So this review is really about the flight crew who were extremely kind, very conscientious and accommodating. We showed up at the airport at 4 PM for a 6PM flight. The flight was delayed about 25 minutes which was no big deal. We boarded the plane and was happy because my daughter and I Got an extra seat in our row. As we were sitting on the plane, they made an announcement that it looked like we had two tires that needed to be changed. They informed us that it would take approximately 45 minutes for maintenance to arrive and then approximately another hour. They had a suite on the plane for about 15 or 20 minutes and then came back on the announcements and told us that we were going to have to do you board the plane and that we could leave or are belongings. At that point we actually had to stand online to get our boarding passes re-scanned to exit the point. We then were off the plane for about an hour when they made an announcement That this plane could not fly out this evening. They were flying in another plane which would arrive in about an hour and a half at that point. But that meant that we had to now get back on the plane and get our belongings and bring them off the plane we then had to wait until they called us to get back on the plane retrieve our items and then get back off the plane and then wait a couple of hours for the other plane to arrive. We once again stood on line for a placement and seats and boarded the plane once again. They did give each passenger a $100 credit for their troubles and once we finally took off at about 10pm, the crew members on the place were wonderful. read more

I can not state how bad my latest experience with Southwest airlines was. I wish I could give a Zero. After being kicked off my flight to see my grandkids in FL at Christmas i thought i was done. But they gave everyone 25,000 pts so i decided to try again. It is very difficult to get a direct flight even to Chicago. On my return flight i was getting off my plane in Baltimore and was notified my flight to MacArthur airport was boarding. I had to hastily push pass many people get off my flight and run across the airport, just barely making my flight. I AM DONE WITH SOUTHWEST. They turned what should of been 2 hours of air travel into a very bad situation. I'll take the train and airtrain to JFK and use JetBlue. There was a time when Southwest Airlines was considered America's Discount Airlines but that was quite a number of years ago, like everything Southwest has evolved into a major carrier and with that comes change. I don't frequently fly Southwest by choice but there are times when it's makes sense and flying into Islip, NY it makes the most sense. Like any airlines there are things I don't like and things that can be really frustrating. The boarding protocol and lack of assigned seating are the two things I dislike the most about Southwest but I have learned to deal with it so my distaste has lessened over time. Boarding Procedure by Group Group 1 - Disabled Pre-Boarding - I completely support pre-boarding for anyone legitimately battling a physical and/or mental disability. But this policy is the most abused policy I've experienced with any airline, as an example I've seen 8 - 10 wheelchairs lined up for pre-boarding, once we arrived at the destination there were no wheelchairs in sight and these scammers deplaned and walked up the jetway unassisted at speeds that astounded the rest of the passengers and fight attendants alike. Group 2 - A List - These are the Southwest frequent flyers and the passengers who purchase the higher priced fares or the ones like me who are willing to pay the $40 to grab a boarding pass numbered A1 - A15. This ensures you get a choices seat as close to the front as possible. But beware I have landed A1 a number of times and have had as many as 22 people from Group 1 board in front of me so don't think you'll get any seat you want but the odds increase. Group 3 - Family Boarding - Any adult or family traveling with at least one child six years old or younger may board during Family Boarding, which occurs after the "A" group has boarded and before the "B" group begins boarding. Group 4 - B List - The odds are still very good you'll have some overhead space available for your luggage and you'll likely land a window or aisle seat but it will likely be in back of the plane, you'll also have first chance at grabbing a center seat closer to the front. Group 5 - C List - These are the "center seaters" they are the bargain hunters, the ones who would never pay the early bird check-in fee or for an upgrades, they likely purchased a "wanna get away" fare or had to book at the last minute, this is the last remaining remnants of "the discount airline". If you're flying out of Islip, Long Island, then there's a 99.9% chance your on Southwest Airlines. They basically own this airport and the Florida routes. We've been flying Southwest for years, maybe two decades. They're very easy to deal with, good rates and