Somewhere between Moab and Monticello, our Dodge Grand Caravan overheated. I thought I was having transmission problems before I realized the problem was overheating. I managed to pull over and get some water in the radiator, and nurse it into Monticello to the Maverik. Bert just happened to be there in the Maverik. What a blessing. He figured out that we had a leak in the radiator and slowly got enough coolant into to for us to drive it to their shop. It was a Saturday, so he had me drop it off at Shafer's shop where he worked. Everyone we talked to at church the next day and around town said, "You are in good hands with Shafers." I found that to be very true. I met Mr. Shafer on Monday, and he was very kind. Even though he had a lot of other business, he did his best to get a new radiator delivered. When it didn't come due to the transport truck breaking down, he drove to Cortez personally to pick one up. Now that's customer service! It was finished on Wednesday, and we got back on the road and back to McKinney, Texas, with no further incident. The price was very reasonable. The engine in our 2015 Audi melted down south of Monticello (five hours short of Albuquerque) far from our Seattle home, on a trip to Austin TX last spring to see the solar eclipse. I had noticed Schafer Auto Clinic on my way through town, and I asked the tow-truck driver dispatched by AAA to take the car there. In the grip of misfortune, I felt so fortunate to have discovered Schafer. If you're going to be stranded in the middle of what some would consider nowhere, this is the mechanical oasis that you want to find. There are dozens of cars neatly parked on the lot, each with a story as forlorn as mine. Sooner or later Schafer will rescue them all. Come to find out, Audi engines often melt down; replacement motors are in high demand. Therefore it took Trent weeks to find a new one for us. By then we had made it to the eclipse in a rented car, turned in that vehicle and bought a used BMW in Albuquerque. We drove the Bimmer home to Seattle. Trent was calm, friendly and helpful throughout. Once the new engine was installed, my wife and I flew Seattle-Salt Lake City and rode a Greyhound shuttle from the airport to Monticello. Setting out in the repaired car, we had one minor glitch due to a remaining wire that needed connecting, but Schafer mechanics quickly traced and corrected the problem. The bill for the engine and labor was considerable, but surely a fraction of what the job would have cost in Seattle. We ended up getting a whole second road trip, via Zion, Bryce, Antelope Canyon and Crater Lake, back to home. Trent stuck with us throughout our misadventure and subsequent adventure -- good-humored, honest and well organized. He recommended staying at The Atomic Blue Motor Inn, a whimsical, clean retro joint in walking distance of the shop. Trent took time off from repairing cars some years ago to work as Monticello city manager, and says that he had fallen behind on auto technology by the time he returned to the business. So his brother and other mechanics do most of the hands-on work. They fix everything from antique tractors to late-model foreign cars. Parts get shipped in to Moab. My wife and I don't need two cars. So if you'd like an Audi with 2k miles on the engine and 77k on the rest of the car, do let me know! read more

We were pulling our camper trailer from LA and I started having Transmission issues in my GMC Yukon when we pulled into Moab. None of the shops there could work on it or they said it would take a week to get parts, this was the week before Memorial day. I decided to head South hopefully to a bigger town that could work on it but only made it about 60 miles before totally burning the transmission up. When I called Schaefer's Trent said he could overnight a Transmission exchange unit from Salt Lake City the next day. I towed my truck and trailer to him and he ordered the trans the next morning and had it ready the next evening but just needed to check for leaks and what not the next morning. He came to the motel and picked me up helped me connect the trailer, and we were on our way home. These guys know what they are doing and I would recommend them to anyone! THANKS TRENT!! read more

I have to preface this review by saying that I didn't visit Schafer Auto Clinic by choice -- when my 2002 Volvo S40 sputtered to a halt at a stoplight in Monticello, I was feeling more than a bit dejected and more than a bit worried that a mechanic in this small town would take great pleasure in fleecing a Californian with a car that uses many non-standard parts. A very helpful employee of San Juan County called Schafer Auto Clinic on my behalf, and several of Schafer's technicians towed my car to their shop at no charge. From the beginning, the service was tremendously courteous and professional - I was even offered a ride into town to have lunch. A few hours later, I heard my car start -- and what a miraculous thing that was! One of the technicians had devised an ingenious solution that would easily allow me to drive my vehicle home without any worries (he switched two compatible sensors), and I was on my way shortly after paying the extremely reasonable bill for the technician's time. If you're planning to break down in rural Utah, try to do so in Monticello - you're in capable hands. read more

