I woke up with a crick in my neck that plagued me through the morning and wanted to quickly book an online appointment. Fortunately, Spa on the Hill had availability for a Sunday evening. The business itself is located on the lower level of a rowhouse that's easy to miss from the street. But once you step inside, the area is pretty peaceful. There is a simple check-in area with a water dispenser--it's not fancy but it also comfortable and not clinical. I arrived early to fill out the relatively short intake form for new customers. Before long, I was greeted by Michelle, who was very friendly. She confirmed the areas that I wanted to work on and used just the right amount of pressure (she also asked to check that the pressure was appropriate). There were also hot towels and stones applied during the massage, which was a bonus for me! I'll add that the massage table was heated, which was awesome, and the face padding was ample. That's super important to me because I've spent an hour on massage tables with little to no face padding and walked away with a line on my face from a metal bar! None of that here. The shop also sells some lotions, essential oils, and other things. Prices are competitive for the area as well. I think I'll be back! read more

I love Spa On The Hill! It is a female-owned business in a cute little rowhome located just up the street from my home. I've had two amazing facials from Arnetta, the owner, which I highly recommend, and amazing massages from Sharla, Sylvia, and Michelle. I've never had a bad experience here, and I would recommend anyone on the team. Sharla's massage work is magic! The ambiance in the room is perfect with candles lit, ice cold water if I'm thirsty, wet wash rags to use on my face before or after, and relaxing music. She soaks my hands and feet in hot wax, and uses hot stones and hot towels in different areas after massaging. She also specializes in a deep heat massage if you are brave enough. It is definitely nice during winter months. Recently, I came to her with pain from carpal tunnel and she used hot stones on my tight muscles that really loosened up the pressure and the pain. From head to toe I feel like I'm melting in the chair every time. I'm here at least once a month and sometimes twice, and my husband comes to see Sharla as well. I work out a lot and feel these massages are a really nice complement to my training. Highly recommend Sharla for full body relaxation! read more

Woooooo chile! This cute little house in Capitol Hill is home to a great massage experience. I came here because the fall is especially stressful for me at work. I had a lot of tension in my shoulders and I needed it to get worked out. MAN!!! did she work it out. The service was wuick, i didnt have to wait long. The area is cozy but enough room to feel comfortable. The temperatures were perfect. My masseuse was very attentive. She's strong as heck! She worked the heck out of back knots. I thought I was going to YELP! She was very accommodating when I told her it was a bit too much pressure. Honestly, I needed a deep tissue but I wasn't emotionally ready for one. An hour later, I felt sooooo much relief! I chugged water all night to flush the toxins. It's was a productive experience and I am excited to go back next month. read more

I tired Spa on the Hill for a massage today and while the massage itself was fine, the environment and admin process were not relaxing, transparent, or supportive. I booked a 60 minute massage online, the price listed was 165. When I checked in online the instructions indicated that a receptionist would let me in 5 minutes before the appointment start time. When I arrived at the door there was no receptionist on site so I sat on the steps outside and waited until after my appointment time began to be let in. The practitioner was trying to be polite but clearly had booked sessions back-to-back with no time buffer in between for checking in or out with clients, turning over the room, washing hands, or discussing clients' needs. This made the appointment stressful because although they were running late, I couldn't stay longer than 70 minutes, and I was upfront about that. I didn't demand a lower price for less time, but calmly let them know I needed to be on my way and that I'd like them to adjust the session accordingly. My actual massage time after getting settled and the practitioner checking out another client was probably 45 minutes. They ran late and had me out about 10 minutes after I'd indicated that I needed to leave. Because the session ran overtime, I didn't realize until after I had swiped my card that I was charged 170 instead of 165. The most off-putting issue was that the practitioner had already entered in a tip for themselves. At that point I was too late to deal with negotiating and said goodbye. If you decide to go to Spa on the Hill, block off a lot of time, expect to wait around, and double check on what price and service you're getting before payment. Know that what's said by the staff answering the business phone and the form you fill out before service might not have any impact on your session. Lastly, the website has a lot to say about masking and Covid precautions, so I wore a mask but neither the practitioner nor the other client in the room during my appointment were masked. read more

