4 nostalgic stars. I grew up with Kaspers with a "K" as I had 2 in my area growing up, that are long gone. I later discovered the one with a "C" in Hayward and have found they are more similar than different, product and menu wise. The only main difference are looks/interior of each place. I think there must have been some sort of split back in the day to form 2 different businesses that are so damn close in concept. But nowadays I think I'm more of a fan of the one with the "C", as the ones with a "K" just seem very 'franchise-y' to me. But for a quick fix, it did the job for me after not being in one in over a decade. First off, I want to address some recent reviews on how some are not pleased with the raising of prices. Jeez, what rock are these peeps living under?! It's 2023 and we have been steeped in a high rate of inflation for the past 3-4 years, and even before that, nothing was staying put, things climbed every year. And my 2 cents is that a hot dog here is still way under $10, so it is still a relatively cheap meal. Can't get too many things these days for under $10 bucks. And people are bitch'n from a $5 dog to a $7 dog. "Smell da the coffee!". This location does have a signature look that I don't remember from past locations near my town. This one the owner seems to display some trinkets and potted plants throughout, many being tiny succulents in pots. Kinda threw me off at first, as I wasn't sure what was going on, but it is definitely not offensive by any means. The outdoor walkway by the entrance even has a row of these potted succulents on the ground and at first glance got me to wonder, "who took the time to put these here?" But upon eating in one quiet afternoon, I gathered it was coming from someone here, probably the nice elderly lady solo working, possibly even an owner. Nachos ($6-$7ish/3*) These are basically your ballpark nachos, sturdy corn chips with that liquidy processed cheese flowing like lava. I'm not a huge fan of this type of nachos, but I don't mind it occasionally, like say a ballgame. I only got this cuz I wanted something extra to go with my hot dog, and I wasn't feeling just a bag of chips. Wasn't great but not to the fault of execution. For what it was, it was fine. Kraut Dog ($7-$8ish) Still same legit natural casing steamed hot dog. I'll take this over Dog Haus or over most modern takes on hot dogs. This is last century type of hot dogs, the types sold in wooden stands and/or carts long before food trucks and food delivery. The Bun didn't seem as warm as I remembered, but it is still quite soft. But my memory recalls a bun being pulled from the same steam holding area where the dogs were kept. That was special. The condiments were fine as I remembered. I should have held off the relish as I forgot that it is there on default. I just like kraut, mustard and onions. No big though. Now knowing this is here, I would easily come back for a hot dog fix. It is pretty much what I remembered and would love to support something that was a part of my childhood. read more

Been here several times over the years when I have a craving for a hot dog or two. I don't eat them much anymore. Not sure if I'll come here again and will state reason below. I've always had friendly and fast service. The hotdogs are okay, not a knock out. If you're looking for a great hotdog then this isn't the place. If you're looking for speedy and adequate then it works. I'm simple with my orders, just mustard and tomato. The tomatoes have always been in good shape. It'll be awhile before I give into having a hotdog again and I might not come here if I do. The reason is the price. Like anywhere else, they're going up and it's now about $5 per regular dog and goes up from there. The quality vs. price is no longer favorable IMO. read more

