They have plenty of Apple parking although they have handicap parking you can sit at the counter or get a table order your food at the counter and they'll bring it right to you. Based on the look of it, I did give it a side eye. I'm used to my pastrami sandwich looking like a big pile of meat between a soft hoagie roll. This sandwich came thin & not with just the traditional mustard and pickles. It has grilled onions, mayonnaise. It was surprisingly good to me though, I loved every bite. Also, the bread comes toasted and I kinda enjoyed that too. My friend loves coming to this place so she recommended it (she raves about their kitchen sink) since she loves the people that work here.

Now, I read that this iconic Oakland Top Dog location is closing soon, due to a dispute with the new landlord. I figured I better get over her quick before it closes for good. https://www.sfgate.com/food/article/berkeley-top-dog-closing-oakland-location-21102867.php My Oakland guide, who grew up as a child in this Lakeshore Area, tells me of the old days here right at this location where the Top Dog is. It used to be a restaurant called Edy's and they had the best lime freezes. His mother used to take him here in the 1960's! I can't believe that was over 60 years ago! This Top Dog has been here for a long time, around 21 years. The little alley way that has an entrance to the Top Dog, now goes to Trader Joes, but he tells me that used to be a Lucky grocery store before. The parking structure wasn't there either. My guide is a long time Top Dog fan, from the original Berkeley locations. He even made friends with the girl cook at the north Berkeley location and ended up getting free hot dogs! He says the prices sure have gone up since the 70's ... a Kielbasa was just 70 cents! That's $4.50 now! This location runs like most locations, you just tell the cook what you want and the sausages are already cooked or cooking on the flat top grill. The buns get heated there too and then you have condiments to add. I've been a fan of Top Dog, more the Berkeley location, but it's sad to see this location close. Soon, it will just be the original Berkeley location open at the south campus.

I'm…read morenot that much of a frankfurter connoisseur, even though I have compared Coney dogs in Detroit between two classic purveyors, Lafayette Coney Island and American Coney Island. I wasn't looking for a Coney dog when I decided to stop by at Kasper's with a 'K'. I'm surprised I had never been here because it's in Oakland's familiar Dimond district. Kasper's is housed in a cool, mid-century vintage standalone building and has a parking lot like most fast food eateries back sometime in the last century. There were two people behind the counter, both obvious veterans who split responsibilities between dressing the dogs and handling the register. The menu was pretty straightforward: nine different dogs and a chili bowl plus soft drinks and fizzes. I was hoping they might have a Chicago dog but no such luck. Instead I went for the $7.39 Quarter Pound Dog with Chili ($1.29), Cheese ($0.99), and Diced Onion (free). So kinda like a Coney but not quite. Still quite tasty and filling as it was an all-beef dog with a massive amount of chili (photo: https://yelp.to/nG4KKo0L6Y). I dared to get a $1.69 bag of chips and a $3.05 Diet Coke, but in hindsight, I should've gone for an Orange Fizz to evoke my Orange Julius-filled childhood. I used to love those. Here at Kasper's you have your choice of toppings: pickle or saurkraut, with or without a tomato, and choice of mustard, ketchup, relish, or mayo. Was about $8. Interesting tidbit of history I learned wbile talking with the person who prepared my order: apparently Kasper's hot dog chain has been around since 1930 and started in the bay area with their first spot in Oakland.

I later discovered the one with a "C" in Hayward and have found they are more similar than different, product and menu wise. The only main difference are looks/interior of each place. I think there must have been some sort of split back in the day to form 2 different businesses that are so damn close in concept. But nowadays I think I'm more of a fan of the one with the "C", as the ones with a "K" just seem very 'franchise-y' to me. But for a quick fix, it did the job for me after not being in one in over a decade. First off, I want to address some recent reviews on how some are not pleased with the raising of prices. Jeez, what rock are these peeps living under?! It's 2023 and we have been steeped in a high rate of inflation for the past 3-4 years, and even before that, nothing was staying put, things climbed every year. And my 2 cents is that a hot dog here is still way under $10, so it is still a relatively cheap meal. Can't get too many things these days for under $10 bucks. And people are bitch'n from a $5 dog to a $7 dog. "Smell da the coffee!". This location does have a signature look that I don't remember from past locations near my town. This one the owner seems to display some trinkets and potted plants throughout, many being tiny succulents in pots. Kinda threw me off at first, as I wasn't sure what was going on, but it is definitely not offensive by any means. The outdoor walkway by the entrance even has a row of these potted succulents on the ground and at first glance got me to wonder, "who took the time to put these here?" But upon eating in one quiet afternoon, I gathered it was coming from someone here, probably the nice elderly lady solo working, possibly even an owner. Nachos ($6-$7ish/3*) These are basically your ballpark nachos, sturdy corn chips with that liquidy processed cheese flowing like lava. I'm not a huge fan of this type of nachos, but I don't mind it occasionally, like say a ballgame. I only got this cuz I wanted something extra to go with my hot dog, and I wasn't feeling just a bag of chips. Wasn't great but not to the fault of execution. For what it was, it was fine. Kraut Dog ($7-$8ish) Still same legit natural casing steamed hot dog. I'll take this over Dog Haus or over most modern takes on hot dogs. This is last century type of hot dogs, the types sold in wooden stands and/or carts long before food trucks and food delivery. The Bun didn't seem as warm as I remembered, but it is still quite soft. But my memory recalls a bun being pulled from the same steam holding area where the dogs were kept. That was special. The condiments were fine as I remembered. I should have held off the relish as I forgot that it is there on default. I just like kraut, mustard and onions. No big though. Now knowing this is here, I would easily come back for a hot dog fix. It is pretty much what I remembered and would love to support something that was a part of my childhood.