This pregnancy has treated me like crap I've worked myself completely out but when I say from the moment I walked in I was greeted and pampered and treated like a queen. My first appointment here was on Saturday 8/25 for a 60-min Neuromuscular Massage. The description from their site is as follows "Sports Massage is massage that incorporates more stretching and / or deeper work for athletes or people who are physically active. Heat and Ice therapies will be incorporated to reduce inflammation and decrease healing time of overuse or injury. Focused stretches will improve flexibility and prevent injury. Your therapist will give you specific take-home stretches to address your individual needs." First, I was assigned the wrong therapist and 5 minutes into the massage, there's a knock on the door. I waited 5-10 minutes for the staff to figure out what was happening so it was time lost on my massage. In addition, there was no stretching, ice therapy, or take-home stretches. This was just a standard massage which on their website should've cost $100, but I paid the $120 for the Neuromuscular massage I did not receive. I also left a tip. My second appointment was today, Saturday, 9/1, for a signature facial. The website description is as follows: "For those that need the ultimate relaxation and attention given to skin, this customized facial made just for you is a great option. After a one-on-one consultation and detailed skin analysis, our esthetician will design a facial with products to address your individual needs, that will re-energize your skin cells, increase hydration, smooth wrinkles and firm and lift the skin. Relaxing treatment includes double cleansing, exfoliation to include diamond dermabrasion (as needed), extractions, face massage, mask and moisturizer with an extended massage. This treatment is made complete with soothing hand, foot and scalp massages." I did not receive microdermabrasion (not was it ever addressed that I didn't need it) or a scalp massage. I paid the overpriced $175. The hand towels in the bathroom and body towel/wrap used during the facial had a mildewy smell. The actual services received were fine, but I feel like I didn't receive the actual services I registered or paid for. read more

It's like magic... Hidden among a strip of row houses, this little gem is filled with professional masseuse who know how to manipulate the body into releasing pressure and relaxing at maximum capacity. I've made several appointments. The staff here has always been professional and accommodating. While the spa may be small, the rooms are intimate with adequate office/waiting space in the center of the building. They offer water and candy complimentary. Onto the massage... So, I have chronic lower back pain, which has recently extended into leg pain (sigh). Before a session, I consult with the masseuse (I choose no one in particular, everyone I've encountered has been ridiculously amazing), shortly after is when the magic happens. The way my body is massaged and flexed, moved to release stress...the last time I came in, the masseuse intertwined our limbs to stretch out my hips. Hands felt like continuous ribbons gliding across my back and shoulders. Mmmmmmm. I don't usually go to sleep during massages, but I found myself snoring a tad bit. My goodness! The fact that I don't have a chosen masseuse speaks to the quality of the team. Besides, I never like relying on one particular person for a service. What if they get sick? Or go on vacation? Ijs. I've spent the past two days calling to inquire about getting a gift card/certificate and setting up a spa appointment for my significant other on their birthday. Then I figured I would visit them in person on the way home since their posted hours say they close at 9 PM. At 6:30 PM when I arrive, no one answers the door when I ring the door bell or after knocking. I wait about 10 minutes, call and try ringing again. Weirdest facial of my life; painful in all the wrong ways. I signed up for the Wellness Organic Facial (the coupon available on Yelp) and my face was treated to an onslaught of chemical products. Things were flying into my eyes and mouth all throughout the treatment. The esthetician's hands were unnecessarily sudden and rough for all applications and especially the exfoliation, which felt like straight up bath salts being thrown on my skin, crap was in my ears and hair, so there was hardly a chance to relax. Her application was rough, but I thought oh goody at least her extractions will probably be painful but amazing -- this was the one time she was doing nothing significant to my face. She briefly pinched large areas like chin, forehead, nose (literally three pinches) and then was done, even though I had specified I had two huge zits that needed treatment. One, she did not touch, the other, I felt great pain and sting about during the facial (because she was endlessly globbing stuff all over it) but looked afterwards and saw no change. There was also no communication going on throughout the facial about what she was putting on me, tips or pointing out problem areas, and sometimes I would realize I had been laying there for 10 minutes without her doing anything and wondering (nervously) what was next and when she would attack again. What made matters worse was I has explained extensively how my skin was sensitive to products and heat -- both of which she heaped on with abandon. During a beauty treatment, I've never felt less relaxed and so not taken care of in my life. You have been warned. read more

It was moving week for me, but I scheduled a 90 minute massage (a nice treat) and some lady-scaping (necessary maintenance, ya know?) because I had to use my gift certificate. As I was walking out my front door (5 minute walk from the spa) I get a call saying that they need to cancel because the masseuse is "sick". (I'm quoting this because it was during the week of beautiful 70 degree sunshine in March...hmmm...) Was pretty disappointed by the timing and they had no other availability for the rest of the week. They did refund the price of my gift certificate which warrants the two stars, but I was pretty unimpressed by their inability to work me in later in the week and the lack of advanced notice on the cancellation. read more

