I have used Spa on the Avenue for my services for nearly 20 years. And I've seen staff come and go and for the most part I've been very impressed by the caliber of technicians and staff that this location employs. I stopped using Spa services after Covid and have just now returned to regular spa services. And I honestly have to say the current staff make up has got to be the best that I've witnessed over the last 20 years. Everyone has been so helpful and top-notch and made my experiences there a true delight. Julie V in the hair department has been my go to for years and she does amazing work. I've had massages by three of the therapists there and each offered me a unique experience targeting the problem areas. Jerrika, Kim and Cori are highly skilled and the services I received by them I consider part of my health.routine. Kiersten and Brienne in the skincare department, not only provide excellent services, but during my appointments have provided me education on overall health and wellness to which I am completely grateful for. And Marni (spelling?) in the management department has wrapped my experiences all up in a wonderful, beautiful bow by being very personable and Customer Service oriented. She has suggested products for me. She has addressed issues that I might have had over the years and is just a delight to deal with. If I had to come up with a complaint, or a negative point about my recent experiences at Spa on the Avenue, I would have to say that it feels less like a luxury spa and like there have been shortcuts in the decor and products provided. Now I'm not sure if this is part of a post Covid new normal or if this is a symptom of the recent renovations. As a larger woman, I find that the new chairs in the hair department are so uncomfortable and so tight that they caused me physical pain. My last appointment there Julie was very accommodating and worked something out for me so I could sit in comfort while she colored and cut my hair. Back in the day I remembered the spa section feeling warm and cozy and inviting and now it kind of looks surgical and cold. This might just be a taste thing as I've gotten older and maybe I'm not up on the decor and fashion for spas. I also remember the good old days where products to sample would be offered in the restrooms there and now it's just a standard Commercial soap dispenser, and it doesn't feel like a wellness retreat like it used to. Even with the negatives that I just pointed out I have to say I will still continue to use Spa on the Avenue as my soul and single location for Spa services and would highly recommend them to friends and family. read more

She allows you to simply lay back and relax while she works in exquisite treatments into your skin with the perfect amount of pressure and luxurious technique. The facial included a wonderful face mask, deep hydration, eye treatment, including the décolletage, and a hand, arm and shoulder massage. The way it should it be done. The last time I came in for service, I booked a one hour massage. I was 13 minutes late, which is on me, so I fully expected a 45 minute massage. To my surprise, my massage was only 30 minutes. When I got to the front, I let them know that I would be happy to pay for 45 minutes -- which I should have received, but I will not pay for an hour. Bear in mind that I booked over the phone and there was no mention of paying full price for shortened services. There was also no signage in the spa indicating that this would be the case. The receptionist told me that I should pay full price, but that the next day the manager would contact me for a refund of the difference for a full hour vs 45 minutes (which is a mesely $10 and shouldn't be enough to lose a customer). The next day I called and as expected, the manager refused a refund. It upset me, but the bigger issue for me, is that she was so rude and condescending. Months later, I decided to try the spa again because it's the closest one to my home. Can you believe my masseuse was THIRTY minutes late. I waited 30 minutes with no notice from anyone at the front desk. No one was even apologetic. It's very interesting that they hold customers to an expectation of timeliness that they don't uphold themselves. read more

