My husband and I live just a few blocks away from Sparrow's Grille and keep saying, "We've got to go there!" Well, we finally went and are already making plans to return. Sparrows Grille is on the Victoria Hills golf course in DeLand Florida. My husband and I went on a Sunday during brunch and it wasn't crowded at all. It's a well-lit (with natural light from all of the windows plus a few chandeliers), spacious bar and grill space with indoor as well as outdoor seating. Our server was friendly and attentive and the ambiance was calm. We began our meal by ordering the chicken wings - as we've heard that they're a fan favorite. They were good-sized and cooked perfectly! We chose to try half of them tossed in mild sauce with the other half tossed in garlic Parmesan. I honestly liked both sauces equally. For my entree, I ordered off of the brunch menu and had a "make your own omelette" with cheese, ham and mushrooms. It came with home fries and toast. It was all delicious! My husband opted for the wedge salad and he enjoyed his dish as well! He remarked that he was surprised that the meal wasn't "more expensive" as the restaurant is on a golf course. So, good food at a good price that's only a few blocks from us? We're definitely coming back! read more

Went here tonight with family members, and we were extremely disappointed. The place was not very crowded and took forever for us to get our meal. Which was simple burgers, wings and wedge sale. The burger tasted like a frozen pre made pattie, Bla tasteless with a limp piece of lettuce on it that was over cooked. Fries were disappointing as well, should have been the fabulous Parmesan garlic fries but mine were not and not very many of them. The wings were ok, but nothing outstanding. Maybe they need a new cook? Won't go back for a while or until I hear the food has changed. The plus our server was very friendly and pleasant and it was clean. read more

We went last night to try their Friday Prime Rib special, only to find they had a new chef who has changed the menu. Prime Rib was not available, and was replaced with three special dishes, one each featuring steak, chicken and fish. All three were priced at $25/plate. We inquired as to whether other weekly specials had been cancelled, but no one could answer that question. We ordered the Churrasco Steak, which arrived with maybe 6 small skewers of meat, covered with a spicy Chimichurri sauce, and accompanied by mashed potatoes, yellow rice and pico-de-gallo. It was an elegant presentation, but the meal was over-priced and not to our taste. Beyond that, the restaurant was short-staffed for a Friday evening, and we were given a lunch menu with no mention of the daily specials. We requested a dinner menu and were given a one-page flyer describing the three specials. This was our fourth dinner at Sparrow's since moving to Deland last fall. The bar and dining room are decorated pub/tavern style and are quite comfortable. The lunch menu is limited, but not unexpected for a golf club restaurant. We have previously eaten their Thursday Wing Special on two occasions and their Friday Fish 'N Chips Special, both of which we thoroughly enjoyed. We enjoyed these meals so much that we have taken our new neighbors there. But alas, change is not always for the better. Last night's experience foreshadows an increased price structure and the loss of our favorite dishes. We do not expect to return. Too bad because the location is very close to home. read more

Definitely disappointed to walk into our usual brunch stop to find a completely different menu, higher prices but not higher quality to justify the increase. And the worst part....the new owners apparently got rid of our favorite thing about Sparrows...Connie! Actually SHE was the only reason we went there. If there was a logical explanation, I would feel different, but no reasonable explanation whatsoever. Thank you Sparrows new owners....now we have to find a new brunch place. Wow! Haven't been here in a long time, but brought my Mom for Easter brunch today and all I can say is wow! They have a new chef and he is spot on! It's possible to mess up an omelette, but today... I can say hands-down the best omelette I have ever had! And breakfast potatoes... Nobody raves about breakfast potatoes but I'm doing right now! Service was pretty outstanding, too. Highly recommend! This was their standard brunch menu and not a special Easter menu... You can get the awesome omelette, too! read more

This is not the place to go expecting to have a conversation with friends. The vaulted ceiling' and lack of sound deadening material made it impossible to hear each other unless they were right next to you. The food was average. I ordered a salad which included one scoop of tuna and one scoop of chicken salad. Both were very dry and I can't imagine eating either one on bread. I also had a hard time determining which one I was eating. It came with fruit in large slabs. Maybe this is nit picky but I would have been appreciated to have them cut into chunks. The sandwiches looked good and my friends were happy with their selections. They were not so happy with the soup. Too much cheese in the cream of broccoli. Go if you're nearby but there are better options in the area. read more

Nope nope nope. Arrived at sunset to relax and enjoy a cesar's salad. This was place has potential since it's backing a beautiful nature setting. I ordered a cesar salad. It arrived on a WARM plate, the lettuce was SLIMY, WILTED AND BROWN. So I asked the waitress to take it back because it was inedible. She explained that they leave the food out in trays all day so the lettuce became stale. Good thing I didn't order a meat-based dish. Despite that I live five minutes away from this cesspool, I will never go back. read more

Wonderful experience for an event at Victoria Hills Golf Club. We had a celebration for 50 guests in the Azalea Room and the event was well- managed by Sadia. The light-filled room is gorgeous with many windows and views of the golf course. The tables and linens were pretty and the room has a large projector with the ability to show photos. The charcuterie board was a hit with the guests, artistically created and something for everyone--meats, cheeses, fruits, chocolate covered strawberries. The servers were friendly, attentive to the guests, and helpful. Sadia and her Staff are top notch with attention to detail. Highly recommend as a venue to host an event. read more

Went there for past night, salad was left out in a table with no shield. Lady walked over sneezed all over the salad area. So gross.

