Now don't get me in the middle of the East Bay hot dog rivalry between Casper's and Kasper's. I'm not that much of a frankfurter connoisseur, even though I have compared Coney dogs in Detroit between two classic purveyors, Lafayette Coney Island and American Coney Island. I wasn't looking for a Coney dog when I decided to stop by at Kasper's with a 'K'. I'm surprised I had never been here because it's in Oakland's familiar Dimond district. Kasper's is housed in a cool, mid-century vintage standalone building and has a parking lot like most fast food eateries back sometime in the last century. There were two people behind the counter, both obvious veterans who split responsibilities between dressing the dogs and handling the register. The menu was pretty straightforward: nine different dogs and a chili bowl plus soft drinks and fizzes. I was hoping they might have a Chicago dog but no such luck. Instead I went for the $7.39 Quarter Pound Dog with Chili ($1.29), Cheese ($0.99), and Diced Onion (free). So kinda like a Coney but not quite. I dared to get a $1.69 bag of chips and a $3.05 Diet Coke, but in hindsight, I should've gone for an Orange Fizz to evoke my Orange Julius-filled childhood. I used to love those. The history, the story, the food. What's not to appreciate about Kasper's?! Serving Hot Dogs for 95 years, this was actually my first time here. I enjoyed it very much. Joann, the manager has been working for 56 years here. She's an awesome person and she makes the food that much more special. I ordered a chili cheese dog. It was a real satisfying meal. As a kid I used to passed this on my way to school and I think tried it once as a young adult. Now 30 years later it one of the few locations still open. Did you know its founder was Armenian? When I was a kid I didn't know what Armenian was, but with time and travel I end up working in one the 2 largest Armenian communities outside of Armenia, but I digress. Have moved back I'm trying my old haunts (that are still around and haven't succumbed to gentrification. Kaspers is one of them. The decor certainly hasn't gentrified from the late 60s or 70s and the orange strips are calling Austin Powers for reboot. Menu is simple and service is simple. Hotdogs, chips, and fountain drinks. Step up, tell the nice lady what Hot dog you want, what if any topping you want and for there or to go. Toppins like onions, tomatoes are fresh cut. The ladies know their regulars. I ordered the cajun dog, with onions and tomatoes and mustard, bbq chips, and an orange fizz. Kasper's with a "K"! Don't be fooled by Casper's with a "C" if you're looking for the original Chicago-style hot dog from the Armenian who started it all in Oakland, Kasper Koojoolian. These are the BEST hot dogs in the East Bay...bar none! These hot dogs are 100% beef, unlike the ones sold by Casper's. This is easily verified by looking at the ingredients of the Casper's hot dogs sold at Costco. Oakland, San Leandro, Castro Valley, Pleasanton, and Concord are the last Kasper's locations that are still running. I've seen the Fremont and Hayward locations close in recent years so I'm hoping the other five are here to stay! On a related note, I would love it if the "Original" location on 45th and Telegraph in Oakland would reopen. That place has been closed since 2003. They're sweet in a not going to take crap from anyone kind of way and they make a mean, classic hot dog. Yummy! I've been walking by Kasper's for the past two years. Each time I think, I should stop here sometime. The decor alone has me curious. But today, as I was about to walk across the street (corner of Kasper's) two men came swooping around the corner in their car. I had to pause to make sure they saw me. Been coming here for a very long time. Kasper's has a very interesting and long history in the Bay. All types come here to get a dog or two, tamale, chili or a combo. The dogs are made to order and are 100% beef - not to be confused with their kinfolk who own Casper's on Telegraph Avenue on the Northside. So...I ate 3 hotdogs. If you personally know me, you know that is quite a feat! What drove me to glutinous, reckless abandon? The steamed buns and dogs themselves. The hot dog snaps when you bite into it and there isn't a gush of gross fat sludge after the snap. Also, the hot dog wasn't super salty like say, a Hebrew National hot dog. Wow, can't believe Kaspers resurrected here. While in highschool I worked at the McDonald's on Foothill Blvd right down from Eastmont Mall. On my weekend day shifts I would stop off and get the best Hot Dogs in Oakland, better than Doggie Diner. I lived near Oakland High so my travel took me right by the Kaspers. One night after closing McDonald's I drove home and noticed something different about the area but couldn't figure what it was. The next day on my way to work I stopped by to get my dog and what I found was a cement floor, no walls and a few cast iron pipes sticking out of the ground. Kasper's Hot Dogs is good, but doesn't come even close to the original Kasper's that closed few years ago. Buns tend to be a bit mushy for my taste. Dogs are more beefy tasting than the Caspers, I think. This location has a real retro interior -- 1960's?