I had Lauren for a full body massage yesterday. I informed her of the areas that needed the most work and she did an AMAZING job. She found knots and funky points I didn't know I had. I wish I could go back again today. At one point it felt so healing that I almost said, "Ok, just stay there for the remaining 45 minutes." I would give the overall experience 4 stars, but for a very superficial reason. After the treatment you get to stay in the room and are given a snack. Lovely idea. I thought they could have offered a better quality snack. Am I awful? I might prefer no snack to warm cheese and packaged cookies. The strawberries were delish. Maybe just stick with that concept and add a little, cute, bag of raw nuts we could leave with.... Hands down the best massage I've ever had (and I get massages pretty often). My masseuse today was Janelle. She asked about my problem areas and boy did she hit them ALL! She focused on those areas for the majority of the session which I was surprised about. It was perfect. All the soreness and tightness I had before the massage are GONE! She had the right balance of medium to firm pressure! I love that it wasn't your typical Swedish massage. I had the 90 minute therapeutic massage and it was unlike any massage I've had anywhere. I liked that unlike a Swedish massage you couldn't guess what area she'd be going to next...yet the massage still had a rhythm to it. The entire experience was great! I am pretty sure I was drooling (as well as snoring) during the session (I wish I was kidding). Lastly I love that this place is in a row house hidden in SE DC. I'm glad I finally found a place not far from home that I can go that'll provide me with the Kevel of service I want. Oh my bliss. My poor little third trimester preggo body has never been so happy. I think I didn't realize how much pain I was in until I wasn't in ANY pain at all anymore. I saw Janelle today for a prenatal massage and she was absolutely brilliant. The spa is located in a cute little row house, very cozy, peaceful, and serene inside. The woman at the front desk (who's name I cannot remember...blasted preggo brain!) was just as sweet and welcoming as they come. She made me feel instantly comfortable and at home. Janelle asked a ton of questions before the massage started - wonderful, because I wouldn't have thought to mention some of the things she prompted me to point out. The table was already set up with cushions and supports to allow me lay face-down, even with my nearly-34-weeks-large tummy. I was so well supported that even just laying down on something that comfortable and pressure-point relieving was wonderful. Janelle gave a massage that was just the right combination of strong pressure to move out knots and swelling mixed with gentle, soothing rubbing. I practically danced off the table at the end of my hour - rejuvenated and relaxed. It was such a good experience that I booked a massage a week for the six weeks remaining in my pregnancy! (Aside: This is (a) one of the few places I've found that will do massages all the way to 40 weeks...and beyond; (b) one of the few places that offers induction massage at or after 40 weeks. I went to SOTH the other night for a facial. I have to admit it was my first facial ever, but man it felt good. Arnetta did an amazing job cleaning my face and the massage she gave me was awesome as well. She also took the time to clean my pretty oily skin and black heads. It was a very relaxing hour that went by way to fast. I walked out of there super happy and relaxed (where can I hire someone to wash my face for me at night??) and my skin never looked for felt so good and healthy before. First off let me say that this was my first professional massage experience and oh my GAWD did it exceed every expectation that I had! Ok, on to the nitty gritty. What made this even more special was that I was able to have a prenatal massage. At first I was a bit apprehensive because as a FTM I wasn't sure if the masseuse would hit certain pressure points and send me into premature labor (dramatic, right?). That was very far from the case. I didn't wait for long in the waiting area before Sylvia called me back. She began to ask questions about any aches or pains and noticed (by observation alone) that I was very tense in my neck and shoulders. She was very gentle yet firm and made me feel very comfortable. But let me tell you...she also worked it out. I mean everything. Being that this was a gift (from the best man EVER!) I had no clue what to expect or even how long it was supposed to last. So the hour passed but felt like two. The entire experience was simply amazing and one that I'd be willing to go back and pay for myself, no questions asked. read more

Cancelled appointment After booking over the phone for an appointment, I got the earliest appointment a week later. The day before my appointment they called to say I needed a credit card on file or my appointment would be cancelled. when I spoke to the receptionist she said their scheduling system requires a credit card on file because of cancellations and the fees they have to charge in the event of a cancellation. I asked about the security of their system and that I wasn't please about leaving my card on file, because I have been hacked in the past. She said OK then we will go ahead and cancel. Done and Done! I had been there before and no request such as this was made. I understand small business and the need for revenue but they have lost a customer. read more

This review is for the massage services. I decided to treat myself for my birthday. So, I booked myself a 60 minute signature treatment with Sandy and she worked wonders on my tense muscles and tight spots! You definitely get what you pay for and it was top-notch service! Sandy was fantastic. She doesn't talk too much (which I always appreciate) and works with you in assessing which areas you'd like work on. She spent quality time focusing on my problem areas, and I never realized how certain muscles work together. She gave me some at-home tips and remedies for continuing to work on my lower back since that's where I feel the most soreness. Overall, I felt she did a thorough job and I enjoyed every minute of the experience! The spa gives you a 15-minute period post-massage when you can take use the shower in the bathroom connected to the massage room, as well as refresh yourself with cold water, cheese, crackers, strawberries and cookies. The facilities are clean and pleasant. Although you are in DC, you feel like you've escaped to a much more serene atmosphere. Definitely one of my more enjoyable and positive experiences with massage treatments. I expect to be back! read more