This place started on Belair rd and I have been a loyal customer (along with my husband-haircut4- 6x/yr-ish) and I followed Debbie to the Avenue at Whitemarsh where we've had our bumps with certain stylists and scheduling issues. I can say Stephanie was the one I settled with for years & then began seeing Kimm as well and both are great-different styles which is great. However coming here today after calling to schedule full hi-lights & cut with extra time per stylist request for today at 11:45 -which I was prompt for & there was line out of door after I walked in & 2 receptionist working!! I had to wait for a few min-ok. Not until I was in the chair was I told after I mentioned that they did tell you it's full hi lights and cut my stylist said no you're in for partial??!! WHAT. I confirmed on the phone with receptionist that I was getting full & cut. Stylist was apologetic for misunderstanding and already had a customer in back needing hair cut after my hair was hi lighted. She said I could come back & get the rest done another day & I could speak with management about this. She could probably couldn't do hi light full today. So normally I would give this place a 5 but until I see what manager has to say it will remain a 2 & that's only because of my stylist and the time I've dealt with her. I certainly don't want to have to come back for a complete full hi lite do over yet this is unacceptable!! Period when I confirmed exactly what I was supposed to be getting & extra time would be available for this Update: spoke with Amy & then Samantha-CEO who called me to get more info about my situation & after she already knew what happened but wanted verbal statement from me "to see if the spa was a good fit for me or I should find somewhere else?"... I explained & we discussed that I felt my 2 stylist were great the issue was the front desk staff making mistakes which was supposed to be addressed. We came to mutual agreement after I was given a small discount off previous issue for my time & mistake scheduling & I'm going in today to get my hair fully hi-lighted at their cost & we agreed it best to only have my appointments scheduled by only 2 people. I'm hoping after today the situation will be resolved & I highly recommend my stylist Stephanie & Kimm! JIMY KOSMAKOS!! Best in Baltimore. I started going to him about two years ago. Typically I would leave a salon and feel like I need to color over or cut my own hair differently. I can honestly say every time I've been to him not only has he nailed my look but he is completely open and honest about what I want and what he can do. He takes true pride in his work and it shows every time. The Spa is super nice and I haven't come across a person there who hasn't been pleasant. My husband usually sends me to Elizabeth Arden for spa days but there aren't any in Baltimore so he chose Spa On The Avenue. He purchased a spa day gift card with 4 services for me as a Christmas gift. I didn't use it until May due to my battle with chronic illness. I had to pay a $25 difference due to inflation. I didn't care for that policy but what's $25? So I paid it. Anyway I was way more excited to be there than the the ladies were who were at the front desk. I come with my own sunshine so I paid them no mind. My services started right away and the spa was cute. I noticed the salt room and made a mental note to book a slot for myself and my husband. I also noticed a changing room with robes. I then saw another patron wearing a nice white fluffy robe. I was hoping for the best and assumed that maybe she's a regular and knew to ask for a robe. I tipped $20 for each service and enjoyed the rest of my day. Fast forward to a few days later when I decided that I wanted to book a salt room experience for my husband as part of his Father's Day gift. On the main page of the spa's website, it mentioned a luxurious experience where EVERYONE is given a robe upon arrival. It seems like a small thing but I lugged my bag around and got dressed and undressed for my services. Needless to say, I won't be going back. RACIST SALON ALERT Recently moved to Baltimore a few years ago relocated from Virginia. I am a blonde, but my natural color is light brown. I would come in every so often to touch up my roots and add some highlights. was always on time. always tipped well. Was never rude and I always appreciated my results. Never complained. I called last month for my routine appointment and the lady on the phone told me they're not a hair salon anymore and they don't do any types of hair services only massages I thought that was odd but I thanked her for her time and I hung up. Just went in today to book a massage and I see the salon packed with people doing their hair asked the lady at the counter why they told me they don't do hair anymore and she also thought it was quite odd. They've always given me a hard time about making and booking appointments here, I'm starting to think it could be a racial thing. I hardly see customers or service members in there. That aren't Caucasian. I don't know why I was lied to, but I'm never coming back. read more