customer friendly. Although I do all my booking on line I have had occasion to need customer service. With them, the customer, that's me, is always right and they do all they can to accommodate you. We all know the open seating policy, and it seems to work. No charge for carry on bags, there is at least one airline that does charge, and your first two bags fly free. We never and I mean never check luggage. We have packing down to a science and I can go away for s month and just need a carry on. Very bad experience many years ago, but for another time. My most recent experience with Southwest has turned me off from them for good. They're cheap for a reason. I booked a round trip flight from BDL to BWI. I had no trouble flying to Baltimore. The attendants were nice and didn't have any major issues. The flight was delayed an hour but we didn't mind. Here's where things went downhill fast. Our flight back to BDL was scheduled to depart at 5:45. The night before we were unable to check in because we were automatically put on standby. We attempted to call customer service and we were met with a 2 hour wait time to speak with someone. We decided to arrive early to our gate to speak with someone at Southwest. We get to the airport around 2:30pm. The Southwest employees were very nice, but extremely unhelpful. We were told buying a ticket on Southwest does not actually guarantee a seat. They overbooked the flight so we were put on standby (how they decide who gets put on that list is beyond me). There were flights on other airlines so we asked about getting a refund for our tickets instead. An instant refund would be a Southwest credit to "fly anywhere we'd like." As if that makes up for them stealing our money and not giving us a seat. There were people ahead of us on the standby list for an already full flight. If we wanted a monetary refund, we'd have to call the (800) number. Now it makes sense why there's a 2 hour wait to speak with someone. We knew we wouldn't be getting our money back, so we decided to play it safe and fly on the next flight leaving at 9:50pm. We were at the airport 8 hours early now. We killed time by hanging around the gate. The flight before ours was delayed, which delayed our flight. We switched gates and waited another hour. We didn't board until 11:00pm. Southwest did not give a shit about us. All they care about is our money. Even the flight attendant said "no one loves you or your money more than Southwest." We received no sympathy or compensation for being lied to about having a seat. Moral of the story: sometimes you get what you pay for (in this case we didn't). Don't fly Southwest. Most pleasant experience I ever had flying. By far. Boarded for 6 a.m. leaving Central Islip NY and landed in Tampa at 8 a.m. No crazy lines and disorganization like with NYC airports. I always like flying southwest when ever i can. It is much more convenient flying out Macarther Airport rather than JFK or Laguardia. I love Going to Vegas and Southwest is one of the few airlines that goes there non stop. I have flown Southwest dozens of times and never had any issues at all. Flight attendants have always been great. The only thing I do not like about Southwest airlines is that it does not have assigned seating. Southwest Airlines (SW) flying out of ISLIP to West Palm Beach PBI was the only airport that we would book for years. We normally fly this connection ten times a year, but now only once a year. There are two very simple reasons for our recent change. After many complaints that I have stated to Southwest over there pre-boarding policy, I am finally believe that they really do not care about this one connection issue. Also, SW Islip recently decreased the amount of non-stop flights on this segment, which also affects our choice to choose SW anymore out of Islip. When you have paid for early bird boarding or business select and find yourself embarking the plane where available seating for two is only in the rear half of the plane; that is seriously crazy. There is a reason why they call this segment the "Miracle Flight". You can crawl on board or embark on a wheel chair, but dance in the aisles while you disembark. It's a Miracle! Then you have those bold individuals that hold seats for those friends or family that have "C" boarding. Come-on Man! When does this end! My policy is simple, if you are pre boarding because you need assistance, prove it. Have a doctor note in advance of the flight that might cover you for several flights in the future and if you pre-board, you disembark last. Then maybe the flight will no longer be called the "Miracle Flight". I am all for pre-barding for those that need assistance. SW just needs a better policy to support those that truly need pre-boarding. I do love the airline for other domestic segments, but I have noted a low review score because I believe SW should have a consistent policy of providing their clientele an enjoyable flying experience on all their flights combined. read more

