We recently returned to Denver from a SW and NW trip that started Oct 23, 2024. Just days, after…read morewe had started our trip our 2015 Prius experienced an intermittent overheating warning light. We stopped at Dependable Automotive Service without an appointment and the very personable service tech manager very quickly took our car, plugged it into his diagnostic scanner, then put the car up on the rack. He revealed to me the likely issues including the emission system that could be the culprit. This was not a simple radiator or hose leak. He pointed out 5 possible problems. Due to the complexity of the issue and the fact that he would have to order parts not available nearby he indicated that for him to work on the issue it would likely take a week to repair. We were on a tight schedule so this was a problem. After a discussion with the manager he agreed with me that we would likely be okay going onto the Toyota dealership on our route through Flagstaff to get assistance. Well, as it turned out that one of the 5 possible problems was the culprit though it was also, regretfully, the most expensive problem in the catalytic system costing us three grand. But we were fine the rest of the trip well into December. We very much appreciate the Dependable Automotive manager's professional and expedient help in us getting back on our trip. He revealed a long and strong technical experience and competence that I have often found rare with so many independent auto servicers in my well over 50 years of owning vehicles. It damaged my vehicle enough that it needed repairs to be drivable again. So, my car was towed on a holiday. He answered the phone for the highway patrol....but not for me or my father when he came to get me. We tried all of the numbers of course to no avail. I don't live in the area, my dad lived over 4 hours away. We couldn't stick around waiting for him to feel like answering our calls. I was left with no choice but to break a window to get my stuff out...load it into my dad's car...and leave. Keep in mind...my vehicle's alarm was going off while I did all of this...and since I was on a trip I had a lot with me. Close to what looked like his house...as well as his office. He didn't come out or say anything (that means that if you have a vehicle stored at this place...it's contents aren't exactly safe). We tried several times to reach him by phone...not just that day either. He never answered our calls. He never responded to our messages. He never called me. The highway patrol person who called him made sure my phone number was included with my keys for him...but he never used it. The lack of communication was so glaring that my parents helped me buy a different vehicle because they felt it was the best option. Despite having a different vehicle, I still tried calling again on my way back through, again no joy. Then, around a month later, he called my insurance company and tried to file a claim wanting storage fees! Something that wouldn't have been a problem if he had picked up the flippin' phone and called me at any point. He told them he couldn't get a hold of me. Really dude? Geico closed that claim real quick, but nice try. It has now been over 2 years...and I am still mad about this. I loved that car so much, but because he couldn't be bothered to answer the phone, I had to leave it behind. I'm actually shocked by how many positive reviews this company has. If they are normally so good...what happened? Why did he blow me off when he's been so good to so many other people?

There was little acknowledgment that I was even there, which made the experience feel unwelcoming. The most frustrating part was when I was ready to check out. The mush mouth cashier disappeared into the back of the store without saying anything, leaving me standing at the register waiting. After several minutes, I wasn't sure whether anyone was available to help, and I had to look around to find an employee. I understand that staff may have other responsibilities, but a simple "I'll be right back" or some communication would have gone a long way. The lack of customer service and attention made what should have been a quick stop much more inconvenient than it needed to be.

Somewhere between Moab and Monticello, our Dodge Grand Caravan overheated. I thought I was having…read moretransmission problems before I realized the problem was overheating. I managed to pull over and get some water in the radiator, and nurse it into Monticello to the Maverik. Bert just happened to be there in the Maverik. What a blessing. He figured out that we had a leak in the radiator and slowly got enough coolant into to for us to drive it to their shop. It was a Saturday, so he had me drop it off at Shafer's shop where he worked. Everyone we talked to at church the next day and around town said, "You are in good hands with Shafers." I found that to be very true. I met Mr. Shafer on Monday, and he was very kind. Even though he had a lot of other business, he did his best to get a new radiator delivered. When it didn't come due to the transport truck breaking down, he drove to Cortez personally to pick one up. Now that's customer service! It was finished on Wednesday, and we got back on the road and back to McKinney, Texas, with no further incident. The price was very reasonable. I am very thankful for Russell, Bert, Trent, and everyone at the shop. I highly recommend Shafers.