They're racist. I'm always weary of going to establishments that are predominantly white. I had an issue with timing and acknowledge I arrived 15 minutes late. However, I only received a 35 minute service (60-15 is not 35) and when I brought it to the attention of the front desk and management, they refused to work with me. I said I would pay for the 45 minute service, they said no. They said the policy wouldn't allow them to compromise. A few weeks later, I had a white friend arrive late, to test my theory. They gave her the full hour service. Why does this policy only apply to black customers and not white ones? Don't go here if you are a person of color or an ally to a person of color. Service was very pleasant here, I had my hair put up for a wedding, but I absolutely felt the price for having my shoulder length hair put up -- $75 -- was much too expensive. I have to spend that much in downtown San Francisco for a high level stylist. Having to spend that much in suburban Maryland doesn't make any sense. The interior of the spa is nice and they offer a wide range of day spa services. Their stylists are very pleasant, but the front desk crew could be better. They ignored our bride for a while and then interrupted someone else's manicure to have her manicure fixed. When I went to pay, the desk girl didn't even bother to ask if I wanted to rebook. I was on the fence about giving them a second chance but this sealed the deal. The shampoo is the worst. It's like they're trying to rush you out of the chair. My hair was only clean on the top and sides, when I got home it was clear that the back hadn't been shampooed. If this was a one off I wouldn't say anything but it's the third time it's happened. It's a seemingly little thing to be upset about but the shampoo and scalp massage is my favorite part and this was barely 3 minutes. Even after I asked her to do a "deep clean". And no scalp massage. I've been a long-time customer of Spa on the Avenue and my family, friends, and co-workers have given me many gift cards over the years. This week I called to make an appointment for myself and a friend. I asked that they check the gift card numbers and was told that both had expired. The total of the two gift cards was $82. As we all know, we've been in the midst of an unprecedented, 19-month pandemic. I was told by the general manager, Marni, that under no circumstances could she extend the date. I asked that she call the owner. She did, and the owner wouldn't extend the courtesy of honoring the gift cards, citing the gift card system wouldn't allow it and Maryland law. It's beyond my comprehension that a business owner, Debbie, would lose a customer over $82, a small amount of money for her business but a large amount for future business. I've alerted my friends and family to never again purchase gift cards for anyone from SOTA but to please use About Faces as I have a gift card from the same time frame that they've chosen to honor. Marni and the other employee I spoke with at SOTA were, at times, extremely rude, condescending, and talked over me several times. Because of your attitude of indifference, you've lost this customer. Obviously this attitude comes from the owner and she hasn't learned that Customer satisfaction = success. read more

I've gone here for years for waxing and I've never had a bad wax job/ experience. I've had multiple estheticians and they've all been great but my favorite by far is Barbara. She really listens to what I want and checks in with me multiple times during the wax to make sure I like the shaping she's doing. At the end she asks if i want anymore plucking and doesn't mind at all if i say yes. She's so sweet and personable too- no awkward silence. The only complaint I have is the pricing but that's not up to the estheticians. It is a luxury and I obviously think their quality and care is worth it since I always go back. I visited this salon for the first time in late June to get waxed for a trip to the beach. I went with a friend so we could catch up and 'spa' together. Both she and I have had MANY spa services over the years. I found the front desk staff to be apathetic and not helpful at best, rude at worst. This is supposed to be a DAY SPA. Where I feel like a queen when I walk through the door, right? It was just so-so. No one offered me a drink, they didn't ask if I'd visited before, no friendly welcome, etc. The younger girl SAW me walk through the door and wait in line and seemed surprised when I said I was checking in for a service. The gal that waxed me was great... I'll say that. Did a pretty good job. But when I went back up front to pay and leave the tip, the girl acted all put out that I didn't catch the name of my aesthetician. I walked up and she said "can I help you?" I said, uh, yeah I'm checking out. "Ok and who were you with?" Ok, seriously, does anyone really catch the name of the person that's doing their service? I said, " I Don't remember her name, I had a bikini wax." She actually had the nerve to act PUT OUT that she had to look this up for me. Oh, and my service was good thanks. I wish there were was some sort of magic phone app for everyone to see exactly how much I've really spent on spa treatments in my lifetime. I would just whip out my phone, type in the app and it would produce some ridiculous number like $12,187 and then I'd show it to them and say "Yeah, you're not getting any of that after today. Thanks" But alas, such a thing does not exist and they'll probably never realize that they lost me as a client, because they never noticed me in the first place. read more