We dropped in for pasta night and were pleasantly surprised at the quality. Instead of a standard buffet, they had two chefs manning stations where you chose the type of pasta and all the ingredients. They cook it for you right on the spot. I had an Alfredo sauce with fresh shrimp and mussels with white wine and garlic and my husband had a similar dish. The pasta night also includes a salad, bread and dessert. The food was really good and we will be back on another Wednesday for pasta night. read more

Wow! No prime rib in the Easter and Mother's Day buffets this year. Adjusted the buffet price by lowering it a bit. Our party of 12 didn't go to the Easter buffet and are not interested in the Mother's Day buffet. Not interested in all you can eat peel & eat shrimp, fish, chicken, and bad desserts. Would have gladly paid the price difference for the prime rib. What a shame! read more

This was the worse dining experience I have ever witnessed. We made reservations for 5:30pm were sat quickly and put in our order for burger night. We did not get out food until 6:45pm. One plate after another came out wrong. Then the topper of the night was the owner/chef did not communicate with the waitresses what the soup of the day was, which was the main course for two of our dinner party. The chef came out in a fury when he heard he messed up. He offered grits instead which a member of our party laughed (knowing that our grandmother would not eat grits) and yelled at her for laughing. He continued to yell at our entire party and then said we are lucky he came out from the kitchen. He then offered to comp our bill and laughed and said "you would like that wouldn't you." He then said "everyone in this community hates me." I have never been treated like this as guests in a restaurant. We ended with a waitress who felt bad for our experiences and full Bills for everyone. Everyone beware. Go for drinks, but not the food! read more

Never again! I live here and I'm so done with Sparrows. Waitress Megan disrespected me as I handed my waitress a coupon! How dare her talk about my table to another table about a coupon I wanted to use!!! She wasn't even my waitress as the other table was looking at us!! She should be fired!! I live in Victoria Park and I will never step foot in there again!!! I confronted her and she said smartly said back "yeah I did" and I saw stars and said a few words to Megan and Max the manager said he will speak to her. Is he kidding me, she admitted that right in front of the manager. How dare she speak to me like that! Terrible experience. We got bad attitude from management at a baby shower I attended here today. They refused to bring out the second tray of shrimp because the full count of guests didn't show up. They insisted on removing all the food an hour before the end of the event and gave us grief about getting boxes to make sandwiches for our husbands who were out on the golf course. Then they FLATLY REFUSED to let the hostess take the leftovers home - and she spent a fortune on the food!!! This place did not earn my love. read more

Got here at 6:10 pm on a Saturday night. We got an appetizer of French fries, and they didn't bring them to the table until 6:45. Slow service is an understatement. New menu, expensive and no options. No sandwiches no burgers. Pasta and fish and steak. Not enough choices for a family. Ended up leaving, they didn't get the order right and the all the food was disgusting and over priced. The lasagna was actually a tiny little dish lined with some kind of flatbread and full of dried up spinach. Gross. read more

The new sparrows has a fantastic kitchen. All dishes are made from scratch. We had crabcake salad, a fantastic creamy tomato soup with chicken and as the main course shrimp scampi which was based on aight olive oil sauce witch herbs, capers and some garlic over linguini. All made from scratch. The other day I had a fantastic burger there. The food is much better that one would expect for a place that serves lunch to hurried golfers. We had a great experience here yesterday at my sister's baby shower! Our server Megan was very attentive and made sure we had everything we needed, keeping up with a group of 20 is hard but she did a great job. Also, Lisa, the event planner was incredibly professional and took as much stress off of my parents as possible to make sure my sister had an amazing shower. I did see there was a review from yesterday regarding the same baby shower from a "Kela" which concerned me. Being the daughter of the hosts, I knew everyone there and have never met a "Kela." I do remember a Peggy though, that seemed to be complaining about us not being able to bring home food, which the hosts had agreed to in the contract. She actually wasn't even invited and really didn't have the right to complain. Overall, the hosts and all family and friends had nothing but great things to say about the shower, service and restaurant. We look forward to planning more events here in the future! read more
