**This is not a review of the business overall, but more a review of one particular massage therapist.** My wife and I decided to splurge on massages during our weekend getaway in the SLO area, and we came here based on the Yelp reviews. We got a couples massage in the same room - I got Christine and my wife got Angel. As it turns out I'm glad we were in the same room, because walking out in a daze after paying I would have doubted myself if there hadn't been a witness. I paid $20 extra for a deep tissue massage because my back has crazy knots and I like a lot of pressure. So when Christine was mostly using long strokes that were medium-pressure at best (more of a Swedish style), I said "I can take more pressure than that." Christine replied, "Seriously?" as though it were the most outrageous thing I could have said. I was stunned. She then explained that she doesn't like to "hurt muscles" and at the same time started wailing on my back with her elbows - cranking the pressure to what I would call extreme as though to say "fine, you want this?" So I said, "That's a little too much." Again, a pretty basic request, right? She said, "Well, just tell me what you want" and, realizing this person was not understanding or able to handle the simplest feedback (how much more basic does it get than asking for a little more or a little less pressure during a massage?) I said "I just want to relax." Unbelievably, she laughed and said, "Well this isn't the kind of massage you get if you want to relax!" At that point I just shut up because I was getting more stressed by the minute. I said, "I just want a full body massage with deep tissue work - you know more about what that means than I do!" figuring that the best I could do at this point was just let her do whatever she does and try to get something out of it. It's an unfortunate place to end up, but I can only afford to get a massage a few times a year, and this was a splurge for us during our one weekend getaway in years. By the end I was able to relax for the most part, and had a decent, somewhat uneven massage (almost no time on my lower back, glutes, and thighs - lots of time on my upper back, calves and feet). But I shouldn't have had to endure such a crappy bedside manner and I shouldn't have felt reprimanded for making a pressure request. I ended up paying AND tipping (partially because I was so confused afterwards, partially because I believe in paying people in the service industry no matter what) but as my wife and I discussed what happened on the car ride back to our hotel, she confirmed that she too had been shocked by what she heard. I thought about calling and saying all this to the business directly, but I didn't want to get into an argument or feel gaslit, so that's what Yelp is for. My wife's massage was good, and she was totally relaxed except for what she overheard, so no criticism of Angel. And Christine is fine at what she does - but I think her responses were unprofessional and unnecessary. Why not just add a little pressure? Why is that something to question? Honestly, if she had apologized afterwards I wouldn't even have written this review. But she didn't. Maybe it was an off day for her. But from my experience, if you book with Christine, don't expect her to take any direction and know that things will go better if you don't have any feedback. read more
