Come here for the drinks or for their attempt at Latin / Mexican bar food and bring some good company to boot. This is one of those places where a good time depends on who's drinking and who's not. The place has plenty of seating on the inside and quite a section for outdoor action. Folks can smoke and drink as they please outside with no problems. On the inside they have TVs galore, usually broadcasting Mexican soccer / futbol games. The staff is not pretentious and they have provided good service each time I'm here. Don't be nervous about trying to say the words on the menu, chances are the nearly app Nepalese staff might have trouble saying it too. Let's one thing straight: the "Mexican" food here is close to an abomination. Anyone coming here to get their fix of sopa tortilla or the next great mole poblano will be sorry they did. The bar is stacked with versions of bar friendly Mex, which includes nachos, quesadillas, and tacos. Most of the aforementioned is incredibly mediocre, but being that HK is not blessed with quality Mexican fare, the food at Tequila Jack's is hardly a surprise. Do however, indulge on their themed nights. On Saturday nights for example, is steak night for $108 each. It is a 10oz steak with some fixins like fries, veggies, and corn on the cob. I'm usually not terribly crazy about cheap steak but theirs is a slight exception. My steak has been cooked perfectly each time and the marbling / fat actually melts in your mouth. I have been here since the prices were $90 and the steak has been one of the only highlights food wise. On the drink front, they have a legit array of Mexican beers along with a stellar selection of tequila. It's probably the most abundant collection of tequila I've seen in the hood. The prices per shot aren't cheap ($140?) but if money doesn't matter as much the drunks are in their own league at TJ's. Lastly, if you're sitting outside at night: Watch out for our furry friends running around. They have caused quite a stir in the past. And *do not* feed them.

I was excited that they offer a tour on Fridays from 6-9pm, so I called to book, as requested by the website. Now, to help out all future visitors... this place can be a challenge to find. Presuming your GPS/map takes you to the correct building (which is just a couple of streets off the MTR station), don't circle around looking for a lobby or entrance. Just walk into the loading dock area, where you will see some industrial elevators. They are garage sized, and the doors open up and down instead of sideway. You step inside the monster, trusting that its teeth won't chomp on you midway... Once you get to the 5th floor, you can see the door gods on the doors and you know you have arrived. Moonzen's Chinese name means door gods. It goes without saying that I had a hard time finding the place and arrived late. No worries, the guy collecting my $250 said, the tour starts at 8, now you can just hang around and enjoy our beer. Well, it would be nice if they told me when I called. I could have enjoyed a proper dinner first. Not in the mood to get take outs, I decided to just sit and enjoy some beer. Basically, you pay $250 for all you can drink beer. They have 6 on taps, from lager to porter. I was disappointed that they do not have the same beer as posted on their website, as there was one special release I'd love to try, but turned out their "now on tap" list hasn't been updated for months. I was lucky enough to join an American couple chatting with the master brewer, who moved to HK 5 years ago from New Jersey. It was fun to exchange notes, an American living in HK and a HKer living in America, and hear him talk about missing American Chinese food in a city with 7 million Chinese, spending US$30 to make an American sandwich, or trying in vain to cook a Thanksgiving dinner. The tour was very basic, and I was surprised that less than 10% of the people in the taproom actually participated in the tour. The brewer told us that as there's hardly any bars in the neighborhood, restaurants won't let people stay long on a Friday night, and most houses are too small to entertain guests, many locals enjoy coming to the taproom with some take outs and stay the evening with friends.

To be quite honest, if you've already done a brewery tour then the educational bit where they tell you about the brewing is mostly all the same. The fun part of the brewery tour is tasting all of their different beers! For $200, it is unlimited pours of all of their 8 beers on top for 4 hours! What a deal. 3 of the 8 flavors were seasonal beers, which included a chestnut winter ale, chocolate stout, and the Jade Rabbit rocket IPA. There is a big open area with different tables where you can hang out while sipping away at the beers. You are also encouraged to bring your own food. I think this would be an awesome and affordable way to host a birthday party. The owners are a husband and wife, and they are both super nice. I've always loved Moonzen because of the way they name their beers and the story behind all of them. Their labels are also super pretty. The tours happen every Friday evening and you can RSVP through their website or Facebook. If you're looking for a fun way to spend a Friday night with the crew, I suggest checking out Moonzen.

It comes with fries too so it is very filling. Risotto- exceptional! The semi-raw egg just add an extra creaminess to it. Personally, I feel like the food is not bad. I first came a number of years ago, and thought at the time that the food was pretty good. Having come back again in the past couple months as well, I found myself still basically feeling that way. However, I feel like this place is pretty bad value overall. It's very expensive, which is, I feel, mainly due to the high overhead costs. Having a restaurant in this one little area is very expensive, considering this is prime office real estate. The problem is made worse by the fact that they just have such a large space here. The amount of food you get is not really in line with the price you pay; it would be one thing if it were expensive and you got enough food with your dollar, but that's just not the case, even if the food is good. The problem isn't just M&M fox however, Quarry Bay in general is in general just a wasteland when it comes to fine dining that is actually good value. I think if you're really determined to have western food that is like... better than mcdonalds, you should either go to frites (less than five minutes away), or just not dine in this neighborhood in general.

"Yes, but with this specific brand of Gin called Hendrick's." "Let me check if we have it..." "But it's on the menu?" I pointed at the menu, where clearly showing they did serve Hendrick's. "Oh right, surely." My friend now wondered if she really got a Hendrick's Ginger Ale. Oh yeah, you know that answer already when you are reading this, but we had to wait until the bill came to confirm. I'd have given them a 2-star if it's not a newly opened bar. With the advent of Beef & Liberty and Butchers Club Burger, it seems that the humble burger is making some waves in the culinary scene in HK. Well, Big Bite has been a little known stalwart in the burger kingdom for sometime now, and for good reason. They serve a simple menu of burgers and dogs, with various fries and drinks. I say simple, because by concept it is. However, the menu may betray otherwise, as it is a bit of a head bender trying to workout what is and is not in the meal deal etc. So remember to pull out your PHD in statistical analysis before embarking into the menu. Alternatively, just point and grunt. The burgers are brilliant. 100% ground US beef, they are cooked really nicely, so they retain that lovely crumbly dry texture, without being just mince in a bun. The bun is a lovely soft and light wisp of a thing, perfectly framing the pattie and whatever else you can cram in. Unfortunately, I do have a grumble though, the burger was a bit luke warm, and I put this down to the service. I don't know what is going on with the service, but it sucks. It's not even a proper restaurant, in that you order and pay at the counter before taking a table, but even with only one part of the waiting service to do (i.e. bringing me my burger), they take an absolute ice age, bring everything at differing times, and forget stuff. The total result is a cold burger, followed 10 mins (and three requests) later with poutine that is hotter than the sun. Unfortunately, this sucky service puts a big black mark across the food. I doubt that the chef likes his burgers to be cold at the table, unless that is the Canadian style of serving them? Definitely give it a go, as you can get a really good burger for much less than the fancy boys. Just keep on top of the wait staff and get your food out at the same time - hot. Maybe sit up by the pass at the high tables, so you can be all over them. One last brownie point; they have an excellent selection of beers, and on Tuesdays, you can add HKD3 with any beer purchase for buffalo wings - get out the blue cheese!