Going to Long Island? Do yourself a favor and fly into Islip MacArthur Airport via Southwest Airlines. It really can't get any easier. There is no assigned seating, you simply check in and print out your boarding pass 24 hours prior to the flight. You can also have it texted, they make it so easy. Warning: do not try checking in five minutes early, it's like a bank, you must wait until the exact minute to do it. Trust me, I am speaking from experience. Depending on when you check in you will be assigned to sections A, B or C. Don't worry though, you can always upgrade if you really must have a window or isle seat. You can do it at the airport for $40 or online but I am not sure of the price to do it online. Upgrade or not, as long as you have a boarding pass you are guaranteed a seat. Snacks are limited to peanuts and either crackers or cookies. Complimentary beverages are the standard soda, juice, coffee or tea. Nothing fancy, but you are welcome to bring on your own snacks if you want or need more. Why do I love Southwest? Besides the low fares and easy boarding process, I love this airline because of the employees. They are funny and sometimes they will randomly sing! Yup, after my flight landed in Islip, one of the flight attendants got on the speaker and broke out a funny song called Welcome to Long Island. It was random and hysterical, guess what? When she was done, all of the passengers clapped and laughed. Sometimes they are really funny when the passengers are slowly getting to their seats. Yesterday we had a flight attendant who was on the loud speaker calling everyone Buttercup and saying and I quote "come on people, your picking a seat not buying real estate or a car". She finished up with "Your New Yorkers, you do things in a NY minute, so find a seat all ready". It may sound sarcastic but really it's not. The flight attendants are funny and they are friendly. I swear, some of them should be doing stand-up and working the comedy clubs. MacArthur airport and southwest maybe the best combination since peanut butter and jelly. There terminals are large and spacious and there customer service reps are some of the best around. I fly almost every week and at first it can be a little discerning that there are no set seats with southwest. Let me tell you this is a good thing. They give you the ability to check in 24 hours before your flight time amid thie sooner you check in the earlier you can board your flight and choose any seat. This allows you to never have to worry about not being able to sit with your friends or family, like other airlines that you get put into a grab bag of seats and never know where your going to be. The on flight staff I have never had a problem with and southwests Customer service is bar none. If there is a problem there is no haggling or fighting they admit they screwed up and have a voucher if some sort to save on a future flight. You haven't experienced flying this easy if you haven't flown with southwest. Side note: I'm not a fan of the new reward system but I am willing to give it a little time before I pass judgement. I am a big Southwest airlines proponent, I use them for travel and pleasure as often as I can. I trusted them in how they speak about people and how people should be treated, unfortunately I have now experienced twice rude and unacceptable behavior from the same individual. It was reported, emailed the day that it happened. the first time, I did not say anything chalking it up to the guy was having a bad day. But the same individual on a different trip from the same airport did the same thing. I contacted Southwest twice. This last occurrence happened in November 2021. I heard nothing from Southwest, except a we received your email, blah blah blah. I sent in another email, in late December because there was never follow-up. Got the same standard email response. This is a great company, but bad apples need to be spoken too, that is all I wanted, to be ignored and never be contacted, very disappointed in a company my family chooses to do business with. I like Southwest Airlines - especially since they fly out of Long Island MacArthur airport - about 15 minutes from home and an extremely easy airport to get through/park at etc. I use them primarily to fly between Long Island and Florida or Long Island and Baltimore-Washington - any other itinerary has too many stops and inconvenient flight times. I see a lot of complaints about their prices and seating arrangements here. Southwest happens to be an airline you need to know how to work - if you know you're flying to Florida in the summer or at spring break = book it way in advance - pay for the earlybird check in - its worth the $12.50 each way (even if you're the last number in group A, you'll be guaranteed an aisle seat or window if thats your preference). The space on these planes gets wider the closer to the wings. Emergency exit seats are my pick - unless I'm traveling with the kids - then we go right behind those seats. The ability to change tickets with no fees is great for me as my travel changes often. Free checked bags is great as well. Flight attendants are usually very friendly and accomodating. For me, Southwest is the only way to fly to Florida living in Suffolk county on Long Island. Even if you have to make a stop in Baltimore and stop fo an hour - it is sometimes less travel time than the time it takes to get to JFK or LGA in NY. read more