I walk into get a relaxer...$250 later.... This place is expensive. Granted, it's probably what you'd pay in DC...but this is White Marsh. I needed a relaxer, stat. So desperate was I, after my meal next door at Kobe, I stopped in here to see if they had a stylist who was experienced with relaxers. They had one, and I made an appointment for the next morning without asking such pesky questions such as cost. I'm not used to hoity-toity relaxers. A nicely applied Dark-n-Lovely works just as well as any other, as far as I'm concerned. But she used some new fangled relaxer I'd never seen. Trying so hard not to correct her through the process, I watched (and asked a bunch of questions) and feared for my hair. Thankfully, my hair was still all there when I was rinsed out. As we were back at the stylist's station, she started to blow dry my hair without cutting. I've seriously never heard of this. I wasn't looking for a new style, but a trim to tame the ends. That wasn't in the system, so she added it and trimmed my ends. Happyiness abounds. So, I'm thrilled my hair is straight and my ends clipped. I go to pay. This is where my disgruntlement comes. My last relaxer experience at another salon, I paid $70. This time, I paid double for not what I consider double the experience. The other part of my bill was for Moroccan Oil products. So, my main complaint is that this place is expensive for what it is and that the trim isn't included in the price of the relaxer (WTF?). read more

So I'm a little late in writing this review but wanted others to know why I do NOT recommend buying giftcards from this company. I'm a mom of 3, had my 3rd in April. A couple years ago, my husband purchased a spa package that included an hour massage, a facial and a manicure or pedicure. He was given a plastic giftcard with the package selected on the business card. The dollar amount on the card was $230. I called in February to try to get in for a prenatal massage. I was informed that their prices had changed and I wouldn't be able to get everything that package originally had unless i paid more. Kind of irritating but I get that the gift card was over a year old, so ok. I wasn't able to find a massage time that worked with my schedule when someone could watch the kids so decided I'd get one after baby. I had been busy with kids but after having the 3rd, I was pretty tense, getting migraines and decided to go get a message right around mothers day. I was bummed that that weekend they only had a half hour slot available. I was so tense I'd decided to take it. I got there, handed over my giftcard with the package still paperclipped to it to show the value. I was informed that my $230 giftcard had expired! Mind you, there was no expiration date on the card. I knew I couldn't get the original package but never imagined the amount would expire. I was disgusted. I almost just left but the lady at the front desk said she'd call the manager while I was in my massage and see if anything could be done. My massage was quick, but great. I came out and the lady said "I have good news and bad news. "The good news is you can spend the money on the card but the bad news is it has to be spent today." Keep in mind, my massage was over at 5:45 and they closed at 6. So I couldn't spend it on any spa services, they were getting ready to close. I begged to make an appointment for a massage the following day even, anything to use the value. I was told no. My only option was to purchase $230 worth of nail polish, hair and skin care stuff that they sell in their lobby. I couldn't even use the card for the massage I'd received that day because they'd made me pay ahead. I'm a stay at home mom. My beauty routine consists of dry shampoo, under eye concealer and eyeliner...all from target. I knew nothing about these products they had and only has 15 minutes to read labels and see what might work for me. I am disgusted that $230 would just expire when there is no expiration date written on the card. Not only that, but the fact that they couldn't even be a tad understanding and give me even a week to use up the value of the card. Instead, I had 15 minutes to buy a bunch of crap I don't need. Please, if the person you're gifting a card to is busy, and might not get to use their package in a timely manner, go elsewhere. Went for the first time today on a recommendation. I wanted to cut 6in of my hair and totally have a new style which is pretty bold for never visiting this salon. I was in and out in under an hour and I love my cut. She did exactly what I asked for as well as making suggestions...what every person needs since we are not the experts. Ever since they did my hair for my wedding in 2012 I haven't been back and I've turned off alot of people wanting to try this Spa out. I walked into the place I was getting ready at and my veil fell out and all my curles were flat. The woman who did my hair gave me a goldy lock curle and I asked her to put more in but not as tight. Well she didn't like it so she started to rake my hair with the curling iron. I had 2 hair pieces and 6 bobby pins in my hair... my aunt patty ended up putting a Topsy turvey in my hair before the wedding. My hair looked horrible. I called the spa the day after to complain and all they gave me was my refund of 75 dollars to get my hair done. I have not been back since and I will never recommend this place. My whole family used to come there grandmom mom sisters friends... now they lost business from our whole family.... and gained bad publicity. read more