We were passing through Monticello on our way home to Kentucky when my started having issues. It was a Sunday and no one was open, so not wanting to chance getting stranded in the middle of nowhere, we stayed the night in town. Schaefer's got us in first thing in the morning and started working on the car right away. The mechanics were honest and straight forward with us, and I could tell they genuinely cared about our well being. And they certainly did not overcharge for their service! My '06 Cummins went into limp mode between Moab and Monticello. My friend located Schafer Auto and they said they could look at it. (And they meant right away). They even asked me if I needed a ride to the RV park where my rig was located and recommended two good restaurants. After a few hours Trent called to say they had located the problem and would have to order a part. Trent and his crew are the best! They will go out of their way and above and beyond what most ANY other repair shop would do to help you. They are honest and their prices are fair. They made us feel like family while they repaired my vehicle, which took most of the day and a lot of that was waiting for the part to arrive from Moab. They even offered to take us to a local diner until the repair was completed. Their diagnosis of the issue was spot on and we made our 1150 mile trip home without any issue. I had just passed through Monticello on the last leg of a three-day road trip when a warning light lit up on my car's dashboard. Nervous about continuing on to my destination, I decided to call repair shops in Monticello. The first place I called didn't answer the phone. Next was Schafer's. Trent answered immediately and told me to come right down to his shop. I parked and barely had time to get out of my car before he walked up to greet me. He and Bert ran some diagnostics, checked things over, and had me confidently on my way within 45 minutes! And the price was VERY reasonable. The guys were friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, and kind. Over the past few years, I have had the opportunity to spend some time over the summer in Monticello, Utah. Last time I was there, my 2006 Infiniti M35 broke down right in the middle of town!! I asked one of the locals where I could take my car to have it fixed, and they said with out a doubt, go to "Schafer Auto" right down the road. Well all I can say, is those guys at Schafer Auto are honest and straight forward. They diagnosed my car, and fixed it - AT NO CHARGE!! (I guess it wasn't anything major?) Being 1000+ miles from home and hearing of horror stories with mechanics gouging tourists, I was a bit concerned when my car started having problems. I went to the first place I saw in Monticello which was Draper. They charged me $40 for a diagnostics test, told me I needed a tune-up, but they didn't have time. So, they sent me to Schafer's. And I'm glad they did!! Trent and the guys took me right in, looked over the diagnostics that I had brought with me (and were quite surprised that I had been charged for the diagnositcs). They then proceeded to jump right in and find I only needed a sparkplug. Once that was fixed, they also found I had an injector line that had been chewed thru by a rodent. They showed me everything, fixed it, charged what I felt was a reasonable price. All along the way, they were super friendly and helpful. I would go back in a heartbeat. read more

So I traveled with my husband from Chicago to MOAB for Easter Jeep Safari 2017. We trailed some very difficult trails in the canyons of MOAB and put out Montero to its limits. After 5 days of abusing our vehicle we heard a very strange noise coming from the rotor. We took to Schafer Auto Clinic and they told us it was just DIRT and rocks within the caliper/rotor area. These mechanics are honest and trustworthy! They knew we came from Chicago and could have blindsided us with a false diagnosis and robbed us blind. We were over a 1000 miles from home on a roadtrip when our brakes didn't sound right. I was in cortez co and looked on yelp for reviews there and then at monticello our next stop. The reviews were good for schafers, so we decided to drive to monticello. They were extremely helpful and honest. They scanned the abs, which was functioning ok, and ensured the brakes were working up to standard. Everything was good and the culprit causing the noise was the abs. I was not charged a penny! We were in Moab, UT, 1000 miles from home pulling a fifth wheel when our F250 would not start. Roadside assistance towed us to Schafer Auto and Trent and Russell stopped what they were working on and got right on it. Crank shaft sensor had gone out. I'd give these guys a 10 out of 5 if I could. Hundreds of miles from home with hundreds of miles left to get to a wedding, and about 20 miles out of Moab my '02 Maxima started kicking and the check engine light was flashing. We limped her to Schafer where I plugged in my code reader and read a cylinder misfire code. Trent told us they were super busy, but that my particular make and model was dubious for coils going bad. He switched the coils with another cylinder, had me test drive until the code flipped on (for a different cylinder misfire), which confirmed his suspicions about the coil. He had the Napa parts store bring a new one, replaced it and we were off and running. The entire process from the original light turning on to pulling out of Monticello was less than two hours. These guys were absolutely awesome. We had a van packed with stuff and seven kids and had car trouble on the back roads of CO and UT. The guys here took us in, let us sit in their office, and fixed our van quickly. They started with the least expensive repairs too, not attempting to fleece us, as we really had no other choice.
