helpful. I have been to other studios of this nature and one thing I liked about here is that they specify two different types of paint. One of the paints is recommended for kids because the glazing technique (some sort of dipping, i believe) that is used with that particular paint will allow the paints to blend better if there are any blank areas that may be left on the ceramic. I intentionally had my nephews use that paint and I used the other paint to see the difference in the outcomes once they were glazed. My nephews pieces turned out very nicely despite the blank areas . The pieces are ready in a week for the glazing. Another great thing about this studio is that they offer so much more than just ceramic-painting activities. They also offer various classes + open studio to create jewelry, wax hands, etc. They can even create personalized items. The open studio area is a tad cramped with the tables/seating being close together amongst all the art materials. Parking is also an issue, After all it is dwntwn Royal Oak. However, there is a large public parking structure nearby, but I am not sure what the cost is. I visited on a Sunday, so there was no fee ;-) read more

Thank you for an awesome experience for my nieces and I! The instructor was amazing. We were there for the younger ones 7th birthday, and when she would eventually go out of lines / mix colors, she would get frustrated and turn it into an abstract piece. Our instructor encouraged her and let her use two canvasses herself so my other neice and I could finish ours which I thought was generous. But as our instructor finished her teaching piece, she gave it to my neice to touch up so she could have a unicorn painting to bring home too. I expected the lesson to be instructional, but her ability to work so well with children was above and beyond. Thank you!!! read more

Pricy pricy pricyyyyyy! I took my little sister here as she's never done any type of pottery before and was pretty shocked by the prices. I did an awesome shark popping out of a life raft bowl ($48) and she did the bow tie monster ($12.50). They charge an $8 fee per person that includes all the paint and firing but I wasn't expecting to pay $80 for two pieces. Price aside, it was a lot if fun! You wait one week from the day you painted to pick it up. When we came there was a HUGE party of kids; probably 20-30 under the age if 15 so it was veryyyyyy noisy. Next time I go I'd call before just to make sure I don't feel like I'm sitting in on a middle school art class lol read more

We took a wheel throwing class and it is so not worth the money. They got 2 stars from me because the lady was so nice sweet and up beat otherwise I would have said zero to one. The moment I walked in I was overwhelmed by yelling kids, no where to stand in line the front desk lady was super overwhelmed as well. Thankfully we went in the back where it was quite that is also why they got a star as well because it was almost a privet room and that part was good. I have nothing else positive to say though. I was so disappointed about the lesson. My son has been waiting a long time to learn pottery and has such a passion for it. We touched the clay three to 4 times that's it for real!!! They threw the clay and centered it and even started the whole thing before we got there. It felt rushed like in and out. I was told it's an hour class where you learn to make a pot and then you paint it. It was 15 mins total of touching clay the lady pretty much does it for you and it felt like she was afraid we would mess it up. Like who freaking cares if you do you just throw it again and start over it takes two mins. I was just so disappointed in this experience and it was not worth 100 bucks for two.​ read more

I love going to the Creative Arts Studio when I need wedding gifts. They do such an amazing job there. I have gone in multiple times with a vision of what I want and they are able to create it for me at a reasonable cost. My only complaint is that one time they broke one of my items in the kiln and they never contacted me to alert me of this issue. It wasn't until two months later when I called that I was told the project was destroyed and needed to be refunded. A friend talked me into going to Creative Arts Studio. I did not think it would be my thing but went along anyway. Apparently I was being a snob with a BFA because we ended up having fun (stable glaze that I did not have to make!). Giving a rating is a bit difficult. This review is primarily based on the experience as a result. My friend and I had a good experience, however, as others have mentioned, the cost is pretty pricey. It does depend on which piece of pottery you choose and what you do with it. I painted a soup bowl and my friend a medium sized sushi plate. I do like that there was a flat $8 painting fee. Especially as it took us three different trips to actually finish (mainly my fault). The fee is one time, so you can take your time and return as needed. I think this activity could be more expensive/difficult with some children, especially younger ones. They have good amount of glaze options (though people, please, close the lids!). The brushes are pretty abused, I had a difficult time finding a fine bristled brush (I would suggest bringing your own). All of the staff that we encountered were friendly and helpful. They do have other options including jewelry and mosaic making as well. I did not check the prices on either activity. They had a birthday party during the last visit, though it was contained in a back room and did not bother us at all. read more

Came here for my friend's birthday to do a group painting. The concept is definitely unique, different than the normal painting with a twist. We had a 2 hour reservation for the painting. First, I feel like our instructor could have been more attentive and better at explaining what to do. Second, my friend's stencil was apparently too large and it didn't fit the canvas. (Which should have been looked at by the instructor BEFORE we got there) We realized that after it was too late, it was over our 2 hours and we had a dinner reservation to get to. The instructor offered to re-print the stencil but we were already late and left with an unfinished painting. I honestly think they should have took the painting off our bill since we didn't even finish it, but nothing was done. I'm just pretty disappointed with the whole interaction, and how we still got charged for an unfinished painting. read more

I love coming here to paint and be creative, there is more than just pottery painting to do. Saturday nights are kid free too, beware of Sundays as they tend to be a little nuts! There is a large variety of pottery to chose from, it is a bit pricey so expect to pay around $25-$30 for a decent sized piece. We usually give the kids a budget to spend on pottery to keep our budget in line. I've painted things as gifts and those always go over well. I really like their selection of piggy banks, I've painted a dog, a unicorn, and a stack of three penguins. The atmosphere is pretty laid back and the prices are very reasonable. $8 per person for painting, glazing and supplies (if you're sharing a piece I think it's just $10) + the cost of the actual pottery piece that you pick. They have a variety of pieces for different prices. My only complaint is, the pottery chips easily (after the glaze). We also paid for shipping and they never got sent. We had to call a month later and the ticket had been marked as not to ship. I have been coming to this studio for a number of years and have been happy with the experience and the completed projects. This time I painted pineapple salt and pepper shakers. I was very disappointed to discover that some green paint was on the finished products where there should only be yellow paint. I took them in and showed the person at the entrance of the studio. She thought the paint was due to someone bumping them against another project when placed in the kiln. I asked if there was anything that could be done in the future to prevent this issue and all she said was that other staff members handle that part of the process. She did not offer me any money back, a credit for next time, and no plan to prevent the problem in the future. I am very disappointed. read more
