Waited 23 minutes for a plain hot dog & nachos plain (chips & cheese). For me to get to my car and already be driving off and the nachos were stale as hell! The cheese was room temp/cold. The hot dog bun was hard! And the orange fizz didn't taste right!!! I'm highly upset! I'm only giving 2 stars because the lady was rushing because she realized i had been waiting a while because of the woman ahead of me ordering like 2 of everything on the menu! So 2 is for customer service. As for taste & quality of the food, yeah, no. I'll take my money else where.

The History of Kasper's Hot Dogs
    Nicolas A.

Kasper's with a "K"! Don't be fooled by Casper's with a "C" if you're looking for the original Chicago-style hot dog from the Armenian who started it all in Oakland, Kasper Koojoolian. These are the BEST hot dogs in the East Bay...bar none! These hot dogs are 100% beef, unlike the ones sold by Casper's. This is easily verified by looking at the ingredients of the Casper's hot dogs sold at Costco. Oakland, San Leandro, Castro Valley, Pleasanton, and Concord are the last Kasper's locations that are still running. I've seen the Fremont and Hayward locations close in recent years so I'm hoping the other five are here to stay! On a related note, I would love it if the "Original" location on 45th and Telegraph in Oakland would reopen. That place has been closed since 2003. Anyway, whenever I come to Kasper's, I always order the 1/4lb-er with cheese, tomatoes, and ketchup. YUM!...I'm hungry just thinking about it! If you like Chicago-style hot dogs, then Kasper's is the place to go!

Chicken tamale with everything on it

Call me weird but I come here for the tamales. Chicken or Beef and put everything on it! The tamales are steaming hot and you can add tamale sauce, onions, tomatoes, jalapeños, and shredded cheese. There's usually only one person working, so if there's a line, be prepared to wait. Also, always check your receipt. Once I paid $6 for 2 tamales and today I was charged $12 for the same thing?

Kasper's Hot Dog ($4.39 with tax): 8/10. My hot dogs didn't have much of a "snap" to them, but they were still pretty good.

Argh. I'm sorry, but a server/cashier who is ancient, hard of hearing, and incompetent shouldn't be working here. I was craving a Kasper's hot dog for a few weeks. I intended on buying 2, but left with none. I went here today after work (my wife picked me up at the Bay Fair BART station). I approached while the server/cashier was bringing in the plastic table from outside (I briefly wondered if this place was about to close). I felt for her because she looked to be in her 70's. She struggled with the table a little and was kind of hunched. I stood by the counter. I soon realized that I was in the way. The server/cashier jabbed me in the side for a few seconds before speaking up (she actually spoke so quietly that I could barely hear her). There was another path to the counter, but I understand why the server/cashier didn't try to go around me. My bad. Some prices: Kasper's Regular Dog: $4.39 with tax. 1/4 lb.: $5.16 with tax. The two prices above are ridiculous. (I loved the hot dogs that I had in the past, but no hot dogs here should be over $4.) What?!: I was quickly dismayed because I didn't have enough money on me (I stared at the menu, blinked a few times, and then shook my head). I thought that I had last been here in 2014, not 2012. Anyway, I was surprised to discover that the prices had gone up so dramatically (a Regular Dog is now $1 more than it was before). I've been stupid before (my wife is looking over my shoulder and nodding profusely), and so I decided to just buy a 1/4 lb. dog (my stomach shrugged in agreement). I began to order. I spoke loudly, but the woman still couldn't hear me at first. She lowered her head so much that she almost butted me in the chest. (Let's try this again.) I repeated my order. This time, the woman nodded like she understood. She then promptly screwed up. The hot dog looked red at one end, like it was overcooked or had forgotten to put on suntan lotion. It also didn't seem to be thick enough (in the woman's defense, I think I said "1/2 lb." instead of "1/4 lb."). The main thing, though, was that the woman was applying all this mustard and relish to the hot dog (I asked for mayo and ketchup only). A couple suddenly showed up as the woman was preparing my hot dog. They made me feel a little rushed, partly because they weren't really in line (they stood to the left of the counter when they actually should have stood behind me). I'm very good at sizing people up. I had no confidence in the server/cashier, and so I quickly walked out (I also did so because I was pressed for time). I didn't want to correct the old woman (my heart wasn't in it). I also didn't want to wait around and hope for the best. Had I stayed, I'm sure that I would have had to shout a lot. NO MUSTARD! NO RELISH! MAYO AND KETCHUP ONLY! (Maybe the woman would have felt insulted, but I told my wife later that I probably should have written my order down. My backpack was with me, but I didn't think about my little notebook at the time.) I live nearby. I'm positive that the server/cashier has worked here for a number of months. Still, I was surprised when I saw her. My quest for Kasper's hot dogs continues (the ones sold in grocery stores don't taste as good). I might return here in 2 weeks. If not, maybe in another 4 years again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrY9kja7YkA

Now, I read that this iconic Oakland Top Dog location is closing soon, due to a dispute with the new landlord. I figured I better get over her quick before it closes for good. https://www.sfgate.com/food/article/berkeley-top-dog-closing-oakland-location-21102867.php My Oakland guide, who grew up as a child in this Lakeshore Area, tells me of the old days here right at this location where the Top Dog is. It used to be a restaurant called Edy's and they had the best lime freezes. His mother used to take him here in the 1960's! I can't believe that was over 60 years ago! This Top Dog has been here for a long time, around 21 years. The little alley way that has an entrance to the Top Dog, now goes to Trader Joes, but he tells me that used to be a Lucky grocery store before. The parking structure wasn't there either. My guide is a long time Top Dog fan, from the original Berkeley locations. He even made friends with the girl cook at the north Berkeley location and ended up getting free hot dogs! He says the prices sure have gone up since the 70's ... a Kielbasa was just 70 cents! That's $4.50 now! This location runs like most locations, you just tell the cook what you want and the sausages are already cooked or cooking on the flat top grill. The buns get heated there too and then you have condiments to add. I've been a fan of Top Dog, more the Berkeley location, but it's sad to see this location close. Soon, it will just be the original Berkeley location open at the south campus.

I wasn't looking for a Coney dog when I decided to stop by at Kasper's with a 'K'. I'm surprised I had never been here because it's in Oakland's familiar Dimond district. Kasper's is housed in a cool, mid-century vintage standalone building and has a parking lot like most fast food eateries back sometime in the last century. There were two people behind the counter, both obvious veterans who split responsibilities between dressing the dogs and handling the register. The menu was pretty straightforward: nine different dogs and a chili bowl plus soft drinks and fizzes. I was hoping they might have a Chicago dog but no such luck. Instead I went for the $7.39 Quarter Pound Dog with Chili ($1.29), Cheese ($0.99), and Diced Onion (free). So kinda like a Coney but not quite. Still quite tasty and filling as it was an all-beef dog with a massive amount of chili (photo: https://yelp.to/nG4KKo0L6Y).