I have been here a few times. If for some reason I can't get in with my usual massage therapist, I found a girl who is quite good and can usually squeeze me in. Much larger inside that it appears, they have areas for hair, makeup and all kinds of spa services in the back. They set up the inside to be very serene and clean feeling, while also being very comfortable and classy. Very spa-esque I'd say. This particular time, they were able to squeeze in a friend and I who was dumped on by her hair and makeup artist the week before her wedding. The makeup artists were thorough and used the right colors to make us look our best. The hair stylists got us out the door on time, and the hair stayed where it belonged for the rest of the day. I love Spa on the Ave! I've been coming here since they opened when my stylist moved here. It is a very stylish facility and they offer many great services besides hair care, from nails to waxing, massages to facials. Carol has been my stylist for over 11 years, and she is terrific! I alternate between full and partial foil highlights and the occasional trim, and the service is always efficient and friendly; Carol is practically part of the family now! The shampoo service is also very considerate, making sure the water temp is ok and that you are comfortable. The front desk is always prompt; they don't leave you standing there feeling awkward like they do at some salons. You are greeted warmly and given clear instructions as to where to go until your stylist comes out to walk you back to their station. I always have an enjoyable experience here and look forward to each visit. read more

Today I just walked out due to sitting there for 15 plus minutes past my appointment time with no heads up on how behind my esthetician was going to be. Several months ago I came in for a blow out and waited for almost 30 minutes past my appointment before I finally had to ask the receptionist what was going on, hence my lack of patience this time. I get it that things don't always run completely on time, but being in the service industry there should be a higher standard towards your customer service. A small heads up that the appointment is running a tad bit behind goes a long way. Otherwise I'm sitting there anxiously looking at the clock when I could have continued shopping on the avenue or not rushed to get there on time. Will not be returning. read more

Came today for a lip wax and Amanda was great. Very nice and did a good job. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is because she didn't show me with a mirror the end result. But once I got in my car I saw she did a great job. Very fast too, I recommend her! She even put some Tea tree oil on after and I'm a huge fan of Tea tree oil!! Have to edit my review, waking up the next day I have 5-6 whiteheads on my lip. Ugh! This has never happened to me anywhere else!! Today was the first time I had ever been to Spa on the Ave. I went in for a perm, but they were also able to fit me in for an eyebrow wax, which I really appreciated. Everyone I dealt with was super nice and helpful, even if they weren't the ones giving me a service. Pam did my perm, and I will certainly be going back to her next time I need anything done to my hair. We had the best chat! She was so much fun, which is great when you're having something done that takes a long time. The perm was perfect - exactly what I wanted. Don't do a couples massage here it is a colossal waste of money... Went to the Boulevard while this one was being remodeled and had a great experience... figured with this one being remodeled it would be nice. It wasn't, it is not a spa it is a hair salon with a massage room... they advertise a tranquil lounge, there was none, we got there early to relax a bit before hand but we sat in uncomfortable chairs until precisely our massage time, where we were led to a tiny room with 2 massage tables. Asked to prep there, no locker rooms, no robes... not a spa experience... my husband enjoyed his massage with Cassidy a great deal. I had Gina, it wasn't great, it was barely good. I was highly disappointed... after wards we were greated outside the room with water and ushered oout an on our way... I would be okay with this had it been priced accordingly, it was not. It was an absolute dismissal experience for the cost... Save your money, go to The Boulevard location, they do a much better job... this place may look pretty , but it is not a spa, and Gina is not a massage therapist who listens... spoke to someone afterwards, and even though their website clearly states they have a serenity lounge, I was informed they don't and that it was just too bad I didn't enjoy my massage, they would look into it... so basically buyer beware, they can lie about amenities and give poor service, but they still expect you to pay top dollar... read more