Total Lack of proper training caused me having to purchase a day of flight from another airline at a separate airport in excess $1000. I know there is some mixed reviews about southwest but im am very happy with southwest. I flew from ISP to MCO and they were quick. We got there early and they were so nice and polite. I have really bad flight anxiety and i felt quite comfortable on their planes. Also, i had to change my flight and they changed it with no penalty. You just have to pay the difference if the new flight you want cost more money. The only reason it doesnt get 5 stars was because the returning flight back from MCO to ISP was extremely bumpy during landing. I was legit freaking out. The pilot should of been a little more careful. However, my experience with southwest was nice and i would definitely fly with them again. read more

I have had two daughters fly into Islip MacArthur Airport this week and every flight has been a horror show. One daughter departed Sacramento and was forced to fly to Chicago Midway, then to Baltimore and finally to Islip. All of her flights were delayed and her luggage was left in Baltimore. Her flight landed after midnight and we had to return to the airport the next day for her luggage. My other daughter is now returning to Pittsburgh and is currently waiting for her plane in Baltimore to take her to Pittsburgh. So far, the plane from Islip left over one hour late due to hydraulic problems and the flight to Pittsburgh from Baltimore is delayed. They have replaced aircraft and have move their departing gate so far. Half the passengers in Islip have missed their connection in Baltimore and have to rebook. I realize there have been challenges due to the pandemic, but it appears that Southwest is being run by Laurel and Hardy, as well as the Three Stooges. I wish I could give negative stars! read more

Southwest has quick and easy commercial air travel figured out! On average their rates are lower than the competition (immediate plus for them). Then they give everyone a number to queue up so that when boarding there is no insane push of "me first, me first, me first" to hand your pass to the agent. Once on board there is no assigned seating (although this can occassional cause minor annoyances, it expediates the boarding process). In my experience their flights go on time, their staff is friendly, and the complete experience is (dare I say it) enjoyable. read more

I had a horrible experience flying Southwest today from Islip to West Palm Beach. First off, my flight was extremely full because it was an afternoon flight after the holiday. Next, most of the passengers were senior citizens who needed wheelchair assistance which made getting a decent seat on my flight incredibly difficult. I wasn't feeling very well and wasn't thrilled about being on a plane while not feeling well-I managed to get priority boarding because of my not feeling very well. The worst is yet to come. It had looked like I would have an empty middle seat in my row which would have been great since I wasn't feeling so well. Not my luck-at the last second, a gentleman asked for the seat. The guy decided it was ok to sprawl his legs out in my seat space. I asked politely if he could move his legs and he did for 5min and then had them back again spread out. I went to Daryl the flight attendant to alert him of my situation and he said he would observe him. Daryl walked by and asked the guy if he had a problem with the space and he told him "oh no" and moved his legs. Soon as Daryl walked away he went back to sprawling his legs out again!! I complained to Daryl again but he did nothing and I felt he didn't care. Southwest you lost a customer and I will make sure everyone I know hears how my problem was not handled! read more

I have always flown with Southwest. When I arrived to Florida, Someone accidentally picked up luggage by mistake. I was upset and nervous. The women working the baggage claim area was very calm a helpful. She quickly was able to track all the information of the passenger. They offered me a $50 refund for anything I purchased to make up for the lost baggage. They also said they would contact me when the person realized it was a mistake. We left the airport and headed to our home in Leesburg. About an hour after arriving, we received a call that they had found my bag. At least when you take off from ISP it is always on time, and you get your bags promptly, but this is thanks to the under utilized airport not southwest. In general the fares are about the same level as jetblue etc, but the flight is essentially taking a bus ride. You get on a flight that just came from one location, and is going to probably 3 more. Then there is no assigned seating, so you hope you get an "A" boarding pass or you are walking all over looking for a seat in between 2 strangers. Their terminals pretty much stink, and there is no in flight entertainment. I would recommend for short flights, but for long flights it is jet blue all the way. read more

