Horrendous packaging of artwork by Sparrow Print-N-Ship, Summerville, SC, a n agent packing and shipping on behalf of UPS and FedEx

RUN AWAY!!! Horrific packaging, customer service and lying. If I could leave MINUS 5 stars I would. See included photos. If you value any article you are having Jennifer Spangler, the owner of Sparrow Print-N-Ship pack and ship, go elsewhere. We purchased a painting from a Summerville seller. Based on the website, the seller took the painting to Sparrow-Print-N-Ship for packing and shipping quotes to Canada and 2 US locations. The seller requested the art to be packaged well. Since we were not present during the discussions between the parties, we can only provide the facts known to us. Jennifer says she was given approximate dimensions and quoted Fedex Ground shipping rates for 3 locations. The seller provided exact dimensions and requested packaging and shipping quotations. Based on the quotes, we opted to ship to Canada for $369.34 including packaging. If Jennifer is knowledgeable in packing art as described, she would have provided a quote taking into account added dimensions for packaging. Jennifer and the seller called to inform that the painting after packaging was too large to ship Ground. That was odd since we have previously used Fedex and UPS to ship similar sized paintings. Jennifer requested $190.00 for the packaging alone. We found that exorbitant, but paid. We requested the package dimensions and found them in excess of permitted Ground shipping dimensions. We explained this to Jennifer and the seller. Jennifer should have known that since that is her business. We requested Jennifer to repackage the painting to fit within the guidelines for Ground shipping. Jennifer called us and stated in writing that she repackaged to 48"x48"x8". We thought this was still larger than required, but since it was within guidelines, requested her to ship. Next we received the excuse that her system "would not allow her" to create the shipping label and requested we create the shipping label ourselves. Hmmm. Strange. We could not create the Fedex label from Canada, which we explained to Jennifer but she was still unwilling to assist. We were able to create the shipping label via UPS for an amount of $717.68, double her original quote not including the $190.00 already paid for packaging. For Fedex and UPS even if dimensions are slightly larger, for example 48.2", the dimension is rounded to the nearest higher inch, so 49" in this case. We used the dimensions provided in writing by Jennifer, trusting her honesty. We asked Jennifer why she could not create the shipping label as we both used the same UPS system. She lied and said it was "internal company policy". At the time we did not realize that Jennifer is the CFO/manager/owner of Sparrow. We were shocked to receive a UPS adjustment bill for $1,768.67. A UPS audit measured 52"x51"x10". Not just a rounding difference, but a massive difference, implying Jennifer had not repackaged as promised. We emailed her asking about the adjusted bill. She again confirmed the dimensions as 48"x48"x8" and told us to contact UPS. We requested that she contact UPS to explain the discrepancy in her measurements to support having the adjustment reversed. She shirked responsibility, explaining we created the shipping label and it was not her responsibility. She under quoted packing and shipping and made excuses to avoid creating the shipping label, knowing the package was oversized and would incur penalties she would be. responsible for. After receiving the painting, we measured the package. UPS were correct and Jennifer lied. The packing looked like Jennifer had been taking lessons from a kindergarten class on how to pack art. UPS and Fedex sell art boxes. She should have purchased appropriate packing material as recommended by UPS and Fedex. It is possible to purchase a mirror box for shipping. The packaging received was a plethora of patched together pieces of cardboard taped together and wrapped in a large loose sheet of brown paper. She used bubble and foam wrap with a 6" gap between the painting and top of the box with no filler. No professional packing. No response yet from Jennifer.