Waited 23 minutes for a plain hot dog & nachos plain (chips & cheese). For me to get to my car and already be driving off and the nachos were stale as hell! The cheese was room temp/cold. The hot dog bun was hard! And the orange fizz didn't taste right!!! I'm highly upset! I'm only giving 2 stars because the lady was rushing because she realized i had been waiting a while because of the woman ahead of me ordering like 2 of everything on the menu! Kasper's with a "K"! Don't be fooled by Casper's with a "C" if you're looking for the original Chicago-style hot dog from the Armenian who started it all in Oakland, Kasper Koojoolian. These are the BEST hot dogs in the East Bay...bar none! These hot dogs are 100% beef, unlike the ones sold by Casper's. This is easily verified by looking at the ingredients of the Casper's hot dogs sold at Costco. Oakland, San Leandro, Castro Valley, Pleasanton, and Concord are the last Kasper's locations that are still running. I've seen the Fremont and Hayward locations close in recent years so I'm hoping the other five are here to stay! On a related note, I would love it if the "Original" location on 45th and Telegraph in Oakland would reopen. That place has been closed since 2003. Anyway, whenever I come to Kasper's, I always order the 1/4lb-er with cheese, tomatoes, and ketchup. YUM!...I'm hungry just thinking about it! Call me weird but I come here for the tamales. Chicken or Beef and put everything on it! The tamales are steaming hot and you can add tamale sauce, onions, tomatoes, jalapeños, and shredded cheese. Argh. I'm sorry, but a server/cashier who is ancient, hard of hearing, and incompetent shouldn't be working here. I was craving a Kasper's hot dog for a few weeks. I intended on buying 2, but left with none. I went here today after work (my wife picked me up at the Bay Fair BART station). I approached while the server/cashier was bringing in the plastic table from outside (I briefly wondered if this place was about to close). I felt for her because she looked to be in her 70's. She struggled with the table a little and was kind of hunched. I stood by the counter. I soon realized that I was in the way. The server/cashier jabbed me in the side for a few seconds before speaking up (she actually spoke so quietly that I could barely hear her). There was another path to the counter, but I understand why the server/cashier didn't try to go around me. My bad. Some prices: Kasper's Regular Dog: $4.39 with tax. 1/4 lb.: $5.16 with tax. The two prices above are ridiculous. (I loved the hot dogs that I had in the past, but no hot dogs here should be over $4.) What?!: I was quickly dismayed because I didn't have enough money on me (I stared at the menu, blinked a few times, and then shook my head). I thought that I had last been here in 2014, not 2012. Anyway, I was surprised to discover that the prices had gone up so dramatically (a Regular Dog is now $1 more than it was before). I've been stupid before (my wife is looking over my shoulder and nodding profusely), and so I decided to just buy a 1/4 lb. dog (my stomach shrugged in agreement). I began to order. I spoke loudly, but the woman still couldn't hear me at first. She lowered her head so much that she almost butted me in the chest. (Let's try this again.) I repeated my order. This time, the woman nodded like she understood. She then promptly screwed up. The hot dog looked red at one end, like it was overcooked or had forgotten to put on suntan lotion. It also didn't seem to be thick enough (in the woman's defense, I think I said "1/2 lb." instead of "1/4 lb."). The main thing, though, was that the woman was applying all this mustard and relish to the hot dog (I asked for mayo and ketchup only). A couple suddenly showed up as the woman was preparing my hot dog. They made me feel a little rushed, partly because they weren't really in line (they stood to the left of the counter when they actually should have stood behind me). I'm very good at sizing people up. I had no confidence in the server/cashier, and so I quickly walked out (I also did so because I was pressed for time). I didn't want to correct the old woman (my heart wasn't in it). I also didn't want to wait around and hope for the best. Had I stayed, I'm sure that I would have had to shout a lot. NO MUSTARD! NO RELISH! MAYO AND KETCHUP ONLY! (Maybe the woman would have felt insulted, but I told my wife later that I probably should have written my order down. My backpack was with me, but I didn't think about my little notebook at the time.) I live nearby. I'm positive that the server/cashier has worked here for a number of months. I'm in San Leandro, hungry for some health food. Bayfair Center? Mall food, ugh. Thankfully, I know where Kasper's Hot Dogs is. Now, I admit, nothing can beat Pink's in Los Angeles. In the Bay Area, Top Dog is tops. But I had the Kasper's dog in that tiny triangle of a building on Telegraph Ave. in Oakland, remember that it was very good indeed, so I'll have a doggie in San Leandro. In this case, a Cajun Dog. Yaa-eee! This was spicy! Needs no Tabasco sauce. Tender skin that pops when you bite it, flavorful weiner with a hotness that does not smother the taste. I'm glad I requested no mustard, I didn't want the mustard to smother the taste either. Chili dogs and plain hot dogs also available. Few other options, so don't come here if you don't like hot dogs. Sounds like a four-star review to me. I took it down by one star very deliberately. I think there's a law, maybe at the state level, that people working with food must wear plastic gloves, and the cashier put the dog together using his bare hands. I wasn't worried for me - I'm the bad parent who let his daughter eat dirt to strengthen her immune system - but this is an opening for food poisoning. The older lady, who was probably the manager, also had bare hands, so this is a problem. So if you want a fantastic weiner and you're nowhere near Berzerkeley, Kasper's does the trick. I haven't had Kaspers for years. My mom grabbed my dad and me some cheese hot dogs and nachos. They live about 5 minutes from there in the Manor. By the time she got home, the hot dogs were room temp with barely any cheese under the dog, the buns were hard, the nachos were stale and barely had any cheese which was cold. There is nothing worse than cold soggy stale nachos. I couldn't believe it because I had such great memories of their food. We were all so dissapointed. This Kaper's is probably one of the newest locations and was opened due to the increased lease rates at Bayfair Mall, where the last one was. It is a decent location and makes everything suite well. Better than the Greenhouse location and not quite as nice as great as the Hayward location. It has it's own lot, which is cool and it's a really convenient and easy to find spot. There is one thing they do here that is a little differently than other Kaspers in the area. The Nacho platter! One of my biggest food weaknesses in life with it's oh so cheesy goodness... I love them! They make it way bigger and put it in a pie tin like container that makes this treat about 30% bigger than others of it's kind. Don't get me wrong, the one's in Hayward are still 5 times better, but just for sheer size these things rock! Stop by Kasper's sometime so you get the jist of what I'm saying. CHAD read more

They are an East Bay institution; the Hesperian branch in SL is part of a long-time tradition. True, some odd folks come through(which is why I keep my little one at my side at all times.) The ladies at the counter may not always wear gloves or wash their hands to your germaphobe liking. Kasper's (all of them, dammit!) are the absolute best hot dogs in the world. Seriously. I can't express this enough. There just aren't enough words. I mean, I enjoy a good hot dog, but I don't generally go out of my way to eat them. While I enjoy a good penis joke and other phallus-related things like everyone else, hot dogs are not really something that strike my fancy. But I just can't help myself when I drive by Kasper's. I'll have just eaten and literally stop in to grab one "for later." They're a Bay Area institution and I'm glad to see some of them still around.