We are both connecting through BWI, except that I'm on the 2:20 flight and they were on the 12:20. There were seats on the 12:20 flight and I would not have gotten to my destination any sooner, but I could have travelled with my children to ensure they got to their connecting flight. I like flying southwest because islip is close to my nesconset home and i fly all the time to MSP Minneapolis. I think the service is great and the tickets are pretty fair as far as competitive pricing goes. Only thing i don't like is how there is absolute chaos when boarding and exiting the plane. Southwest should enforce a remain seated policy when landing because people in the last row will jump up and grab two carry on's that end up getting bumped into you while your waiting the next 20 minutes to get off the plane. I know people especially new yorkers are in a rush for everything but its rude and down right stupid. Other than that i like the airline just think a few things should be changed around. read more

Flying Southwest from Islip to Orlando and back several times has made me aware that you do get what you pay for -- for the really inexpensive fares (which mean leaving at unpopular hours, usually), you wind up pretty tightly packed together. I've yet to be on a plane that wasn't fully sold out. This means you wind up cheek-and-jowl with other passengers. It's not the most comfortable in terms of legroom or cabin space, so if you're exceptionally tall, you may want to seek pre-boarding if possible, so you can get first-row or exit-row seats. That said, Southwest is very good about helping people with 'special' needs. The disabled can preboard, which has been great for me since I walk with a cane, at best, and usually wind up in a wheelchair at the Orlando end, at least. The food, as with many other airlines, is pretty much nonexistent. A snack of something most people on restricted diets can't eat and a beverage of your choice is about it, so if you want more than that, you'll have to bring it along. Islip doesn't offer a huge number of carry-out options that are all that palatable, so consider getting your food beforehand. Just remember you can't actually buy bottled water or soda and bring it through security -- those have to be bought on-site. WiFi is available on most flights now, but $8 for 2.5 hours of service struck me as not worth it. I brought my usual paperback book instead. A DVD player or iPod is a good choice to bring along, as well, because there are always lots of kids on these flights, and they tend to be loud. Luggage service is reasonably swift -- in most cases, by the time I got to the carousel in Orlando, I had, at most, a 10 minute wait for my bags Even so, for $110 for the low-end fares is affordable. For those of us who want to travel inexpensively, it's a reasonable value for money. read more

Truth is, I hate the open seating policy at Southwest. If you want an "A" boarding group on your boarding pass you've gotta buy a Business Select ticket or be a Rapid Rewards A List or A List Preferred member. You could pay $30-40 (per flight) to be bumped into the A's if it really means that much to you. So anyway, boarding the plane takes forever because everyone is hogging up the aisle seats and they've gotta remove their kiesters for you to be able to wedge yourself into that middle seat. There are no monitors like newer airlines-- such as Virgin or JetBlue. This is pretty much the most budget of the major airlines. It IS pretty sweet to be able to fly direct from ISP to multiple Florida destinations on a daily basis and the prices for this "gotta get away" tickets are ultra competitive. Anyway, it's a mixed bag at Southwest and they certainly do fill a need. read more

Horrible flight from Louisville to Baltimore to Long Island. 2 hour delay after waiting 2 hours for a connection. The stewardess thinks she is a comedian. I don't need jokes after waiting 4 hours. Have never had a bad experience flying Southwest. My family and I use it every time we go to Florida which is semi-regularly. The most recent time however, our flight got delayed from 6:25 AM to 1:15 PM; needless to say everyone was severely disgruntled. Southwest gave every customer a $200 voucher, which I felt was more than fair. We ended up having a nice, quick flight to Orlando, and had an even better flight back to Islip on a 7:50 PM flight. I am a big fan of southwest. 2 bags checked free. Need I say more? I like the free seating policy - some dont - fly with another carier then, this is working for them. Typical funny flight attendants - you see them all over you-tube. The rates are competative, and it is the onbly airline I'd consider for NY-FLA travel. I've had delays, and inconvenineces, but southwest is fast with the free vouchers, they like to keep their customers. read more

Southwest is the city bus of the sky. Noisy, crowded and way too hot. Unlike a city bus however, there are rules and regulations.

Southwest has really diminished over the years. It is impossible to get a direct flight anywhere and on a recent trip to California it took me 12 hours and 4 airports to get there with every stage of my flight being delayed. On a positive note service by the attendants is always pretty good. read more
