I did not see the words New York anywhere on the menu, so I don't believe that Smoke is making that claim, but another reviewer mentioned NY, so I will too. I've lived in Utah 40-years now, but grew up in the immediate suburbs of NYC (Long Island) and while many factors make a real NY pizza experience, for me, the crust is the foundation. Somehow, despite the odds, Smoke got the crust right. Thin (perhaps a bit too thin, but not really important), chewy with just the right amount of flavor, something you don't leave on the plate after eating the toppings. Bring a traditionalist, meaning a NY pizza isn't supposed to be a casserole, I ordered a simple pepperoni and cheese pizza, exactly what I grew up with, and shockingly, I wasn't disappointed. I think you'll enjoy it too. Remember, you're experiencing NY style pizza in the proverbial middle of nowhere (with apologies to the residents of Blanding), so it doesn't have to be perfect!

The owners response on to me on Google Maps confirms that their employee was eating pepperonis and sticking fingers in her mouth while preparing a customer's pizza. As I was paying for my pizza, I witnessed a young female employee stick her fingers into her mouth and then into the pepperoni tub as she made a customer's pizza. I saw her continue to eat pepperonis as she prepared the pizza. I pointed this out to the clerk (a 20-30 year old male with a dark ponytail) and I said it was inappropriate and disgusting for an employee to be touching the customer's food while sticking her fingers into her mouth, and eating, and that I don't want someone else's spit on my food. The man got visibly upset and nasty, and said in a whiny tone that she wasn't doing anything wrong and it's totally fine to have your fingers in your mouth while making food to sell to the public. I was shocked at his response - it's one thing for a child to make a silly mistake while cooking, another for a grown man to not see the obvious health hazard here. We paid for our pizza and left (to avoid making a scene, and to support the employees working who were innocently doing their jobs), but threw it away out of fear of retribution since the cashier was so nasty to me. I've filed a complaint with both the city of Monticello and the San Juan County public health department. If employees are willing to be that disgusting in public in front of customers, I shudder to think of how they behave when out of sight.

Before ordering, I specifically asked about the bread because we like having enough to sop up the broth, the way you would expect at a good Italian restaurant. Our waitress said she would bring as much bread as we wanted. There were three of us, and the appetizer came with three pieces of bread. Given the earlier conversation, we later asked for three more pieces. The request seemed to bother her. When she delivered the extra bread, sensing her frustration, we said she could add it to the bill, and she told us she already had. For the items noted above, plus one additional limonata soda, the meal came to over $60. I typically tip over 20%, but I took the extra bread charge off the tip, and the tip was still over 17%. He and his partner, Jaime Katherine took over the old Maggie's Pizza, keeping some former menu favorites and adding some wonderful new pizzas. We ordered the Supremo, our traditional go-to in the old days (pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, olives, onions, etc) and it was as good as ever. But wait, there's more! We tried the Green House, a delightful vegetarian pizza with artichokes, basil, marinated green olive, roma tomatoes, red onions and spinach. Wonderful subtle combination of flavors. We also ordered the Chicken Pesto pizza, a real palate pleaser with just the right amount of basil and garlic, not too overpowering. To start, the place will be open for takeout only Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday from 4:30 to 8:00 pm. (closed Tuesday-Thursday.) You can order on the phone or in-person at the front window. Be prepared for a bit of a wait as they've been mobbed opening weekend.
