For an appetizer, I ordered the satay chicken skewers. The chicken was very sour and adding the peanut sauce on top of it didn't make it better. It was a disappointment. For an entree, I ordered the spaghetti carbonara. The pasta was not creamy at all and the sauce was very watery. Another disappointment. What really ticked me off was that I didn't even get my entree yet and the waiter handed me the bill. I'm like, are you serious? I'm definitely not coming back here again.

Food: 4 stars Environment/service: 4 stars Value: 3 stars Recommendations: organic vegetables, white clam linguini The pasta here is what to get and in my opinion is better than the pizza. The pizza is cooked in a cast iron pan, which gives you a nice crispy crust. I prefer the wood fire oven cooling style and a more chewy crust. The pricing is on the high side but is in line with Hong Kong. I would expect to pay between 200-250 hkd per person. If ordering the more high end proteins then it will be more.

Sadly, the number of dai pai dong has declined over the years as licenses for them are no longer issued, but Sing Heung Yuen is one of the few remaining ones. I came to Sing Heung Yuen for lunch with my friend. There was a line, but it moved relatively quickly. I ordered a Hong Kong-style milk tea and a tomato noodle soup with sausage, luncheon meat, and egg. I was told by a few people that the soup is best with macaroni noodle, but I prefer instant noodle, so I got that instead. The food hit the spot. It was simple, delicious, and super filling. I was told by some local ladies that the toast is a must-try, but I was way too full, so I skipped it. Aside from being a unique experience, Sing Heung Yuen offers a quick and affordable meal to tourists and locals. Avoid though if you are not a fan of tomato soup or toast since the menu is as limited as the space.

They are known for their tomato soup base and you can choose the type of noodles and there's various toppings to choose from. I ordered their tomato macaroni soup with beef and spam. The soup is on the sour side and I would have liked it to be a little more savory and hearty. The macaroni was a little overcooked but that's basically Hong Kong cafe style. It came with 2 half pieces of spam, one of it was overcooked and dry, the other one seemed undercooked. The beef was decent texture wise but it didn't have much flavor. We also ordered their toast with condensed milk and the toast was over toasted and too crunchy to my liking. Overall, it's an unique experience but don't be expect the food to be superb. You also won't get over the top service but everyone was very courteous and friendly.

(#1) The Moyo brand has since grown into a number of other projects that have spanned across the city but it all started right here in Central. Like any of restaurant in the neighborhood, seating is tight. The government restrictions over the last couple of years have made it even tighter, resulting in discounted delivery through various local platforms. Indoor dining is back again, but one never truly knows when a future shutdown is happening. The food has remained high end, seasonal, and completely different from the usual dining options in HK. Whether it's been seasonal truffle tofu-toasts, carbonara infused tteokboki, or their winter friendly Korean style sashimi (bang-eo hwae), it's all very good. A personal favorite is their uni rice, which is quite modest in portion size (#2) but straight bangin' in flavor and texture. And unlike many other Korean restaurants, they have a nice Italian selection of wine that pairs quite well with the dishes. While it's been marketed as a fusion establishment, they also do a very good job in representing traditional options as well. Their bossam ssam plate with samgyupsal (pork belly) is tasty and while not always available, jajangmyun is a nice comfort food option. While I no longer live in Hong Kong to enjoy them, I still applaud their efforts from afar. While the food landscape / foreign community is rapidly changing as we speak, I hope they can continue to remain relevant during uncertain times. ______________ (#1) Italian, Korean. Moyo is right across the street from PMQ so if you see PMQ and see a tiny restaurant across the street that is Moyo. We ordered: Marinated Tofu Salad (Lotus root, purple sweet potato, apple): Lotus root was deep fried which provided a crispy contrast in texture to the soft tofu, apple and purple sweet potato gave it a hint of sweetness Drunken Clams (Rice wine Makgeolli, garlic, lemon zest, chili): Clams were cooked perfectly and we were so happy we got this. Kimchi pork pancake (minus the pork): I'm ALWAYS a fan of kimchi pancake. Even though the pancake could stand to be a teeny bit more crispy at the ends, I loved the kimchi flavor. Brussels Sprouts (Korean dwaenjang paste, almonds, peanut butter): This was stir fried and not roasted as I originally thought it would be. I'm not really a fan of stir fried brussels sprouts but it was interesting with the peanut butter taste which I could barely detect because the dwaenjang paste was stronger. The dishes here were more tapas size and I'm glad we ordered that many dishes. Service was on point and friendly. Moyo is a small and cozy restaurant (you're almost elbow to elbow) with a typical tiny bathroom. A definite place I'll need to try again for the kimchi disco fries and Korean Fried Chicken (sorry Alex, I'll not bring you next time, maybe someone else who is a carnivore).

Okay, so it ain't exactly fancy here but you're not expecting a Michelin starred experience, right?…read more Cafe de Coral is a good fast food spot that does HK-style cafe food decently and cheaply. The restaurants here are clean and that means a lot to me. You don't feel like eating at some drab fast food spot like McDonalds around here. I went for their mid-afternoon special and got roast duck vermicelli in broth with a red bean "catty" drink (which pretty much was red bean ice - cubed ice, not shaved). The vermicelli was okay with the broth being clear but without much personality. However, the duck was pretty decent and reasonably portioned. The red bean drink was refreshing and not too sweet or too creamy - fine balance. All of this amounted to around $4.00, which is what a drink would cost alone around here. Ordering and getting food is efficient and pretty orderly. Yeah, it feels a little cafeteria-ish, but I'm not complaining.
